    You should check out this entire concert Elvis from Hawaii from 1972. It was the early days of satellite TV and very few channels on TV. Over 1 BILLION a people saw this concert live. It was shit from the University of Hawaii’s football stadium. This was Elvis at his peak before his health declined. This was Elvis as many of us remember him.

    Elvis is a bonafide American and world wide performance icon, he grew up singing gospel and I think that is at the heart of why many of his song have so much soul - not to mention that regal voice that sounds like the roar of a mighty lion when he pours it on.

    Hi ! An American Trilogy is a medley of 3 songs/anthems from the American folklore : “Dixie” / “Battle Hymne of the Republic” & “All my trials”. The reason why Elvis is staring at the flutist during his solo is because the guy made a wrong note during the dress rehearsal 2 days before ( also filmed with a public in case something was to go wrong with the world live broadcast ); you can feel the weight of Elvis’ stare on the guy’s face !
    Hope that can help!

    Really great reaction. This is not really a gospel song, it is based on the battle hymn of the republic a civil war anthem. He was amazing, incredible entertainer, no flashy choreography just pure feeling in the moment. He will be remembered forever. BTW not a tin whistle, it is a flute, Thanks nice reaction.

    I think you truly understand why so many of us loved seeing Elvis and listening to his music. I saw him in concert several times, and his performances were amazingHis voice was so incredible. When I was fortunate enough to be invited into Graceland, his uncle Vester treated me like a family member. Elvis father wrote me after my visit, and thanked me for a gift and caring about his health. It surprised me that Mr. Presley took time to do that. That were all a very nice and caring family. Thanks for the great job you are doing, Michael. Michael Sellers in Virginia

    In April of 1977, my late wife and I seen Elvis at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Elvis was an remarkable performer, and his voice never left him his entire life. Since his recordings in 1954 to 1977, he was the most humble human being on this planet! He never forgot where he came from, and his humility and generosity will always remain with us, and his memory will never die. May present and future entertainers take note of his kindness, humility and generosity, and be an example to us all. May we cherish the music he left us, and his memory live forever. Elvis, may you rest in peace my friend, and thank you for serving our country. ^ 5

    Dixie is a term used to describe all of or a portion of the Southern US states. The song Dixie sung here was the unofficial anthem of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. Battle Hymn of The Republic (Glory Glory Hallelujah- 2nd song) was a rallying cry song for the Union (northern) states during the Civil War and, finally, All My Trials was a social protest song of the late 50s and 60s sung by folk singer Joan Baez and was primarily focused on civil rights for African Americans during those turbulent times which I remember all too well. A Trilogy is a compilation of three, usually in reference to songs or stories.
    PS: That was a flute and the “beads” were scarves and Hawaiian leis, or floral garlands.

    • @stevedahlberg8680
      @stevedahlberg8680 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And I would further add that All My Trials (my favorite version of it is Joan Baez's), before it got picked up as a protest song in the folk movement, was originally from the Caribbean, I want to say the Bahamas, but it was basically a slave song that made its way over here long ago. That's what I love about this American Trilogy is that we have a song of the South, a song of the North, and a slave song. What a balanced treatment and of course sung and played so beautifully.

    • @Paladin70
      @Paladin70 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@stevedahlberg8680 Yeah it’s also known as Bahamian lullaby from around mid-fifties I believe. I agree that Joan’s is still the best, although I’ve seen some really good covers on Some of the singing competition shows over the years.

    I think Elvis always did a gospel song in every performance. At least he did in the ones I saw. I watched this on live TV as it happened, went to a couple of concerts, and saw him in Vegas. The way Elvis could sing softly like an angel and then switch to pure power was amazing.

    A song of the South, a song of the North, and a Slave spiritual. What a balanced treatment and just so masterfully sung and played. And yes I got the goosebumps, especially on that long hard stare!
    If you haven't done his Simon and Garfunkel Cover Bridge Over Troubled Water yet, he does it live in Vegas I think in 1970 and it's usually the first result. And in fact I think the very first result says better sound. But it's not substantially any different than any other version of it. Anyway, it will blow you away. It's just so masterful. And when Paul Simon heard Elvis perform it at Madison Square Garden in New York city, he more or less through his hands up and said, Well, it's Elvis's song now!

    Elvis injected the Holy Spirit into my veins with this performance.
    "American Trilogy" is a combination of 3 songs depicting 3 different points of view of the Civil War: 1. Dixieland (The South), 2. All My Trials (the Slaves) 3. Battle Hymn of the Republic (the Union). If you want to see another performance where Elvis hands off I recommend "Why Me Lord?" (hands off to JD Sumner) -1974 Memphis and "Just Can't Help Believing" (hands off to his backups, the Sweet Inspirations)1970 Vegas.

    Elvis is best known for some of his rock and roll hits of course, but his first love was gospel and some of his gospel performances REALLY show off his range way more than his rock songs. Check out his version of Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art, or Peace In the Valley. His version of Swing Down, Sweet Chariot is really great as well.

