    What is Virtual Autism?
This is a term coined by Romanian clinical psychologist Dr. Marius Zamfir. This is when a child exhibits autism-like symptoms due to screen-time (around 4-5 hours a day)... How real is this? We don’t know yet… But we do see a huge spike in autism diagnoses in the past 10 years… This might be one of the reasons why.
Virtual autism doesn’t mean your child is autistic. It means your child will show autism-LIKE symptoms. Recent studies e.g. www.afahc.ro/ro/afases/2018/4... have shown that getting the child off-screen time reduces the symptoms. In some cases, the symptoms disappear. When this happens, the child is actually not on the autism spectrum but has symptoms of such because of screen time and the lack of parent-child interaction.
    Screen Time is Addictive
Let’s face it, you’re probably reading this on your smartphone. Digital well-being is a huge thing for us adults as well, so it’s should be obvious that it’s many times more dangerous for children. I have had students who can’t speak but were able to type “mickey mouse” into TH-cam and find the video s/he want to watch.
We need to remember that gadgets are great for learning when used correctly. However, it can re-wire the brain to crave for more. Whilst it’s well studied that in an adult brain it releases dopamine and makes us want to keep on doing the same thing over and over. The effects of using the smartphone for entertainment purposes are not well studied in a child’s brain. We need to stop our children from becoming screen junkies - they get mad when it stops and would do anything for another hit.
How Children Learn to Use Language
The main problem with watching videos is that the child won’t know how to use the language. That’s because when s/he is watching, you’re probably not interacting. From experience, children who have both high screen time and low parent-child interaction time suffer the most in language delay.
What this means is, if the child spends a lot of time watching videos, that becomes his/her language environment. Remember Tarzan? He couldn’t speak all that well because there was a lack of human communication.
Whereas children are learning language from devices, they can count, say the alphabet, sing songs, and remember phrases even. Children or even us learn a language in chunks (gestalt language processing). That’s why children will pick up whole phrases without knowing the meaning of the individual words. Videos facilitate that, we need to teach more variations of language to help the child learn more and different chunks.
The only way for a child to learn how to use the language is through social interaction. It’s one thing to learn the words, and it’s another thing to use to communicate.

OMG IT'S A REAL THING! AND IT WILL GET BETTER!
My son was close to 3yrs old when a speech therapist told me he has severe speech delay and might be autistic. He knows all, his shapes colors that most adults don't know, reads alot of words etc..all in english while french is my first language, but he couldn't communicate and was using already made sentences. He was obsessed with wheels on his toys.
I stopped the screen, and i could already see him improved A LOT whithin few days! And his interest for speech sky rocket within a few weeks! Within 2 months he's making his own sentences, makes long dialogues, makes demands, loves guessing games, make up stories he pops out of his head, can explain what he did at the kindergarten, even knows words in english that i didn't know.😂 I'm speechless, he can even communicate a lot in French.
I have to say, after about 2 months, i started turning on the tv for short periods of time with shows like " Miss rachel " and it got his communication skills even better.
So there's hope people! But now he won't stop talking lol and I'm here for that!

I was hoping to hear for something like this. My 3 and a month year old girl has also speech delay and ive stopped screen time completely. Her speech has improved, behaviour, interaction have changed too to the positive. The speech therapist who saw her was also wondering if she was autistic. But she isn't. She is a completely different girl. I'm hoping that by the end of the summer she'll be able to have a full conversation with me. But I can say the talking is nonstop these days and I'm loving it.

I had 2 babies during lock down, my first I didn't expose him to screen time until he was around 12 months when my 2nd was born..i was breastfeeding my newborn and struggling to keep my 1 year old occupied it was very intense and I didn't have much help at all, completely alone with them most of the time.. This meant my second born was exposed to screen instantly, it was on most of the day in the background and became habit in working around them both and keeping a house together. Fast forward to now they're just turning 2 and 3, the 3 year old has speech delay but not too bad, but my 2 year old struggles with eye contact, responding to any kind of social cues, wouldn't even babble let alone say any words. 2 weeks ago I came across this video and immediately eliminated the TV screen entirely. 3 year old is communicating more, says about 50 new words. But main one is my 2 year old, he's responding to his name finally, he's babbling and even copying simple words like ball, baby, bye, hi, he has full eye contact, copying gestures and expressions, sleeping through the night for the first time, eating full meals... Its literally like a miracle has come upon our house!! My gut instinct told me that my little ones where affected by the screen and that they weren't autistic.. Healthcare worker has been really pushing for paediatric referrals.. Im incredibly grateful that I looked into this and my family members who visit also can't believe the change! Eldest has speech and language therapy in the pipeline which I'll still go ahead with, but I'm excited to see what the next few months being and whether they still think my youngest is autistic because he is literally a different child already! This is REAL!! Virtual autism is a thing and it CAN be reversed! They enjoy going out a few hours every day to explore nature and we play, learn and communicate all day long now 🥰 I thank God for blessing me with healthy children and I realise now what I was doing wrong!

