@William Fry Hey William, I said don’t burn yourself because the week before in a video Tools said he had burned his hands badly while remelting the gel blocks.🤠
As a general rule when it comes to 9mm, the heavier 147-gr is preferable. More bullet material, deeper hollowpoint cavity (less likely to clogged up with clothing material), and less likely to deflect against laminated glass.
I thought the opposite was true. The 124gr has more reliable expansion and is generally more consistent. The 147gr is mainly if you want to stay subsonic.
@@kwinzman , depending on the bullet design. The heavier bullet has more consistent expansion and less tendency to clogged up from thick clothing material. @@chrissanchez9935 Thanks for the reply! Have you seen the 6 year old TFB TV video: 147gr HST gel test? It didn't really look like it was reliably expanding after clothing barrier.
I have been using 124 grn HST in my 9mm pistols pretty much exclusively for about a decade now. I've always had perfect results in all tests. And the expansion in all media has always been impressive. In fact I run HST in all my "self defense " pistol calibers (9mm, .45 ACP, .38 spcl)
@Jonah Patton true, but the Federal Hydrashok "Deep" in .380 is some great stuff, consistently hits the FBI 12" minimum unlike many .380's that go a few inches shorter.
This has been my defensive ammo from day one, which I purchased because it exceeded the FBI Ballestic Test. The other name brand. For me, is the Remington 124 grain Golden Sabre plus P. But, that's just me.
If the 147 grain is subsonic, then that means it doesn’t crack from breaking the sound barrier, which means I can just go for 147 grade 9 mm instead of 45 ACP?
EXCELLENT video! You fully answered the question I've been pondering for some time, now. I carry a Springfield Hellcat, and have noticed that, counterintuitively, the felt recoil is less with the 147-gr HSTs than it is with the 124s. Didn't know whether that would equate to less penetration or expansion with the heavier bullets. Since there is no significant difference between the two, I'll be carrying the 147-gr HSTs for my "serious social occasions" loads. 😎
The recoil between 9mm loads is already pretty light. Technically, the 147 has more recoil than the 124. More recoil feels like a push. However, the 124 has more snap and muzzle because it's a lighter load. The 147 has more recoil but less muzzle flip because it's heavier. The recoil of 9mm is already light so it's hard to tell the difference, so what it is is more recoil but less muzzle flip that is perceived recoil. 147 will give more penetration because more mass. That's why LE use it because they want a more barrier blind bullet. A 124 will give more expansion because its faster than a 147 in a bare ballistics gel test UNLESS if it's following FBI protocol for testing which is 4 layers of denim over the gel. If that's the case, then the 147 will have more expansion and penetration. Either way that's all in theory and scientific testing by the FBI. Find what you can and use it. You cant go wrong with either of them but shot placement is king. I use 124 for carry cause it's lighter, and 147 for home defense

Notice the 147 has two cannelures and the 124 has one cannelure. The old style 147 HST's only had 1 cannelure but in 2017 Federal added the 2nd cannelure to the 147 HST to retard expansion which allows more penetration. @8:11 you can see what I'm referring to.
I use Federal HSTs in the warmer , light clothing months and Underwood Defenders in the colder , thicker clothing months in EDC. After YEARS of research both on my own and MANY DOZENS of TH-cam videos - these two rounds are definitely the best and ONLY for me !!
@@GG_BEATScould be the hollow tip has more chance to get clogged in all the thick clothing and act more like an FMJ where underwood has no opportunity to.

I carry 147 g just to minimize over penetration. A bigger, heavier, slightly slower projectile impacting with more friction just makes more sense to me that it would stay in the target 🤔
I carry the HST in 9mm .. .357 Sig and .40 S&W .. you’d be hard pressed to find another round this consistent.. and as readily available.. in 50 round boxes at that .. you got me wanting a Taurus now ..
I would use the deeper penetrator. Under penetration is a thing and its more likely to occur than having a bullet exit a person, much less hit someone else. Misses are what you should worry about. Penetration is vastly more important than slightly larger expansion in this case. Ballistics gel is not flesh, blood and bones. Penetration is often much less in a live target than gel.
