Ren dell why did u then-is what i ask them, lol always interesting stories! Proud "Honda Hoarder" of 3 CRXs (90 base-91 base & HF) & a 1991 Civic DX hatch..
I owned an 89 Civic hatch, a 90 crx, and an 02 insight all at the same time. The insight eventually died and I had to sell my others when I moved because I couldn't take them with me. And you are right: worst mistake of my life. I miss those cars like crazy.
out of all my cars, my 88 CRX Si received the most compliments. Every other time I went to the gas station someone would say something like that. I bought mine for 1000 bucks in 2013 and sold it by 2015.
For sure. I have one with the D16A9 engine French one . Full stock 1989 crx still 146HP on the dyno , mean something like 125HP . Just loose 6HP in 245 000km.
In 1987 I purchased my first car, a 1985 CRX HF. I was hooked and a Honda fanboy I became. In 1989 I purchased a brand new CRX Si. To this day it is still one of my favorite cars only second to my 2002 S2000. There is a lot of hype around the CRX but honestly, it was something special. In high school I remember friend's dads reliving their youth by buying 60s and 70s muscle cars. I can see us 40 somethings doing the same with CRX's.
J Fazzuoli Your Honda car history sounds a little like mine. In 1990 I bought an "86 CRX Si which I drove to 187K miles. I traded it in for a "91 CRX Si which I had for 16 years and 321K trouble free miles. I sold it 8 years ago and have always regretted it! Last month (Jan. 2018) I bought an "06 S2000 with 36K miles. i hope to put 400K on it haha
travelnguy2002 i have 2 1991 CRX's-the base & the HF, now just need an Si to complete the trifecta! I've owned a 2003 S2000, to me CRX's are way more fun-even w/o swaps!!
My first car was a 1985 CRX, bought used in 1988. Gave it away in 2010 with 354,000 miles on it. Motor in good shape, but body had rusted away. Bought a 1991 CRX Si on eBay in 2008, love it, will keep it forever.
the CRX were fun cars. Agile and quick given the time period they were produced in, plus the tires were small enough to break the car loose. Honda caught lightning in a bottle.
I daily drive a 1986 Honda CRX DX model which is in between the fuel efficient HF and the sportier Si. It has a carburetor and NO computer at all. It is the Canadian version with no emission controls and even a manual choke. One of the last cars Honda ever made with out an ECU. Runs like a Swiss watch to this day.
I owned a USDM 1990 CRX Si for 27 years. My mother-in-law purchased a USDM Del Sol Si new when they first came out so I had many opportunities to drive her car and mine back to back while both were in healthy stock form. The Del Sol was a comfortable, smooth car and even had a higher redline but it lacked the sporty edge that the CRX had. Everything about the CRX was more direct and immediate with a lighter, more "awake" feel to it. The CRX shifter had longer throws, but required less effort through the gates. The CRX engine also had more low end torque. After driving the Del Sol, I was always happy to return to my CRX!
The CRZ could have been a good successor, it doesn't weight much & has the same overall style. If Honda made it with better suspension, and in an "SI" trim with the K series trim i'm sure it wouldn't have been discontinued.
I'm in the UK and on my third crx. It is an '88 model before the abs and side strengthening bars were added keeping it light. People love them. When parking or getting fuel, people come over and comment on this great classic. One thing is for sure, it will never be for sale.
Back in 1984, when I put $500 down and had to wait 90 days, for my 1.3L CRX, the speed limit was 55 MPH. I lived in Florida where it is mostly flat. When I drove 55 MPH, on I-4, I would get 50 MPG. when I would drive 50 mph my MPG would jump to 59. I ran 87 octane gas, but every 3 months I filled up with Texaco's 93 oct. The dealer said that the USA was limited on the number of imports, each month. I was told 50, but I never believed that it was that low. My out the door price was $8,100 That 1st year of the USDM CRX they did not call the economy engine an HF, they called it the 1.3
Despite larger & heavier, the 2nd Gen CRX HF could best that mpg. The sequential FI certainly helped. My '89 HF despite running larger 185/60/14 tires(stock Si size basically) still gets about 48 mpg going 75 mph on the interstate(!) Love my CRX! It's the rarer "superior blue" & bought it from the original owner back in '06...👍
Well done! I had a 1st gen CRX in high school and I loved that thing. The Del Sol should have been its own thing because it is definitely not a CRX. Actually I believe the true successor to the original CRX right not is not even from Honda. I think the Hyundai Veloster N is the true successor to the CRX. It is what the CRZ should have been. Thanks for the video.
