    I worked in a foundry and we had an OSHA audit. They wrote us up for not having ground prongs on the grinders. No amount of explanation about double insulation could persuade those assholes. We lopped off all the cord and installed 3 prong plugs. Of course there is no ground conductor so that 3rd prong doesn't do a fucking thing. Tax dollars hard at work...
    Excellent video Sir.

      I worked in the USAF and replacing our own plugs vs. ordering the cord assy. was verboten. More cords for me. In the parent case the OSHA inspector was a tard. You can ask OSHA for official written opinions with citations if you get a moron inspector.

    I worked for a Japanese manufacturer for many years. The level of detail spent on evolving the engineering was crazy. Every in house engineer working in the field could feed back any comment by any channel they liked to the factory. Everything from 'this part fails most' to 'the shipping packing on this part is annoying to remove' found it's way back. The nice bit is you would see the changes coming through within months, sometimes weeks. I even saw a motor casing get re-tooled because one screw on the mount was 'a bit tricky to get to'.

    Gotta tell you why I love these videos. I spent over 20 years in the Marines and not in any type of manufacturing fields. I am learning at an exponential rate with these videos. Not to mention that, like the Marines, this guy has a language that is only part English. His commentary is filled with so many purposely butchered words that they alone are worth the view. Thank you for the useful knowledge and colorful trip through the inner workings of every tool that I own.

      Great world to live in for people who know how to fix stuff, isn't it?
      One time a guy put a RUNNING lawn mower out on the curb. One man's trash...
      Still have that mower, still running like a top. Only problem is you've gotta short out the spark plug to stop the thing. Can get interesting if you have to do that in the rain.

      That's what I was doing, but sometimes my foot would slip off of the springy strip and touch the bare end of the spark plug.
      This is quickly followed by a series of shocks to my foot, much cursing, and occasionally wondering why I don't just wire in a switch to ground out the wire between the points and the ignition coil.

    Ave:
    When you strip the tool shell of of the electro-mechanicals is a good time to put the filthy plastimicated bits through the dish washer machine. Stuff comes out looking almost as good as new. And the spouse can't complain if you put her toys through the rinse cycle at the same time.

      I agree but I've heard uncle bumblefuck say that he feels it's a waste of time because it just get dirty again.
      I have the luxury of time, and the phrase while I was in there has cost me quite a bit of it. But I like my tools to look well cared for, I think I will treat a tool better if it's been well cared for,and I think others will too.

    You should make a video about the code designations of plastics. like what part of the code told you that it was nylon reinforced

    • @matman7546
      @matman7546 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      PA = polyamide GF = glass fiber 30 = 30%. Nylon is a generic name for aliphatic polyamides. It is important to mention however that though all nylons are polyamides, not all polyamides are nylons.

    • @VictorIndiaDeltaAlfa
      @VictorIndiaDeltaAlfa 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      What would then be abs-pa/sebs (in layman's terms)?

    • @matman7546
      @matman7546 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +VictorIndiaDeltaAlfa abs = acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. Pa = polyamide. Sebs = styrene ethylene butadiene styrene.

    • @VictorIndiaDeltaAlfa
      @VictorIndiaDeltaAlfa 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pungo Machungie Ok, can you describe any advantages or disadvantages versus PA-GF? Bosch uses this on their tools, that's why I'm curious.

    • @matman7546
      @matman7546 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +VictorIndiaDeltaAlfa sebs allows abs to be blended with pa. So abs-pa/sebs is a blend of abs and pa with sebs as a compatibilizer

  • @TheBrokenLife

    I have a buddy that was a tool repairman until that trade officially died about 6 years ago. He has 2 of every damn kind of tool from just about every manufacturer and almost all of them were "too expensive to repair" based on stupid things like what AvE saw here, like bad power cords, switches, a roached bearing, etc, etc. His power tool library would probably cost about $20k and he got it all for free from the junk pile.
    It's amazing what people will just throw out. Even paying a union electrician $50 an hour it would have been cheaper to repair that grinder than buy a new one. The terrifying part is that someone tried, and failed, to repair an obviously damaged power cord and just shit canned it anyhow. "Ain't my job!!"

    I love this channel. You learn about tools, have a good laugh and usually gain some sort of life tip on the side.
    I now know why my dad's Makita tools last so long, they don't fuck around with quality. Every Makita tool we own has only required a new power cord or brushes. Each is a joy to own and use, some going 20 years strong. Their motors are always more powerful than you would expect for their size, and they run with less vibration than other makes.
    We just bought a small 2.5 hp Makita router from a plumber who used it for counters and the brushes looked hardly used. The outside looks like it was thrown around in a tool box, but besides that it must have only a few dozen hours on it. Steal of a deal as we got it for half price due to the battle worn exterior.

    Would you check the rotation of the gear with the three lock pin pockets? I'm thinking that those ramps might be designed to prevent the lock being engaged at a too fast a speed. If the lock button is pressed the ramp launches the pin away from the lock hole until the speed goes down. Nice job Makita. First build it bullet proof, then don't let the user shoot at it to begin with!

  • @ericjames5163
    @ericjames5163 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The ramps on the gear are to get the lock pin to jump the gap when someone gets silly and presses the button while it is running. I once had a new coworker call it the shocker button. I was worried the tool was malfunctioning and shocking him. Nope, just like a large hand buzzer toy he was playing with the lock button while he was sanding. As always, thanks for the thorough review and showing off the inside parts of the tools we all love and respect.

    Shop I worked in had these almost exclusively and they didn't kill them very often and they ran 40+ hours a week, Usually just new brushes and cord repairs was all that was needed to keep them going. Held onto one of these just long enough to decide that grabbing gears was easier than becoming a welder.

