I think when people think of sports traditionally, they either think of team sports (basketball, soccer, baseball, etc) or sports where scoring is dependent on a points-based system (tennis, golf, etc). Or perhaps, like with track or swimming, who gets somewhere faster.
With sports like gymnastics, diving, or figure skating, people may have a hard time associating it with sport because it’s about executing a skill to the highest possible degree to as much as your routine would allow. I remember watching figure skating with my dad and he was so confused as to what was being graded or what made a routine “better,” while with something like a race or archery, it’s a lot more intuitive.

I did gym when I was about 6 or 7 until I was 9. Then I got bored of it and only joined back when I was 11. I really regret the couple years of training and missed and always think of the skills I could have gotten in that time, but I’m living in the moment and glad to be doing it now. I’ve now been doing it for a year and am really enjoying this.

It comes down to your definition of "sport." If a sport is a competition that requires athleticism, then a dance competition would fit that definition. Some people define a sport as having two or more opposing sides competing in a physical activity trying to gain or lose (golf) the most points to win. Is the 100 meter dash a sport? Or is it a race? Different interpretations of the language would give you different answers.

Because people aren't aware of why gymnastics or artistic-sports are sports.
Gymnastics is a sport because it has a code of points, standardised scoring system and composition requirements (which are objective elements to be showcased in each exercise).
But the problem is that far too few gymnasts, fans of the sport and seemingly even coaches are aware of the above, when questioned they all have different answers and the majority of them are incorrect. Meaning that if even those involved can't explain why gymnastics is a sport, of course those who aren't who think of it as being.
Sports are sports because of their formats, and the format above is the format of all artistic-sports.

I'd like to add to your response about starting gymnastics later in life.
First I want to make it extremely clear that I have never been an olympic or even elite gymnast, but I was quite an accomplished gymnast specializing in floor exercise for 20 years after STARTING gymnastics when I turned 21. Yes, I did gymnastics until I was 41! And I'm talking about powerful tumbling, not the wimpy "careful" tumbling one might picture of an "older" person. I did gymnastics entirely for the fun and fitness that it provided me...and it was INCREDIBLY fun!
Now, at 65 I still dabble in gymnastics occasionally, but only on the more forgiving tumbling trampolines.
So, anyone can start gymnastics at virtually any age for fun and fitness, but to make it into the elite or olympic categories, I would agree that one should start very young.

Definitely my favorite gymnast in the world. Besides being a legend at her sport, she competes with herself and not other gymnasts. I love that quality.

Anyone who says gymnastics isn’t a sport, is crazy!!! Y’all are stronger both physically and mentally than most sports. You also train more and harder than say football.

If you see the muscles and then see just 1 flip or tumbling pass - definitely athletic, and they compete, so therefore it's a sport!

@David Montgomery yeah I get some of it is objective in gymnastics. but gymnastics is based on level and technique. I don’t see how it could be in the same category as something like dancing that people commonly don’t see as a sport

4:14 I think the same happens with swimmers due to a lot of training especially in the upper body boys and girls get pretty beef compared to other athletes in other sports. Like I remember at 13 my back was so big and strong that a lot of my classmates will make fun of.
