So glad that Luna is feeling better!😊 Melissa if you’ve got so much repotting to do and most everyone likes repotting videos just do it. Hang in there. I feel like the change in season could be a factor in some plant issues. You have a whole growing season ahead. Thank you Kelly! I definitely need to hear that! I did some the other night off camera and it was so nice to get a few more checked off the list. I fill to the top yes! Mine dries pretty quickly too usually am topping them off every 4-5 days.

My alocasia used to do very bad but now that I have switched to PON they have done a lot better. I know you haven't tried it before but I think you should do an experiment and try it on one of them and see how it goes and maybe you'll end up converting I find that it really helps and you can use your slow release fertilizer with it as well!!😄🪴
That's so funny! I actually bought some on amazon a couple hours ago LOL. I'm going to try growing some of my smaller ones in it to see how it goes. I've been wanting to try it!
I switched so many plants to pon a few months ago and have actually had way more spider mite issues ever since 🙁 even on things I’ve only ever had pests like thrips with such as some pothos varieties I switched into pon. Huge bummer and I’m working on getting them switched into leca. I find my alocasias do super well in leca. I got swept up in the concept that pon is supposedly better at reducing pests but I’ve not seen it do that at all and in some cases even made it worse 🤷♀️
Thank you so much for putting out great videos. Even though you feel like you're in the thick of it at the moment, your content is always so refreshing and enjoyable to watch. We all have these months of plant issues one after another sometimes. I have so many plants that I've had to grow back roots, ones I'm too scared to even repot now! I keep all my plants in 80%+ humidity, and I still struggle keeping spidermites at bay. It's a never ending process, and if the perfect plant parent did exist, you would be it in my eyes. LOVE YOU x
I never tire of seeing your plants, it’s analogous to a music lover attending a concert by a favorite band. In my case the favorite band is Renaissance whom I have been listening to for 50 years. Melissa, you are doing so amazing!! You have the most stunning collection, and it’s okay to have some sad plants every once and a while, you’re still such an amazing plant mom and gifted at what you do!! 🤍
So glad your kitty is doing better. Don’t be discouraged about plant pests. We all get them. I’m going from plant room to the bathroom and spraying everyone down and yes I’m using sulfur. No damage in the 6th months I’ve been using it.
I have a neon on a pole. My suggestion is to move it in front of the mother grow light. Trust me, don’t give up on it. The leaves are so stunning when then finally take. It’ll catch up!!
I once purchased a Frydek for a great price! It was beautiful and I took all the precautions to prevent pests. Within two to three weeks it developed spider mites. Not one of my other plants had any issues with pests. I immediately gave it to a friend to rehab. Since then, I've never owned another alocasia. I feel like spider mites are in it's DNA. Hopefully, your plants heal up and I'm glad Luna feels better!
Thank you Maggie! I was so lucky there for the longest time with my alocasia and not getting spider mites. I blame all my philodendron bringing them in. Sorry to hear that happened to yours and thank you so much about luna!
I def don’t think the cuprea tanked from wiping it with a microfiber. That shouldn’t affect those thick, waxy leaves in that way. Usually it’s only velvety plants or super delicate ones. So sorry you are going through this girl. Thanks for the great videos and honest feedback.
I’m also so glad to see Luna getting better! We had a problem with our fur baby not that long ago. We have brother and sister kitties. We noticed our boy messing around in the litter box for long periods of time one day and then all of a sudden got super lethargic and couldn’t walk or stand over a two day period. His whole body was so swollen and his breathing was super slow and when we’d stand him up, he’d literally fall right back down. So we took him in to our vet which is luckily also an ER vet. He ended up having a uti that spread to his kidneys and liver, if we’d have waited another 6 hours he would haven’t have made it. Apparently it’s very common in male cats to have urinary issues and most of the time, you won’t know until it’s too late. If I wouldn’t be home with them every day, we wouldn’t have noticed in time. He’s finally back to his usual self and it’s so heartwarming ❤
oh no I'm so so sorry that happened 😩 I'm glad you were home and he is back to his usual self! That must have been so scary 😭 We had a couple cats before these 3 and one of them passed at only 7 years with a kidney issue. He had a blockage and didn't notice it right away. He seems off and was hiding in a corner so we took him into the vet right away and they were able to remove the blockage but his kidneys couldn't recover after a few days. I didn't realize male cats had urinary issues but now I am a lot more cautious with Chai. Yeah, I'm not sure what happened with the cuprea. It's okay one day and not the next. So very strange!
