I will run them til I’m out of the 150 I bought for sure. The petals go a little further than I thought they would. That’s a lot of energy dumped at ~4”
I’m excited about this one because I actually have a couple of boxes. I wasn’t sure if it would really perform, but it clearly does. Seems like a good carry option now that I have seen the results. I’m not sure there are any other gel tests on TH-cam for these rounds

Outstanding testing and recording by the way. I love Federal ammunition! Federal does everything right. They make the best ammunition for defense and for hunting and the neatest ammunition to. Federal Syntech is my favorite ammo to use in my pistols for target shooting. Federal HST is still number one for 9mm defense ammo in my book followed by Speer Gold Dot but I put this ammo just below HST and Gold Dot so this is really good defense ammo in my opinion.

If I were wanting to run segmenting rounds, these would be at the top of the list if accuracy was acceptable. That straight line deeper penetration is a plus in my humble opinion.
I'd carry it. That terminal chunk was definitely not a "disc" or a "pill," like with those light segmenting rounds, and the penetration was ideal, likely to leave two holes then chill out.
So , funny thing, i have these in my Glock 26 , not because i thought they were special , but I got them during the pandemic when this was all the 9mm they had that day. I saw your ammo hunt video a couple weeks ago showing these and thought oh boy here we go. Anyway I didn't see anything here that has me pressed to shoot them on my next range trip just to switch them out. Im like you , I probably wouldn't buy them if the normal choices were available , but you could do worse than these I think. Thanks for the test!
Great test. I have been looking for a test of these. I wish you tested them on bare gel as well as the heavy clothing. Pretty impressive performance and sharp edge main projectile.
Thank you for this test. You've done the best test of this round that I've seen anywhere on YT. Very informative. I recently bought 100 rounds of this at a decent price and with your test I'm now more confident of how it will perform out of my full size guns.
Federal knows bullets after all they made the hst and that is the best overall cup core hp ever made to date, velocity is great on those. Looks good those petals would do something at that size.Good detailed job you did here.
Wow! I'm impressed! These are the kinda rounds if you ever are in a situation where you don't have time to make a perfect aim. These fragmented pieces are gonna hit something vital in the body that will eliminate the threat...
Worked at a gun store a few years ago. Saw multiple instances where these syntech rounds (fmj) squibed, even have videos of driving them out of barrels. Just based off my personal experience I wouldn't mess with them
Nice balance of substantial damage from the multiple (albeit shallower) wound tracks yet still enough penetration from the core to ensure you get deep enough to stop the threat quickly. I'd carry these any day, but I've always been a fan of Federal Ammo.
Not bad performance at all. Kind of get the performance of three rounds in one bullet. You get the speed and shock of the original impact with a heavy enough bullet. Then you get the "hollow point" action of the round opening up and the petals breaking off. And finally the base having enough weight to get good penetration. Plus if you were forced to shoot in a crowded area it seems the possibility of overpenetration and ricochet would be less likely. Interesting test and result. I have seen Wilson Combat going to this type of bullet on some of their loads.
I find myself watching more and more of your videos. Thanks for getting the real performance on rounds for the rest of us. I always learn something from your videos.
Reasonably impressed.with the consistency of this fragmenting round. I do have a couple of boxes and they aew loaded into my Glock 26. Definitely good to know the degree of penetration that these rounds deliver. Great test! Thank you!
I was unaware of this particular product. Good testing. I will have to see if my local store carries it and perhaps get a box to see how I like it, recoil-wise.

That was a very informative review and I really like your new Chronograph. After watching the gel test results I wouldn't hesitate to carry these for self-defense, especially how they performed in the short barrel test.
I have the Tarus TX 22. I bought the stanndard. I did not want the red dot. I wanted something at the range that has the grip of a 9mm with out the expense of 9mm ammo. I have found it to be accurate and fun to shoot. It takes the Agulia (Mexican) ammo, which is only about 8 cents per round. I have a friend who bought one and required service. Tarus paid for the shipping both ways. I was just recieved via Fed-Ex and plan to see if the feeding problem was fixed. I am mentioning this as the customer service and limited lifetime warranty to the origional warranty works. I think in the past Tarus was a bit light on warranty etc.
