(1) Build a water fountain or sink in all your settlements. You can use a water pump instead, but pumps are costlier to build and slower to use. Anytime you are near a settlement, take a few swigs to reset the timer. (2) Don't use items if you could just wait and use your endless water sources. (3) Purified water will show up in an empty workbench anytime your settlement is over producing, so over produce everywhere (even if it is just having too many hand pumps). (4) Use your bottles for dirty water only and use them with Razorgrass to make noodles - they weigh no more than water and they both hydrate and feed. (5) If you wait until you are hungry/thirsty to eat/drink then you don't get the HP - but if you use them for HP you get the food/hydration benefits from them - so use them to heal. (6) If you go slow and don't rush the game you will spend your early levels surrounded by settlements. Use that time to build up your supplies.
My tip. Get chemist rank 1 perk and create refreshing beverages. 1 is enough to fully quench thirst and it removes all rads, cures all addictions and heals you to full health faster than a stimpac would. It's quite the overpowered healing item.
I started fo4 for the first time at the beginning of quarantine, and I think I'm confident enough with the game mechanics to try out survival mode. Thanks for these videos!!
Having 4 or 5 refreshing beverages is best Pro-tip I can offer. They are an instant replenishment of health and stats, and you’re not penalized in any way for using them, and they taste great! 😉
A Dovahkiin I found out a neat trick for when your oven encumbered. When your over encumbered if you have a melee weapon except fast hitting weapons you can, if you go into thirdperson in then pull out your melee and swipe periodically you kinda "teleport" a bit. So since I'm bad at explaining things If you go in thirdperson. pull out a medium or slow weapon ( I haven't tested with slow ) then swipe you will get a bit more distance.
As simple as it seems, I was really surprised by the idea of storing your water (and possibly food items) in a container near the beginning of a dungeon. I hadn't even considered that! Despite the fact that I would likely do the same in a real life situation (leave stuff that I don't need for the task at hand in a secure location), it never even crossed my mind in the game. Great stuff :)
When you set up your little home-away-from-home, I would add a container or two. You may find something you want to keep for later use but don't want to carry around with you until the time to use it comes around. For instance, I like my provisioners to be outfitted with good armor, including a yellow flight helmet, and a good gun. The helmet looks distinctive, making them easily identifiable, and has perception +1 which may help in their defense.
hey just to show how much codsworth can hold compared to other companions...i was able to give him a full set of t45 power armor and he still had plenty of space left to store other goodies
Ok I know this is 4 years old but I love your videos! Thank you for all of these tutorials and tips because it really helps for beginners and newbies to the game like me. +1 sub ;)
I had no idea I could fill bottles - but somehow the game was kind enough to let me drink radiated water without much damage and gave me some soda eventually I became sick but after a good while - I began to get really frustrated without knowing three useful tips - 1 bottle filling means free purified water 2 planning - I had no idea I had to plan, I was used to just running around lol foolish and 3 you can make medicine instead of buying it or finding it
Did survival mode get made easier or something? I've been playing for about the past year and I only play on survival, and I use mods that remove a lot of stuff from the world because there's way too much for it being 200 years after the bombs fell, and I've never had any kind of thirst/hunger problems. In fact I usually carry about 20-30 purified waters and when I return home I store the extra that I've picked up, usually around 1-20. I know you can get ill by drinking dirty water, but I've never had to, and I RP so I don't collect the bottles in the vault or use any "get rich quick" schemes like making and selling purified water. The "survival" option is really not about survival IMO, it's just more realism having to eat and drink. But then, all of Fallout is like that. I've always found it weird how there are "poor" and starving people in Fallout when it's almost impossible to avoid being rich. I don't even pick up weapons or armour to sell because I've never been able to sell the ammo I collect due to vvendors having so little money.
This game needs a canteen (and binoculars) because I'm burning through bottles like crazy. It's frustrating because the combat armor I'm wearing has a canteen on it. You just can't use it.
+Hedgehobbit I know right! I've heard people say they like that you have to keep finding new bottles all the time, because if you could just keep the same bottle it wouldn't be as hard. Well, maybe true, but it's not as realistic. And it's way more frustrating. Having to keep one canteen full all the time could be just as hard too. I know because I've played tons of Skyrim with a needs mod installed, in which they added canteens to the game, and I was constantly trying to find places where I could refill it. I don't like that Survival Mode has turned empty bottles into the most valuable loot item in the game. Shutting up now, because I could rant about this for a long time.
I like the vid, im planning my next play threw as a hermit crab type. NO bos, NO minute-men. So it will be a, carry only necessary items, and sell the rest.
I know these videos are a tad old but you have definitely made me think about actually trying out survival mode. Thanks! XD Oh and please put out the last three videos if you haven't already.
I'm doing a canibal playthrough right now but i'm going to end it soon after that a stealth one then a survival one so i'm storing knowledge (in my garage) for the survival one
idiot savant can really help increase your levels especially with an intelligence 1 starting stat first perk, 11% chance to get 3x xp for anything, then at next level 5x, have that go off a few times from turning in story quests and just watch the lvls pop, plus i dont find the sound it makes annoying lol
yea :/ i started my survival mode today and made 2 little areas for supplies in red rocket and sanctuary. i got dogmeat and i'm about to storm the museum and save preston.
why not take the bottles in sanctuary and go back to thr vault to get purified water instead of the dirty water you'll get from the water pump in sanctuary??
WHAT?! Purify dirty water?! NEVER DO THAT!!! Always fill bottles with dirty water and store it in working bench because you need dirty water to cook and cant use purified instead.

All these years later and im still planning my fallout survival play through here. Thank you
Just starting survival mode, thanks for your videos!

I have to say, even though I've just stumbled onto this video on a TH-cam binge, these are very well made, looking forward to the next one.

then swipe
you will get a bit more distance.
I also have another tip bit I forgot it.

If you have the VaultTec DLC, you can place the VaultTec fountain because the water is purified
I hang one on the wall in Home Plate at the very least. Filling a bunch of bottles does take quite a few button pushes. Never tried the sink.
I had no idea you could fill bottles! Thank you!
Take every empty bottle and go back to vault 111 and fill them all with purified water free and easy. Use other glass items for glass scrap.
Loving this new series so far! I adore this mode and can't wait to start a new game with it. Especially once console mods are released.

I would worry about my stuff disappearing when the container spawns new items.

Wow this is really good, you do a better do job than half of these dudes on TH-cam. straight to the point and very informative.
a refreshing beverage is the best to have

plz don't hate me but this was alot better than I expected
+Oswald The Lucky Rabbit Well thanks! I think, lol!
U can build a clean water sink in the settlement and you are set :)
Thorough and concise.
Thanks! This is very helpful! Steam sales urged me to bought this game 😊

hey...doesn't codsworth occasionally give you purified water? I'm almost certain he does, which would make him a great companion..
Yes, he does, very occasionally. But you have to talk to him first in order to get him to do it, and he doesn't do it every time you talk to him.
yea :/ i started my survival mode today and made 2 little areas for supplies in red rocket and sanctuary. i got dogmeat and i'm about to storm the museum and save preston.
I got 2 levels strait up from idiot savant for turning in a quest so its pertty good 7lv-9lv

Water pumps produce pure water.

Dirty water has it's uses but in Survival pure water is a necessity.
Just say grab some empty bottles !!!!!!
“Hunger and Thirst” in this game is absolutely dreadful... just my opinion.
