    • @Direblade11
      @Direblade11 2 ปีที่แล้ว +120

      Processed foods aren't processed for the express purpose of being more calorie-dense. They process raw, unprepared food into a food product that can be preserved for longer, or freeze better, or just be an alternative to cooking.
      If companies cared about calories, they would have put in work to produce food that doesn't make people obese.
      TL;DR Processing is a process and that's why your favourite candy bar is processed food.

      I don't think you do. Just because a meal is cooked, doesn't make it "processed". Stripping a food of nutrients, especially when harsh chemicals are used, is what makes it "processed".

      @@declaniii6324 Depends on the food, but if taking white rice as an example, it is brown rice that is milled and polished to make it white, which makes it taste better. By doing that you are also stripping away some of the nutrients. Even peeling a potato would classify it as "processed", as you are losing nutrients/vitamins found in the skin. I always eat potato with skin for that reason.

Or, specifically the type of malnourishment consisting of (usually multiple) deficiencies. You can lose weight eating 1500 calories a day of varied fresh whole food, or you can lose weight eating 1500 calories a day of rainbow Nerds. But one of those diets will likely make you a pretty unhealthy thin person lol 😂

    Counting calories was actually really helpful for me. I've been going to the gym for years but I hadn't been getting as big as I wanted to. Then I started to count how many calories I was eating in a day and found out it was between 2000 - 2500 in a normal day (even though I never really went hungry), when I should've been eating 3000 to gain weight. So now I count calories to make sure I eat enough to be able to build muscle, and it's really made a difference.
    I just saw a lot of comments recommending counting calories for losing weight so I thought I could also say that if you're looking to gain weight you can still use calorie counting to your benefit

    • @Pssst.ByTheWay
      @Pssst.ByTheWay 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah counting calories is really really good
      there is just no way around the basic fundamental truth of the universe that energy in versus energy out equals your body weight not your muscle mass but your body weight
      For things like that looking at the nutritional value of the food that your calories have enough proteins or minerals or vitamins et cetera is vital
      But there is no getting past that fundamental truth of energy in versus energy out
      The issue at hand is that the way calories in food stuffs is determined isn’t representative of why you want to know those values it’s not that the absolute calorie count is important but what your body can use so the issue isn’t with counting calories but how the calories for a human diet are determined
      Being aware of what you put in your body beat through counting calories or what ever just that general Awareness of providing your body with what it needs is absolutely admirable if your body burns a lot and you want to gain muscle mass then you might be going to the gym and working yourself to the bone but there simply aren’t the amino acid or calories in your body to facilitate any increase in muscle mass a.k.a. Which would also mean where does your body get the calories for the actual lifting process forget everything about building muscle mass it’s going to use up muscle mass just to get through the workout actually counter-productive
      The video itself isn’t bad video and if they had done it the way the Royal Society had done the videos why calories aren’t calories or why calories are being measured wrong it would’ve been a great video but to say counting calories is in any way not the greatest thing since sliced bread or toast it’s just fault I’m very disappointed

    I went for my yearly physical a few years ago and the scale said 302lb. It was shocking. I was never that heavy. So I changed what I eat and how much I eat. I stopped eating 3 big slices of pizza and started eating salads. You get the idea. But, I also limited myself to 1500 calories a day. Not pizza calories, but better calories. Beer didn't count, and I never let myself go hungry because it would push me over my daily quota. I dropped down to 202 in about 18 months, and I've been there ever since. I stick to the same diet because I know that if I go back to my old ways, I'll go back to my old size. I feel better about myself because I'm not 302, but also because I've managed to lose 100lbs and keep it off. So, for me, counting calories worked, and continues to work. But it wasn't just 1500 of the same calories as I used to eat. It was 1500 calories of new foods with lower fat and higher protein.

