Wow! Those three stunning voices and when the choir joins them at the end! I'm glad I wasn't in the audience. I wouldn't have survived it !!

I can't help but cry from the sheer emotion of this every time I hear it.
The PBS broadcast of "Flicka and Friends" was something that needs to be rebroadcast again -- and again.

I remember in the early 90's attending a '3 Divos' Concert in San Francisco at the height of the 3 Tenors.... Hadley, Hampson, Ramey.
I bought the EMI "Show Boat" recording when it first came out and couldn't stop playing it.
Of course today no white man will be allowed to sing Ol' Man River.

The Hadley story is heart-breaking. Here is sings musical theater as if he were born to it. Elsewhere famed tenor roles in popular opera. He seems quintessentially American to me. Perhaps, a Billy Bigalow, a barker for a carousel. I miss his voice and persona dearly.

"You and me me we sweat and strain, body all aching and wracked with pain".
Why if the working conditions were not to your liking didn't you just quit or file a grievance with the union.?
The stevedores were not slaves at this time. They were highly paid unionized positions in great demand. All the black slavery business was added to appeal to the New York theater audience. It's bunk.

This is hilarious. This is a song, not a recording of fact! But i like your comment all the same.

    • @robertcentobene4375
      @robertcentobene4375 3 ปีที่แล้ว

What you see is Samuel Ramey's anger as he approaches the climax. Humility is absent, which makes this song truly great! It is why his interpretation of this whole song (if you listen to it here on You Tube) is not as effective as others who sing this song!

      @@robertcentobene4375
The problem that the blacks had at this time wasn't slavery. The slaves were freed in 1865 with the Emancipation Proclamation. The novel starts about twenty years later and the former slaves celebrated Emancipation Day annually. The South was in Reconstruction. There were two groups who were in opposition in this time period as they had been since the early seventeenth century - the African slaves and the Irish poor indentured servants The Irish were of course Roman Catholics hated more than the blacks and maybe treated worse. Black slaves lasted longer in the fields - possibly because of partial immunity to malaria. Black slaves were not risked on the dangerous jobs. Black slaves were too valuable. The hated Papist Irish were given the dangerous tasks. This doesn't seem to be controversial. Many accounts say as much.
Both groups fought for the post bellum jobs and the Irish won. The real Joe would have been excluded from the relatively easy and good paying stevedore jobs. The whole thrust of the scene and the song is backwards. Racial propaganda that played well on Broadway.

@@Agorante I reiterate; what you are overlooking is a fact that as a song it comes over better when just listening to the audience response to your singing. A black man that sings this song has to put himself in the shoes of a black man prior to 1970. The Klu Klux Klan, the slow and gradual improvement of prejudices was not seen for a long time causing blacks living at the time of Showboat to live in fear constantly.
You have to read through the vocal lines of this song to find the content that proves that that black man was addressing something he wanted to be, like 'Old Man River' a form of supreme Divine Love that enables one to always focus on the higher values of spirituality. You simply cannot compare Ramey with someone that sings this song in total humility. You can always tell from the audience response whether this is true. Check any Proms that features a black man singing this song. The audience response brings the house down!
You in your greater wisdom, go ahead and blot this message out again. I could care less now about any ignorance of this.

American opera singers match this 'normal' singing. I think it is speaking with music. Question: why it is mostly embarassing, when european opera singers try to do...
