  • WELCOME WELCOME!
    I always paint with airless sprayers ( Minimum 10 years) & id say they are at least 4 times faster than the conventional roller and brush, and a FAR FAR superior finish too!
    This video is me trying to persuade you to give it a go, go for it, buy one! you will NEVER go back, trust me.
    I spray Mdf ALL THE TIME with these sprayers and they give a GREAT finish, and honestly dont know why more people are not using them.
    There is one thing is this setup that makes it all possible... the Green fine finish tips!
    Watch the whole video, hopefully you will be inspired and take some useful tips away with you.
    Thanks for watching
    Ryan

    Wish this was uploaded yesterday, just sprayed a tv unit and wordrobe doors with a Johnstone primer and the durable acrylic. You normally use the primer coz it’s cheaper. But now thinking about the time spent washing the machine though for each paint. It’s worth just spending the little extra on using just the top coat. Great video again mate!

      @thelondoncraftsmanworkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha that is a shame, but you should still would of got good results.
      I'm always experimenting of finishes, and this 2x top coats really does work, and with no down sides compared to primer first coat.
      The first coat dries so tough so I love doing 2 top coats now

    You should turn your Sprayer into an air assisted airless Sprayer, all you need is a compressor I would get the gentlin silent compressor, get the aaa gun again iwould go durr gun you can dial those guns in great for the size of fan and 5he shape of the fan , and the the aaa lines and you've got the perfect spraying system for your workshop. It's nearly as fast as an conventional airless and it's just as good as a hvlp honesty the finish is flawless , once you get that set you'll think why did I use an airless all this time

    Not sure what your issue is with HVLP really, are you using a hvlp gun with an air compressor or a proper turbine? HVLP connected to a professional 5-6 fan turbine beats airless day and night. The whole point of HVLP is that you have around 85% efficiency with regards to overspray, even using PU paints.. Graco airless is ok for some processes but to say it’s better than a properly setup HVLP turbine for cabinetry spraying is a stretch. Also why do you claim HVLP is so slow? My setup with a 1.5mm nozzle spraying clear coat, PU or AC is as fast if not faster than airless. Do you ever use catalyst paints or always off the shelf tins? This could be part of the issue. The problem with the paints you use is the hardening time’s (not drying) whereas a proper 2 part Pu with an anti yellow and anti scratch catalyst will give you a 100% better finish that’s way tougher and all you need is a tinted primer and 2 top coats.

      No need to thin the paint. No need to fill the cup. Stick the hose in a 5 gallon pail and keep spraying until it's done. Also the gun is lighter. Try to paint the ceiling with HVLP.

      I use a Graco finish 9.5 with pressure pot. I am using either waterborne ML Campbell or General finishes Hi build poly in color or 2K poly for finish, With our new finish to be coming from Centurion coatings. I am sanding in 30mins from coating. These are water based cabinet grade finishes. Sayerlak has the same type in water over there. Two coat finishes are rock hard. I believer the reason for primer is not just a bonding issue over time, but for sealing of the materials you are coating- I believe the materials being sprayed onto (i.e. MDF) do not pull the water out of the coating and let it evaporate properly into the air.
      These are assumptions, since I am not a chemist.

    To be fair you can just paint mdf, it’s other types of wood you really need a primer. Or using oil based top coats, your working with an all round paint and no knots or anything so it's fine, you've sealed the edges. As long as you know when were or why u need a primer, it's fine. t's just working smarter not harder.

    I don't think many people talk about downsides of hvlp such as the low pressure meaning you have to thin water based paints
    I found I was thinning tikkurila beyond 50 percent to atomize correctly

  • @AlexKunstar

    Finally someone else who finds primers useless!! I've been using high end trim paint for a long time now on cabinets, trim, and doors, and trim conversions from bare wood. I always prefer to put several nice thick layers of topcoat on instead of relying on a primer to prep the surface. Never had an issue, primers don't have magical ingredients, if you're already using high quality paint that can go directly on bare wood and metal, why add a useless step.

    • @thelondoncraftsmanworkshop
      @thelondoncraftsmanworkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    HVLP is widely used in the furniture industry, the set up your using is for decorators spraying volume, hvlp is fast if you have the right set up and compressor.. water based paints are still not hard wearing enough. ac lacquer is what we use on all the furniture we spray, we have tested over the past five years all the main paint manufacturers water based products, and there are still issues, it will be water based in the future, it has to be !! environment!!!