If Honda just got off its high horse and actually listened to the people, they would have never made an Un-sellable NSX, would have a 2nd gen S2000 on the road doing burn outs, a 6th gen prelude, and an awesome little CRX!..Instead, we got nothing but crap for a long time with no promise and direction to boot. Just listen to the people Honda! We want classic Honda back! Screaming Vtec, lightweight hatches, cool tech features without being over the top, affordable supercars that make the rest of the world drool.... Please,... Please.. Bring it back. Since I'm not holding my breath, thank God I can still go buy an old, well taken care of 90s and 2000s model Honda.
That swap is so easy to do I could do it blindfolded now lol. I did the swap myself when I was 17 in 2003 lol. The prices of the swap have gone down considerably since then. I think if I was to get back into the Honda scene I would go with a K swapped crx but that damn k series is pita vs the old b,d and h series engines.
I bought a brand new base model 1988 CRX-HF for $9,172 off the dealer's lot. It had only air conditioning. I added a alpine stereo. Buying this car is one of the greatest memories I had of my life. I remember my younger brother and I shopping around and then taking me to buy it. I had it for 8 years, then bought a used one and drove it for another 2 years. I regret giving up both of them. Every single mile, ever single shift of the gears was an enormous pleasure. I drove it everywhere. I put 20k miles on it every year. Its short wheel base and independent double wishbone suspension gave it an agility and nimble handling that no car I've driven has ever had. Thanks to the gearing, it's acceleration was decent even though it only had 71 horsepower. The limitation was it's highest speed on the highway was only 94 mph, which was a limitation I think most people could easily live with. I think many of my friends look at it as a tiny cheap car and couldn't understand why someone my size (6' 2") would drive it. I thought it was a better more modern designed version of a Porsche 9-11 - with only slight compromise in engine power in order to provide lighter, more nimble, and better handling. I've never driven a car that handled better than that - not even close - it was like driving a go-kart but with a great suspension system. I also loved the stacked boxes, minimalist instrament panel with it's center consul shifted toward the direction of the driver. I didn't need a cup holder because a cup, bottle or other drink could easily fit snug and pinned in between the seat and the parking break. The only thing that generation didn't have was electronic stability control - as a front wheel drive vehicle it drove well in the snow but could still have problems with control from slipping. I'm not sure that they should have stopped making that car and would love to be able to buy something identical but with safety feature updates. I now drive a 2017 Jetta - it reminds me a lot of my old CRX in that it's a very cheap car that delivers really great stuff. I'm older and if I only have 1 car I need something roomier, like a sedan that can accomodate passengers now and then. It has a 1.4 liter turbo that goes from 0-60 in under 8 seconds - the traditional definition of a fast car and great manual shifting (though not nearly as sweet as my old CRX), has 4 wheel independent suspension, gets 40mpg on the highway, provides 38+ inches of legroom for back seat passengers (thus bigger than most midsized and even SUVs and has a huge trunk too) - in short it's bigger on the inside than midsized, gets better gas mileage than most sub-compacts, and as much acceleration as most V-6s, and it cost me only about $16k and came with a life-time powertrain warranty - though I haven't had any problems with it. Having said that, I still miss my old 1988 CRX and wish some how I could have hung on to it and just kept it in shape. The current Jetta has the same engine, better interior (although slightly less roomy back seat and trunk) six speed but I don't think its as good looking - still its a great vehicle for the money and I think the best value in its class, all things considered (the New Mazda3 is of course of great car, but it's less roomy and has less performance characteristics, but very beautiful). One can and will pay more for a car or and SUV but they have to pay MUCH more to get substantially more car for the money.
I had a 1985 CRX Si ( black) and a 1988 CRX Si ( red) and loved them both. Sure wish Honda would find a way to bring one back with either the existing Honda 1.5 turbo or 2.0 turbo.
The Del Sol was supposed to be the successor but with a more sportier performance/look. The CRZ probably wasn't as I presume it succeeded the Insight. Honda paved the way with the CRZ for its way into the hybrid market. Since that's no longer the case the CRZ was discontinued. I say the Del Sol was to precede the S2K. Also it should be a later version of the CRX as it looks like it it had evolved from the CRX. The CRX is not a 2 seat convertible though. Which may explain why some people will say it's not a CRX in the US market.