Hst’s are the gold standard. I don’t even have to watch the video ( but of course I will) to know they will both expand nicely and penetrate as well. This is why all I carry in my pistols are hst’s. Regardless of caliber or barrel length you will get optimal results.
@@jstud999 tell that to the FBI and many law enforcement agencies who do most of the extensive testing. They now use the Gol Dot G2. They have also used Hornady CD and Winchester PDX1 in the past. Paying that over the top price for HSTs just encourages that B.S. price gouging, I understand $30 max in the current prices, $40 no way in hell unless you hate money.
The 124 has a little bit more energy, but the 147 has a little bit more momentum. Maybe there is a trade-off as you get further down range, but I would feel confident with either round.
Kinetic energy characteristics for common handgun rounds (9x19, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, etc.) are not significant enough to reliably be considered measurements of "stopping power." Tissue damage for these common pistol rounds only happens with direct contact with the projectile and even then organs and tissue are elastic and can stretch around projectiles as they slow towards the end of their travel. Rifle cartridges going 2,500+ fps are another matter altogether, and will damage tissue and organs with kinetic energy transfer.
Glad I saw this video because I have an SW MP 2.0 9mm with a 4-inch barrel and it is a little uncomfortable to CC, I also have a Taurus g3c 9mm with a 3.1-inch barrel which is more comfortable to CC. but now I know that I will get a good performance from my Taurus with my HST rounds. Comparing the 124g HST 9mm in a micro to the 90g .380 HST in something with the same length barrel would be interesting. I am betting the .380 will only give up about 2"-3" maximum in penetration. Even though they start at the same diameter, the 9mm will likely expand more due to the heavier starting weight and the extra 200fps.

I want to carry 147 but saw reliability concerns from people that say it should only be ran with a suppressor? Is there reliability issues with 147 grain hollow points just going through a Glock 19?
This was a good test, they are indeed impressive rounds and probably why they are many peoples go to for defensive ammo. Although I must say I thought there would be a little more of a difference being 124 vs 147 still awesome none the less. When I got some of them I bought a few boxes of each cause I like to see which shoots better out of any particular gun. Have a good one my friend stay safe and I will see you on the next one.
Thank you sir. I honestly expected more of a difference too especially out of this short barrel. When you watch the slow-mo shots it does look like the 147 dumped more energy and rocked the jelly more.
That expansion and impact on the gel is very good out of the short barrel velocities. Good to know since I carry the hellcat with 124gr hst. These rounds are very much worth it I won’t settle for any less. Just had 3 50 round boxes come in today don’t want to have to hunt them down when I need them
Have you ever tried the 125gr JHP from Zero? They sell bulk and actually are located the county over from me. I have some 125JHP and was wanting to blind compare with someone on their results. I didn’t have any starting data but I have a pretty decent load using cfe pistol. Due to lack of data, it’d be nice to compare with rounds not made by me.
Recoil impulse more smooth with the 147, no sonic crack so its not as loud because its sub sonic (though still harmful noise level of course). 124 is however lighter for carry espeically if you carrying a double stacked gun, not much of a difference in single stack tho. Its also on average a bit cheaper typically by like 3-4 bucks a box. 147 does better over barrier especially with the double cannalure. Honestly a toss up. If you are shooting at 25 yards POI shifts with 147 by an inch or so, even more so if you regularly train with 115 cheapos.

I always went with 147’s for penetration, but 124’s when I was looking for velocity and expansion. Now, Goodness Tools, You Be The Judge !!! (Hey, I should coin that phrase , lol !!!). Thanks for ALL you Do !!!!!
Hard to go wrong either way with HST.😎👍
Notice the 147 has two cannelures and the 124 has one cannelure. The old style 147 HST's only had 1 cannelure but in 2017 Federal added the 2nd cannelure to the 147 HST to retard expansion which allows more penetration. @8:11 you can see what I'm referring to.
