      Yes it's sad truth. My best friend became addicted to counting calories. After some period of time she fell victim to bulimia and other mental disorders, cuz she wasn't able to eat anything without counting.

      Hi hello. I have been counting calories for over a year now and fell into this position. I simply am stuck and I try my hardest to get out of this mindset, I don’t enjoy food anymore and I’m afraid it won’t get better. I’ve had meals without counting calories before, but they end up turning into binges and it leads to me eating over 6 thousand calories. I regret it afterwards and it leads to me tracking again and again until I decide to do another day without counting. If I’m in a restaurant or let’s say the buffet, i have to ask the manager for a nutrition label of the food. It truly is hard to go back and i should have taken note of this before starting calories.
      I don’t have the best grammar or spelling

      My guess it’s just a bunch of people that are making excuses on why they’re fat and can’t count calories
      Fact is I find counting calories fun because you get the detail your day around what meals you want. But for some people are only concerned about getting that number lowered and that’s where they get eating disorders
      Slow and steady can win the race! Just eat clean. Eat enough and be smart

      Rory Lennon Well you just put the food on the scale, like for example meat is measured in oz, if you don’t know how meat is 1 oz the scale can tell you.

      grace yeah I have an ED but it’s not a community. Or it shouldn’t be in my opinion. Maybe the recovery community would be a nicer term. But that’s just my 2 cents because “Ed community” makes it seem like it’s an acceptable thing or something that brings people together

      Im a binger-eater but that's what i was thinking. What if someone in recovery watches this. How are you doing btw? What are your wins and hardships?
      I had a couple of wins. I am trying to start exercising consistently in moderation and limit my intake while trying to avoid a binge attack.

    I started counting calories a year ago when I was 12 and developed disordered eating. I lost 35 pounds when I was already at my healthy weight. Just don't let it become an obsession because it takes away how you see food, please be safe guys, we love you.
    (I've so far gained 10 pounds back, yay! I can safely eat ice cream for lunch and have snacks! But I still see every calorie, and am still trying to stop, be safe frens)

      I was obese for almost all of my life. Learning how to track calories saved my life. I lost about 80lbs so far and eyeballing everthing helps me control my binge eating disorder. Just gotta find what works for you ;)

      I have to track because otherwise I end up having eaten a days worth of calories and then dinner in junk and neglected the actual food my body needs to be healthy. Which had wrecked my metabolic health. And my gut health. And I feel so much better have an actual record that I can go back and see what I did and the effect it had on my body.

    I found counting calories as I go to be overwhelming so I started making menus for the week over the weekend with my target calories planned out for each day. It’s a real game changer not having to look at numbers everyday.

    I've been counting calories for over a year now, it's pretty automatic as you get used to it, don't have to weight and scan everything anymore. Oh and it helped me lose 80lbs and get in shape :)

      I think the best way to approach it is to be informed, know what's super energy filling, know how much you need, and leave it at that.
      Personally I find after I started learning calorie counts I've started really liking a much bigger variety of food, and more complicated flavours. Just helps that it's good for you too!

      I'd argue it's better than being overweight. Tracking calories gives you great insight and knowledge, I've been doing it consistently for quite a while now. After some time, you don't even have to track anymore since you can eyeball every food quite well and know what's in the foods you eat.

      Counting calories is important for learning to speak your bodies language. If you can compare how you body feels with what you put into your body you can start to understand what it is saying. Its important to learn what 2,000 calories feels like. And its important to know how many calories you ate on a day when you ate a lot. Ideally you could drop the counting once you knew your body well but theres no harm in keeping track.

      @@Cowboydjrobot Agreed, I do it now when I cut. Some may get anxious if they don't have a scale at hand, that's why it is important to establish that mind-body connection. Counting helps to choose right foods as well.

      You should do both - counting calories/macros can be correlated to how your body feels, and can be adjusted BASED on that. My diet, calories/macros, HIGHLY affects the way my body feels, so I use those cues to adjust my diet.

Where I see things becoming dangerous is when people eat/drink something really unhealthy, like alcohol, and then want to eat half as much to compensate... or binge and skip multiple meals to compensate (maybe even the next day), or, in the worst-case scenarios, binge and then purge.

      @@darkengine5931 i do all those things! but i’ve been much better these days, i haven’t purged in long time, i don’t have guilt after eating, i’ve stopped counting calories of everything. i just eat what i want to and i exercise (chloe ting) and i’ve started seeing results which i didn’t when i was in the toxic binge-purge-restrict cycle!