I had a 89 CRX back in 1999 and the cam broke and tore up the head, back then i didn't have the resources on Hondas i have now to fix it so i sold it and regreted it, i recently bought a bone stock 88 CRX HF off my neighbor running for dirt cheap, no cel, 5 speed .. I'm keeping this one. Imo its the best Honda classic you can own, it never gets old and everybody still loves them
In 1988 I bought a new 1988 CRX Si. In 2012, I bought a manual trans CR-Z. Was it similar, yes. Was it the same? No, but I enjoyed it all the same. It was slower, more comfortable, more refined, but still fun to drive. I have a 2018 Civic Si Coupe now.
I loved my little cr-x (last model pre del sol). We couldn't go with the del sol as we had puppies and needed that hatch, so we went 'integra'. Not a bad choice and I loved my type-R. Ahhh, the good ol' days! Great video - Thanks!
89 with a D16A6, Skunk springs, Tokico shocks, braided brake lines, K&N filter, DC Strut bars. Fun as could be to drive. 40mpg hwy. My thoughts? A CRX is all there is. If it isn't a CRX, it just isn't a CRX.
Awesome as always, Gary. I have a '94 Del Sol VTEC, and while I love it's high revving engine, removable top, and handling characteristics, I just don't feel that it's spiritually in line with the previous CRXs. That's not necessarily bad! It just forged it's own path. Japanese cars are clearly your passion, and you present them so well. I'd like to see your take on some American cars as well, especially on your old Camaro you mentioned as I'm also a sucker for 4th gens.
So much to unpack here. The 1985 CRX Si was the first car I bought, as a graduating HS senior, $9800 out the door new. I had it for 7 years as a weekend commuter from college thru grad school. Averaged about 36 mpg. Folks conflate the Si and HF together, but the HF 50 mpg came at the cost of performance and structural rigidity. Gas of that era was 10% more efficient as it wasn’t diluted with ethanol. The CRX was not designed for the American climate, as the AC was added at the port, and it was quite weak. It had a novel (for an economy car) push button controlled HVAC system instead of the usual cable/lever system. The Si sunroof that opened outside of the roof was truly unique, and along with the Accord of the same year, the Si marked the first fuel injected motor for Honda. Interior storage was amazing as well as Honda reliability. I briefly looked at the Honda Del Sol when the VTEC arrived in the mid nineties but the dealer was wanting in the mid-twenties for it. Allow that to sink in... 2.5x compared to the original CRX Si. By the way, “del Sol” really stood for “delete soul”... it had little character. Fast forward to 2011 thru today: I’ve owned each of the three CRZ variants. Price on each was roughly $20k which I find amazing compared to the del sol of two decades ago. And the EX model is well appointed. Tank ave mpg has been about 40, with a hero tank of 49 mpg. I think after the Civic Hybrid battery fiasco, Honda rated the hwy mpg too conservatively on the CRZ. The CRZ is a faithful successor of the CRX. It even has three driving modes that remind me of HF/DX/Si. If you want more performance there’s factory and aftermarket superchargers available. For the way I drive it 99% of the time, I don’t need extra power. The CRZ is available as a six speed hybrid, and in 3-4th gears it’s a very torquey motor to redline. Unfortunately it’s just not a lot of hp these days. But the torque of the electric motor is nice when you’re running ac in the city from a tiny inline 4. The CRZ is a better balanced momentum car compared to the original, but the CRX punched higher than its class as the overall performance of comparable vehicles in the late eighties wasn’t anywhere near today.
Oh and forgot to add the hidden reason why the CRZ didn’t sell well: the test drive. Honda salespeople are trained to bring out a car, crank it up, allow the ac to cool it off, then bring the prospective buyer in the car, go over controls and features: all while the engine is running. Unfortunately after all of that time without any regen braking, the CRZ charge for the hybrid motor was completely depleted. Customer takes the CRZ out for a test drive: no power at all because the hybrid assist is disabled from battery depletion and now scavenging extra power from the gas motor.
Thanks for this video, learned a few more things about about my car. My CRX is by far the funniest car I've ever drove, still turns heads no matter where I go!!
Great video with excellent content. 1 thing though, it was the "Vtec" model of the Del Sol that introduced the B16A3 engine, not the Si as mentioned in the video. I feel that was a poor trim naming convention by Honda and they should have went with "SiR" or something like that.