    As a painter and decorator I would normally admonish you for not using a primer because the primer bonds with surface, but you've got my noggin joggin, being its airless and it fires the paint out like little needles it probably penetrates the surface giving the bond that you would not normally get. You probably should have pointed out though for inexperienced users of airless NOT to test spray across their hand because it can have fatal consequences. Great video though, will have to give it a try myself......

    • @thelondoncraftsmanworkshop
      @thelondoncraftsmanworkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I agree. Pocketholes are a cool way of getting you out of trouble on certain jobs.
      I think if you paint quite frequently and have many components then its definitely worth designating some space to your sprayer.
      If I had to give up my spray space and start hollering and brushing again I'd give up doing what I'm doing.
      I have a dulux centre near me (watford) and they sell Sprayers. They also have a demo sprayer to give one a go, maybe worth trying one?

I have issues where when I flip the doors to do the other side, I'll get marks from the arms holding the door on my finished side. Even after waiting 24hrs. I don't really have the time to wait longer (as in sure you can appreciate), what's your experience with paint getting hard enough to "stack" the doors and how many coats do you do in a day and then how long do you wait to flip and do the other side?

    I've tried all them paints using airless and they are not very durable at all. I discovered Sayerlack and it's much better. Spraying cabinets with airless is not the best as it's very easy to hit it to heavy with the paint coming out so fast. And not having the option of using a 2 part paint for even better durability is a bummer. Overspray is pretty high to.

      What paint are you using, what you spraying? What pressure? What tip are you using

      @@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop 310 tip, same as you, with Johnstone’s Acrylic Eggshell, same as you, and a Graco GX21 at 1200psi. And doing two top coats of the paint, same as you. Apart from the smaller machine I’ve been copying everything you’ve been doing in your videos to get the same finish as you, except I’m getting massive paint runs. I’m wondering if it’s because I’m thinning the paint by 10%.

      @@MartyKemp in that case, the only thing it can be is diluting the paint.
      When I clean out my machines, and flush through with water to get remaining paint out, some of the water goes back into the paint tin.
      When it does this I notice the paint is quite watery and I personally wouldn't spray at that consistency.
      I'd go back to not thinning the paint, start at 1200 like you are and a quick burst spray on some scrap to make sure it's a nice part with no tails either side of the spray pattern.
      If there are tails still, Up the pressure bit by bit.
      I belive you want to be using the black filter in gun and machine for eggshell at around 1200 1400 psi. If you get a good pattern without changing its not critical to change but keep eye on filters every now and then.
      You'll get the hang of it, and when you do it's plane sailing and a pleasure to use and very quick!

    Good video, is the GX 21 better than the gxff?

    • @thelondoncraftsmanworkshop

      I'd say they have different uses, the ff is for people spraying less & and sticking to spraying small amounts of paint for trims/architraves, skirts etc.
      Apparently it has a smaller hose diameter too so it takes up less paint.
      This way you can buy a litre tin of something and put it in the hopper.
      I personally would still use the gx21, I've very rarely needed to spray that little and usually my minimal spray amount is around 2.5L

      @@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop that's great thanks for the quick reply, I would love to get into spraying and saw when the gx21 came out but I would use it once every 6 months and apprehensive about it drying up and becoming unusable if stored for so long

      Your welcome!
      Leaving your sprayer unused for long periods is absolutely fine.
      Just make sure you store it with pump guard in and it should be fine.
      The good thing about these gx21 Sprayers is that you can change over the pumps in a matter of seconds all by your self and for relatively low cost( around £100).
      Not saying you will have to as you should get years of use from your sprayer, but it's good to know it's a quick cheap fix if it ever went wrong.

      Hi mate, I have and it sprays exactly the same, just different sheen level but the finish you get comes out the same as eggshell

      I only ever used 2k poly until i had to use w/b for a job. Ok you cant do gloss but i try to avoid them jobs.
      Or talk them out of it!
      Now i would never use a/c again and try to stick to S Williams stuff. You ought to try a sample. You may get converted.
