This is the season gx got really good for me, I loved the darker tone. People don’t seem to understand that the reason Jaden kinda changed and was enveloped by darkness was his guilt. He always saved his friends but this time he failed. And he failed again. The whole thing is progressively darker mirroring how adulthood enters your life. And season 4 is about acceptance

@@FarelTheGiraffe th-cam.com/video/NlvHaUkAlRg/w-d-xo.html is the video where I react to your Fisheye video. The reason why I keep talking about it is because Fisheye is my favorite character and I feel sorry for many people confusing Fisheye as a female character just because the character loved to wear girls' clothes and go after boys. Jason Barr's voice of Tiger's Eye was cringe because it sounded too masculine and that's what he didn't sound like in the original Japanese version. Trust me, I can do a funnier Tiger's Eye voice than both Jason Barr and John Bentley. Fisheye's voice by Deborah Drakeford was cringe too. Don't get me wrong, not that many people back then expected Fisheye to be a guy, but I liked Fisheye with a male voice. In fact, Fisheye was funnier as a male character and with an effeminate sounding male voice. I get mad seeing Fisheye talk with a tomboyish female voice and Tiger's Eye talk with a very manly voice. Well, the Cloverway dub of Sailor Moon Super S is based on the French dub of that show, but I liked Fisheye as a male character. Sure, the Viz Media dub of Sailor Moon Super S was not available at the time you uploaded your Fisheye video, but I'd prefer the Viz Media dub because it's a masterpiece, a very good English translation of the original Japanese anime, and respects Naoko Takeuchi's original work.

I agree with you on everything for the most part, but i can't really judge every error or plothole since it is a cartoon for children, not meant to have that deep of a story and meant for promotion of cards and to watch episodes you catch on tv.
That being said, the thing i dislike the most is that everything is revolving around a card game. I know that this is Yugioh, but it really isn't that immersive when you are chased by zombies who want to duel you, when you can just push them out of the way. I know that they technically have to duel you to drain your energy, but it just looks goofy.
Also, ending feels rushed and it's really just a setup for season 4, which is stupid cause it was never dubbed.
Spoiler for season 4: Honestly one of the best things in this season was Zanes sacrifice, which was just ruined by him coming back in season 4 somehow, i can't really remember the reason or if there is one.

I was pretty mixed with Season 3, and overall, that's where my interest in GX ended until I had a friend who wanted me to see the 4th season. I was surprised that GX took a darker tone in the 3rd season. A friend of Jaden's get captured, seeing Jaden's friends doubting his actions and ended up dying, then Jaden turning evil and then uniting with Yubel as one, left me feel confused and disappointed.
I really wanna enjoy this season, but it has gotten to the point where the writers didn't know what to do with Jaden nor Duel Academy as a whole. I jumped into GX, expecting to see a show where dueis happened in a school, meeting new students that have goals and seeing our heroes graduate and become the next King of Games, but it sadly made me feel bad since a lot of the characters in GX are very cool and my favorite from a design point, but my biggest disappointment was how they mishandled all of them.
As I mentioned in the last video, they were all side characters who haven't gotten that much screen time. Cyrus did manage to have his moment against Zane and seeing him graduate to Yellow and Blue was fantastic, but unfortunately, those were kinda forgotten because the whole plot of GX was all Jaden and him only instead of his friends nor the Academy.
The end of Season 3 was really bitter to me. I was done with GX, mainly because I finished the Dub and only watched the Dub. My friend wanted me to watch Season 4 so much that I made an exception to check it out as I had always been a Dub watcher in anime. I'll tell you more about when we get to the video, but yeah. I was not expecting anything better in Season 4 after the 3rd one.
Overall, great video! I have seeen comments criticizing your thoughts and opinions on the show, but I am happy to have found someone who shares similar opinions I have about it. okay i gotta speak up, at 8:42... yubel was NOT a retcon. she/they/whatever was foreshadowed in season 1 episode 5, during the "lets draw monsters from a deck and tell scary stories based on the level of the monster" scene. jaden went on about how as a kid he thought he could hear sounds coming from his cards late at night, stopped hearing them, but that now he can hear them again.
there was no reason to have him be able to hear duel spirits, lose the ability, and suddenly regain it with winged kuriboh, other than to foreshadow the yubel plot. without the yubel plot, it would have made more sense for him to have either never had the ability and only got it with winged kuriboh or for him to have always had the ability.
the memories that got wiped by... whatever "medical procedure" can selectively remove memories... were of yubel and the art contest/space capsules. assuming that the "procedure" was really capable of being that specific, it probably left vague memories of hearing duel monster cards, but not which ones or why.
we can argue over how well-executed (or not) the foreshadowing was, but it is obvious that it was there. just... really forgettable.