    Trivia re: the Hawaii ramp: Producer/director Marty Pasetta told Parker he wanted to build a ramp for Elvis to walk out onto & Parker said no. Pasetta explained that it would be 8 ft. wide & Elvis could stay in the middle or go to the left or to the right if he wanted to (Pasetta knew how important the audience was to Elvis). Parker said no. Fortunately, Pasetta was able to meet w-Elvis & he explained exactly what he told Parker. Fortunately again, Elvis overrode Parker & told Pasetta to build the ramp. Paseta told Elvis he wanted him to lose 25 lbs., which Elvis did. Elvis then hugged Pasetta & said you are one of the few people who has been totally honest w-me. Imagine how different that concert would have been if Elvis didn't have the option to get in close contact w-his audience. HE would have been just as spectacular, but without the ramp the concert would have had a very different feel. Thank you for your appreciation of our Man. And thank you for your good timing of comments which does not come on top of his singing.

    My mom was pregnant with me when my Papa (the milkman in Shreveport LA) delivered milk one morning to an 18-ish yr old Elvis and his parents that were renting a small house in town while Elvis was playing the Louisiana Hayride. Elvis was as genuine of a person and humble soul as you can imagine. His biggest influences were deep south, poor black folk, rock, rhythm, and blues. They were very poor. Elvis had a spark that couldn't be denied, and he was doggedly determined to take care of his mama, yes, he was a mama's boy, but show me a man that isn't if his mom was worth her salt. Elvis will live on due to his unique individualism and ability to appeal across all genre's. He's not called "The King" for no reason.

    American Trilogy is about the 2 sides of the Civil War. "Dixie" is of course the (unofficial) anthem of the confederate states. "Battle hymn of the Republic" represents the Northern side. "All my trials" represents the tragedy, waste, and death the war caused. Kind of an Ant-War song if you will. I've always loved Elvis rendition of it. Gives me Goosebumps.

    The song is a trio of songs about the civil war. It was one of his very few political statements. The story goes that Priscilla and a friend were out shopping and Priscilla heard the song on the radio, sung by the writer, a dude named Micky Newberry. She came home and told him all about it. He checked it out and decided to do it. Strangely enough, many critics sneered at him singing Battle Hymn of the Republic (the Glory Hallelujah part of the song.) History has proved that those critics were full of excrement. The song is an awesome performance and a perfect statement of where Elvis stood in relation to his status as a southerner.

    One of my favorite Elvis songs is Tomorrow Is A Long Time. It was written by Bob Dylan, and there's no live performance that I've found, but it is absolutely beautiful! It's all the 'smoothness' of Elvis!

  • @eapdap

    This is called "American Trilogy" because it's comprised of 3 songs... the 1st is "Dixie" (the song of the south from the civil war era), the 2nd is "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", (the song of the north, again from civil war time), and 3rd called "All My Trials"... it's kind of a melding of them all and it's just incredible!!

    Dixie Land refers to the American South. American Trilogy is a trio of songs from the Civil War era. First is "Dixie" which was considered the anthem of the South, then "Battle Hymn of the Republic" which was considered the anthem of the North, and "All My Trials" which was a Negro spiritual.

    I live about an hour from Memphis. When Elvis was first making movies, my mom and her sisters borrowed their dad’s car to go to the “ library “. They actually went into town to see an Elvis movie. They weren’t allowed to watch Elvis because of the way he would dance. It wasn’t decent. They got in so much trouble. She said it was definitely worth it. All the girls were just crazy about him. We live in NE Arkansas. Elvis played and sang at gymnasiums and sock hops in this area all the time in the early part of his career. Every time these girls went to a dance, it had to be in the back of their minds that this could be the day they would meet Elvis. Lol! I like all of his songs. I will say that “You Gave Me a Mountain “ has me wondering how on earth he does it. Amazing.

    The 1st portion of the song is from “Dixie”, a folk song about the Southern US. Written a few years before the US Civil War and adopted by the Confederacy in the US Civil War. Written by a NORTHERNER from Ohio.
    The 2nd portion is from “Battle Hymn of the Republic”. It was specifically created as a marching hymn of the Union Army in the US Civil War. Written by Julia Ward Howe who was also responsible for the creation of Mother’s Day.
    The 3rd portion of the song is from “All My Trials”. It’s a lullaby from the Bahamas written in the 1950s.

    The land of cotton refers to the South. The Glory glory hallelujah is the Battle Hymn of the Republic (that was the Battle hymn for the North during the Civil War between the North and South. Elvis is the greatest singer, best looking, spiritual, generous person ever.
    Take a listen to him sing In The Ghetto written by Mac Davis. A story that was true when Davis wrote it in 1969 and still true today. Elvis' Manager, Col. Parker, did not want him to record it because it was too controversial, but Elvis did it anyway a great song. Long Live The King ❤❤❤❤❤
