Dr. Mary Barbera explores the growing conversation around virtual autism-a term used to describe autism-like symptoms in young children, potentially linked to excessive screen time. Is virtual autism real, and can it be prevented? I'll share insights from my professional experience and personal journey with my son, Lucas, as well as real-life examples from my clients.
I’ll explain the potential effects of too much screen time on children’s development and provide actionable strategies to prevent virtual autism. We’ll also review screen time guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), offering tips on how to balance screen use with engaging activities that support healthy growth.

100% virtual autism is a real thing. I’m living it right now and there is HOPE. So many children have fully lost any autistic symptom they had but it takes no screen time and a lot of interaction to help your child! Parents do your OWN research about this before just assuming it’s not real and the screen is not hurting your child’s development. Not to mention the AAP recommends 0 screen time before 2 years old.
Yes. While it’s not an officially recognized medical condition, some researchers and parents have noticed that toddlers who spend a lot of time on digital devices can show signs like delayed speech, poor social interaction, and repetitive behaviors-similar to those on the autism spectrum.
Virtual Autism is real! Please read the research for yourselves if you are a parent or provider with questions! Google the term “virtual autism”
And make a decision for yourself! Please turn off the screens and interact with your child to replace the time…teach them the skills they need for the leisure! You are so very valuable to your child and their development! Their brain is built off of yours! Thank you to all parents willing to be nourished by the literature and trusting your GUT! If you believe your child may be affected by Virtual Autism…there is HOPE! Hope for all kids with this past exposure and showing these red flags!
I have never heard of “virtual Autism” but you seem to be a bit back and forth and also with a bit of hesitancy as you discuss this topic…I hear recommendations on screen time, but what about the elderly person that has autism that didn’t have access to “screen time” when they were younger? In this current time, I think this is a way to shift the blame from vaccines and “if you took Tylenol while pregnant”, (I don’t think either of these are the causes by the way) to the parents/grandparents and that’s not right…there are a ton of kids that have a ton of screen time before they should and don’t have Autism.

I think it all depends because my son loves watching music videos and he started talking like 5 1/2 and how it helped was with the music videos. same with reading. He's amazing at reading and spelling, but he hardly talks full sentences.
Yes. I talk about this in the video. Kids need engagement outside of screen time and it doesn't always lead to autism-like symptoms.
Yup my developed an incontrolable head tick 7-30 a min horrible. Took away iPad fully tics gone in 3 days. Now it’s all monitored and time her on the iPad instead letting her have it so much like I did in the summer.
Daughter is 6 pls
Pls pls don’t give iPad until after 1st grade and even then it’s way too soon but since they use it in school they want it at home as well
Thank you for sharing this.
Mary my son is 2.5 and isnt speaking just babbling and yelling. I try to teach him to do things and talk patiently but he just won't sit still long enough or has no interest in listening to me or his mother. What can i do? Thanks

Can you please recommend good toys or games for my grandson who will be three shortly? I am at my wits end on how to help him. Thank you.

I feel that my grandson who will be three in October and is struggling to speak may be on the spectrum. We have definitely given him too much screen time. I’m so concerned and feel so guilty but after COVID we just didn’t know. The wait time for a dev pediatrician is so long. How can I help him? I’m so sad.
You can join me for a free online workshop at www.marybarbera.com/workshops while you wait.
My son is turning 3 in October as well and is also nonverbal. He does watch TV, but not all the time. He can sit down while his dad reads to him, or I can put a bunch of fish on the screen and he'll do something else like play with his block. He has NEVER had a tablet or smart phone in his hands. We are in the firm belief he is on the spectrum or at the very least has ADHD.
