More importantly it is the only hybrid car with a stick shift. Shame they didn't do its sister car, (The newer Insight,) with a stick. That'd make a nifty commuter.
stick shift!? They're CVT auto with... Paddle shifters(?!) it is decently quick in sport mode but CVT is zero fun to drive. But I did feel I immediately at home when I sat in the cockpit, even after 7 years since I had my CRX.
Great review. I had an '85 and an '88 CRX Si. Both manual. They were great little cars, quick off the line and fun to throw around. Typical understeer with the FWD, but you learned to just nose it and go. Plus, being a hatchback you could carry a surprising amount of stuff for such a small car. Finally, this thing was so easy to park that my friends and I came up the the term "CRX parking spot" when looking for a place to park in the city as it could fit in spots that most other cars could not.
I will back up the "CRX parking spot" term. I drove an 89 CRX at the time and was running late to my college graduation. I found 13 feet of space and put my car into it. Perfect..
I remember my owner's manual had a very serious page about 'air flow through the cabin' being important to maintaining the car. I took it seriously (still do) but don't really understand why it matters. Do plenty of driving with the windows open- but I still moderate/monitor that vent system.
Hey, be glad you never got the B16 powered ones. In Europe we got those and all of them have been tuned and abused until there was not a single one left. Only the SOHC cars survived and that is really a shame.
OMG! That's sick! I know someone who did a similar thing to AE86-es in an era when they were dirt cheap. The good part is that he regrets doing that now. ;
***** Actually despite being a cheap 19 years old car when I bought it (~3000€) - it was about twice as expensive as D16Z5/A8/A9 powered models with just 20hp difference (yep, dual cam D16 engine was also missing from US lineup). ED9's (D16 powered models)are still dismantled for pieces, while EE8 (B16 engine) are generally salvaged unless crashed, some examples are going up in prices
I will be 18 in some months, I want to own a CRX as my first car and I can’t even find one with less than 400.000km and they are all tuned to hell in a bad way, the homemade tuning way.. I am really sad, hoping to find a factory one 😔
***** You're right, very good point...although I think most people still regarded it as a domestic car due to most of the vehicle being American / plain ignorance.
This brings me back - I owned an '89 CRX Si in the early-mid 90s, and that car provided more memories and stories than anything I've owned since. It may have been underpowered, but it had a quality that was unknown by 1990s South Jersey standards: agility. It was a car in which to practice your rev-matching and turn every highway on-ramp into a special stage. What a great little car, and the definition of the whole being more than the sum of its parts.
I worked for a Honda dealer back in the early 1990's. The CRX SI and a couple of years later its quasi replacement the Del Sol SI were go karts that put a smile on your face, especially in their manual variants. This example deserves a little rust and dent repair and a paint job. It looks like its got good bones to work from.
That was beautiful! My first car was a nine-year-old Civic sedan. 1.5 litres, dual carburettors, 96hp of tyre-shredding fury! It wasn't fast, it wasn't cool, it was VERY sensible. But by God, that car took a thrashing year-in year-out and never quit. It even won club-level autocross/motorkhana events outright!

Loving that little Chilean flag! Cheers from Santiago My second car was a 99' Toyota Corolla that used to belong to my grandma, it was in a flood all the way to the windows, but after some cleaning, it ran, with forever electrical gremlins, one night I was at a bar with some friends drunk asf and I got that feeling of "I need to check the car" we went out just in time to watch a thief drive away with the beige blob, only to left it stranded in the stoplight, the guy couldn't get it to start again (you needed to gently tap in the relays when that happens) so he abandoned the car and I got it back and kept on drinking.