😎👍
I use Federal HSTs in the warmer , light clothing months and Underwood Defenders in the colder , thicker clothing months in EDC. After YEARS of research both on my own and MANY DOZENS of TH-cam videos - these two rounds are definitely the best and ONLY for me !!
😎👍
Whats the reasoning behind that? Is it that you think HST won't penetrate thick coats or jackets and into your target successfully?
@@GG_BEATSYes, what other reason would there be?
@@waholoopesorry74 to think a 147 won't penetrate some jackets is crazy and makes me think you don't know much about guns.
@@GG_BEATScould be the hollow tip has more chance to get clogged in all the thick clothing and act more like an FMJ where underwood has no opportunity to.
Thank you for providing this detailed information.
Cool video. Looks like excellent results from the HST bullets.
The HST 124 grn and the 147 grn as well as the sig v- crown is pretty much all I run in both pistol and carbine, absolutely love both of these rounds and no doubt they'd get the job done.
Everything holding together with the Carbine?? I have same, but haven't shot the Vs yet.
Didn’t think those 147s would expand as much as the 124s. Surprised me. Good info, thanks Tools.
I was kinda surprised myself from this short barrel. I think that shows just how good these rounds really are.👍
The 147s should expand more the the 124s I personally prefer the biggest slug I can get.
Great video, thanks. Also thanks for using a short barrel carry gun for your test pistol.
Thank you sir. I figure I may as well use what I think most people are carrying these days.😎👍
Thanks for a lot for this test. These are exactly the 2 rounds I'm trying to decide between to carry in my Sig P365XL!
Either one would do great I think.👍
Did you decide on one?
@@gino41 The 124gr for now. Sorry for the late reply.
I carry 147 g just to minimize over penetration. A bigger, heavier, slightly slower projectile impacting with more friction just makes more sense to me that it would stay in the target 🤔
😎👍
I keep the 124 HST in my Hellcat, and it is rarely out of arm's reach from me. Nice to see how they compare.
They're some of the best there is for sure.👍
I have loaded up my PPQ with them for home defense.
I carry the HST in 9mm .. .357 Sig and .40 S&W .. you’d be hard pressed to find another round this consistent.. and as readily available.. in 50 round boxes at that .. you got me wanting a Taurus now ..
HST's are fantastic rounds! This little Taurus is pretty doggone nice.👍
😎👊
Hst’s are the gold standard. I don’t even have to watch the video ( but of course I will) to know they will both expand nicely and penetrate as well. This is why all I carry in my pistols are hst’s. Regardless of caliber or barrel length you will get optimal results.
No doubt about it. They have never failed to impress in any of my tests.👍
Actually Speer Gold Dot is the gold standard, it's in their name!
@@rsbreeze it’s really not though. It’s a good round but inferior to the hst
@@jstud999 tell that to the FBI and many law enforcement agencies who do most of the extensive testing. They now use the Gol Dot G2. They have also used Hornady CD and Winchester PDX1 in the past.
HST is a great round made by Federal which also mfg Speer.
The reality is, perps only get so dead, then nothing else matters. They all work in that capacity.
@@rsbreeze I’m not trying to argue with you man. I go off of numbers, facts, and test. I’m denying the gold dot le is a good round but it’s not as consistent of a good performer as the hst
7:36 those peeling callouses look very familiar... This was a year ago and you are still with us so I trust all is well. I am currently taking Cabozantinib and my hands and feet are the same, best of luck👍
Thank the lord it wasn't that serious. It was actually a pretty bad burn from melting the ballistic gel. I had set the mold full of hot gel on the open oven door and when it started sliding off, I instinctively reached to grab it and that molten stuff went everywhere. Appreciate the comment though, and hope you keep hangin in there brother!😎👊
@@ToolsandTargets Glad to hear that is all it was👍
Thanks for showing this I use the 124 grain HST in my Glock 43X and the number 2 round I use is the bonded golden saber Plus P. I am wondering if the heavier bullet would be better in winter when the ballistic dummy would be wearing a heavy leather jacket.
5:15 so the weight bore no difference in the performance in the gel.
did one recoil any different? ive heard it said the 147 is "softer" feeling.