      @@kay-wj3jx Very happy to hear that! What I do now that works for me (now in my 40s) is that I just go for relatively lower-calorie foods, like a boiled chicken breast instead of fried chicken, I've cut out my sugary/creamy coffee (now take it black), I use a low-oil vinegarette and ginger dressing now instead of calorie-dense dressing like ranch, etc. There is still awareness in the back of my mind of how much calories/macros are in everything, relatively speaking, but I don't measure and don't try to hit a precise caloric/macro target. I replaced the measuring and precision stuff more with going by feel.
      I think working out is really helpful too not just for the health and strength and skill but also the relationship with food. When I'm sedentary I tend to see food as a source of satisfying boredom/pleasure/stress relief. When I'm active and training it's easier to see it like fuel. I also notice the difference in quality more when I train. If I just sit around all day and eat junk, I won't feel the difference so much. But if I eat a lot of junk and have to train after, I'll not only feel awful but I'll notice my performance decreasing (not being able to run as fast, lift as heavy, etc).

      Likewise! It started off as a healthy, normal tracking to try and get healthier, but then it spiralled and before I had even realised, I'd dropped 3 Stone and was hospitalized. It's so important to stay aware of these kinds of behaviors to make sure they don't get out of hand!

      What I see very commonly in many people trying to lose weight with it is not purging after a binge but skipping meals sometimes for a whole day to try to make up for the binge. That's probably almost as bad as purging.

      I agree, i stopped doing it after a few months because it really messed up my relationship with food. Whenever i'd eat too much I would be really guilty and start eating everything i'd get my hands on. I didn't even feel the taste anymore, just the feeling of food sliding down my throat. I stopped it a year ago and I have a lot healthier mindset. My relationship with food is back to normal too. But I'm afraid to go back to it and i don't feel I will for now.

    you literally had a guy explain the difference between "good" calories and "bad" calories (what he referred to as composition in his analogy) and then went on the whole video to say their aren't good or bad calories. just because a calorie is a unity of measurement doesn't mean it can't have qualitatives values attached to it. For instance, if you're training for a marathon, running a "good" mile would mean you kept up with your desired pace, running a "bad" mile would mean you jogged or walked. They're both a mile, but only one truly helps you move towards your goal.
    Not all calories are equally nutritious, fattening or satiating.

      The idea I think he's trying to communicate is, at least in terms of weight-loss or weight management, calories are equal. If I personally eat 2,000 calories a day of literally anything, i'll lose weight. Doesn't matter if it's mcdonald's and twinkies, I will lose weight. Point being, the calorie itself is NOT a measure of the health of a food. It simply measures the amount of energy it contains. So you can have good and bad food, but not necessarily good or bad 'calories'.

      Skylar Kesselring this is also wrong though, not all calories are equally fattening. 1000 calories of brownie is not the same as a 1000 calories of broccoli, mostly because of insulin response. Also, 2000 calories eaten in a 4 hour window will fatten you less than 2000 calories eaten in a 16 hour window. Calories are just a unit of measurement for physical energy, but our body works on sugars, proteins, fats, etc. not calories!

      However it's aggregate calories over the day, so yes, eating a highly calorific meal in a short time would likely cause the body to store it, however if you still burn 2500 a day, that extra 500 calories will have to come from somewhere, I.e stored fat. All calories are equal in terms of energy in = energy out, you can't nutrition out Thermodynamics.

      @@several. Measurably untrue. Different people burn different nutrients at different rates. A calorie of carbohydrates may be processed differently by me than you, by me in the morning than by me in the afternoon, by me if it also came with a calorie of fat or if it came alone, etc and so forth for a literally endless array of individual variables. I don't know where we got this idea that a calorie is a calorie - clearly, a 50kg woman uses ingested energy in a different way and at a different rate than a 120kg body builder. A calorie is a measure of how long a food takes to incinerate - when our bodies are doing the incinerating, there's clearly differences in the efficiencies and function of the incineration process!

      If you have an eating disorder, you should take care of that first with therapy and self care. Its like walking around with a bleeding leg, your not going to make it very far if every step you take is in agony.

