    My tip for food, is as soon as you can head on south from Sanctuary to the Sunshine Tidings CO-OP. You'll have to deal with a few ghouls but once clear there is a wasteland survival magazine you can pick up in the room with the loot chest. It's just on the floor near the chest. The perk it gives you gives you double meat from any animal you kill. You can then cook it and have more than enough rad free food to stave off starvation, and a number of great buffs from the food too.

    You find it harder to manage your thirst? In the first settlement when you build one purifier it will produce plenty of water. Also hoarding empty bottles and filling them from a simple pump in your settlement will provide tons of clean water. Every time you are near a settlement you can drink directly from the pump as well. Usually the routine is you sleep to save, drink from a pump to full and you head out. I find it harder to have enough food because the crops you grow are irradiated and clean food doesnt come free. Bethesda should've added some cooking recipes for vegetable soups with clean water and the crops you grow in my opinion. You should have a good reason to invest in your settlement after all.

    • @edmartin875
      @edmartin875 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you plant a small garden at each settlement and have at least one settler there, you will have food to pick every time you visit the settlement. Any extra crops and/or pure water will be in the workshop and should be removed to yourself or a container at every visit as workshop stored food and water attracts attackers.

    Build a Food Processor and you can create clean food easily.
    3 Tato + 1 Cloth will get you Preserved Instamash
    1 Carrot + 1 Razorgrain + 1 Purified Water + 1 Plastic will get you (Clean) Blamco Mac-n-Cheese
    The first is super cheap to make, the second only weighs 0.1 instead of 0.5 like most foods.
    Wild Mutfruit also only weighs 0.1 and is common around Sanctuary to build up and don't have many Rads (only 2).
    Of course, since all your bottles are going to dirty water, you can combine them with Razorgrain to make noodles (which are food and water, making them a great healing item, since every time you use one to cure hp or one status, they reset the timer(s) for the other status(es)).
    Running down the Sunshine Co-op also nets you the magazine that doubles the meat from most critters. That is very helpful for producing more food on the go (cook stations are common across the entire map).

    I've heard that survival mode greatly reduces the rate at which new monsters respawn. This seems to have affected my hunting as I don't find as many molerats and delicious wild dogs roaming around. I need to hunt further and further away.
    Also, since eating doesn't give you hit points back, the Pip Boy will show 0 HP for each food item. What I've noticed is that the message "You are properly fed" is slightly delayed after eating but the Pip Boy health values change instantly. So watching that number as you munch down on Mutt Chops will show you exactly when you can stop eating. I used to wait for the message and tended to over eat and waste food. This is true with water as well.

    • @edmartin875
      @edmartin875 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you run across any wild food, pick it. You can eat that to reduce hunger while your HP is not increasing. As soon as you are no longer hungry, eat cooked food to regain lost HP.

    Great video! I never had issues with finding raw meat to cook almost every where you go there's animals to kill had more issues with water until i found out you can fill beer bottles with water from the well. i normally carry 15 purified water 2 ragstag 4 molerat chunks and 4 mutt chops at the least. And if you find the magazine that gives you extra meat from dead animals it helps a lot.

  • @stevesweeney70
    @stevesweeney70 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Watched your videos on both hunger and thirst. I'm pretty much done a very thorough and long (and only) playthrough on survival mode and after some testing, my #1 food/drink item is Noodle Cup. When I get the "parched" notification, I eat a single noodle cup and it clears the thirst. By doing this, I would *never* get the hunger notification. Thirst occurs more frequently than hunger, so you're always ahead of your hunger this way.
    Also, should you get the hunger notification, NOT all foods are created equal. Some will satisfy that hunger in a single shot (with no healing or special effects), such as a steak, while mutt chops will take two to clear the hunger. For that reason, I also carried some light food with me (e.g., iguana or squirrel) just in case I was late in eating my noodle cup and also got a hunger. Then I would take a noodle cup and a small snack.
    If you have to take medicine, you will get thirsty. For that, I carry some purified water to cut some of the thirst, plus I down a noodle cup for the rest (two drinks required to clear "thirsty" from antibiotics or rad-x).
    This plan works best if you are doing some settlements. Once I have them up and running, I move most or allfood production over to Razorgrain. You don't need more than the population, but you will then have to harvest the grain yourself whenever you pass through that settlement. Collect bottles like an alcoholic hoarder and fill them with DIRTY water only. You can actually make purified water at a settlement (as shown in video), plus purified water is much more readily found as loot. Bottles are for dirty water (using my system) except for the early game, where you won't have enough razorgrain anyway.