    I lost weight by counting calories but I also kept track of the macros because I knew that I ate way less protein than I needed and always overdid carbs.
    Now I’m just maintaining my weight at a level and it helps to know the calorific value of different foods to be able to eat more consciously, even though I’m not strictly counting it. It also helps in food preparation because you know that the little bit of extra oil you accidentally poured is actually a lot, fruit juices are not just “mostly water” because they’re actually quite sugary or maybe you could be grilling your sandwich with much less butter and make it crisp up just as well. That being said, it’s definitely not enough to just eat a “low calorie diet” if your goal is to be healthy.

      The whole point is, start with the traditional way of measuring calories, balance your nutrition requirement (RDA) and after all that, experiment with the amount of calories you need. Maybe take help from a professional (doc/dietician). You can always manage your calories, but first supervising your nutrition requirements is important.
      I assume, the point of the video was to tell the general public that just because your doc told you to eat 2k kcal, doesn’t mean you feast on that much hamburgers and expect to become fit. Fibres, mineral-vitamin RDA, and percent contribution of the energy nutrients i.e. carbs, proteins and fats is important. You can’t just cut all carbs or all proteins or all fats out. Diet is complex, in aim of regulating it, remember not to hurt yourself.

      As much as I have enjoyed this channels videos for years, there are some things where they get into the (not to be overly political but it unfortunately is) the "FAR Left" ways of thinking and some of the pseudo-science nonsense of it. This happens to be one of them. Yes there are some very complicated things when it comes to overall nutrition. But when you are dealing with the basics and trying to help someone who is overweight/obese you aren't going to get them to make positive changes if you bog them down with all the difficult stuff to start and more likely than not you will discourage them instead of reassuring them that they CAN make positive healthy changes in their lives. We in the States are surrounded in a culture that pretends to care about others but doesn't actually care enough to say something when it comes to actually helping people much of the time, we prefer to let them "live their lives the way they want" when it can do a great deal of physical and mental harm, the problem we have with obesity is a direct example of that, and unfortunately videos like this only give people more excuses to NOT make positive changes instead of helping with the most important starting factors like counting calories until you get to a healthy body fat % and THEN start worrying about the nutrients in everything you are eating. Counting calories not only teaches people how much they are eating, what they actually require in a day, what is in their foods they eat since they have to track them, but also helps build personal accountability when it comes to their eating. Yes it is a pain at times, but its one of the absolute best ways to begin the difficult journey into healthy lifestyle choices.
      Best of luck to you, I know it can be difficult, but you CAN do it.

      It would apply if our energy consumption was perfectly efficient and was the same for each calorie, but it’s a complicated biological process that involves energy loss in the form of heat, chemical transformations, and low percentages of energy absorption that vary wildly from food to food. It doesn’t matter that if lit on fire kale could produce a certain amount of energy if I’m just going to poop out most of that energy anyway. There are also microbes involved that have varying levels of efficiency-so if your gut is overrun by very efficient bacteria, you’ll retain a lot more of the food’s energy than someone with less efficient bacteria. Also, fat isn’t directly produced from excess “energy” but specifically excess sugar, so if you eat a bunch of oil (not recommended for other reasons) it will never get turned into fat. It’s biologically impossible. It will clog your arteries though which can lead to heart disease, but you’ll look great 😅.

      Yeah, same. In my opinion, something like calorie counting places an upper-bound maximum to the number of calories you can absorb. So if you need to eat 1200 Calories to lose 1 lb per week, then eating 1200 Calories will either get you there at exactly the pace you expected, OR FASTER. There is no way you can extract MORE than 1200 Calories out of food that literally only has 1200 Calories. Due to inefficiencies in your micro-biome though, you might be absorbing less. And if you're trying to lose weight...that's actually a good thing!