Almost sold my 89 si recently but decided not too because I knew I would regret it. Mechanically solid. Has a few wiring issues with seatbelts and doors sensors and motor where when i try and start it, atleast once a month, it clicks once and no start or crank so i just need to disconnect and reconnect the battery but starts every time and only has 130,000 miles ok my d16a6. Needs new suspension all around and a fair share of body work and new sunroof but solid beater. Worth fixing her up so keeping her as shes been my daily for 3 years now and still pulling strong❤️
Love my 90 Si so much. Only problem is finding a shop who is creative enough to keep it running smooth and fine because parts are becoming harder and harder to find. Such a good car and from what I was told long ago when I bought it, it was one of the last cars Soichiro Honda had a hand in creating.
Very first time ever seeing a CRX was a new 1984 & I saw these 2 girls getting in one at Mcdondalds & I remember thinking wth is that, looks like a toy car. 15 years later I owned one & developed quite an appreciation for them. The Comfort, great ride, smooth, & yes quik for passing was a breeze. I could pass confidently in thatcar better than my old heavier Mustangs
I've always wanted a CRX, Escort GT, 944 Turbo and Del Sol. I've liked the delsol personally for the style and the CRX has always been the goto car for the guys from the ghetto that wanted to get into cars cheaply, so everyone talked of CRX's and preludes in my circle. My dad onwed a Escort GT with Cosworth mods thats was basically a street rally car. He worked two jobs one at night and one during the day and was sleep anytime he was home. I learned to drive sneaking his car out. I just got a 944 yesterday and thats one childhood dream off my wishlist. It needs a drivers side window and fresh paint. interior is mint and im gonna do some minor upgrades. I only spent $200! Its not a junk car eiter I got it from my boss. My goal is to retromod it into a modern daily.
When I look back, my second gen crx was one of funnest cars i own. And I owned cars like Corrado VR6, r33 gtr and now owning a r35 gtr. I would buy it again in a hart beat.
I had a 1985 CRX Si and a 1988 CRX Si and loved them both . Honda has the engine for it today to do a 2019 remake ( with a 1.5 turbo or possibly the 2.0 turbo from the Accord ) to throw into a 2018 Civic derived shortened 2 seater chassis. I would buy this in a heart beat. C'mon Honda ,you know you want to ......
Small Correction | Del Sol's came in three trims (S, Si, & VTEC). You said the B16A3 motor went into the Si - it actually was only in the VTEC models. S (D15) & Si (D16) models were quite slow due to it's extra weight. Earning the Del Sol the depressing moniker "Del-Slow". Del Sol VTEC's are quite a bit more rare, and are certainly quick cars (Not Fast!) but definitely quick. My Del Sol VTEC ran the quarter with a best time of 14.9 on street tires. Mods were full bolt on's & GSR Cams (at sea level). Slap a body kit on one of them, if you can deal with the impracticality, and it's a stylish fun ride with that targa top! I've owned 3 CRX's, and they are hard to match for authentic driving heritage, and pure driving fun. Transplant a B-series or K-series, get boosted, and make sure you have a traction bar to translate HP to Velocity. They are getting very rare to buy these days while still flaunting a timeless design. Honda would be wise to release a CRZ type or whatever - with no hybrid nonsense! Slap that 2018 Civic type R (FK8) motor in there and try to keep up with the demand ya idiots!
Great video! CRX is my favorite car....I’ve heard that Del Sol was the successor to CRX due to CRX very poor crash tests/inevitable death if rolled over. Basically Del Sol was made safer (& heavier) to please insurance companies.
I wouldn't be too sure about the Del Sol inspiring the S2K. As a matter of fact, Honda had been building RWD cars long before the S2K and NSX. The 2000 actually gets its roots from Honda's 'S' series of high-revving roadsters that they built in the '60s (aka the S360, S500, the S600 w/ a 9,500 RPM rev limit, and the insane 10,000 RPM S800).
I bought a white 1991 CRX Si new in 1991. It had a MSRP of $9,999 and the radio and AC were the only real options. I paid a little over $8,000 for the car plus installed a radio. Owned the car for three year and put 40K on it. I sold the car in like new condition for $9,000 as they were no longer available new and were still in very big demand in the market place. The car was basically free to own for me less gas and insurance.
