It's pretty understandable. Chest beam= long range
Swords= short range
Same reason Red Dragon Archfiend is a dragon, but delivered a fire punch whenever he's declared an attack.

This was a fun episode; seeing the filler characters again in some capacity made them feel more important. Not much to mention in regards to the dub other than my usual annoyance that the shouting in the dub is lame and sounds like the voice actors weren't allowed to actually yell.
I know this comment is a little extremely late but I’m a new fan of vanguard. I noticed that as well. It’s like they want to yell but they’re to shy cuz there’s a big crowd around or something. It’s a shame but the voices when not in a yelling scene are quite good.