Oh man I bought a 91 Civic Si last week and does this review hit home SO much. First thing I did on the previous owner's recommendation is purchase a quick-release steering wheel to deter would be thieves like the story Regular told. It only weighs 90 pounds more than the CRX, but you get rear seats and it still handles like an NA Miata.
@@seanc6170 I had an a brand new 87 FX16 GTS in white. Loved the car and one could argue it was better looking, at least in a boyracer sort of way. But it definitely was missing what the Civic SI and the CRX SI offered as far as driving dynamics.
+olskoolnewpaint I want one now...but one with 200K miles and NO RUST still costs $3k. And good luck finding a stock one that hasn't been jacked up by some man-child with $2 to his name a some tools he took from his daddy's garage.
RCPro Driver Yeah, for a decent clean one you're gonna pay about 3k. I've seen low mileage minty fresh and stock Si's from the South go for upwards of 8k on ebay. It's a trade off, b/c you could also find a k20 supercharged done right for a little less and have a screaming little machine lol.
olskoolnewpaint all true. I love the front end of the CRX/EF though. Another old Honda Id love to have again in good shape is the '89 Honda accord LXi. Had one before, removed AC and power steering, added SRI and advanced ignition timing. Even though it was a auto trans, it was a quick car. Light for a 4door sedan. Love the flip up lights and sunroof. The hatchback version of that accord looked nice too.
You know what I think is the best part of these videos? Mr. Regulars politeness. These people volunteer their cars to him for these reviews expecting him to drive it and get a feeling from them. Yet he still asks politely before smashing the throttle, I’m sure people expect it anyways but that fact that he still asks impresses me.
A friend had a 1984 CRX, with the 1.3 liter engine... and it was a *dog.* Nothing "sporty" about it, slow as tar and steered like a cow.... ... But another friend had a 1990 si, and holy hell that thing was a blast. Not quite as hoon-able as her beloved old Fiat X-19, but definitely a flingable dream. (And obviously more reliable than the Fiat, duh.)

