The best ever! Every note clear and distinct, every word completely understandable, and the power! What a gigantic thrill it must be to sing such glorious music so perfectly.
One of the most gut-wrenchingly powerful performances I have seen and heard. The magnificent voice of Samuel Ramey and the impassioned performance of the orchestra under the skilled baton of Maestro Levine (particularly the solo trumpeter) make for an outstanding listening experience.
The blessed saint gives humanity a challenge to believe, with words of hope, words to awaken faith, and words to live by. Beautiful performance. Thanks for uploading.
The joy on the conductors face, the iron discipline of the trumpet player, these alone make this an amazing audio - visual feast. But..... add that voice, and truly , I have no words.
Amen!!! When the said said trumpet shall sound... and the Lord Jesus shall descend with a shout, with the archangel and the Trump of God, I pray I shall be counted worthy to partake of the first resurrection...and to reign with him forever. Oh what a glorious day it shall be when the dead shall be raised. What an awesome God! So wonderful!!! I am greatly encouraged. Hallelujah!
Amen!!! When the said said trumpet shall sound... and the Lord Jesus shall descend with a shout, with the archangel and the Trump of God, I pray I shall be counted worthy to partake of the first resurrection...and to reign with him forever. Hallelujah!
He walks on, sings it perfectly and with the most beautiful operatic voice I, personally, have ever heard either in person or on recordings (and I've heard thousands, thankfully Mr. Ramey in person at the MET many times), walks off!!!!!! Whoo Hoo!!!! Bravissimo!!!!!!!!
In my youth in the 1940s l heard the English bass Owen Brannigan singing this wonderful aria at the annual "Messiah" in the Usher Hall in Edinburgh on the "New Year " concert. My person bass hero was Boris Christov but l must admit Samuel Ramey performs to perfection in this superb video. Many thanks to "You Tube" for allowing me to hear this masterful performance and making an old Opera Buff very happy.!!!!!!
L'ensemble est très daté, mais la performance de Ramey est extraordinaire par la qualité de l'engagement. La voix, bien sûr, mais aussi l'émission, la projection, le "port" du corps, le regard rempli du sens des paroles. Bravo ! Et aussi quelle merveille dans la "Messe en si" de Bach avec St Martin in the Fields. Un très grand chanteur, authentique.
Oh MY! Fabulous! I don't know whether I like Samuel's sublime voice better, or the trumpets'. Both together in my favorite part of Messiah leave me speechless.
I will never forget his singing of Caesar in the Handel "Giulio Cesare" at the Met. Such a magnificent artist who's talent and gifts are beyond any other we have heard.
I have yet to hear a more superb basso sound. Ramey is the master. Thank God that I have been able to listen to him through the years, it's been a blessing.
And Glenn Miller makes Hines sound like a school boy -- its not a contest of who has the darkest, lowest voice (Ramey's range was actually lower than Hines, anyway). Hines was fantastic, and Ramey is fantastic -- they have different voices.
"Behold, I show you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed." I remember that this verse was on the nursery door in my old church. Cute. Thanks for sharing this clip. I'm always pleased to find a display of Ramey's magnificent voice.
Great voice, poor guy Samuel! Always overpowered! Forced by Jimmy Levine singing Handel! Look at Philippe Sly! Perfect stylistic balance with natural trumpet and orchestra , great timbre, not only voice! Fine attentive text execution!
Great performance! Ramey sounds fantastic, a beautiful, robust, bass soloist. And the trumpet soloist, Phillip Smith (principal trumpet with the New York Philharmonic) is as good as they get, and plays equally beautifully here. Ramey and Smith are such excellent musicians that they are able to compliment each other so well in this performance, bringing their parts out more where appropriate, and falling more into the background where that is called for (nice dynamic contrasts and phrasing) and they always achieve perfect balance, with both parts clearly heard throughout the piece.
In case anyone's wondering, this was May 5th 1991 for the Carnegie Hall Centennial Festival Gala. "In next Sunday's gala concerts, the New York Philharmonic will be conducted by Mr. (Zubin) Mehta and Mr. (James) Levine. Featured artists include Leontyne Price, Jessye Norman, Marilyn Horne, Plácido Domingo, Samuel Ramey, Mr. (Isaac) Stern, Midori, Pinchas Zukerman, Mr. (Yo-Yo) Ma, Mstislav Rostropovich and Alfred Brendel. In addition, Robert Shaw conducts a morning program featuring New York-area choruses." New York Times, April 28, 1991 WHAT A LINEUP!!!!!!
@ Jann Orfi: Thanks so much for the info. I'm always pleased to read any comment that makes a positive contribution. Yes, indeed! The lineup was superb, as was Mr. Ramey in this solo.
The best ever! This is my most favorite song in Messiah. No other singer has sung this song so magnificently. Samuel Ramey is a great bass singer in history.
Happy holidays everyone. I'm celebrating by watching several hours of this video. The mingling of the powerful bass voice with the sweet high sounds of the trumpet is truly amazing. I am blessed to hear such beauty.
This is so beautiful! Yet is the first recording I've ever seen of Ramey breaking his voice!!! :O but putting that aside, it's a remarkable work indeed!! Ramey will always be one of my top role models! B)
I used to be a pretty good classical baritone. And I had a great voice teacher. He had studied with Oren Brown. He kept telling me that I had to get deeper into this text. One day, he asked me whether I was A Christian. I am now. But I was then an agnostic. And he told me "You can be any agnostic you wanna be, but when you sing this, you have to be a Christian, damn your ass!"
I first heard Mr Ramey on a CD of Brahms German Requiem with Margaret Price as the female soloist. What magnificent music. I have been a fan of his ever cince. Unfortunately Ms. Price is no longer with us.
This beautiful trumpet work with a difficult passage on a difficult instrument. The Bass I have been a fan of for a very long time. I like his Baron Scarpia in Tosca.
Makes me feel the way I did when I was an Episcopalian---grand and glorious music. This was Kansan Samuel Ramey and a Tom Wills look-alike on the trumpet.
In a heavy performance, that is using operatic talelnts, orchestra and conductor who is accostomed to opera, I can only say that the finality of said performances must be to show talents to touch the ears. However, with lighter, sensitive voices, orchestra, chorus and conductor, I think the finality is to touch the soul. In the case of oratorios, cantatas and masses I choose the performance according to who is performing what. Yes, a robust "The trumpet shall sound" from the Messiah by G.F. Handel as sung by Samuel Ramey is wonderful to listen to. However, Phillip Sly's rendition reacdhes the soul.
Oh heaven exists alright, and the Father of Lights has made every provision through His Son, Jesus Christ, for you to be there with Him. His love is non pareil, without peer. Look into it, you might find it worth the exploration.
gesaporiti: Sí, "El grave que hace Ramey hacia la mitad de la obra no está escrito pero queda buenísimo"; esa misma nota grave (6:35, una octava más bajo que la que figura en la partitura) cantan John Tomlinson y Alastair Miles.
Among the "oldtimers" hahaha ( depending on your age)..... THE BEST of AMERICANS... Bass... Ramey, Mezzo.... (no DOUBT about this one) Marilyn Horne.... and Soprano Leontyne Price. Seriously. HOLY BREATH CONTROL, mistress of glissando, pianissimo, fortissimo, phrasing (see her "farewell performance at the Met" ...the O Patria Mia from Aida where she set a record breaking standing ovation. The BEST part, is her reaction to the applause after she completes the aria. I cannot think of the link but NOT the one on TH-cam as presented by R. Fleming. Speaking strictly of American singers, having some trouble with thinking of a tenor of the same era... perhaps, Hadley??? Someone who may read this. Help me out.
The Mick Jagger of operatic basses. Doesn't get any better than this. I think even Handel would have been blown away.
The best ever! Every note clear and distinct, every word completely understandable, and the power! What a gigantic thrill it must be to sing such glorious music so perfectly.