Our health visitor was suspecting autism for our son at the 2 year health check but later ruled it out. I relied too much on screen time when I was working at home while he was 1 and decided to take a year off work while he was 2 so we could get out more and he is now at nursery part time as a 3 year old. He is improving but still behind his peers

This happened to my 22 month old gorgeous little boy, we had a tough period of 2 months where we gave our little one screen time. We've noticed this was happening and removed phones completely during the day. I stopped using my phone and leave it aside during the day to spend as much quality time as possible. (I'm a stay at home mummy). Our little one has improved SO much in even just a week or two! He's loving to look at picture books and find the correct picture I.e. lion if I say "I wonder where the lion is" and loves being rewarded with clapping, 'well done' and to repeat the word! We've limited tv time to 0-1 hour max together.
Unfortunately he is not forming full words yet but he's trying so hard to imitate similar sounds to whichever words he remembers. He shows high understanding of language, and he's starting to bable again and say mama, which he definitely stopped doing during that period of intense screen time.

@@afghan939 Actually a lot of things happened to us which affected the lives of myself and my son. So we have not stopped screen time but only use it as a last resort when I absolutely need to get things done. I noticed that putting cartoons on the TV is a little better since my little one would play with toys around the TV. The things that really worked in improving his speech so far have been one on one play time for a period of time without distractions in the day, where i discuss his favorite toys as he plays with them, desvribing the colour etc. And outdoor playtime! My little one is due to start nursery soon for two days a week, so I can also update as things move along! My little one shows super comprehensive understanding of language and has multiple languages in the home at the same time though. So it's all my personal experience. If you have the availability, then another thing that worked for us was plenty of outdoor pram rides! Picking out cars and trucks on the road and naming their colours etc. Wonderful exercise too!

This is so important! Children are getting diagnosed with autism and no one is really addressing screen time on a very young developing mind. This is what appeared to happen to my grand child. There needs to be warnings about this. I thought it was helping our child learn and did not realize it was harming his ability to speak. I gave him videos as I was helping his father with stage 4 cancer. I was trying to take care of both of them by myself and it was overwhelming. Thank you for exposing this danger. Our grand child is so much better without the addiction of the screen effecting his speech development. He was seen by a child psychologist but not diagnosed with autism thank God. Buts screen time did cause speech delay and especially if there is a genetic susceptibility to these delays. My son is in Heaven now so I take care of my grandchild. He is getting speech therapy and ABA. Which has helped me know what to do to turn this around. It is encouraging knowing that speech delay and some autism like symptoms do reverse in time. Nature and face to face interaction is good for young children.

@@heartz500 we are in California and you can get ABA until they turn 3 years old without a diagnosis in CA if your Pediatritian will write a letter saying that your child will benefit from the ABA.
But all ABA Therapist are not the same we had to remove 2 because they were just playing with him and there was not goal oriented assessment and training to help him. Also they did not document his progress or achievements so they can keep treating him and getting state funding for their services so after you get it remember you can be kind but request different therapist if you are not comfortable and there are different organizations so check their reviews prior to selecting an ABA group.

My nephew is 3 going on 4 and he's a pandemic baby and has had an ipad since he was about 3 y/o. We started to notice he was overstimulated while watching youtube videos, he would flip and flop around and watch many letters, number and shapes but wasn't communicating with us. He would watch videos in russian, heberew and other languages and even started speaking russian. I then changed his youtube account to kids only, which my sister should have done a long time ago but we didn't see much improvement. Wasn't until my mom decided to take the ipad away for good, he hasn't had it in about a month and WOW it was like night and day. He's playing with his toys, he uses the potty, he is starting to initiate conversation and is a much calmer kid. I think virtual autism is real and I don't doubt that they will deny this diagnosis for a long time because the tech companies want these kids to use these devices, watch ads and get their parents to spend more money. Wishing our next generations so much growth and joy!

The wifi signal was always poor so my son couldnt watch is youtube videos. We was there for 6 weeks . He immediately statted communicating and imitating . Started repsonding to his name , started to give eye contact. There was also many family members in the house so he was constantly interacting with someone. I reallt thought we was going to improve until we came back to the uk and he regressed and stopped communicating . I keep thinking whay was different then vs now but this video is helping me relaise it was no / little screen time plus more interaction . Ive reduced screen tome to 30 mins a day. Its only been a few days but one thing ive noticed is that he is starting to notice and directly laugh towards his baby sister .