In 2012, I purchased a 91 CRX HF with a B18A1 swapped into it. I was a 16 year old high school kid but i instantly got hooked. The car unfortunately got wrecked and I purchased a 96 Miata....which got wrecked when I got pulled out in front of, then I owned an 06 Mazdaspeed 6 (terrible piece of shit). I sold the MS6 and purchased a 90 CRX Si with its unmodified D16. Through all the wrecks and cars, I always held a special place in my heart for the CRX and always will.
The 91 CRX Si was the first car I owned as what I learned to drive stick on. Bought a beater for $1000 and maintained it for a few years putting another $1000 into it until it died. Then it got totaled sitting on the street and my insurance payed out $2000 which I used with my savings and a small car loan to get my 350z which I still drive today. I still browse CRX's though to see If I can get another one.
I HAD both the first and second generation CRX's. I never thought the Del Sol was a continuation of CRX. I always considered the Del Sol to be a funky civic. I still have some gen2 CRX parts in a box somewhere, LOL.
I think the Cr-Z resembles the 1st gen crx more than most people are aware of. It takes the styling cues of the rear hatch window from the 2nd gen crx, but the body and suspension take some cues from the first gen crx. I think this is often overlooked, at least by most people in the U.S.A. where I live, because the initial thought that comes to mind for most is the 2nd gen crx. Considering your point that doubts were held from the initial design to bring the crx to the U.S. as well as the popularity of the 2nd gen crx in the U.S. Market, it is no surprise that the Cr-Z was perceived the way that it was.
Nice vid, but I'll point out two things. 1. CRX is an acronym for Civic Renaissance X (Roman numeral ten). The Civic was first launched in 1973 and was basically the arrival of Honda in the US and elsewhere as a true vehicle mass producer. To mark the ten year anniversary, the CRX was developed for 1983 release, ten years after the first Civic. Honda was at this point in history, quite sentimental. They pulled a similar "trick" for the S2000, but it was to honor the S600/800 for the 2000 model year. 2. The TRUE successor for the Mk2 CRX already existed, and it's not the CRZ. It was the original Insight, circa 2000. Virtually the same size and wheelbase, lightweight aluminium and a very similar body style and layout. Yes it was a hybrid, but so is the CRZ but the first Insight is hundreds of kg lighter than the CRZ. It also held (still holds?) the record for most fuel efficient car with an internal combustion engine.
Are you for real ? Did you even watch the video ? The last engine they put in this model was a VTEC motor !! You obviously don’t know much about VTEC they did that in about 1992 with the second generation at 112KW which is a huge amount of power for a small car
I watched this video in hopes of you connecting the CRX and CRZ, and you did, that's awesome. I'm not a Honda fan, but I think the CRZ is the best looking Honda there is, such a perfectly proportioned car. It's just too bad it was marketed as a "fuel efficient" Hybrid, even though it got worse mileage than it's predecessor... I'd love a CRZ with a 90s B-series VTech engine, coupled with the electric motor, that'd be a grand combination!
2:25 That is My Baby. My First Honda ever, and I still have the original advertisement for that 1985 CRX Si. It Reads "The Most Powerful Civic Ever!" It made 91hp.
The American 2nd gen crx came with 3 engines he forgot to mention, the HF model got a 63 hp 8 valve 1.5 , the standard or dx model got the dual port 16 valve 1.5 at 92 hp and the Si got the d16a6 1.6 16 valve at about 106hp. And he forgot to mention that the del Sol had the 127hp d16z6 single cam vtec motor offered in the SI version with the b16 at 158 hp coming in the delsol si vtec version and the 104 hp d15b7 for the baseline
Gary I really enjoy your videos you put out such great car content and GTR content as well since you own one. Keep up the good work I love the videos you post helps me learn a lot man.
I drive a 87 crx. Extremely fun car ... in case you didnt know, honda is bringing back the crz with turbo option and they're getting rid of the hybrid (I think it will have an si or type R option as well)
I had an '88 CRX Si. It was my second Honda, and the first car I ever bought new, and I loved it to death. I think after 88, they moved the seatbelt anchor from the B pillar to the door frame, which seemed odd to me. The Del Sol was certainly not a CRX, because it had none of the practicality. And yeah--the back was NOT a rear seat, but I still had people who would ride back there. If Honda brought back a real successor, with type R performance, I'd buy it without thinking. Here was mine: plover.net/~agarvin/honda2.jpg
Another great video Gary. I owned a CRX many years ago. I used it in DB drag racing. I went to the world finals with it. I regret it now though cause the decibels from the subs tore it apart. Literally. Thanks again for another great video. Just curious but I am half Thai and was curious about your nationality? Can’t wait for another video. Thanks Gary!