More people die to underlying diseases caused by obesity far more than anorexia. Which I'd also like to say anorexic people can benefit from counting calories as well because keeping track of consumption isn't only propitious for people trying to lose weight it's also essential to gain weight. So I don't understand your point. Being conscious of what you consume isn't the reason why people have "eating disorders" or whatever that means. What is the issue is either a lack of discipline, priorities, or education on the matter.

    For me calorie counting is great, and it really works for me. I am losing weight and I started thinking about how I eat and what I eat.
    But for some people it is really bad. And it depends on how your mindset is.

      A big difference I see is how someone responds to a slip-up. For example, say someone goes 1500kcal overboard on their Birthday party. If they try not to do it again but don't try to compensate for it the next day, I think that is healthy. If they try to compensate though and skip meals the following days or do excessive cardio, that's when things start to become quite damaging for long-term mental and physical health.

      @@darkengine5931 Exactly. For example, if I slip, at a birthday or so, I don’t skip meals or so the next day. Because that will turn into a bad habit. And nothing is wrong with eating a little bit to much, some times a year. Just not to often.
      But if you count calories you will realize soon, that if you do it properly, you don’t want to overeat anymore. You’ll learn to know when you are full.

      ​@@IWantToStayAtYourHouse For a day is not so bad IMO and I think there might even be some benefits for many people in reducing the time window in which they eat (or the number of meals a day).
      The most worrying cases I saw were women who set themselves a very small budget, like 1200kcal/day to reach a hypocaloric level. Then on like a 3000+kcal special occasion which is easy to do dining out, they're skipping meals for 3+ days in a row and eating absolutely nothing at all.
      Another case I saw that was worrying involved a lot of alcohol on top of a low budget, so the girl sometimes drank a whole bottle of wine early in the day or more and so she ate almost nothing (had only like 100-300 calories remaining). That was recurring so that combination of eating almost nothing and drinking all the calories in alcohol repeatedly seemed like an invitation for long-term liver and kidney problems.

    Starting to count calories and macros was equally the best thing for my fitness and the absolute worst thing for my mental health and relationship with food. I feel like I was probably happier being a little thick and eating the food that I loved than I am now being thin and shying away from some of my favorites because "I don't want to expend the calories."

There's definitely a balance that is healthy, when I *first* started counting (and now that I've started again), the balance was good because I knew I was working towards my goal and it wasn't an obsessive thing. Now I can count and feel good, but I also forgive myself for going over and enjoying my life whereas before I would feel like I had done something almost morally wrong, like I would equate going over calories to me being a lazy pos who couldn't do anything right. Now that I'm older and hopefully wiser, I feel like I now understand that we're not delivering a perfect body to the grave anyway, and that if I eat well and take care of my body the majority of the time I don't have to worry about the times I choose to enjoy myself.

    I currently count calories for college wrestling and I've been doing this for 3 years for half of the year. I want to warn people that if you get to far into counting calories, or macro nutrients such as fats and proteins, you can develop a very unhappy and unsafe relationship with food. Now, I'm no food expert but I've read hundreds of articles and watched 100s of hours of food related youtube videos because I was so obsessed with eating the exact foods that would make me the healthiest or make me lose weight. This may sound good! But the truth is I wish I could eat a donut without immediately feeling so shameful that I just want to go run 3 miles. Remember to let yourself have a poptart or two every so often, then get right back on track!!

      I have been counting calories for over a year now and fell into this position. I simply am stuck and I try my hardest to get out of this mindset, I don’t enjoy food anymore and I’m afraid it won’t get better. I’ve had meals without counting calories before, but they end up turning into binges and it leads to me eating over 6 thousand calories. I regret it afterwards and it leads to me tracking again and again until I decide to do another day without counting. If I’m in a restaurant or let’s say the buffet, i have to ask the manager for a nutrition label of the food. It truly is hard to go back and i should have taken note of this before starting calories.

      I don't understand, just workout for a year, build some muscle, some tendon strength and you'll be able to handle 2-3k calories a day easily. I eat a fck ton and still maintain a kinda lean physique. If I didn't binge eat I could easily get to 13% BF with 2.5k calories a day. You don't have to eat like a bird if you do it right

    Calorie counting is a good way to get a grasp of what your body needs. It helps you to get an idea of what you're really eating, but after a few weeks, it isn't necessary since you're accustomed to knowing what you're putting in your body. It's not healthy to obsess over it, figure out how to listen to your body!