My daughter, before 2.5, she was perfectly alright.. used to speak a few words and was a happy kid.. covid time changed our life.. she started to watch lots of tv.. because of covid situation, we never took her out to play with other kids.. we were so scared if she got covid.. coming to the current situation, we enrolled her in a daycare 3 months back.. but she is not interested in playing with any kids.. she likes to be around her caretakers.. she speaks very minimum words.. doesn't follow any commands .. if I call her name, she won't respond .. but if I call her name along with her favorite food name, then she looks and comes towards us... poor eye contact also.. we stopped her screen time to zero around 3 months back (same time she joined playschool).. she totally adjusted with it.. but she is in her own world without following any commands or not using language for her needs.. she never asks any questions like what or why? May be she doesn't know it at all.. we are starting her speech therapy.. waiting for the admission.
I was so worried and did her analysis.. and the result is saying mild autism.. I'm planning to resign my IT job and focus only on my daughter..somewhere my mind is saying she may have virtual autism.. because she can remember lots of images from her books and answer me, though..

Regarding speech, she is learning words and applying in real life, stopped gestures.. still not talking like her peer group.. for that sentences are required.. kid is learning two words now.
Hope this helps you.. keep supporting them without screentime and talking a lot, lots with little one will help a lot.. hope this will help you. All the very best.

Hey, I have a question. I didn’t have electronic between ages 0-4, and actually didn’t know what they were. The most a I used was an old computer and tv(this was around the time of educational shows), but I had screen time from an old computer, but they managed it. I was just diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome. I also have bad motor skills from a young age and had a routine everyday that my mind has created for myself(it was very specific). My mother even said she only saw changes when I started to go to school, and I was very pleasant and understanding in the home before school and electronics. Is the routine and bad motor skills an sign of definite autism. My mom set me up for dance classes, but I still struggled there.(shuffle ball change was my enemy)

now i look into it .. i think my 3 and 1/2 yr old son got virtual autism not high functioning autism .. he scored 89 (90-100 is normal)and for social skills at a 29 (31 and up normal) .. when we went to early development child center .. the speech pathologist said his scores are right at boarder line .. but i didnt tell them about him watching tv for 4 to 7 hours a day.. if i tried to stop tv he will hav meltdowns..crying for hours..thats very hard on me thats y i failed in stopping his tv time.he knows his numbers/fruits/ alphabets/can read has eye contact response to his name ..no rituals.. play with his younger brother etc.. except one thing mainly speech delay .. they said he got high functioning autism because of echolilia.. i did read that echolilia after 3 means autism.. but with him i was wondering his echolila might be because i work night my hus work days he sees one person at a time in past 2 years.. and less talking.. literally i quit my full time and he hearing a legit conversation is when he become a 3 year old.. so i wonder if his echolilia is normal.. and when in group he dont really know what to do ..i assume that has to do with him in home from 1 and half years to 3 and half years sitting at home due to covid not seeing nobody .. no peers in the 2 year period..

She used to watch TV from 6 month to till 1 month ago, she can say everything from the tv shows, she knows what's coming next, she can connect with real things to tv shows but the problem is she doesn't communicate to us or make requests. Sometimes says water, or if she wants to go out she gives me her jacket to dress her up. But if I ask her from a book where is this n that she can point so well, she knows all shapes, colors, alphabet, number. She is great at pretend play. I started to limit screen time.
Could you please let me know. What do you think.. is it virtual or classic..

my son is 3 yo and like you mentioned in this video, can sing songs and label names of fruits and veggies but not communicate his needs using words. He relies on non-verbal cues to interact with us. He started school and there is now a lot of pressure to interact socially so he is struggling. I have tried removing screen time, but there is a huge meltdown following that. He also shows less interest in toys and imaginative play. I would love if you can provide strategies to help parents eliminate this toxic relationship with screen.

I like to add some comment here.. some scientist made some study that geograhically some parts of certain countries are proned to high autism case than another. research shows that those areas with higher rainfall or bad weather has higher cases of autism..and why ? pretty simple answer.. this children will spend more time indoor watching their electronic devices rather than going outside and learning nature or have correct child-adult interaction time away from their gadget. so to speak.. I totally agree 100% that virtual autism does exist. the only way out is to electronic fasting for the child e.g. > 40 days away from this gadget and you can see the vast improvement start showing. try it!

My 2 year 4 months old child can't frame the words into sentences but he can type p on Google search and select Penguin to see Penguin pictures. He can stop, change and replay the videos but he can't say more than 'food' 'milk' 'water' and 'potty'. If he has a mosquito bite he'd take hand and keep it on it. Makes eye contact only when he initiates it. Wouldn't listen at all. Would name the objects he knows but to himself. That's what virtual autism looks like.

We can't deny the fact that screens are, and will continue to be, part of human life. Therefore, I believe that it's important for the new generations to become skilled at using 'em. I don't think that it's the screens themselves that are harmful, but allowing a kid to engage in a certain activity that doesn't involve social interaction without boundaries is the problem. A kid could just as well get these "virtual autism" symptoms from playing with Legos indoors too much or from spending all of their time painting in their room. Parents blame technology for something they themselves are responsible for and have full control over... It would be like letting my dog play with 1 specific toy all the time for a period of time and then find out that he can't function anymore without it, and then blame the toy itself for it instead of myself...