      How are you supposed to keep track of how many calories you get “out” precisely though? Isn’t a lot of it eliminated via waste/heat?I heard that if you eat something in excess it’s often just removed to maintain homeostasis (like when you drink more water you pee more). And what about getting the necessary vitamins, amino acids, lipids you need, or maintaining proper bacterial populations? It just seems overly simplistic to talk about calorie consumption when we don’t measure accurately the calorie “out” part since it’s processed differently. The current research heavily favors the “it’s not just how much you eat, but what you eat” concept of weight gain-if you’d like I can try and send you some peer-reviewed articles!

      @@alisakinzel4187 In a clinical setting you can measure your metabolic needs via direct or indirect calorimetry, or the doubly labeled water test. However, the common TDEE equations are estimates based on the aggregation of past results and the methodology of these tests. Some energy is lost in the form of heat sure, but this can be accounted for as well. Ideally if your body is functioning properly it should be able to absorb the nutrients needed in the food as it passes through your GI tract before it’s excreted. Vitamins are micronutrients, they have little to no caloric value. Amino acids are simply the building blocks that constitute proteins. A lipid is just another name for a dietary fat. Maintaining a healthy gut microbiome is most useful in the digestion of fiber and a healthy diet should take care of this on its own for the majority of the population. Much of the current research is misinterpreted, which is why I think you may not thoroughly grasp some of the basic concepts of Nutritional Science. From an epidemiological standpoint it can be useful to look at the trends of what is being eaten to make associations to the health of a given population. However, to say that because a person that eats fast food every day likely does not worry about how many calories they are actually taking in is not to say that the overabundance of energy in this person’s diet is not what’s making them overweight. Of course it is healthier to eat less processed food, but it does not have a direct 1:1 correlation w/ weight. Even so, causality ≠ correlation.

  • @RiskOdin
    @RiskOdin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +404

    I wouldn’t quite say it is a scam. Just like you stated it is much more complex than just the calorie number, the way someone would use counting them to their life is more than just “good “or bad.” If someone happens to be a person that is gaining weight due to the direct ingestion of more calories than they are using a day, figuring out what their maintenance calorie count would be so they can go into a deficit in order to lose weight if that’s what they desire, and vice versa for someone that has a hard time putting on weight so they can get bigger. There’s SO much more than just calories themselves, like your individual micro biome, the actual macronutrients you’re eating, and so much more, so the best thing to do before choosing whether or not to or not to count calories or whatever is figure out how these things work and what things will benefit you based on YOUR needs. Other than that, very informative video.

      I want to add to this, NEAT or non exercise activity thermogenesis, plays a big role in how high your 'metabolism' is. NEAT being things like how much your fidget or how expressive you are with your body when you talk. This all adds up over the course of a day. That alongside how much actual lean muscle tissue you carry, has an overall impact on your metabolism. It takes a lot more energy for muscle to exist than it does for fat. Two people of the same height, weight, ethnicity, hell even identical clone on the genetic level, would have different metabolisms both weighing 170 pounds if one was overweight but the other carried a larger quantity of muscle. The 170 pound person with more muscle would burn more calories than the overweight person at 170 pounds just by existing.
      So get up and be active, 150 minutes of moderate cardio a week which basically breaks down to go for a 23 minute walk everyday at the very least and do some resistance training to build a little muscle and increase your overall calorie expenditure.
      One important thing to remember though, you get healthy with exercise, you lose weight in the kitchen. Make sure you are eating adequate calories to maintain and make sure to eat in a slight caloric deficit to lose.

    EDIT: The original title of this video is "Calorie counting is a scam" enough backlash at least caused them to change the title...
    I dont know. I follow other science channels that claim the opposite, yet also have many sources. I've counted calories down to the exact amount and managed to lose 25+ pounds as intended when I was on Keto, and to have also gained 40 pounds as intended when I decided to bulk, eating more protein and also more carbs as well. My wife the same, she started bulking when lifting and went from 145 - 180 as intended over the year, logging calories each meal and weighing foods.. my father the same, he went from 290 - 200 in a year with very specific calorie counting. We have all been very honest when logging the calories, day in and day out, that's not something easy to do, but many people do it and just do not post about it online. I know a multitude of overweight people who I see eat not only garbage but a lot of it, try and break down exactly what a larger set person eats in a day and it's typically a lot.
    I do think there's a lot of truth to some of this information, but then again a messed up microbiome might mean depression, which could mean moving around less. Try eating a lot and not moving whatsoever, it'll cause obesity, you wont be using energy. There is a lot more to consider than one side to an argument in a 5 minute video.