Those rounds do seem to do what they claim on the box! Looks like your radar is working pretty well, I still haven't had time to get out with mine for some airgun and muzzle loader testing.
Great test, Brian! While I've never really considered fragmenting rounds before, these actually impressed me! Ok, not quite enough to give up on the Lehigh Xtreme Defenders, but if I can find some cheap enough I might grab a couple of boxes. I'm not sure why exactly but I do find them interesting, especially when I figured from the start they would fall on their faces! I think these actually are as good (and maybe better!) than the new bullet from Lehigh, the Controlled Fracture (another segmented bullet). I'm guessing it has a use, maybe home defense in a city situation? Not sure where it would be best but no matter what, it's an interesting round! Thanks again for the test! Cheers, jc
The best performing fragmenting round you have tested. I'd not want to be the doctor trying to chase down those fragments inside a perp, nasty. If you can find some, it'd be fun to see some Glaser Safety Slug tests. Many years ago I was given one to shoot, fired into a plastic jug of water at 15yd, impressive energy dump. I remember it well because the cap on the jug blew straight back at me and I managed to catch it. Designed to not ricochet and poke holes in airplane skin. Air Marshals supposedly used them.
@@ToolsandTargets but thinking a bit, these would be no bueno for ANY sort of barricade, and then IF you worry about over penetration, where do those 3 little chunks go if you hit a arm or leg ? they're gonna exit with enough juice to penetrate.
The theory of fragmenting bullets is that they do the most damage by creating muliple wound channels, creating more & faster bleed out, and it is harder to surgically repair any damage to soft tissue. I have used the Winchester .22 LR segmented rounds, very effectively, to take out armadillos! Its not an instant kill, but usually works in a few minutes! But its a .22! So...
I was looking for a review on these bullets. Very nice! The base is jacketed /coated. Which is what I needed to know to shoot out of my compensated p320 pistol.
I like the idea of multiple fragments tearing up a lot of muscle tissue, and cutting multiple paths, in tbe first few inches. I want to stop and disable an attacker, rather than kill them. I've seen two meat target tests where the "RIP" rounds with their eight fletchettes, have done what seems like wide tissue destruction in the first 2 inches or so. I might try carrying a "RIP"as the topmost defense round in the magazine, followed by either these Syntech or other decent hollow points.
Another good test brother. I've have never seen this ammo before and when it comes to Federal in 9mm I use HST but this stuff did pretty good. Very consistent velocities. I'm also not a fan of the fragmenting rounds but these seem better than most.
These are impressive fragmenting(or segmenting) bullets. Especially for a smaller caliber like 9mm. They fragmented and then the center went well past the 12" minimum. The segments went a considerable way into the gel also. Plus, the name might be less damaging to your legal defense if you ever needed to rely on them(compared to something like RIP.) The price is much better than Liberty Civil Defense and G2 RIP. It looks like Federal created another winner. 👍
Interesting performance, my feelings about these types of projectiles mirrors your own, but at least it got adequate penetration. I'm just not convinced that those extra fragments will lead to faster incapacitation. I suppose it can't hurt, but does it really help? I dunno.
Segmented rounds made a believer out of me when I tried the CCI quiet 22lr 40 grain that only runs at 710fps. They are as quiet as a pellet gun and are absolutely devastating for pest control. Ricochet concerns kept me from using normal 22 rounds with my ongoing beaver population, so my usual beaver load was a good 3” turkey shotgun load. The quiet segmented does the trick. If I didn’t already have a few rounds of 9mm HST’s in my cabinet…these 9mm segmented would be my choice based on my experience and your test. Thank you for doing this video. I’d sum up to say - don’t use a segmented on any “pest” you plan to eat.
Consistent velocity, damn near meets advertised velocity through a short barrel, multiple deep penetrating fragments, base penetrates very deeply, base has a nice flat nose to act like a wadcutter and cut better than a round nose or hollow point, and it reduces lead exposure to the shooter during practice. This stuff feels like the perfect 9mm ammo!
I am very impressed with this. I have been on the fence about using these rounds as my everyday carry. The reason is when it comes to self defense lawyers will say and use anything they can to why you used a frag round vs a jacketed hallow point. I know that sounds odd but these days lawyeers will use what ever they can to get you. Now for when SHTF I don't much care what a lawyer thinks. I would like to see if anyone has truly used these in a self defense case and the out come.