    It’s interesting to see their point of view, how it makes them want to eat better. The only thing I think is essential to add to it is that if you have ever dealt / are currently dealing with an eating disorder, counting calories is probably something to steer clear of.
    When you have a normal relationship with food it may not cause any harm.
    However, if you don’t it can trigger new disorders or make you relapse very quickly.
    Be it anorexia, bulimia, overeating or any of the countless disorders there are... they are a very real and very serious issue.

    You can’t measure peanut butter with a spoon like that. If you want an accurate measurement you have to weigh the peanut butter. You will shit your pants when you see what an actual tablespoon (15g) is. Your spoon, I’m guessing, was about 2.5 table spoons.
    Same for the oil.

      Yup, I eat 32 grams of all natural organic peanut butter daily to include with my healthy fats. Definitely have to weigh it out each time for an accurate calorie count.

    If you’re not educated or if you have a bad relationship with food it may not be a good fit for you. But everyone is different

    I’ve started counting my calories over the last several weeks, and its helped me identify some bad eating habits like excessive snacking. I’ve started to lose some weight, and Ive made sure that I don’t go over my daily limit. I’m still able to eat enough to be satisfied, but I’m not taking in excess calories. Also, having to count calories makes snacking a chore, which helps discourage the behavior.

      @@samsam060402 i was younger and really insecure about my weight back than even tho i'm naturally skinny, but when i saw the numbers i always thought it was too high and i tried to reduce it on the next day. But I'm a lot better now only a few things tend to kind of trigger me and i start shaking or crying but when i calm down again it's ok. I just wanted to say it because there are a lot of people will watch this video and think it's a good idea, but for some maybe it isn't.

      t s ó l a r i a i started tracking calories on june, together with weighing myself with a balance that sais also the body composition, was and am a fit guy (short, very short, but still pretty fit after 2 years of gym) but wantedo to get a bit more shredded, it got me really hard at the point that I couldn’t stand eating less anymore and regained the weight I lost in 2 month in like a week.
      Btw in the period i was counting calories I went to the gym 6 days a week just to burn more calories so I could lean more and more.
      That shit really messes you up idk why, I want to keep track of them, but can’t really, it’s way to powerful of a tool, you have to learn how to use it i think like it that way. (I think this matters only in losing weight if you are already kind of fit (am around 13%bf rn and I had to eat like less than 1200kcal a day to lose weight) I think overweight people should just track calories until they get to a healthy body

      R5 Zoeira BR I don’t think this video is wrong, it is promoting a healthy lifestyle, however what I would suggest is that he also includes a warning saying that people should be careful and to never go below a certain calorie count that is essential for living.
      Although I agree with you too, it is a very dangerous video for those who are unhappy with their weight

      I also got a binge eating disorder!! Specially when I had 'Cheat days'.... Oh my I would never stop eating. Till I got back to my regular counting calories diet.
      I realized that I was eating 1300 calories and as a Male at 150Lbs I'm pretty sure i was starving myself too much...

    I love counting my calories, with healthy mindset, it can help you stay in shape, no jojo, and eating healthy is a must. So overall i have finally control in what i eat + IF, i feel great. And i stay in shape this way. Because i struggled a lot with diets and jojo effect. Thanks for the video:)

    Great points raised here. Whenever someone asks about how to lose/gain weight, I tell em to track.
    One thing however, is that tracking can become obsessive, and cause burnout( i'm on month 5 of a bodybuilding prep, and I want to pull my hair out some days), so rather than mindlessly tracking, it's important to eat with intention and understand what you're putting into your body, like Matt said. Great video.

    I counted my calories with My Fitness Pal for a month or so too once, and it WAS life-changing. I recommend it too.
    EDIT: After seeing all the other comments I want to add this: I can't speak for anyone with an eating disorder, but as someone who tends to compulsively eat, seeing that, by eating a whole thing of cookies, I was eating half my daily calories and about a million grams of sugar (jk)...was actually helpful for me. I still eat junk (I ate a donut today), but I now have the insight to think, "Maybe just one, though..."
    Before, I knew junk food was crappy, but I had no sense of my sugar intake, for example, at all. Now I do. And it feels good.
    I stopped calorie counting because it got hard and boring, but I'm glad I did it, and I may return to it if I feel like I'm over-indulging too much again. That pause/space between food and mouth really helped me.

