i just wanted to say that as a young plant enthusiast, you really inspire me!!! you seem to be such a genuine person, not to mention how AMAZING your plant collection is!!! i love your videos so much!!! ❤️🪴
Thank you, Elizabeth!! 🥹 I loved watching TH-camrs when I first started with plants. It really motivated me to start my own channel. I’m so happy you enjoy them and just thank you for being here ☺️🙏🏼
Haha 😆 I think I got used to it! I took the blinds down since it was a pain moving them up and down and I want my plants to get the best light. Not too many people drive by at night it’s a pretty safe neighborhood 🤗
What a great, relaxing video. It’s 2:30am where I am and it’s pretty much the only quiet time that I get so I tend to stay up late. Not a good habit but it’s peaceful😊
Your voice is so relaxing. I did some plant unboxing ( Hoyas) and repotting my hoya bella outer variegated into pon and a self watering pot. I also love stratum for rooting
I wish that I lived close to you I would literally volunteer my time to help you report just so I could learn from you. 😂 All of your plants look amazing,!!
Thanks again Melissa so creating such a great planty channel 🌱🪴😊 I would have never heard about fluval or even tried it, if it wasn’t for you. 😂 Love watching these kind of videos. Totally love your alocasia collection 🪴 Im slowly growing my Alocasia collection myself. I can’t wait to see them get bigger! I also love your repotting videos too. Happy planting 😊
Wow Your Eppi Marble has taken off!! Finally, it’s so pretty 😍 I picked one up, found it at good price I couldn’t resist. Lol I’ve gotta go back an check out your soil mix video. Thanks for long video. Always love seeing your plants 😍💚💚
Thank you! I’ll make an updated video on the soil sometime here. I wished I waited longer to get a more established one but I’m just happy it’s growing! ☺️
@@plantsbymelissa The one I got is tiny 3 leaf, it will grow! Ooh happy your going to do a new soil video. Hope you do one for Anthuriums too. So many of mine are still in moss, not sure what mix to put them in. Looking forward too that. 💚💚
Hi Melissa, I enjoy watching your chore videos. You definitely keep your fluval more wet than I do, I mix mine with perlite to prevent compaction and use a leca reservoir in lower quarter of vessel. I have had mostly good experience with that set up but you're right about staying on top of moisture levels😉
I love how you just talk about random plant things, like the plant not liking the lights and not paying attention to the roots you couldn’t really see in the clear pots. All these little things are so helpful to those of us still learning! I love your potting mix that you make. I’m having great results with my plants! Were some of your plants not doing well? Im so paranoid about root rot and your mix is perfect! Is that why you switched to the other “no name” brand initially?
In another video she mentioned that she was an over waterer and dealt with root rot at the beginning of her planty journey so that might be the case! :)
She said in a video before the mix she used before (sol soils) was holding on to too much water it looked chunky and airy but all the smaller particles sank down when watered became soggy and rotted the roots out. It's not sold where I am in the uk but I appreciate her telling everyone as that will save other plant lovers from losing plants in their collection which would be upsetting for anyone
I did see the root rot videos but was wondering why she switched to the Sol brand in the first place. She makes her own mix and has really good success with it, so I’m just wondering why she started with the Sol brand.
They reached out to me and I wanted to try it. I was hesitant but I did really like it initially. I'm happy to try and support smaller companies when they do reach out and I was under the impression it was something it wasn't and after using it for awhile on some of my plants I'm finding it retaining too much mositure :( Their whole attitude towards this is definitely a disappointment.
Yes, while that is true like most of us new plant parents, I know how to water my plants after all this time :) It's the soil staying wet for 2 weeks is the issue for most indoor houseplants. They advertised their houseplant mix as something it wasn't and being a newer company they heavily relied on affiliate marketing to get their name out there. They obviously can't take criticism or honest feedback and it's not a company I would every support again.
Interesting... you mentioned the leaves turning down and thinking that could mean it doesn't like the light. I have a few pothos that the leaves are bending in very dramatic ways down so maybe that could be their issue... they are near a grow light as well. (I had to laugh during your video... I was like she did not just say 'sus' and then you said it again hahahaha) Love these videos, so calming and makes me look forward to caring for my own! You're the best for all the work you put into your channel
Thanks for this video Melissa. I’ve started using the thiccly poles with moss and your method is helpful. Thanks for showing us! I also used sol soils and found the same issue with the bottom half of the pot being too wet. My usual mix is 50/50 soil & perlite with some orchid bark.
💓beautiful blooms!!! Love Hoyas!!💓Nice video! Thanks 💓 I started using your soil suggestions to guide my pot mix and it has really helped (I'm a over waterer) hehe💓
Very relaxing night plant chore vid Melissa. As for your Cuprea check out how Jan (Sydney Plant Guy) has tied his MASSIVE Cuprea and it looks stunning!!!
Hi Melissa, wondering how you hang your pots above the window? also when you water where does the overflow go? I didn't see any tray under each plant. I love you fun videos. You're an amazing planty person. n
I’m listening to you on Friday night & I have to say you are so soothing to listen to. My husband & I enjoy your channel. He is more of an outdoor gardener while I’m the inside gardener. You have helped me become a better mom to my indoor plants . I have about 85 now. You’re doing a great job! I am considering of becoming a patreon. How would I do that?
