Breathlessness not always a sign of illness

  • Is breathlessness always a symptom of a health problem or disease? Not all the time. Many people, especially those who are younger may not realize just how quickly our bodies can become deconditioned - this means that the muscle mass and strength will adapt to our current circumstances. Not moving as much, having a desk job, driving everywhere and many other sedentary behaviors may lead to a surprisingly quick deconditioning. Then, when you try to become physically active again, you may feel it very difficult.
However, breathlessness can indeed be a symptom of a medical problem. This is not to be ignored. If it persists, it's not related to lifestyle changes, or your shortness of breath is worse than that of a person you know of a similar age and ability, you may want to check with your doctor whether there is anything else going on.
Breathlessness can occur when people have anemia, various lung and heart conditions, or can even be a sign of a more serious medical problem that needs to be treated quickly. Please always check with your doctor if you are worried about your health. It is better to go for a check earlier rather than later.

I’m 72. I jog for 3km and swim for 30 mins most days. My BMI is 22. However, if I work in the garden and bend forwards I get shortness of breath, feel dizzy and sit down, breathe deeply to recover my breath. I’m waiting for ecg and blood results. I hope my symptoms are not a sign of something serious.

Thank you for taking the time to answer this persons questions in detail and prove that not only you are reading the questions being asked of you, but taking the time to appreciate all potential points of view/situations a person may be going through.
My question is: During a recent Spirometry test i was explaining my in-ability to use my inhaler properly and that i had gotten a volumatic spacer, but was still experiencing difficulties taking my fostair pink inhaler correctly it was explained to me what i was describing in my difficulty to use my inhaler correctly was called a "glottal response" (the flap at the back of my throat activates and my body attempts to swallow the inhaled air into my stomach causing me to burp rather then breathe it in), could you please extrapolate on what a glottal response is in more detail and explain how best to avoid it?

Hi I’ve been on Symbicort for many years, around 15 years, I’ve always felt heart palpitations when on it, bad back, dizziness when standing up, feeling on edge, sore throat even with washing my mouth out, hoarseness voice in the morning with increase mucus in my throat, since end of last year my heart beats have got worse, and I had a shortness of breath for months! I’ve also got numbness in my hands, a bloated stomach and been struggling to swallow. I’ve had loads of blood test done all came back fine, I’ve taken out food from my diet and I’ve taken away certain products like mouthwash and certain shampoos etc, the doctor thinks it’s acid reflux which I’ve been taking tablets for a month, the only think I haven’t taken is my Symbicort inhaler! I’ve heard it can cause inflammation in the body as well and I’ve had 2 separate test done which indicates I have some inflammation in the body.