Apparently there was a guy that tested these in a hog. Hog never got up and ran. Shot through the shoulder. The segments wound up in the lungs and chest cavity. One of them went into the heart. Those fragments actually did work, and didnt stop in the shoulder or on-side ribs.
Advertised accurately. Says a lot for the manufacturer being honest.

You know I'm really not a fan of these segmenting rounds but I'd like to see somebody do a comparative gel test with like rip Underwood doing Lehigh defenses Controlled Chaos 9 mil the federal and just see who comes out on top and where you're at ballistic Leaf it makes sense to carry
Those would do some serious damage, great test, thanks for sharing
Appreciate ya!😎👊
Appreciate you for running this test. When you got them, my comment was that I’d be surprised if they didn’t hit 1100 out of a 3.1
I missed it by a little and I am surprised
I run them through an OG Ruger LC9 hammer fired and they kick like a government mule.
I’m not sure there are any other gel tests on TH-cam for these rounds
tnoutdoors has one on his channel. Same sku as tools I believe
The primer is lead free right?
I got some of those about in 2019.... They're some good rounds to have....
😎👊
I can't recall seeing a gel test done on these anywhere, (not saying they don't exist) but these perform very nicely. ...I'm happy with that segmenting performance.
Pretty cool stuff. Plus, you get style points for them being blue!💥😎💥
These are my go-to 9mm round. Great test as usual. Thanks.
Confirms my opinion.
Wow! Neat! Thanks a lot for testing this ammo and making a video of it because I have three boxes of this stuff and I wondered if it was any good and now I know.
I’ve had a box of these sitting in my safe for about 5 to 10 years maybe longer and I’ve been looking for reviews on them and I haven’t found anything. Thank you thank you thank you thank you.❤ I have these in hollow points to I’d be curious to see those tests
Thanks for the review on these. I'm gonna pick up a couple boxes of these when i come across them.
If I were wanting to run segmenting rounds, these would be at the top of the list if accuracy was acceptable. That straight line deeper penetration is a plus in my humble opinion.
Agreed
I'd carry it. That terminal chunk was definitely not a "disc" or a "pill," like with those light segmenting rounds, and the penetration was ideal, likely to leave two holes then chill out.
😎👊
So , funny thing, i have these in my Glock 26 , not because i thought they were special , but I got them during the pandemic when this was all the 9mm they had that day. I saw your ammo hunt video a couple weeks ago showing these and thought oh boy here we go. Anyway I didn't see anything here that has me pressed to shoot them on my next range trip just to switch them out. Im like you , I probably wouldn't buy them if the normal choices were available , but you could do worse than these I think. Thanks for the test!
Yessir. I'd leave em loaded up.😎👍
As well as these performed today, there are plenty which are worse. These look like ideal manstoppers for this caliber IMHO.
Great test. I have been looking for a test of these. I wish you tested them on bare gel as well as the heavy clothing. Pretty impressive performance and sharp edge main projectile.
That's pretty consistent ammo. I'm impressed.
Yep
Had lots of jams (ftf) with mine, but the two guns were new. Motivated me to try them again.
I've carried these in a backpack smg for years. Glad to finally see them in action. Thanks buddy, great informative videos for the ballistics guys!!!
You're definitely well-armed if you have these in a SMG.
Thank you for this test. You've done the best test of this round that I've seen anywhere on YT. Very informative. I recently bought 100 rounds of this at a decent price and with your test I'm now more confident of how it will perform out of my full size guns.
Looks like a pretty impressive round would be a good carry round.
The amount information and way it’s given is phenomenal thank you 🙏🏾
Federal knows bullets after all they made the hst and that is the best overall cup core hp ever made to date, velocity is great on those.
Just based off my personal experience I wouldn't mess with them
Interesting
I’m impressed for it if one wants a projectile that separates. I was really impressed with extreme spread.
Maybe test the 45 acp version if you can find them since so many 45 loads fail to expand
I'll take a look.😎👍
That SD is nuts. That is better than most people can do with single stage press reloading and a high in powder scale
These segments for once with pistol ammo went a decent length pretty nice
Surprised me.