Thank you so much! I'm so glad I have helped and that you enjoy the channel! Patreon is a separate community and you sign up on the website, I can link it here for you. I do an extra video a month and I answer any questions you might have! Thank you 🥹🙏 www.patreon.com/plantsbymelissa
Hi Melissa! Thank you for this long, relaxing video I really enjoyed it so much! Just this morning I discovered that my alocasia Frydek and Black Velvet had a severe case of root rot (90% of the roots were gone) so I'm in the process of re-rooting and rehabing them (I chose leca as substrate)... Wish me luck cause I will definitely need it 😥😥
I wish you showed us more your Albo! I really love those ones! I wish I can tell the difference between the first one you showed and rhe Thai constellation, both seems to have yellow varigations? I'm really new to this so I watch many awesome TH-camrs like you to know what's is best for me! Knowing that moss poles needs watering 2 times a week really makes me not wanted to go with that! With my job, a kid and 4 cats (2 very old too) I can't have this maintenance 😅! I'm not affraid of fluval tho, but the price is scary 😅, I will stick with water and or perlite 😅 for now 😊
It’s mostly the moss that dries quickly that makes them time consuming. My space is really warm too so they dry out quickly. I have an albo care video I did a couple months ago and showed them all more closely ☺️
Omg! I love your content and your claiming voice ❤ Great! Now that’s out of the way. I was trying to find it in your Amazon store and I couldn’t. Where did you get that fabulous black watering can from?
I love your videos but I wanted to add that I had the same issue with the soil that shall not be named 😉 I’m repotting everything as well. Wish I would have waited before ordering it, but I wanted to try it too. It’s way too expensive to be so muddy and dense.
So relaxing ❤ giving me long weekend vibes😊 I feel hanging baskets are bit of hassle to water! take them out , water and let it drain through and hang it again Just curious, I noticed you watered your string of plants and couple of hoyas hanging in your south window simply... I guess you had the drain plug on. How do you ensure they're thoroughly watered and no water is sitting in the bottom of the pot. Please let me know I'll learn that too❤
Well, some of them are in sols 🫠 so now I’m scared to water them lol. I water them thoroughly some waterings but not always. I usually just guess on the water and they seem happy with that.
Hiiii Melissa! I need tips for transitioning my frydek corms out of moss and into soil. I’ve never had an alocasia before 😂 I got this one over the winter very cheap because it was dying, so I decided to chance it and I got 4 really healthy corms out of it. All 4 have 2 leaves now and their roots are looking really strong, they’re in sphagnum moss with leca at the bottom, in clear plastic cups! I’m so anxious to move them please send help 😥😵💫
Your probably tired of hearing me say how beautiful your plants are, but I don’t know what else to say! You have such a nice big back yard, you should ask your hubby if he’ll build you a green house, you could do it right off your patio somehow, oh that would be so pretty. 😊
Thank you so much! I love caring for them although some days it can be a lot but they make me happy watching them grow 🥹 one day! I think I would love to have a greenhouse back there somewhere 🥰
most philos have extrafloral nectaries! It's very normal :) They secrete a sap and in nature it attracts ants that will eat pests on them. Some are more sappy than others haha. It doesn't always mean a pest issue but it's always a good idea to check. Spider mites love my philos
I think I filmed it almost 2 weeks ago now :) the roots took a little while to use up the water. I definitely could have watered it a few days sooner but I’m so happy to see it doing well 🥹

I pierce the water bottle lid 4 times and that seems to give a nice drip rate. I re-water just before it gets crunchy (so dry-ish but not completely). But I guess as you fertilise just the pot with your slow release you need to water the pot too. I use a liquid fertiliser when I water so my pole roots get fed with watering and my pot roots with what drips through the pole.

So with flugal do you get water roots?
They're different and there's more air circulating as it dries some so they're easier transitioning to soil than just using water :)
What beneficials do you use? Don't they die if you don't have pests for them to consume?
They eventually die off yes but they do a good thing. I’ve seen mites on my plants for a couple months after releasing them even. I get mine from natures good guys. I like the cucumeris mites!
56:02 It’s in what substrate?
I had one alocasia bambino and didn’t know much about it and lost it pretty quick, now they scare me!
Does the sun shine on the hanging plants in the window?
Yes! They get direct sun! It depends on the day we get a rainy season here it should be starting next month I think so it lasts for awhile and lots of cloudy rainy days 😵💫
Which ficus did you get? I couldn’t tell. Is it a shiverana?
Yes! That one :) such a baby though so hoping it does okay!
What kind of water do you use?
Rainwater!
Can you reuse your frugal?😊
I try to save what I can. I dump used stratum into a container and let it dry or I’ll just add new corms into existing containers I’ve used and sometimes I mix a little old and new together ☺️
All my poles are thiccly poles and I use Yan’s- (Sydneyplantguy) upside down water bottle technique and never need to water the pot.