      Yes calorie deficits work, but results vary from person to person (Sharon might lose 10 lbs in a month on the same exact calorie deficit as Melanie who loses 20lbs. They have different genetics, metabolic rates, risk factors, environmental conditions…etc). Essentially, a calorie deficit reflects your body in starvation mode. Your body can “survive” on 1500 calories a day but it is not thriving. It is conserving and burning fat when needed. Calorie deficits do not come without risks to your body. You lose both muscle and fat during a calorie deficit, and the fascia, connective tissues, and linings in organs also can begin to deteriorate in a 1000-1500 cal diet. Calorie deficits also have long-term affects on your body’s metabolic rate, making it much more difficult in the future to maintain the weight loss. Obesity is an extremely complex disease that is continuing to be researched in countries around the world, and generalized statements like this make it extremely difficult for people to get the help they need. Consider the science before you post next time!

    I have executive dysfunction (from ADHD) and a changing metabolism (thyroid disorder and PCOS) so not only is it hard for me to mentally process eating but the amount I need to eat on a daily basis is changeable. I found that as long as I keep food on hand, check in on my body through out the day, and eat in accordance to how hungry I am, I will get a high enough quantity of food to maintain my weight with the amount of activity that I did.

      Calorie counting for sure is important for people who really want to gain muscles or wanna lose weight. but especially when it comes to bodybuilding it‘s just as important what you eat. You cant gain muscles with eating 3000 cals only from carbs or fat. You need a surplus of cals from PROTEIN to gain muscles. Otherwise you just get fat. Same with weightloss. Of course you can eat 1500 kcals a day, 1/3 of them being sweets ir fastfood. You will lose weight, but it‘s not possible to keep your metabolism working properly despite of the deficit and get all you nutritions when you dont eat clean and healthy. You will lose muscles, your body functions will be on a lower level and your body will be less likely to burn fat. Weightloss will become harder and harder.

    Here are my thoughts based on what I have learned and viewing your video. First, counting calories will assure you that you do not get into a ‘weigh loss plateau.’ For 2 months I was frustrated after not being able to lose fat 6 months into my journey. A dietitian evaluated my meal plan and said “you are not eating enough” which dumbfounded my logic. So I increased my calorie intake by 400 more calories and the fat loss steadily picked up again for another 8 months and I plateau-d again but I ended up at my target weight loss of 100 lbs. At this point I increased my caloric intake by another 400 - 700 calories to maintain my weight of 185 and have done so for the past 8 months. Second, in order to make calories count, you need to eat the right foods, especially since it does not take that many calories to maintain weight let alone lose weight. Third, the key to weight loss and health management is you managing your hormones to ideal targets - your body is very efficient and storing or burning fat - you just need to turn on the burning fat path through managing your hormones (melatonin, IhG, insulin, leptin, ghrelin, glucagon, cortisol, etc.). There is no “perfect” diet or calorie number to managing your calories, but counting calories for me has allowed me to learn more about foods available so that when I do eat I maximize my nutritional benefit per calorie and helps me in assuring my daily macros are balanced out.