I've been told that I can pass for Korean, Chinese, Tibetan 😂. I'm Hmong. It sounds like you had a great racing background. Would like to see videos if you have any.
I have a1990 crx ee8 v tec. It has 94k genuine miles with all service history to back it up. It has Integra type r cams. Integra alloys. Tein adjustable suspension. Scorpion exhaust which isn't over loud and sounds obscene in v tec. It's got b16a1 engine and is good for 145 mph, I keep running out of road and it's a bit crazy at that speed but it may have a touch more in it, not sure though. Car is absolutely relentless, and just keeps pulling. I had a y49 Barbados yellow crx si before which was a fun car but the crx v tec is a whole different thing. The closest thing to a road legal go kart. Puts a smile on my face every time, lol
I have a 1989 CRX and I love that car I don't mind it being a 2 seater in the US. I honestly think the 2 seats suits that car better. Plus I like the covers in the back it's a good place to hide my sub. But I still wish we got the bigger engine though.
1988 si is 1800lbs and the lightest chassis out there, for being a si i think it's the same weight as a hf. not much safety equipment back then. but ratio to horses, it pulls well with a b20 vtec turbo.
I just picked up a 85 crx si. Can't wait to get it back on the road. The crz was such a waste. It really could of been something. Honda dropped the ball on it. We had 3 year old cars still new on the lot at my dealer. So sad.
My second-gen Si was the best car I ever owned. Certainly the most fun to drive back when it and I were in our primes. Like me it eventually deteriorated beyond usefulness. A hale storm which left the body massively pitted (metal parts) or cracked (plastic?) and shattered front windshield and hatchback window didn't help things. Insurance wrote it off as totaled. Spent the fixed amount of money they gave me to replace the worst of the damage and left the rest of its exterior in its battle-scarred condition. Wasn't worth sinking much of money in past that point. Let it slowly go to seed and in the end sold it for practically nothing.
I like the CR-Z. I wish it was still around. I think it was a spiritual successor, but a weak one. The best modern spiritual successor to a Japanese model is the 86/BRZ.

Back in the 90s I had an ee8 crx ( I'm in Europe ) and another one in 2001 ( ee8 with a b18c6 this time ). Prices are going crazy lately here...
I think the 1988-1991 (ED9) CRX and 1988-1995 Civics (EF,EG) are the best. Also correction on the Del Sol. The D16Y was still used in the Del Sol Si after 1994; The B16A model was simply called the Del Sol VTEC. However, as you know, the D16Y had SOHC VTEC, but didn't say VTEC on the valve cover: The B16A is DOHC with VTEC on the valve cover. It was the first model in the US to use the B16 engine. the Del Sol was discontinued in 1997- Meaning it took two years before the Honda introduced the B16A in the 1999 USDM Civic Si.
I own a crx and every time someone looks at my car they say "man I wish I never sold my crx it was the best car I had" long live the crx!
Omg, this times 100. I NEVER want to be that guy that said “...I wish I never sold my CRX!!!!” It happens WAY TOO OFTEN!!
I sold my 88 and I'll be the first to say that, I wish I had the money and real estate to keep it forever.
out of all my cars, my 88 CRX Si received the most compliments. Every other time I went to the gas station someone would say something like that. I bought mine for 1000 bucks in 2013 and sold it by 2015.
1988-1991 CRX and Civics were the best civics.
agreed
For sure. I have one with the D16A9 engine French one . Full stock 1989 crx still 146HP on the dyno , mean something like 125HP . Just loose 6HP in 245 000km.
TheBakraa I want to get a stock B16A and just drop it in, No mods at all.
Richard Ojeda in France people now sell crx with b16 approx 8000euros maybe more for very nice ones
I disagree
In 1987 I purchased my first car, a 1985 CRX HF. I was hooked and a Honda fanboy I became. In 1989 I purchased a brand new CRX Si. To this day it is still one of my favorite cars only second to my 2002 S2000. There is a lot of hype around the CRX but honestly, it was something special. In high school I remember friend's dads reliving their youth by buying 60s and 70s muscle cars. I can see us 40 somethings doing the same with CRX's.