    Been welding for a living for the last 20 years , I wont use anything but a Makita grinder , I have had to in a pinch use other brands , they just don't last.
    I usually use the Makita 4-1/2 inch grinders , and most often one of three things goes wrong with them , the cord freys , the brushes wear out , and the switch goes bad , but most of the time it's the cord.
    I have played hell finding replacement brushes locally same day , and usually don't have time to order them , so I cough up the bucks and go buy a new one.
    I did discover a happy accident , the brushes in the chepo $20 dollar Harbor Freight grinder will work , the same ones with the removable disc on the sides , they just need to be filed down a bit to fit.

    Have a 7" Makita side grinder that's been used for building woodburning stoves to oil rigs. Can't imagine what I have NOT used it for. It's over 30 years old and I've only had to replace the brushes (which were soooo easy to get to. Will have to replace the cord as slinging it around by same over the years has worn havoc..Great program. Leave it on even when I'm not watching to hear you go on and on..hypnotic..

      I sometimes re-grease, and another good idea is to run brushed motors like these on reduced voltage for a couple hours to seat the brushes, 12v DC usually works OK for 120v AC universal motors. If it has a triac speed control you may have to bypass that. Have done it to everything from kitchen appliances to vacuum cleaners to these tools.

    The epoxy coating around the commutator tangs is called gel banding.
    It's used to prevent fatigue failures of the copper fusing at the tangs when there is either very high speed involved or radial flexing of the main shaft.

    Hi AvE, Just found this vid due to my own blues with my Makita GA9000. The bearing you referred to as 608 at the end of the commutator (close to the power switch) on my grinder got so hot and burned the end of the fields wires including those ring wires... At disassembly the bearing disintegrated totally and all I could find on the floor was 4 bearing balls and a bearing side cover. The centre part of the bearing is still on the commutator and it is a bit of a challenge to remove :D Thanx for an awesome informative vid.

    I have the smaller Makita grinder from 1995-ish. I got it so hot the fan melted and started rattling around. I was in the field and had to get the job done so I opened her up and pulled the fan off. I still use it today. I always intend to only use it for short light jobs, but frequently get it so hot I can't hold it so I put on the welding gloves. The detent on the switch is toast so I have to hold it, but the damn thing won't die so it still gets occasional use. I'll use it till it stops.

    • @theLuigiFan0007Productions

      afroninjadeluxe
      It wasn't in a vacuum, but the neodymium magnet was a sphere shaped one about 9-10mm across. Essentially, the only thing touching the sphere as it accelerated was air, and a sphere is pretty aerodynamic. Hall effect sensors and optical sensors provide feedback on position and it hold it in place like one of those floating globes. That's commonly referred to as a magnetic bearing. All it needs to do then is start shifting the field so it rotates, while still keeping it afloat, and you have acceleration. In my configuration there's no speed limit, just the magnet providing feedback to the rotating field generator, so it goes as fast as it feels like. I measured the AC frequency at about 2kHz, and as the power draw dropped off significantly a few seconds after reaching said speed, it was safe to assume the magnet wasn't lagging the field much.
      And trust me, I stood well back and used a computer and cheap webcam to observe the thing from the other room. If the sphere flys off, well that's pretty much gonna leave a mark on what it hits.

      I made the mistake of buying a King brand grinder for a project a while back. This is a brand i would equate with HF brand. It lasted less then 25 min before it seized (bearing) and started smoking. Because i owned other (proper) grinders for work and i just needed one for odd home projects i decided to replace it with the Ryobi rat tail (a brand i would generally avoid at all costs)and have been pleasantly surprised with it especially given the price point. The ergonomics, the adjustable handle that i originally thought was gimmicky has actually been useful, reasonably powered and it probably saw 30hrs of grinding in it's first week of life. Couple years later and still kicking, though lightly used since.

      I almost never change disks, because I have one for each type. And I go easy on them. A coulpe of them I've had for years and they still work. the lock is a Joke but since I don't have to change disks all the time its ok.
      Also had one I bought just to do one job, and ofc it failed within 10 minutes, actually caught fire and tripped the breaker. that was a 50$ tool, Hyundai brand, so you know one not to buy.

    • @PervertedThang
      @PervertedThang 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tristan Peoples You can say what you want about CT Mastercraft tools, but I have yet to have one fail me. I have a variety of their stuff because when it comes on sale, it can't be beat by the other more name brand stuff. Granted, I don't make my living off my tools, so I may have a different opinion them. I've got a grinder, drill press, plunge/fixed base router kit, super cheap table saw, and sliding compound miter saw. The table saw is lightweight, so the base is pretty flimsy, but I've ripped boards, plywood and MDF with it. Probably all on the same blade. My only complaints are that it's not big enough and that the fence has a terrible lock. But on sale and with my mittful of Canadian Tire pesos, I think I spent ninety bucks on it. The miter saw cuts spot on once you tweak the laser, but my good Lord it's a noisy cork soaker. Makes me wonder if there's any grease in it. The router is exactly the same as a Craftsman. Right down to the casting and moulding. I'm guessing most of this stuff is made in the same factories.
      Now, their Jobmate brand...that's on par with the Power Fist crap.

    Fun fact. The gear drive for a 7.3 powerstroke High Pressure Oil Pump is held in place the exact same way the pinion gear is on this grinder. One bolt, torqued to 95ft lbs holds the gear to the pump. Pretty Shweet. But if you don’t get her torqued down enough when the engine gets hot resulting in slippage.

    Used to detail cars for a living when I was younger and I got pretty serious about the tools of the trade. Can confirm, Makita makes one hell of a good buffer, and I reckon it's only about 20% different parts to this grinder. To get a better rotary buffer than the Makita, you've got to spend at least twice as much.