IMO the gold standard for any bass or bass-baritone singing this piece -- 10/10 👏

At this stage in Ramey's career, his voice and technique were ideal for "Messiah."
The blessed saint gives humanity a challenge to believe, with words of hope, words to awaken faith, and words to live by. Beautiful performance. Thanks for uploading.
Unico grandissimo interprete di questa bellissima aria ascoltarlo è una immensa gioia grazie Samuel

Beautifully said! And how fitting to that magnificent performance. Thanks for the great comment!

This is simply a sublime performance by one of the great voices of our time.
Excelente voz. Y la orquesta con uno de los mejores directores👍
Could not sleep had to hear it.
The greatest singer in all of the human race.

What an astonishing voice Ramey had even when he was so young.

I was accustomed to having the tenor add in embellishments in this song. This one keeps it so simple and basic, and just as, if not more, wonderful.
He is in a class all by himself.
Oh MY! Fabulous! I don't know whether I like Samuel's sublime voice better, or the trumpets'. Both together in my favorite part of Messiah leave me speechless.
I remember watching this at the time and loved every second of it. Fantastic performance. Ramey's voice is like a roaring lion. Superb!!
Meraviglia di musica e voce! inarrivabile!
I will never forget his singing of Caesar in the Handel "Giulio Cesare" at the Met. Such a