Been waiting for this one since the ammo hunt video from a few weeks ago
😎👊
Impressive! Work as designed and very consistant. No worries if you are looking for a frang round.
😎👍
I like them. Impressive! Awesome content brother!
Thank you sir.😎👊
I find myself watching more and more of your videos. Thanks for getting the real performance on rounds for the rest of us. I always learn something from your videos.
Reasonably impressed.with the consistency of this fragmenting round. I do have a couple of boxes and they aew loaded into my Glock 26. Definitely good to know the degree of penetration that these rounds deliver. Great test! Thank you!
I was unaware of this particular product. Good testing. I will have to see if my local store carries it and perhaps get a box to see how I like it, recoil-wise.
Definitely not what I was expecting.😎👍
Interesting test, thanks again. I really appreciate you putting in the time and effort to create these videos, I cannot do these test myself living in an urban area, so I really appreciate guys like you doing the work for me. Stay safe.
Segmentation Sunday! Did well & about equal on both barrel lengths. Good color too. 😂
Your bullets have got to match your outfit! 💥🕺💥
@@ToolsandTargetsIf I ever get a Tools and Targets t-shirt what color ammo should I use? 😂😂
Those rounds do seem to do what they claim on the box! Looks like your radar is working pretty well, I still haven't had time to get out with mine for some airgun and muzzle loader testing.
BEST 9mm Self-Defense Round? - Federal Syntech Defense on Beyond Seclusion channel
see this in real action. impressive
Cheers,
jc
Thank you sir. I'm glad to see em keep some weight to the round instead of making it super light like most of these types.
There was a flash of light/fire on both of those rounds as the rounds fragmented.
Hmmm
darn, that's about the same as a .380 PLUS 3 pellets of #4 buck .. I'm going to get some for the carbine..
my EDC load is Hornady Critical Duty 135 std. press. I like 'heavier' bullets
Yeah, I like that they kept with a heavier weight with these.
@@ToolsandTargets but thinking a bit, these would be no bueno for ANY sort of barricade, and then IF you worry about over penetration, where do those 3 little chunks go if you hit a arm or leg ? they're gonna exit with enough juice to penetrate.
It would be interesting to see how far the core and the fragments go in gel after being fired from a carbine barrel.
So...
Not to bad and they preformed good. Another great freedom seed test brother tools.
Thank you sir. They did their thing.😎👍
I did like the syntech target rounds albiet they were a little more expensive than fmj, but they're also a lot cleaner.
These are way more affordable
Interesting performance, my feelings about these types of projectiles mirrors your own, but at least it got adequate penetration. I'm just not convinced that those extra fragments will lead to faster incapacitation. I suppose it can't hurt, but does it really help? I dunno.
Yeah, it's the big mystery.
Man I swear everytime I'm looking at a new ammo thinking about trying it out Tools puts a new video out on it Best channel out there
Appreciate that!😎👊
Segmented rounds made a believer out of me when I tried the CCI quiet 22lr 40 grain that only runs at 710fps.
Nice. Might have to do a video with those CCI segmented rounds.
These are my carry rounds, Ever since I saw Tnoutdoors9 do a video on them years ago.
Good looking stuff.😎👍
Consistent velocity, damn near meets advertised velocity through a short barrel, multiple deep penetrating fragments, base penetrates very deeply, base has a nice flat nose to act like a wadcutter and cut better than a round nose or hollow point, and it reduces lead exposure to the shooter during practice. This stuff feels like the perfect 9mm ammo!
have you ever thought about doing a test of 30-06 soft point vs fmj in the 150-180 grain range. great channel. keep up the excellent work.
Had these for a few years. Pretty cool rounds
The center core is almost the size of a jhp .45 before expansion 😮 nice
Thanks, Mr. T&T, for testing the "Smurf" 9mm defense ammo!
I would give these more credit. Pretty impressive
Apparently there was a guy that tested these in a hog. Hog never got up and ran. Shot through the shoulder. The segments wound up in the lungs and chest cavity. One of them went into the heart. Those fragments actually did work, and didnt stop in the shoulder or on-side ribs.