I'm so sorry you're so stressed about your plants but summer is coming and hopefully the growth will improve. You have so many plants that it's likely overwhelming when things go wrong. I have mealy bugs on a few Hoyas and that in itself is stressful. Have you thought of selling a few plants just to get your plant numbers a bit more manageable? Your collection is stunning though ❤️
Thank you! I definitely need to downsize a bit and have a more manageable collection. I tend to overcare sometimes and it creates more work for me. I think just having more space will help too so I want to take more plants out of this room.
I know it can be frustrating, but would the journey be interesting if it was all sunshine and rainbows? The struggle will make you a much better cultivator. This could be a great baseline on the effectiveness of the various beneficial bugs. Maybe do zones with different ones and see what really works. You mention them working/not working. Perhaps make that more formal/scientific.
Hey melissa, im struggling with my monstera adansonii :/ it keeps dying on me so much lol its not on a poss pole yet, and im planning on putting it on one. I put it in my ikea cabinet and it did not enjoy it, its currently at 60% humidity. I dont know what im doing wrong, that plant doesnt seem to love me :(
I find them to be a little picky! they like a consistent watering routine so they don't like to go too dry or sit too wet. Mine has always stressed very easily. 60% humidity is a great level. If the root health is okay, I would check for pests and make sure it can get some good light and hopefully, it will bounce back :)
Eventually, yes! Stratum becomes sorta mush so it breaks down overtime. I think you can get away with plants in it for a little while like 6 months or so but not a long term growing substrate.
@@plantsbymelissa oh okay because I am trying it for the first time and I don't know really what to expect. Thank You so much for getting back to me, there's been a lot of people who do videos and things but don't answer any questions or comments
They’re from target last season 2022. No longer available :( sulfur is very harsh and some of my plants didn’t do well with it. It’s also very harmful if inhaled and even using it indoors with a mask can be dangerous.
I repotted w a new soil and had issues (unexplained withering and yellowing) and took the 'hoya flatmite' microscope to my clear pots and glass vessels, looked at the soil and saw wriggling worms--nematodes! Horrific. After that I bake all my substrates, soil, coco coir, moss, tree fern fiber, all of it except for fluval when they come into the house. It's a *giant* pain but I make a day of it and have a huge batch of everything I use that's been cooked=peace of mind. I use systemic and mosquito bits too, the worms apparently didn't care 😃
Aw nematodes are good I’m about to order some to water in all my plants. I used them last summer when I had thrips. They’ll hunt down and eat the insect larvae in the soil and a great alternative to pesticides but definitely do whatever brings you peace of mind. That’s most important 🫶🏻
@@music-ye6yvsome Nematodes are beneficial but there’s also plenty that cause problems. Baking things like pure coco substrate is something I do as well, or I hydrate my large coco husk chunks in boiling water and cover to steam for awhile. I have seen some compelling research, though, when it comes to any organic materials that it can cause any nitrogen to become toxic. The channel gardening in Canada is run by a soil scientist and she has lots of super helpful and extremely informative research on everything from heating/sterilizing soil to houseplant growing conditions along with lots of outdoor gardening videos. I consider myself quite the plant nerd and I’ve learned SO much from her scientist perspective.
@@charlottecobain6986 ahh amazing stuff, off to nerd out to all of her videos. and to obsess over whether or not all of this $$$ tree fern is now toxic 😵💫
@@music-ye6yv What temp did you bake it at and for how long? Did you add water in? Don’t freak out too much, it’s probably fine 🤗 I think the concern really comes in when you’ve got anything like worm castings or something with high levels of nitrogen breaking down with heat. Clean tree fern fiber likely wouldn’t have that in it 🤗 Stuff like soil mixes (ie: ocean forest is super popular but has lots of organic byproducts that might cause a problem if heated) are of more concern but you should be good with the moss, coco, and tree fern.
Your Lemon 🍋 lime is so beautiful in your bathroom..about how much humidity does it get in there...i live in a low humidity ara..semiarid..i believe that is why mine does not thrive... ..
I have some clear 8 inch and 10 inch on my amazon! I can link them here for you :) www.amazon.com/shop/plantsbymelissa/list/2Q7LRSOZIGHH7?ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d
How much water do you keep in the stratum. I filled mine full to the top of the cup. Should I let it dry out a bit to the bottom of the stick? Does the water wick up to the top if it’s below stick level? Thanks for any advice.
I've almost entirely given up on alocasia...they are just too finicky overall(except for my regal shield!). I've grown over 200 plants successfully and they are ones I get so frustrated by 😕
@@plantsbymelissa I just transferred most of mine to PON along with all my prayer plants. The Alocasia haven’t flinched. A couple of the prayer plants aren’t happy but fingers crossed.