It's really hard for me to tell much recoil difference in these small micro 9mm guns unless it's some really hot +P or +P+.
@@ToolsandTargets , understood.
Awesome!!! The more info we have the better. You never disappoint tools. Thanks for the info.
Thank you sir!😎👊
Have you redone this test with the 4 layers of fabric yet. Would it even make that much of a difference? Trying to figure out which round would be best to go between a 3inch barrel and a 4inch. I'd also enjoy to see these rounds coming out of a carbine.
Appreciate the video. I have 2 boxes of 147 & 150 grain HST that I wanted to test thru my Taurus G3C. 124 grain shoots great thru it & my other handguns.
They would be just as good out of the G3C since it has a ltitle longer barrel. Appreciate you wtachin my friend.😎👊
Seems like V crown and HST are the top that I've seen. Now which is the best of the two?
V Crown chokes hard when it's put up against a clothing barrier. HST is far superior.
Fed did a great job of bullet design for sure. Hard to produce a single bullet design that seems relatively unaffected by bullet weight, velocity, barrel length, etc. Near picture perfect expansion. Great video! 👍
Thank you sir. They definitely knocked it out of the park with the HST's.
Thanks for comparison videos, both are good results, Tools thanks again.
They are definitely some of the best rounds tested so far.👍
I’m have/use hst 147 and it’s “matching” practice round. I would love to see a test where you target shoot with the two to see if they do actually match in performance and for zeroing
Really good test and a lot closer than I expected. The expansion is pretty impressive too. Great video!
Thank you sir. These HST's are just plain awesome rounds.
I run the 124gr. +P in the P365. Not because I needed +P, but because that was what was available. I grabbed two 50 round boxes at a dollar a shot.
They aint cheap but they're one of the best.👍
Another Great Jelly Test Tools the HST is one awesome Round Stay Safe Stay 2A Strong 🇺🇸
Thank you sir. Definitely one of the best.👍
The HST LINE of FEDERAL ammo is all I carry in my SHIELD PLUS 9mm, SHIELD 45 acp and my WALTHER PDP!!!
I have bought some SIG SAUER ELITE V-CROWNS 230 GR 45acp cause of price!!!!!
HST is fantastic stuff. V Crowns are right there with them in most tests I have done.👍
I have the 147gr, in my EDC. Thanks for doing this test. I was in my local shop the other day, and got excited to see HSTs in stock until I saw the price tag of $38.99! 🤬 HST is my favorite carry round but not paying $38.99.
Yeah, prices are crazy on these things right now.😣
Valid complaint but silver lining, it's better than not seeing any ammo on the shelves (:
@@james_saturn1998 True, not paying $40 for 20 HSTs. 2 years ago you get a 50 round box of those for near that price. I understand something like Liberty going for that price in the current market. I understand HST's going for $27 to $30 with current prices, however, 😆🤬$40 no way in hell I will pay that, nor should anyone else. Paying that over the top price for HSTs just encourages that B.S. price gouging, I understand $30 max in the current prices, $40 no way in hell unless you hate money.
@@TheProAer you can get 50rd box of hst right now for 40$ online
But online. I'm finding 50 round boxes of HST'S for $37 a box!!!!
I wonder if there's much of a difference between the 150gr and 147gr HST
I don't imagine there is.
There is a big difference, the 150gr are lame, trust me, I've watched a lot of tests on both.
The 124 has a little bit more energy, but the 147 has a little bit more momentum. Maybe there is a trade-off as you get further down range, but I would feel confident with either round.
Yessir. They both would get the job done for sure.👍
You do a great job on your videos and testing bro- keep up the great work, I’ll watch all of ‘em. Super helpful information. God Bless to you & yours!
Thank you sir. Really appreciate that.😎👊
I only use HST in my carry guns. 380, 9mm, 40, 357SIG & 45 & 38SPL.
So, Thank you so much for another awesome video! Blessings to you and your family always. PS I put HST's in all my guns.
Thank you sir.