Gesaponti: ¡the time is not important for the genius! Thanks for a great souvenir: Ramey, Levine, The Carnegie!
Bravo and great~🧑🎤👨🎤👩🎤😊
Mgnifico, insuperabile!
surely this is the definitive rendering ,Samuel Ramey: The bass's Bass! He is the master.
Bravo bravo bravo
GRACIAS POR ESTA DIVINA PROFECIA......
Great singer.
Oh my God, I have heard many and this is the best.
I have yet to hear a more superb basso sound. Ramey is the master. Thank God that I have been able to listen to him through the years, it's been a blessing.
Doc Esquire Jerome Hines? Not that it is or should be a contest.
+manthasagittarius1 Kurt Moll would be the proverbial cat amongst the pigeons in THAT contest! haha
Yes he is the best and it is my ambition to get half as good as him!!!
Hines makes Ramey sound like a school boy!!!!
And Glenn Miller makes Hines sound like a school boy -- its not a contest of who has the darkest, lowest voice (Ramey's range was actually lower than Hines, anyway). Hines was fantastic, and Ramey is fantastic -- they have different voices.
God, that was perfection. Absolute perfection, imo.
Beautiful.
Stupenda voce di Samuel Ramey.
Fabulous
Wonderful voice 🎉
Ramey is wonderful, as is Handel!!!
Tremendous ,& a rich tone. God bless
What a great voice
Magnificent! Beauteous resonance. The trumpet sounds! The cornet plays.
"Behold, I show you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed."
I remember that this verse was on the nursery door in my old church. Cute.
Thanks for sharing this clip.
I'm always pleased to find a display of Ramey's magnificent voice.
Very cute.
His voice brought tears to my eyes. Exquisite.
Beautiful singing, Mr. Ramey. So bravura, and your top is glorious. Congrats!!
With all in place in the world, I'm expecting the trumpet at any time.
Great voice, poor guy Samuel! Always overpowered! Forced by Jimmy Levine singing Handel! Look at Philippe Sly! Perfect stylistic balance with natural trumpet and orchestra , great timbre, not only voice!

It was a different era for sure. You simply had to be great. Now there are so many that aren't worth listening to at all.
Always magnificent!! Thank you.
Great performance! Ramey....fantastic
No other bass could sing Handel as magnificently as Sam!

Thanks for the info. I could tell it was not 2011, by how young he was, but I didn’t know when it was.
La voce adatta a quest'aria bella, ma difficile come poche altre: voce estesa e piena, ricca di sfumature. Bravissimo
Very good indeed.Lovely voice.
The best ever! This is my most favorite song in Messiah. No other singer has sung this song so magnificently. Samuel Ramey is a great bass singer in history.
A trombeta soará ! Que música magnífica! Não me canso de ouvir e também admirar Samuel Ramey!
Yes, Bravo Dad!!!! we love you and are very proud of every performance. :)
Happy holidays everyone. I'm celebrating by watching several hours of this video. The mingling of the powerful bass voice with the sweet high sounds of the trumpet is truly amazing. I am blessed to hear such beauty.
For me Samuel Ramey's rich bass and the great Bryn Terfel are by far the best recordings of the trumpet aria here on youtube.
Now I have also discovered George Tozzi and Jeromy Hines here. Wow!
Yes, Messrs. Hines and Tozzi sang this aria magnificently, as did William Warfield.
This is so beautiful! Yet is the first recording I've ever seen of Ramey breaking his voice!!! :O but putting that aside, it's a remarkable work indeed!! Ramey will always be one of my top role models! B)
@yafargo What option did he have with his natural endowments?
Tremendous, great clarity & accurate
Happy Birthday SAMI.Beautiful !!! I wish you would sing at the church this part.,I'll join you. so as other singers.Much love.

Perfetto!
Sí, Ramey fue un maestro entre los bajos del mundo, en su época dorada, hace unos 25 años o un poco más. Gracias por esta joya!
¡ Genial! ¡Y excelente dicción!
All respects due to Mr. Ramey's Kansas heritage -- BUT -- we're not in Kansas anymore Dorothy, we're in heaven.
Makes me feel the way I did when I was an Episcopalian---grand and glorious music. This was Kansan Samuel Ramey and a Tom Wills look-alike on the trumpet.

He’s so great!
Great Ramey is TERRIFIC Ramey
Thanks for posting
What a magnificent instrument!
Samuel Ramey was the best. Best overall performance was Toronto Symphony under Andrew Davis with Ramey as bass.
exceptional
Sam Ramey at Carnegie Hall...what could be better than that!
Rame formidabile
Happy Birthday, Samuel :)
LOVE HIM!
Un fracment que m`agrada molt i molt ben cantat per Ramey.
Maria Angels Molpeceres
It's Perfect !!!
Phil Smith is always a star on the trumpet!
Indeed, what could be better than Ramey and an excellent trumpet? Perhaps heaven, if it exists.
Keep dreaming, and work!
yes a modern trumpet has a much brighter sound. Period instruments may be closer to those used back in the day. Bigger halls need cut through.
Oh heaven exists alright, and the Father of Lights has made every provision through His Son, Jesus Christ, for you to be there with Him. His love is non pareil, without peer. Look into it, you might find it worth the exploration.

Absolutely superb. A voice made for this music. Ramey looks very youthful here. I wonder when this was done?

The great Philip Smith on piccolo trumpet!
Sing this in memory of Maestra Patricia Janeckova.
And that, folks, is how it's done.
Ramey has a fantastic voice. I'd love to hear him paired with Wynton Marsalis on the trumpet for this song!
Aria, anyway. Total agreement!
yafargo : for the same music composed by Haendel, Simon Estes & Maurice André are much more convincing.