In high school my dad bought me one 2 weeks before my 16th birthday, it was a 92 Automatic, all black and clean as hell. 1 Week before my 16th birthday I got my report card, 2 D's and an F. 2 Days before my 16th Birthday my dad sold it to my best friend. 1 Week after my 16th birthday my dad paid $400 Dollars for the neighbors 88 Ford Tempo... i literally had to watch my best friend drive MY CAR to school for the next 2 1/2 years...FML.. 4 Years later i was in Central Texas while serving in the army i managed to buy the same car and loved every single minute of it, what i wouldnt give to have this little thing back. I didnt add any modifications to it, or get a sub in the back. It just ran great and never let me down. Plus it felt really great to send my dad those pictures of the "new car" as if to say 'F you old man, i got one anyway",.....
TheAsianpage Why are Hondas always stolen and getting broke into in the US? It's not the first time I hear about this so I have been wondering for a while.
William Gson I'm thinking about this too , it may be because it is a tuner car you can modify it easy and you can easily find how a civic works or how to stole it,such a common car. Maybe because young people like civic and there might be more young robber. Tell me what you think.
Mr. Regular, phantom shitters are no joke. Somebody defecated into a bulk head 5 foot off the ground on the ship where I️ work. The ledge was only 10” wide.
My uncle had two of these once a mid 80's one and early 90's one, the early 90's one was Si. I remember riding in them a few times and while not fast it handled well and was fun, this car was the reason I wanted to learn to drive "stick" shift as soon as possible lol
Car and Driver magazine referred to the CRX Si as the “thin wallet Ferrari”, which wasn’t actually all that hyperbolic. Even though we didn’t get the Japan-spec motor, these things handled like they were on rails and had decent power which made them formidable competitors against their contemporaries from Nissan, Toyota, and Mazda.
My crx got broken into 3 times!! Ahhh my first car!! A 1.6L single cam with a vtec head. T3/t4 turbo and a 3inch exhaust. Traffic jam escort at the finest!! The "sorry I don't have room for passengers" car. The there's plenty of parking car.
Just yesterday while I was out at our local park (lucky not closed) walked back out to the parking lot and saw a CRX in Pristine external condition. Perfect grey paint with no dings or scratches or paint wear (I walked around it after I made sure nobody was looking) and it even had the little red/blue trim on the sides. Head and tail lights weren't dirty, had a fresh coat of wax, thing looked marvelous. That guy is getting some money out of that thing.
I know this video is 4 years old, but it inspired me to trade my Eclipse for a CRX Si. It took me that long to find just a CRX in general lol. Happy that I have one of very few SI models here. I don't drive stick, but I learned how years ago and somehow this car brought back everything. So to anyone who doesn't know how or wants to refresh course on how to drive stick, get this car. You can shift up at 4500 rpm, which most cars can't handle. I usually go around the neighborhood in second or third gear (25 to about 30ish mph). I am having to restore my CRX currently. Busted windshield, hood, front bumper, and currently looking for the original rims. I still use it to go get groceries and occasionally take it out for a quick lap. Thanks for inspiring me to get this car. The Eclipse won't be missed
My brother bought an EK hatch, 96 civic. He taught me how to drive manual in it because since he was deployed in another state, I was to be responsible for it since he bought it to have a car here in Cali. Long story short, the car came with noticeable mods, the day after he left back to base, the car was gone. Only had the car for a week. Was found the day after about 8-10 miles away, stripped. I loved that car, and I still love the EK hatches, and I've always wanted a CRX.
The CR-X it seems like all the other over-hyped Hondas, the S2K and NSX have less power than you've been lead to believe but are still a blast to drive.
TheS2Guy You speak truth. I have the S2000 and it is a 240 horsepower, 2800 pound machine with a fairly short geared six speed so it's quick, but it isn't fast. But on a good back road it'll just plaster the grin all up and down your face, and you can daily the car and it won't nickel and dime you and it's nice on the highway, and people tend to think it's far newer and far more expensive than it actually is...
Maybe overhyped in a drag race but a CRX can carve through traffic and slalom with the best of them. My stock crx si with 98 hp could out accelerate pretty much anything you're likely to see on the road with 4 wheels though 2nd gear(45ish mph)
Trevor Reis They're certainly not sluggish cars, but they're not the pseudo-supercars that some owners make them out to be. They're lightweight, have a high red line and handle nicely, and beautiful cars.
HOLY SHIT! 1:17, that's no texas flag, it's the flag of Chile { ; , never thought i was gonna see one on this show, keep up the good work. Very funny stuff. Some random Chilean fan.
I bought a CRXSI straight off the show room floor in 91. Think it cost me 12,500 back then. Thieves tried to steal it twice and I never understood why they wanted it. The only problem the car had was the front axles would wear out and the rubber boots would crack. Had them replaced 3 times and I said I would never own a front wheel drive again.
My brother and I stopped in Marfa, and saw the Marfa lights the same day this came out! I watched the video after we got back from the light observation area. Trippy. The lights know all.
In the U.S. the first generation of CRX ran from 1984 to 1987. The Si version ran from mid 1985 to 1987 with a complete redesign in 1986, so many 1985 Si parts won't fit the 1986 and 1987 cars. The second generation of CRX ran from 1988 to 1991. My first CRX was a new 1984 model. I got it in Jr. High school. I traded it in on a new 1986 CRX Si that I murdered out, long before it became popular 30 years later. It was black, I put 2% limo tint on the windows and removed the 14 inch allow wheels with Michelin tires and replaced them with black Enkei aluminum mesh wheels with Goodyear Eagle GT Gatorback tires. I then installed a Mugen turbo and exhaust. That was one fun little car. I sold it my senior year in high school for more than I had in it. Not until I started buying midyear Corvettes was I able to sell a car for more than I had in them. I will always have fond memories of my CRX's.
I had a '88 CRX Si, which I bought brand new, replacing my '85 Accord SE-i after a wreck, back in the day--about 200 lbs lighter than the older ones like this (I think mandated side door protection added the extra weight?), seat belts that weren't attached to the door. Yeah, there was no back seat, but I was in college, and often had 1 or even two people riding in the back... "area". By the time I traded it for a '99 Civic LX, I swear every conjunction of plastic in the car rattled or squeaked. I had little pieces of paper stuffed in cracks all over the place. I do get nostalgic for it now and then, which is what brought me here. Cheers!
TheImperfectGuy BlueRockEye there were CRXs in Initial D. Used as "background cars", like normal traffic or to fill roads with cars, but still... there were. Just Google CRX initial d
Wonderful video... in brings back memories. I had a '90 CRX Si. It remains my favorite car (nostalgia). The air conditioning went out will driving from work (San Ramon, CA) home (Berkeley, where I rarely if ever used it). The sunroof quit working long before. It was actually otherwise in very good condition (we have minimal rust problems here in the SF Bay Area). It was 12 years old, I didn't want to pay to fix the A/C or sunroof and wanted a new car. I looked at the Audi TT , Toyota's MR2 Spyder and the Mazda Miata. I really did like my 12 year old CRX better. I was more than once criticized for driving my "sports car," often having to correct the those who complained that it was not a sports car that it was an economy car. I averaged 'bout 35 mpg if memory serves correctly. One woman quipped I drove it like a sports car :0. In 2002 I purchased a new S2000, a brilliant machine. I still have it (less than 65,000 mi.) I like it a lot, but not nearly as much as my CRX. I had to purchase another vehicle (2003 Honda Element) just to move things (it has about 170,000 mi.) I haven't had a commute in 5 years. What you said, especially about thievery and offers to purchase the vehicle are true. Excepting that apparently the thieves in the Bay Area knew how to disable the door locks by slightly prying the molding near the lock, damn near every Honda of that era has messed up moldings where the handle meets the metal. My CRX was for me the ultimate utility vehicle. I moved sofas and large trees in it... an incredibly versatile vehicle. If the CRZ was as utilitarian and fun to drive as my CRX I would've consider buying it. Note: I did never modify any aspect of my CRX Si except replacing the oft stolen radio. As i mentioned before when it was 12 years old it had very good appearance and other than the A/C and sunroof good condition. Thanks for the trip....