    • @FarelTheGiraffe
      @FarelTheGiraffe  25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I can't say I'm convinced.
To me that season 1 bit was a hint that Jaden had potential to hear Duel Monster Spirits, only fully realizing it when getting Winged Kuriboh. Yubel was never part of it all, and if you insist that it was, then why did Kazuki Takahashi say that Season 3 and its ideas were a brand new thing to flesh out Jaden, because he was lacking in terms of development? If it was indeed planned from the start, why didn't he confidently say that season 3 was from the beginning planned to shake things up? If you rewatch that part of the show and can picture Yubel being part of that, then that's great, but it doesn't really work for me.
Also, many characters in the show do see duel monster spirits. Are they all reincarnations of important ancient people, with close ones turned into monster-guardians? I can't exactly see Chumley/Hayato as some important character....
To me, Yubel is part of a retcon done much later, and it is not that well executed. However if you have less of a problem with it, then that's perfectly fine. It's okay if we feel differently about it.

@@FarelTheGiraffe the thing that does it for me is that there was no reason for the scene to exist otherwise. gx may be notorious for being full of "what is the point of this" episodes, but rarely in my opinion are the individual scenes within an episode pointless. whether it be for better establishing a character's personality, establishing relationships for a character, comedy, foreshadowing, etc. a scene almost always has a purpose, either within the episode or within the story overall.
the episode would have been completely unchanged if it had simply skipped straight from syrus's scary story to banner's. there was also no need for jaden's story to have been what it was, either. knowing his character at that point, it could have just as easily been something like going to get lunch and all of the food being gone. that would have been "scary" to season 1 jaden, and fitting for the comedic nature of (most) of gx. there was no need to establish that jaden "had the potential to see/hear duel spirits" because we already knew that.
the only point of that story was to establish that jaden could perceive duel spirits *specifically* as a child, and that for some reason he never heard them again until he got winged kuriboh. why? why did we need to know this?
maybe they didn't have yubel specifically in mind, but i am firm that they were trying to foreshadow some sort of spirit plot involving his childhood. maybe this was something scrapped and repurposed into the yubel plot later.
as for other characters being able to perceive spirits... what of it? that has nothing to do with jaden or with yubel's plot. if anything, it only makes the fact that jaden had some weird gap when he seemingly didn't have the ability even weirder. nobody else randomly lost their ability to my knowledge.
the way i see it, he only had one spirit card as a child - yubel. the memories of yubel got suppressed, but not the fact that he heard a card talking to him. he just doesn't remember the specifics. the second spirit card he ever got was winged kuriboh, which he could see and hear just fine. he never actually lost his ability, just the only card he had with a spirit in it.
why would his cards just randomly stop talking to him, or why would he randomly stop hearing them? simple - none of that was the case. the only card he had that *could* talk to him was simply no longer in his possession. whether that card was actually planned to be yubel, or was something else that got scrapped, i don't know. but there is no way that scene wasn't meant to foreshadow something bigger than "jaden can see duel spirits" because that was already established.