They're too expensive and I'm not that impressed with them. They asked me to make a whole video dedicated about their lights for absolutely free which makes me not want to support companies that like.
I bought some sol soil recently and put some baby plants in it too and they're struggling a little too. I don't think the soil is bad - but rather the soil takes a bit of a learning curve to understand how often to water. Hopefully your plants do better soon!!!
a lot of my plants have been in it for awhile now since last summer. There's bound to be watering inconsistencies it's just normal to happen with all of us but I think I'm most upset by the fact that they pushed it as a chunky aerated mix which it isn't at all. I never would have used or promoted it if I knew it stayed moist for 2 weeks.

Yay Luna!!!!!!!!! 🖤🌙

Yes, you are right 🫶 oh interesting! I like this idea! I need to move all my philos closer together so the spider mites will be more contained lol
My marble queen is as huge as youts😊❤
If I may ask what are those white bags you hang on the leaves of your plants?
Yay! 🫶🏻 they’re beneficial mites (cucumeris)
I e heard only one of the good bugs works on spider mights. You can double up and use both kinds of good bugs at once.
I need to check to make sure certain predatory mites are compatible with each other haha but I know of a couple other kinds I want to try.
👋 HI, Sorry to hear about root rot. Maybe a little more air circulation would help. 🤔
I have a question. The corms you have growing in flugal stratum, can you just let them continue to grow in flagal or do you have to transfer to soil?
Eventually, yes! Stratum becomes sorta mush so it breaks down overtime. I think you can get away with plants in it for a little while like 6 months or so but not a long term growing substrate.
@@plantsbymelissa oh okay because I am trying it for the first time and I don't know really what to expect. Thank You so much for getting back to me, there's been a lot of people who do videos and things but don't answer any questions or comments
Where didyou het all those shallow hanging pots? ..so 😍 cute.
Why do you NOT recommend sulfur?
The majority of your plants are so 🙀 👏 amazing...sometimes 🪴 go downhill for no apparent reason..and your alocasias were so beautiful 😍..
@@plantsbymelissa no way, I didn't know that! Thanks so much for the info!
@@music-ye6yvsome
Nematodes are beneficial but there’s also plenty that cause problems.

I have a round cactus that has some white on it’s flesh idk what’s wrong with it. I didn’t think of fungus until u mentioned it. I wonder if that’s it
it's possible! I bought a spray fungicide so hoping it works better than what I was using before.
@@plantsbymelissa oh I need one fornsure
ENJ💚YED Y💚UR MAY 2💚23 H💚USEPLANT UPDATES!!!
Your Lemon 🍋 lime is so beautiful in your bathroom..about how much humidity does it get in there...i live in a low humidity ara..semiarid..i believe that is why mine does not thrive...
..
it's usually always above 50% in my house and some days it can get 70% with the weather outside!
Do you have many going in your plant room? That might help with fungal issues. Just a thought.
Do I have many what? I'm not sure what you mean!
Where do you get the big clear pots? I’ve been looking for 8inch or bigger
I'm not sure what you mean by a stick? Usually if I see the water level get too low at 1/4 I refill. Keeping it moist is great!
@@plantsbymelissa what I meant by stick was a cutting and some root rot situation.
💚💚💚💚
Your tineke is beautiful
I've almost entirely given up on alocasia...they are just too finicky overall(except for my regal shield!). I've grown over 200 plants successfully and they are ones I get so frustrated by 😕
I honestly don't know what happened 😩 I'm going to try growing a couple in pon I think and see how it goes. I hear they love it!
@@plantsbymelissa I just transferred most of mine to PON along with all my prayer plants. The Alocasia haven’t flinched. A couple of the prayer plants aren’t happy but fingers crossed.
Maybe you need another mother light?
@@plantsbymelissa same. I think I’m gonna switch back to my own mix as well. I’m glad I’m not the only one!
How tall is your moss pole ?
which one lol
@@plantsbymelissa well in general I guess lol
It could be your carpet because it holds a lot of bacteria we don’t know about
Maybe the azamax was too strong?
I'm not sure 😫 it was the same bottle I used and mixed up already
Happy to see Luna is feeling better, running an playing. 🫶🏼 Always enjoying seeing your amazing collection. Sorry things haven’t completely sorted out since the soil thing, but it will. 💚💚💚
Thank you sherry 🤗
Love the updates!! Plants are a bit stressful the more you have obviously but when we have money and time into them. One leaf at a time right?! 🪴 I was surprised when I saw the ficus… cutie
Yes, exactly! I just need to take some time to focus on getting the rest repotted. I actually told myself one plant at a time a little while ago lol.