Slickpete83 I think CRZ's look pretty neat both inside and out. I would daily one without hesitation.
***** lol a NA-4 when the entire segment has gone turbo. Why wont Honda get with the times?
stick shift!? They're CVT auto with... Paddle shifters(?!)
it is decently quick in sport mode but CVT is zero fun to drive. But I did feel I immediately at home when I sat in the cockpit, even after 7 years since I had my CRX.
I wonder how many people came here expecting a boring typical review only to hear what mr. regular says at 0:17 and to close the video xD.
Perfect..
85crx is best crx. Unpopular opinion I know but I said what I said.
The best part of the CRX was the driver oriented gauge cluster. Like a cockpit!
this vid makes me proud to own a CRX
Lucky you 🔥

That vent switch was probably my favorite feature of mine.
You make it sound like it was a mass extinction event
OMG! That's sick!
I know someone who did a similar thing to AE86-es in an era when they were dirt cheap. The good part is that he regrets doing that now. ;
banpeinet Mine is still rollin!
Look at it this way: If M&Ms can re-introduce the crispy variety, Honda one day may create a new model of the CRX. And NO, the CR-Z does not count.
@@dodecahedron1 it dosen't, it's just not the same, don't fool yourself...
@@dodecahedron1 crz is heavy, doesnt handle well for a honda, and boring to drive. Nothing could be more opposite of the crx.

Now that would be cool
***** You're right, very good point...although I think most people still regarded it as a domestic car due to most of the vehicle being American / plain ignorance.
This brings me back - I owned an '89 CRX Si in the early-mid 90s, and that car provided more memories and stories than anything I've owned since. It may have been underpowered, but it had a quality that was unknown by 1990s South Jersey standards: agility. It was a car in which to practice your rev-matching and turn every highway on-ramp into a special stage. What a great little car, and the definition of the whole being more than the sum of its parts.

No wonder they get stolen so much. They need them to finish that damn list.
Stayed up all night for this! Waiting till 4 am lol

Laying in the hospital watching your reviews. Thanks Mr Regular for making me smile 👍😊
I'm so glad I found this channel. Best content I've watched in years.
just recently discovered this channel. my say on this is that this is different. and different is good. who the fuck else is making car review videos like this. NO ONE. and that is why i applause slash appreciate slash enjoy the fuck out of the videos you make. i also highly appreciate the comedy of these videos, it makes me laugh my ass off. way to be original you're like top gear when Jeremy Clarkson was part of it. totally shook up the perspective of how car review videos should be like.
I'm no real gear head. Nor am I someone to spout verbage from literary greats. That said, I truly appreciate this King of Prussia's videos and insightful, through moderately coarse commentary.
Still crying from how dirty and mistreated this CRX is.
I remember that air vent switch! My family used to own a 91 Civic DX...the very base model haha
Loving that little Chilean flag! Cheers from Santiago
My second car was a 99' Toyota Corolla that used to belong to my grandma, it was in a flood all the way to the windows, but after some cleaning, it ran, with forever electrical gremlins, one night I was at a bar with some friends drunk asf and I got that feeling of "I need to check the car" we went out just in time to watch a thief drive away with the beige blob, only to left it stranded in the stoplight, the guy couldn't get it to start again (you needed to gently tap in the relays when that happens) so he abandoned the car and I got it back and kept on drinking.
tenía la duda si era una bandera chilena o de texas jajaj
The crx was my first car, 15 years old, I had two. This was so amazing man. Spot on!
Canada here...my 89 SI is keeping me sane in these hard hard times... locked in for Covid, can't go out for fear of losing my shit on someone about George Floyd...thank you Honda, thank you Extreme Daily Drivers and Garage Built Hondas, thank you YoungStatic...you keep me focused on my CRX... don't turn your eyes from reality, but find yourselves a project-anything...stay sane, make good decisions people...one love