@@nonormies now... while I stand by my opinion, I will agree that the scene of Jaden's childhood always stood out to me as well. I also have no concrete answer to why it was there. I feel like this might be a thing where I'll always view it as the writers not knowing what they were doing, but if you feel like it was a sign of their intentions for the future, then that's an opinion that you have every right to 🙂

@@FarelTheGiraffe gx is a weird series, and while it does have its fair share of writing issues, i feel like most of those issues are from not getting to fully explore locations and concepts as thoroughly as we would have wished. i know you went on about the lack of spirit world exploration, and i agree. but i suspect that is due to external constraints, not a result of the skill of the writers themselves.
in fact, s01e05 is one where i feel the writers were bringing their a-game. the cold open with syrus walking around in a dark cave, raising curiosity, and setting a spooky tone right out of the gate. only to find it is just a scary story, a brief false sense of security. the scary storytelling gives banner a narratively convenient reason to tell the slifer boys about the abandoned dorm. back to spooky, also why is banner talking about this? foreshadowing to his role later. episode goes on further to start establishing atticus and the beginnings of shadow magic within gx. just all around, it was very well structured and devised to set up future plot points.
i personally give the gx writers enough credit to not waste scenes in general, but with all of the other long-term-plot-relevant things going on in that episode, in my mind there is no way that wasn't intentional with the childhood jaden scene.
it's okay if you can't bring yourself to give them that kind of credit from how sloppily done some elements of the series are, but i personally believe that happens solely when they aren't given enough time/budget to delve into things deeper - not that they would make a pointless scene about the main character's childhood on a whim with apparently no narrative significance for the episode or the overall plot.

Aside from feeling forced and taking drastic change in tone, one thing that I hated about this season was how it handled Jaden's character. And honestly, I'm a little disappointed to find out that this was something the Takahashi came up with.
Jaden Yuki strikes me as a someone similar to Goku from the Dragon Ball franchise. A kind and compassionate person who acts immature, and sometimes infuriating, but is surprisingly wise and a good judge of character. The kind of protagonist who invokes personal growth for others rather than going through it himself. In fact, that was a running theme for him in the first two seasons. He would come across someone who had these questionable ideas and say something insightful that would change them, and possibly their lives, for the better.
But then, we got Season 3. During this time Jaden was accused of being a selfish and irresponsible person who saw dueling as just a game. However, these were all things that he proved otherwise in the previous seasons. He always expressed how much he cared for his friends. He would go to great lengths in order to help them. And he went through many duels that he recognized as being serious, especially if his friends were involved.
I know an important part of this season was about growing up and accepting maturity, but I don't think it would be necessary for someone like Jaden. Actually, it would've been a good twist if it was revealed that he wasn't as childish as he appears to be. Just because someone acts happy in the face of something serious, that doesn't mean they're foolish or irresponsible. Sometimes they act that way because they're aware of how dark the world can be, but choose to face it with a smile, knowing that it wouldn't help to wallow in your own misery, especially if it's something they have experience with.
In fact, if Takahashi wanted Jaden to show some growth as a character, it could've been done through a flashback. Basically, a backstory for Jaden, showing how he was alone and miserable because of Yubel's possessive behavior, but stayed with her out of his innocent understanding of friendship. But then, he comes across someone/something that inspires him to be his own person, let go of Yubel, and become the happy young man we know and love. Not only would this give Jaden some growth that appeared prior to the series, explaining why he is the way he is, but it would also include a lesson about how important it is to move on and cut out those who hurt you, especially if they never feel any remorse for their actions. And let's face it. Yubel was already a messed up character who, depending on your interpretation, could fit some rather dark tropes. The kind that I fear might get me, or this comment, reported for putting them down.
My point is that while Season 3 had a few good things about it, Jaden's development was one of them. He's a great protagonist and didn't deserve to go through all that.
Please feel free to comment and tell me what you think.

I sort of had something similar in mind. Indicating that the bland happy attitude is not just "him", but rather something he developed after some trauma. It would actually put light on the fact that despite how child he seems, this "play for fun" attitude is mature in a few aspects. It feels like that's what's there in plain sight, but they never go for it. They mishandle that whole part of the plot.