    I like collecting the ingredients for the lightest food with the best hunger satisfaction - I think its Iguana Sticks as far as I can tell - and only eating them when I'm away from another food source like a settlement

  • @TheProAce99
    @TheProAce99 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    On my survival playthough I have used Mutfruit as my only food source for so long. Mutfruit weighs only 0.1 pounds so you can carry insane amounts of it. Unfortunately Mutfruit has radiation but that can be alleviated by rank 3 of the Lead Belly perk.
    Just reached level 67 on my survival playthough the beginning is aggravating but late game you turn into a tank just like normal mode.

    • @wneubert2
      @wneubert2 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did this too, but I never went for lead belly because the radiation was so minor. It takes 10 rads to lower your health by 1, so it was never enough to matter. I also built decontamination arches at my settlements because I refused to take radaway due to it's negatives.

  • @swissarmyknight4306
    @swissarmyknight4306 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    In regular mode, melons are a little pointless. In survival mode, melons are great for eating around your base when crafting, building, whatever. They supply you with one serving of food and one serving of hydration. They hit you with some rads, but by the mid game you should have a decontamination arch, so its trivial. I keep a small patch of 5 melon plants in my main base for snacking. Not so great to carry with you, since they're 1 pound apiece, but it doesn't matter when you're at your base and they spare you having to eat more weight efficient food and drink when you're at home.

    I have found that Cram is twice as effective as raw produce, such as corn or mutfruit. I haven't gotten sick from cram yet. I've tried 4 files each getting to level 10-15 each, but I had other problems with those before deleting them.

    • @WastelandDovahkiin
      @WastelandDovahkiin  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my game Cram (and any other kind of food) had the same values as raw produce. I did quite a lot of testing too. Weird. I'm curious how you went about testing it. I would just eat different foods when I was in the first stage of hunger, which is Peckish. I always did it immediately after entering that stage too, so my hunger was always at the exact same level each time. No matter what I ate, it always took two food items to satisfy my hunger when peckish. Didn't matter if it was mutfruit or Cram or anything else.

      @TheGilgameshepic ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Obviously it has been a very long time, but yes, I play Survival pretty much exclusively now when I play FO4 (on Playstation 4) and I have also noticed Cram seems to bring me back from peckish to sated with just one can - I haven't really tried it on any other levels of hunger as I try not to let it ever drop below peckish, so I can't say if it is universally twice as effective or only works to get from Peckish to sated, but, despite the weight and radiation, it's probably my go to pre-war food (partly because I am one of those weirdos who likes its real world equivalent, spam...lol). Of course you could argue that 2 gum drops does exactly the same job for less weight, and you'd be absolutely right, however playing for the immersion factor, which is why I enjoy Survival, it just feels more legitimate to ward off hunger with a can of cram than a couple of packets of sweets.

    The advice is good but not where to get food. What about how to farm? Can't you farm in this game and cook whatever you grow?

    • @edmartin875
      @edmartin875 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Settlers do the farming, not you. You plant the crops. Farmers maintain the crops. Harvesting is automatic daily except what you harvest. The auto harvest also deducts what the Settlers eat and store the remainder in the Workshop. (Except in my Sanctuary Workshop. It only stores pure water.)
      You assign the job of farming to Settlers. Farmers will care for 6 food items, which means two plants to produce one food except for Mutfruit which produces 1 food per plant. I like to plant 6 of each of the 7 different food types. This needs only 4 farmers and produces 24 food per game day.
      Anytime I go to a Settlement I remove all food and water in the Workshop, then store it in a nearby container. (I use red toolboxes.) I do this because a lot of food and/or pure water stored in the Workshop attracts attackers. (Actually, it just increases the odds the Settlement will be attacked. The norm is a 2% chance per game day.)
      Where to get the food ? The manned farms are raising their favorite crop of food. Some have only 1 food type, like Tenpines Bluff, growing only tatos. But Grey Gardens grows everything but Razorgrain and Tarberries. BTW Tarberries are only grown at The Slog and they cannot be planted elsewhere. As long as you do not piss off the farmers you can pick their produce with nothing said whether or not the farm is part of an established Settlement.
      You can cook whatever is on the menu at the cooking station provided you have the required ingredients for a particular menu item. You don't really have an option for fresh picked garden produce being cooked. I assume the Settlers are vegans and eat raw garden produce for the most part. They don't hunt or kill and process livestock. Although Diamond City has a butcher shop that sells butchered meat. (to only one player ???) and Bunker Hill only grows about 6 food. I have never noticed any food being grown in Goodneighbor.

    Very interesting. I have been avoiding all packaged food, and all wild foods because I thought the radiation would hurt me. So I've been cooking all my food, but have been having a hell of a time keeping myself replenished. Not quite as bad as water, but close. So, thanks, I'll give raw veggies and fruit a try. (Though I can't bring myself to eat 200 year old Salisbury Steak. Yucko!)

    • @edmartin875
      @edmartin875 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only food I eat is that giving me 2 rads or less, never more than 3. Salisbury steak gives you 7 rads. Don't eat food with a high return of HP and extras until you are no longer hungry. Whatever you eat while hungry give you nothing but does reduce your hunger level.