    • @NickaLah

      Absolute B.S., as far as preventing a weight loss plateau. I measured every bite I ate and adjusted my macros weekly, sometimes every day because I was obsessed with it and my whole family hit a stall after 8 months on keto. I lost 80 lbs, and just like that it wouldn't budge. I still have over 100 lbs to go, and tried everything to get the weight moving again, if you've heard of it, I've tried it. After being keto two years and giving every method a few weeks to work, I finally tried increasing my calories. I didn't start losing weight again, but even while gradually increasing my calories over 3 months and eating 2600 a day for some time after... I didn't gain anything, either. CICO might help some people, but everyone that it works out for needs to stop assuming everyone else is just more lazy than them. It's particularly frustrating watching people eat "dirty keto", get to their goal weight and then chastise everyone else that couldn't get beyond a plateau... while I'm doing everything by the book with strict keto.

    The bit about how gut bacteria can affect calorie intake is a great argument against fatphobia and the assumption that being fat is synonymous with overeating and being unhealthy. Our bodies literally just process food differently. That's why there are many people who have poor diets and don't exercise much if at all, but are still skinny. And why there are many others who have good diets and are physically active, but are still overweight. So we really need to stop shaming people for how their bodies look, thanks.

    Counting calories is by far the best and most simple way to lose weight. Simple does not mean easy, but this video is trying to conflate how you don't have to work or make choices or deal with the challenges that come from how difficult it can be to lose weight.
    Counting calories helps you link how your body feels, with the food you are consuming. You start to understand that 500 calories of pasta won't actually make you feel fuller longer, and that you'd do better to spread out those 500 calories across fruits, vegetables, proteins, and carbs. Once you start counting calories you'll realize that 400 calories of cereal isn't worth it. You'll realize that a 360 calorie soda doesn't provide enough enjoyment for what it costs your health. You'll learn to stop drinking your calories with high calorie fruit juices. You'll realize that 50 calories of candy is a great afternoon treat, but you don't need 300 calories of it to appreciate the enjoyment it brings. Counting calories helps you with portion size.
    Counting calories should be encouraged as a way to intelligently monitor the food you eat and help you change your relationship with food, and the choices you make, and to better understand how you want to feel on a daily basis. Counting calories is both a short term solution to feeling better each day by eating healthier, and a long term solution to achieve better health in a sustainable way.
    Anyone telling you to stop counting calories is more interested in telling you how easy and comfortable it is to change nothing about your life and your choices and get the results you want. Again, eating healthy and counting calories is simple to do, but it does take work and it can be difficult at times.

    So what’s “the biggest lie about calorie counting”? Surely, calorie estimates on labels are just that: estimates. We all metabolize food differently. And yes, the thermic effect of breaking down protein is higher than that of carbs and fat.
    However, I think it’s dishonest to not even mention in the video that weight loss and weight gain will always come down to calories in, calories out. It is a law of physics and there is no convincing me otherwise. You might not be eating the exact number of calories you think you are, but the bottom line is that weight change is a matter of energy balance.
    This doesn’t imply that health is only about calories. But the hard truth is that if you want to lose weight, you must eat less calories than your body burns, consistently, over weeks. This is why i calorie count, it holds me accountable in showing me a rough estimate of how much I’m really eating every day.

    • @seqka711
      @seqka711 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That and the microbiome of our parents influences the microbiome we're born with. It's all a lot more simple than this video makes it seem. Try writing down the food you eat, your weight, your poops and how you feel each day, and after a month or so, you'll have a pretty good idea of what your body does and doesn't struggle with absorbing.
      If you notice that every day you eat a certain amount of dairy, your poop is a bit softer, you probably have an issue with lactose. If you notice you feel bloated after eating bread or pasta, you may have an issue with gluten. If over the month, you gain weight, then you're eating too much. If you lose weight, you're eating too little.
      You'll also see over the course of the month which foods are your problem foods for caloric density vs nutrient density. For me, it was pasta. I noticed that I could eat a single slice of bread and stop there. But when I ate pasta, I ate a TON of pasta. Thus days I ate pasta I tended to be more bloated and went to the bathroom more. So now I try to limit my pasta intake. The internet says "cut carbs" but researching my own diet made me realize "I only really need to reduce my pasta, my other carb intakes are fine". So really, you can just research yourself and create the diet for you.