      Yes it was life changing for me too. I'm not counting anymore for the most part but now i can estimate pretty accurately the amount of calories I'm eating just by looking at a meal and it's such a useful skill because it helps me maintain my weight

      Same experience for me. I count my calories even now,calorie counting isn't just counting the number of calories and starving yourself. I am currently bulking and make sure I don't eat more than 100cal excess per day. It doesn't make you anorexic,just aware of the food you're eating. Also if you're counting calories and fit in junk foods,you wont feel guilty about it and in that way it leads to not eating less or binge eating.

      @@juicysatsumabeauty be serious. most of us grew up seeing people eat sht all the time and zero education in nutrition, at home or school. I'd get served portions as big as my 6 ft dad and get beaten up if i didn't eat, i was 7. this was my "education" in terms of nutrition. and the more you eat, the fatter you get the more your body sends you signals that it's hungry. my experience is a bit extreme but it still applies to most people in some ways. moms tend to overfeed children, if you can't eat anymore people pester you, holidays are almost always about food, everything is about food. so no wonder people don't know that eating a whole pack of chips isn't what they should do.

    I did the calorie counting with the "lose it!" App and went from 142 all the way down to 128 pounds :) I did lose a pound and half a week for my schedule. Now, I just use the app to make sure I don't overeat and it helps me maintain my weight.

    I don't think counting calories is inherently harmful, BUT as many people have pointed out, it can promote eating disorders. I know that the times I've tried to count calories, it has led to negative thought patterns and just general unhappiness, as I've started to obsess over my body and nutrition.
    I think the same effect (awareness of what you're putting into your body) can be achieved by a food journal, without the danger of obsessing over numbers. Yes, maybe you don't get the same detail, but there's much less risk of harm.
    Regardless, this is a good video, as usual. I'm happy that it worked for you, I just don't think it will for many.

      Lu na On the flip side, it’s fair to point out that counting calories can also be very freeing.
      Let’s say I’ve only eaten 500 calories of my total 2000 for the day. That burger, milk shake, and fries I’m going to consume later for my other 1500? I’m going to feel absolutely guilt free, which is an awesome feeling.
      Different approaches work for different people, but even a rough estimation of how many calories of we burn and consume on a day to day is helpful IMO.
      For me, I don’t track every calorie because it’s a pain in the ass, even with great apps like MyFitnessPal.
      What I do is take a quick look at my main ingredients nutrition in a dish I’m making and estimate how many calories. For example, I just roughly estimate a meal is between 400-600 cals without actually tracking everything.
      Then I use the scale as a second indicator every couple of days. I’ll hop on before eating for the day and if I’m up or down a couple pounds from the last time I weighed I’ll either it less or more with the example above.
      It may be weird, but it has helped me get to a body composition I’m proud of after being obese in high school.

      the issue with this though as someone with an eating disorder is many many things trigger eating disorders and very often the "diet" gets blamed however this is just often a symptom for a bigger issue at hand, i see so many people blame my previous diets for my eating disorder.. but really, its much deeper than that and whilst diets and counting calories may contribute towards an eating disorder, so does social media in general, break ups, family issues, school stress and other day to day life stress. I think focusing too much on the sympton of an eating disorder takes away from a true mental health epidemic.

      Why not? It's literally the most important macro though. Weight doesn't matter as much as body composition. Low body fat high muscle mass is ideal, and protein aids in muscle health greatly.

But for some people, a snack between the main meals is important to maintain stable bloodsugar and energy throughout the day, but of course then you should eat something nutritious and healthy (so not a bag of chips for example), but of course everyone's different and should eat what and when it is good for them :)

      The nutrition label tells you how large a single serving actually is - usually it’ll say something like “1/2 cup” or “8 ounces” or “60 grams”.
      I recommend buying some measuring cups, some tablespoon or teaspoon measurement tools, and a food scale.
      Ounces (oz) and grams (g) are weight. Cups, tablespoons (tbsp) , and teaspoons (tsp) are portion sizes.
      I struggled w/ it a lot at first too, I hope this is helpful!!

      I dont measure my food. Just eyeball it. It works for me. Give or take 100 call doesn't hurt me (I use calorie counter app- so much quicker than measuring)

    3 years ago for 4 months I’ve been counting calories every day so I can lose weight, I got so obsessed with the results, that I saw clearly from week to week, that I was starting to cut my calories more off, to the point where I ate 25% of the calories I burned and was proud of it. It took me 1,5 year till I could look at food again without seeing the calories. It’s important to learn, how much you really eat, but it can be really dangerous and addictive. „Once you learn it, you can’t unknow it.”
