And USA now has some veterans, as well as amazing new talent, and will do it again!! It's kind of cool seeing the newer, younger gymnasts combining the difficulty, but elegance and awesome combos. I'm mesmerized by how sharp and precise her technique is and her quick movements. I don't watch gymnastics as often as i used to but i don't Renner seeing anyone perform this way. Simone Biles Gabby Douglas and Katelyn Ohashi are no doubt some of the most talented and hard working gymnasts, they deserve all the praise and hype
my favorite floor routine from rio for sure!!! she totally brings the fire. that stupid 2 per country rule man. the best should be allowed to compete no matter what country they are from. i think it would have been simone aly and then laurie if she cleaned up her landings a little bit. that’s if she was allowed in. just my opinion tho.
Well US was among the countries who got behind the 2 per country rule because of Soviet Union's domination during 70s. And now you want reversal, then when Russia/China or any other nation's team eclipses US they'll cry again. The rule might not be the best, I agree but it does ensure that other countries have chances to win at least win one medal instead of one country sweeping all, and making it a snooze fest of a competition.
Every time I see this routine it makes me mad that she didn't make the finals. I think the coaches let her down on this one. Once they realized how well she was doing they should have increased the difficulty to get her a higher D score. That front tuck at the end of the 3rd pass could have been converted to a front layout (actually the punch front layout could have had a twist but I think that would have been a harder upgrade to train). Right before the 4th pass that full turn could have been a double (only turn in the routine, btw), and her final pass could have been converted from a double tuck to a double pike. I don't think anyone could be a contender for an Olympic floor exercise final in 2016 with a final pass being a basic back double tuck. I don't know if a few more tenths in the D score would have allowed her to pass up Ally or if anything would have really changed in the long run. I sincerely hope she comes back to elite gymnastics, but it's already 2018 and it looks like maybe she's not. Simone is already training, and I think going back to training just a year before the 2020 Olympics is not enough--we saw Nastia crash and burn with that strategy.
Candace B The thing is none of those upgrades would have raised her d-score. She already has a front layout in her routine, so a second wouldn’t get any cv. A double turn is only a B so still wouldn’t have been counted, and a double pike is worth the same as a double back. I think it was best to keep it simple and focus on her execution because she would have had to upgrade so much to have a hope of catching Raisman (who I think had a 6.1 to Laurie’s 5.6? But I’m doing these scores off the top of my head so I could be wrong)
It's a pity they chose Douglas to AA instead of her. I mean, it was the best decision for the team, since they needed a second UB worker for EF alongside Kocian, so Douglas was the name, but Laurie lost the chance to fight for the AA final. She had a 6.4 UB ready, with around 15.250 she would outscore Raisman and go to final alongside Simone.
She never competed this again. She didn't qualify to AA or FX finals. Simone and Aly beat her in both events. Her BB routine that got her silver is the last time she would compete in gymnastics.
Hard to believe she's just 16 years old 😱 so young, still just a little girl really, yet so mature and an incredible talent! X