Nice to hear your story.
I've owned a 2003 S2000, to me CRX's are way more fun-even w/o swaps!!
travelnguy2002 I've had a 2003 s2000, nice cars however i prefer my 91 CRX si in every way...
I so remember with a quick jerk of the wheel, barking 3rd gear more than once 😀
I have eg turbo typer swap
I daily drive a 1986 Honda CRX DX model which is in between the fuel efficient HF and the sportier Si. It has a carburetor and NO computer at all. It is the Canadian version with no emission controls and even a manual choke. One of the last cars Honda ever made with out an ECU. Runs like a Swiss watch to this day.
Post some vids I like to see that
I owned a USDM 1990 CRX Si for 27 years.
The 1988 CRX Si was the first new car I owned. Loved the car!
Mario Mifsud u still have it, if not why?
Me too. Loved it also. 8 years later I still had dealers calling me asking me if I wanted to sell it.
Nice man I own a B20V 88 Si CRX 🔰
The CRZ could have been a good successor, it doesn't weight much & has the same overall style. If Honda made it with better suspension, and in an "SI" trim with the K series trim i'm sure it wouldn't have been discontinued.
#TRUTH
@@GTContent they couldlve just 21st centuryifed it like people do with everything else
That's what I said from the release of the concept car. It needed to have a hybrid HF trim, R18 DX, and K20 Si package available
If they had made a crz sir I would have bought one. The new type-r is the worst looking car I’ve seen in a while
Truth! A non-hybrid Si, with the 200hp Civic Si engine of the time, would have saved the CRZ.
I'm in the UK and on my third crx. It is an '88 model before the abs and side strengthening bars were added keeping it light.
People love them. When parking or getting fuel, people come over and comment on this great classic.
One thing is for sure, it will never be for sale.
I own a crx. Del sol isn’t a crx I don’t care what anyone says 😂
alex ruiz as a fellow crx owner i agree
^
alex ruiz agreed I owned 2 Del Sols and it's closer to the 6 th Gen CIVIC SI then a crx.. Crx best hatch from Honda period
I concur.
Ive owned first gen crxs an hf and an si. Del sol is not a crx
My out the door price was $8,100 That 1st year of the USDM CRX they did not call the economy engine an HF, they called it the 1.3
Nice to hear your experience.
Correct. HF didn't appear until later.
If CRZ would use K20 Engine it would probably get more attention from enthusiasts, cuz now it is cool looking ride, but not much besides that.
I also own a crx. It is a 1990 model, it has the B16A1 engine with 150hp. In europe its called the EE8. Love it.
A b16 all motor CRX is definitely a dream to me...
Love my crx my girl has a delsol and I want a crz. I will always own a crx
You almost made me cry. I love my civic the same way
I have a 1985 Honda crx SI (first gen) with a b16b VTEC type R engine. I live in Asia so spare parts are everywhere XD
I have a 1991 CRX Si with a turbo D16Y8. Going to throw a B16 turbo in it soon. Grown to love Civics and Hondas in general since having it.
Please do this one on the Prelude!
Indeed
I never knew that the Del Sol was a third gen CRX, thanks Gary!
myusernameisthisduh here in Germany it was launched as the CRX del sol
I remember seeing those when I was in elementary school. Most of them were in bad condition, but modded for street races
Yes, similar experience here. Very rare clean examples these days since the "modding" started so long ago.
I met the Toyota"s engineer who designed the Prius. He told me. The CRX inspired the aerodynamic design of Prius.
Great to hear your experience.
I think you should have included the insight between the del sol and crz.
One of my all time favorites. I had a 87 si and 91 hf
Tiocfaidh ár lá why u sell em if ya like so much?
Good to hear your experience. I plan on getting American car videos out for you guys.
You got it spot on.
Del Slo's were too heavy. They were fun just to cruise in with the top off though....
My 1st car was a 89 HF CRX. ❤
Had mine for 13 yrs. 91& 84 CRX!
I think it's safe to say that my old 88 CRX Si was the best handling car that I owned. U turns were a blast.
I love mine so much. Such a blast to drive around.