I will say that your gun and ammo reviews is amongst the best right now on TH-cam. Keep up the good work Sir!
@@tobylopez445 Appreciate that!😎👍
Hst has got to be the best hollow point ever designed. I just switched from critical duty to hst since I get a first responder discount now.
Quick question TT... WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FEDERAL HST AND THE FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT HST... IM FINDING THE LAW ENFORCEMENT ROUNDS FOR HALF THE PRICE BUT THEY SAY ITS THE SAME ROUND... WHAT U THINK???
Thank you for using a GX4! We just bought two. So now the search for the perfect ammo begins!
This GX4 has been perfect so far.😎👍
You mean the search for the perfect ammo has ended!! HST is the creme de la creme !! Buy a box of both grains and see which one you shoot better and don't look back
Great video! I should be getting in my 147 grain 9mm tomorrow to carry in my Taurus G3C. I am usually a Hornady guy but these kept getting just great reviews so I had to try them out.
Thank you sir! Hard to beat some HST.
Both weights are a bit short of the magic dust. The 124 in particular should reach close to 1250 fps, the 147, 1150 fps
That HST is mucho impressive. You're gonna cause me to get some for my. 40 now. I've been using the Hydro- Shok for a while.
HST's are hard to beat without a doubt. I have a few calibers in Hydra Shoks that I need to test also.
I love the hydro shock deep rounds.
"It's HST jelly time, y'all" just ordered my first HST 147 and Speer Gold Dot 124's. I typically run Hornandy Critical Duty and Defense, but need some new blood, cuz those Hornandy's have been sitting in my mags for a number of years. Love the content!!! Southern Boy Science!!!
Appreciate ya! It's hard to go wrong with some HST.👍
Pretty impressive for a 3" barrel 🎉
I want to carry 147 but saw reliability concerns from people that say it should only be ran with a suppressor? Is there reliability issues with 147 grain hollow points just going through a Glock 19?
147gr for me. More mass to hit the threat with, softer kick for me. Sad I didn't buy more when it was $20/50rd box.
The good ol' days. 😣
In colder weather states bg wear heavier clothes vs summertime. Which should we carry in terms of weather?
I don't change ammo based on weather.
Another awesome test sir. Thats cool how they stacked right next to eachother.
Yeah, you couldn't have been any more identical than this.👍 Appreciate you brother!
Recently found these in 124 ,124+p and 147 for $28.50 for 50. I hadnt seen them on the shelves before now
I found them cheaper than that even.
I was curious to see how they behaved with a clothing barrier , maybe a second video on these ?
That expansion and impact on the gel is very good out of the short barrel velocities. Good to know since I carry the hellcat with 124gr hst. These rounds are very much worth it I won’t settle for any less. Just had 3 50 round boxes come in today don’t want to have to hunt them down when I need them
Nice
Do you remember how much you paid last year? They have 50ct for $33.99 locally now I’m just curious

Great video! Thanks for all your hard work! ❤️
Why don't you compare The plus p variant of this round in this chest
If you had to pic in between 124 vs 147 grain which would it be? Thank you
124 😎👍
Have you done this same test with the clothing barrier? I would really like to see it. Thank you 🙏
I don't think I have. Definitely one that needs an update.😎👍
I really appreciate your tests. You are the everyman of the gun world.
Thank you sir. I do what I can.😎👍
Perfect shot dude!!!
Good tests like always. I have always preferred the heavy 147 gr 9mm. I am just more confident with the heavier bullet.
Appreciate that.😎👊
so from 115 to 124 to 147. what would be the best shooting all from a 3 inch barrel. and what would be best shooting all from a 5 inch barrel
Any of them would do good but I'm a 124 fan from whatever the barrel length.
@@ToolsandTargets thank! ill keep that in mind
Ok weight didn't have any real difference so did 147 gr. Have any difference in felt recoil?
Minimal from what I can remember. It's honestly pretty difficult to tell anything about recoil difference from these little micro 9mm's.
I really appreciate your videos. They're very useful.
Appreciate that my friend!😎👊
