    One of the modifications Straman made was to reinforce the windshield frame. He also used square steel tubes to reinforce the frame rails. The trunk lid was a before fiberglass item. It did not come from any other Honda.
    That seat is also probably why you feel a lack of headroom. The original CRX seats had a very low seating position. I have an 87 lowered about 2". I'm about eye level with the door handles of a Camry in it (I am admittedly short though). The seats in my 87 HF originally came from a 1985 Straman.

  • @oldsbattlecruiser
    @oldsbattlecruiser 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +104

    The prototype was made as a July 1984 Road and Track cover car. There were three ways to order this car - Bring your CRX to Straman in Costa Mesa; Order direct from Straman; or Order through your local Honda dealership. Despite advertisement stating there were 310 converted, production of these CRX's by the R. Straman Co was likely only around 135 or so - which is the highest top stamp number that has been reported by owners. If anybody out there has a CRX Spyder with a metal trunk lid, a few of us are curious to see it. The prototype R&T cover car had a metal trunk lid. Production CRX Spyders have a fiberglass lid.

    I had an 86 CRX HF in the exact same color as the one in Doug's photo at 1:45. I can assure you it did not have 77 horsepower. The HF engine only had around 60 horsepower. • @JayCAlan
      @JayCAlan 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      I had the exact same car. Rated 57 MPG! People don't believe that's possible from 80s tech. But the reason is because it had absolutely zero power. Zero to 60 in the mid teens would not be acceptable today, or even safe.

    • @FlintIronstag23

    My wife and I were standing in a Honda dealership on a Saturday afternoon looking at one of the first 1985 CRX Si when the person closing on it "walked" after a loud argument. Although there was a wait list and I wasn't on it, I offered to buy the car and my offer was accepted. It turned out to be quite a fun car, roomy and practical. I sometimes wished for the Straman convertible version but the sunroof was huge and one of the first I remember that opened externally. I sometimes longed for the more powerful 1600cc twin-cam engine and back seat from the European version. I replaced the tiny sealed beam headlights with larger and better 200mm rectangular E-code Cibie headlights, installed OEM front fog lights and a Hella rear fog light, a high mounted stop light from a Porsche 944 and a cruise control kit from Sears. The car's ground clearance was huge - perfect for winter ski trips and great fun on Colorado mountain roads. A wonderful car and only positive memories.

      What market are you in out of curiosity? Because naming schemes seem to depend on the market. The 84s in the US were 1300 and 1500 (same as the Civic) but in Japan and Europe they were the 1.3 and 1.5, and then the 1.5i which we got in the US as the Si. This is the best Doug video in a long time. I hope it gets big views so he makes more of this type of car. I know he's said before that he has to go for the view count and I get it.
    Anyways. That car looks amazing to own and drive. I have both 90s nostalgia of my first car combined with my love of my current convertible.
    I had a 92 ford probe lx (0-60 in 8 sec stock with it's 4 speed transmission) and it had sideways door handles. Plus pop-up headlights. Plus automatic seat belts which I love. The aesthetic of the CRX interior is very similar too. In the era when I owned that car, it was very sporty compared to my friends' cars. This was a year when the mustang GT did 0-60 in 7 seconds.
    My current daily car is a 2010 lexus is350c which I love. There is a ton of reasons why, but it's my first convertible. Top up is very private, top down removes all blind spots. I'd actually love to see Doug's take on it, but it wouldn't be a very good video for view counts because the car isn't in high demand or very interesting otherwise.

If I recall correctly, there was even a “0-30” acceleration and I believe the CRX had the distinction of being the first ever leader in MPG and 0-30!

    name it, I cooked em, the 2 nd gear was all it had, but it was enough.
    forget the highway though, as the 3 rd left you standing, next to mustangs or the sort.
    looking back however, this was a kamikaze car, one hit and you re done for...
    starting without a starter was a breeze, just push it a bit, get the 2nd gear in,
    and voila! the car will start like a charm, even in winter time.