Thanks for this video, learned a few more things about about my car. My CRX is by far the funniest car I've ever drove, still turns heads no matter where I go!!
id love to see the Prelude too
Great video with excellent content. 1 thing though, it was the "Vtec" model of the Del Sol that introduced the B16A3 engine, not the Si as mentioned in the video. I feel that was a poor trim naming convention by Honda and they should have went with "SiR" or something like that.
I bought an integra about 2 years ago and became a honda fanboy. I just got a b16a swapped 91 crx si. This car is awesome.
The crx is by far the most interesting car ive owned. Also one of the only hondas that doesn't get alot of flak from other communities
I totally agree. My crx gets so many admirers. Had the car 29 of its almost 31 years. I love it to bits it's a joy to drive.
Good job🔥🔥🔥
No aftermarket hood is needed to clear the B16a engine as I did this swap in my garage at age 17 in 2003 in a 1991 CRX SI. Everything fit just fine.
'84 CRX was my first new car. It would get 47 plus mpg without really trying and was super fun to drive. I wish they would bring it back!
I watched this video before I bought mine, and man, I love it so much. I bought an '85 and it's a beaut
HOW DO THE 1985 CIVIC CRX SI CARS COMPARE TO THE NEW 200 HP 2022 CIVIC SI CARS WHICH ALL ARE NOW 4 DOOR CARS?
I never owned an CRX, but in ‘96, I knew a guy who tuned his and raced his ‘88 CRX. That was my first real introduction into racing culture.
Hopefully honda makes a new crx in the future
They should have kept the CRX and it still would be successful today. I had a 84 and 88 and they were both great cars!
I had a 1988 si and loved it. I just wish Honda could bring it back.
I also think the CR-Z was a spiritual successor to the original Insight, because of the wedge shape and because of the hybrid powertrain
Great story.
Yes the s2000 looks like del sol.
Just picked up an 89 CRX JHM, all stock. Love this car only wish it was a stick like my 91 si was i had 12 years ago..
i consider the honda insight first generation to be a sorta of spiritual successor to the cr-x hf model
My only car is a 93 del Sol. I fully consider it to be a 3rd gen CRX as is had the tag 'CRX' on it outside of the US market.
Its too bad they never put a k20 or the 1.5turbo engine in the crz because its a great car but underpowered
HadesOmega swap swap swap
My neighbor had one of these. He would always try to fix it up on the weekends in his garage.
Thanks! Looking to putting more content out. Glad you're enjoying them.
Learnt to drive in an EF8, still have it even though I've bought an S2k as well.
I drive a 87 crx. Extremely fun car ... in case you didnt know, honda is bringing back the crz with turbo option and they're getting rid of the hybrid (I think it will have an si or type R option as well)
Good to know if that's the case.
Schyler Parker where'd u hear that from?
My first car was a 1987 CRX. I loved that car...& should've kept it.
The crz is other level, I like it
Awesome video like always my friend! 👍👍 also can you do video from Mugen Brand?
I had an '88 CRX Si. It was my second Honda, and the first car I ever bought new, and I loved it to death. I think after 88, they moved the seatbelt anchor from the B pillar to the door frame, which seemed odd to me. The Del Sol was certainly not a CRX, because it had none of the practicality. And yeah--the back was NOT a rear seat, but I still had people who would ride back there. If Honda brought back a real successor, with type R performance, I'd buy it without thinking. Here was mine: plover.net/~agarvin/honda2.jpg
Ok first off it was the b16a and the hood Clarence is only an issue when you put a k20 k24 or a j series.
Andrew Yarusinsky "hood Clarence" sounds gangsta as F!!!
Thought the 1st gen insight was the closest successor. Amazing swaps too.
Whaaaaat? I had no clue you were Hmong. Never even came into my mind. Just knew that you were a dude putting out quality videos. Awesome!
So sad.
I have aa black CR-X JDM Si, they are superb cars. Brilliant video
You're welcome
They should build a new CRX! K20 or even the 1.5T from the Si, compete with the Fiesta and Focus ST, GTI, Veloster, Cooper
The dealer here in Florida the owner has a 1990 red CRX in the showroom that’s mint and along with some other classics
I like de real crx 16 16v
Top version...de bleu v-TEC
I got one when i was 22 year old.
Amazing car!
You cant find them anymore original :(
Mine is all original although I've had alk the rust cut out and her taken back to bare metal and repainted.
Good work Gary, keep up the good work, glad Donut Media isn't the only channel doing these!
Thanks! Hopefully I'm more technical.