      Some players play with the sensitivities of their real life instead of thinking of Survival. Especially when it comes to eating bugs, even though many people are alive today because they eat bugs. I saw a video about a place in San Francisco that raised crickets. They killed them, dried them, and ground them up into Cricket flour. Cricket flour was used at many high-end restaurants. But then, that's Californians for you.

    Why were carrots on the "bad" list, they only weigh 0.1 and have 3 rads, the same as corn?

    • @WastelandDovahkiin
      @WastelandDovahkiin  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wasn't saying they were bad. I was just pointing out the five worst ones, compared to the five best ones. But they're still better than most packaged foods. But relative to the other vegetables, they are the worst ones.

    • @wneubert2
      @wneubert2 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But, why do you feel they are the worst? It seemed to me that corn, carrot, and mutfruit were basically the same. Mutfruit has 1 less rad but takes twice as many settlers to grow. I used carrots for food because the corn and mutfriut could be turned into adhesive.
      But you might know something I don't, which is why I'm asking.

    • @WastelandDovahkiin
      @WastelandDovahkiin  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Carrots are actually a lot harder to find, that's why I put them on the "bad" list. Most of the farms don't grow them, so you won't be seeing them as often as mutfruits and corn, unless you plant your own gardens full of them. And I needed a top 5 best and top 5 worst, and there are only 10 vegetables, so I picked carrots to be not as good as corn, for that reason. But just because it's on the "bad" list doesn't mean you shouldn't use them. The lists are there to basically show you which ones are more desirable and/or easiest to find.

    • @wneubert2
      @wneubert2 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok I got it, the bad part is they are harder to find. I did grow them at the settlements, so they were unlimited. I liked them because they were easy to pick and made small plants that didn't take much room. Plus I needed them for orange mentats anyway.

    • @edmartin875
      @edmartin875 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@wneubert2 Mutfruit takes twice as many settlers to grow as corn ? Maybe if you are counting plants instead of food produced. There are 7 types of food that can be grown at all Settlements. Each Settler assigned to be a farmer can produce a max of 6 food. If you wanted your garden to produce 6 of each food type you would need 7 farmers. Mutfruit produces 6 food with 6 plants and 1 farmer. All the other 6 garden plant types can produce 6 food but requires 12 plants to do it, each with 1 farmer. Seven farmers, seven types of produce. Each type of produce producing 6 food. 78 plants producing 42 food.

    • @edmartin875
      @edmartin875 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      To get where you can start healing takes 2 food items per hunger level. Two Wild Mutfruit does the same as 2 Grilled Radstag. I believe it is the number of food items not their value that counts at this point. Once your Hunger is cured, use regular cooked food to regain health just like always. The HP meter will fill slower but the same number of points will be healed. Eating more food WILL NOT fill the meter any faster.

    I like your new survival mode videos. Very well laid out and presented.
    However I'm afraid I think you're wrong when you say that all food will satisfy your character the same amount. I'm pretty sure in the survival mode instructions it states that every item of food will satisfy your hunger according to the value amount (VAL) of each item. Which would unfortunately make your lists invalid.
    But then again I could be mistaken.

      Well, I was thinking the same thing, but I did extensive testing of many different food items, and all of them were the same. I was disappointed to tell the truth. I was hoping some would be better than others. Maybe it's a glitch in my game? I don't know. I just know that in my game all food items satisfy the same amount.

    • @thegoldencow6249

      +Sam Brown No, I'm pretty sure you're right. The information in the video is incorrect. I have eaten a grilled radstag when at the "hungry" level and I would be completely full. At the same "hungry" level I would have to eat 2 baked bloat flies (same with cooked radroach & molerat) to acquire the "peckish" level and 2 more to be sated.
      Foods are not created equal.

    • @WastelandDovahkiin
      @WastelandDovahkiin  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Like I said, the information in my video is from my own in-game testing, and perhaps my game is bugged. But for sure in my game the different foods cured hunger at the same levels. I tested it over and over with all kinds of foods just to be sure, since when I initially discovered it I was disappointed, and wanted to make sure it wasn't a fluke. But maybe it is just an overall fluke in my game. I'm curious if anyone else is experiencing it too.

    If you eat when you're not hungry, does that delay the point at which you get Peckish? It doesn't seem so but I've never done any tests.

      The power poles north and south of Abernathy each have radstags. Dogs and bugs are everywhere. 3 Bramin hang out between the road and railroad northeast of Starlight Drive-in (don't go too far NE or you will find a nest of feral ghouls at Bedford Station). Push come to shove, you can buy food from any vendor.

      A few more Bramin hang out just North of Finch Farm. One Bramin hangs out South of County Crossing. etc, etc.