However, if you are a binge eater, depressed, anxious, or any other mental condition that predisposes you to obsessing about food, calorie counting can make that relationship with food so much worse. That's what some of us mean by doesn't "work", the relapse is huge. Those people in my experience respond better to learning what foods to eat that help them stay mentally sane while losing weight. Many of the people who are in good faith defending calorie counting imho are the ones who have been successful and don't mind doing that for the rest of their lives. Even people who are successful with it fall off the wagon because calories is a distraction from other obesogenic factors. What matters more is learning macros, hunger cues, emotional stability, avoiding processed foods and improving their hormonal profile and metabolic health. That is more long lasting without having to be tied to a metaphorical mental calculator forever.
      On a side note there are plenty of people who lost weight/mass but still have insulin resistance, fatty liver, inflammation from processed foods, increased cancer from constant eating even if under their TDEE. Skinny fat is a real medical condition. The quality of the calorie matters so much. Calorie counting to me is for someone who is a beginner and has never realized that a pizza slice is more calories than a chicken breast. It's just a starter kit, when that fails (90%) because of the emotional/mental or maybe even socioeconomic reasons that made them choose pizza even if they know it's more calories, they need therapy/support/coaching and not just counting.

    Calorie counting is a useful tool for people with binge/overeating problems :/

      I used to have a BMI of like 44, and got it down to 25.6 or something using calorie counting. Then 2020 happened and I'm back up to 40 or so, but I know how it works for me at least, so I can get it back down. It's very helpful to have that number as a tool! I'd be lost without it.

    No, its not a scam. Calories are still the main factor in weight gain/loss. Yes, sure, there are other factors, like the ones you described and even others ( the body consuming different amounts of energy through the day). But calories in/out is still the main reason, its the first thing to look at. not a scam, at all.

    After you establish your caloric consumption baseline, calorie counting works as a straightforward heuristic. Heuristics are useful for simplifying approaches to a complex problem. If we try to tackle the whole complex issue before taking the first step, that can lead to decision paralysis. Doing nothing is worse than taking a first step in the general right direction.

      You should take into account your macronutrient distribution. 15-25% fats, min # of protein grams depending on weight and goals, rest carbs. Then make sure to eat varied greens, or take micronutrient supplements as needed or recommended by dr.

    Ugghh, its definitely not. I am in full control of my weight ever since I started counting in 2013. Never too fat and never to thin again, perfectly athletic and its hard go back once it becomes second nature. Bad video.

      I'm hoping click bait like this doesn't screw over anyone's goals to better themselves. This video is dishonest and doesn't use many sources or consider many other factors. This video should be shamed. Stay healthy, stay curious and explore the nutrition science field. I hope we can all learn better due diligence.

    I’ve been a large advocate of CICO for a long time and it’s the only time I actually lose weight. I get that essentially all things are infinitely nuanced but in general, could it be assumed that the current calorie understanding is good within 10%?

      It's the only way people lose weight without surgery or some medical disorders.
      Your body can't store energy on a deficit.... it's literally impossible.
      What we have right now is 100% fine as long as you have a good round diet. Eating a deficit in butter alone won't be good for you, but you'll still lose weight.

    12 years ago, I started doing research on nutrition. In that process, I came across vegans that would eat four to five thousand calories a day. Your video summarizes nicely what I learned about how our bodies process calories.

    It is a little confusing but it does work if you do it right. I logged every single calorie and lost 111lb in a year. Best thing I ever did for myself 🥰 I didn’t stop eating the things I love either. I just ate less of it or ate healthier later to make up for it

    this is dumb, count calories works but should be not your only reference ... otherwise you could just live eating 1.5k calories of oreos every day...

    Good stuff. My mom was obese until she figured out she didn't gain when she predominantly ate a low carb high protein diet. I've found it is a great way for me to shed a few extra pounds whenever I need to. Indeed, everyone is different. You just gotta figure out what works best for you.