I want to see a 4th gen Honda Prelude, I've got a 92 Prelude Si with the 4 wheel steering, its a great car
You got your wishes
Oh man I bought a 91 Civic Si last week and does this review hit home SO much. First thing I did on the previous owner's recommendation is purchase a quick-release steering wheel to deter would be thieves like the story Regular told. It only weighs 90 pounds more than the CRX, but you get rear seats and it still handles like an NA Miata.
Now find a working Corolla FX16

I had an a brand new 87 FX16 GTS in white. Loved the car and one could argue it was better looking, at least in a boyracer sort of way. But it definitely was missing what the Civic SI and the CRX SI offered as far as driving dynamics.
Yet another shiny gem in the RegularCars jewel encrusted oeuvre. Well done, sir! And thank you.
I used to want one so bad back in the 80s.
+Martin Smith I wanted one so bad in the late 90's but still couldn't afford one. Damn re-sale Honda value lol.
+olskoolnewpaint I want one now...but one with 200K miles and NO RUST still costs $3k. And good luck finding a stock one that hasn't been jacked up by some man-child with $2 to his name a some tools he took from his daddy's garage.
RCPro Driver
Yeah, for a decent clean one you're gonna pay about 3k.
I want one so badly in 2020, these cars are legends
You know what I think is the best part of these videos? Mr. Regulars politeness. These people volunteer their cars to him for these reviews expecting him to drive it and get a feeling from them. Yet he still asks politely before smashing the throttle, I’m sure people expect it anyways but that fact that he still asks impresses me.

These and integras were always broken into back in the days.
TheAsianpage Yep. My 1985 CRX Si was stolen when I left it parked on the street outside a friends house in downtown San Francisco.
Too true. I had a CRX DX as a first car 13 years ago and it was broken into almost monthly for a year and a half.
William Gson Parts. Integras were popular for their B18's and B17's.

"serious as salvia" 🤣
smash8979 Astute description, salvia is most certainly no laughing matter when used correctly.

My first car ❤️

TheS2Guy it is, but if you were to get an overhyped honda that isnt a type R, the CRX would be the one to get.
King Geedorah Oh yeah, I'd love to own a CR-X some day.
Until then I'll have to settle for the non-CR-X Civic.

Redsuns license plate on a CRX?
I bought a CRXSI straight off the show room floor in 91. Think it cost me 12,500 back then. Thieves tried to steal it twice and I never understood why they wanted it. The only problem the car had was the front axles would wear out and the rubber boots would crack. Had them replaced 3 times and I said I would never own a front wheel drive again.
They say that this car is a FWD Miata.
It is, this crx was mine. I have owned 2 CRX's and 3 Miatas. Settled on a B16A CRX.
Johnhae P I’ve heard that about the Del sol, although not much can compare to a Miata, atleast nothing that’s fwd
My people you mean dude in blue smh
My brother and I stopped in Marfa, and saw the Marfa lights the same day this came out! I watched the video after we got back from the light observation area. Trippy. The lights know all.
i bet you some people there thinks that the flag there is texas not Chile :P
In the U.S. the first generation of CRX ran from 1984 to 1987.
A chilean flag in the rear bumper?
Cheers!
That license plate is a joke. A pitiful one. There were no CR-X in Initial Demerol.
TheImperfectGuy WHY ISN'T THERE A CR-X IN INITIAL D??!! 😭

Is this Matt Farah's million-mile CR-X where VTEC doesn't kick in?
I think this is my favorite era of this channel
