Cant imagine the feeling of loss Rob, fishing is a great spiritual workout and always good for mental wellbeing. Get back out there as soon as you can.
A fitting epitaph for Karla, Rob. Your comment ‘such is the fleeting nature of life’ sums it up. I’ve had several riverside companions over the years (all red setters) and when they die, I vow to not get another and then a few months later I find myself taking on another pup! I hope you’re not too offended if I tell you, I had this unbelievably good setter called Snoop who went every where with me, a true companion and when his heart was giving out, I brought him to the vet and she injected him as I held him. There was a minutes silence as he drifted on to the great hunting ground and then she turned round to me and asked did I want the Silver, Gold or Platinum cremation plan for him (80,150 & 300 respectively) - the Silver he’d be cremated with all the other dead pets, the Gold on his own and the Platinum you get a little personalised urn with the ashes. I thought about it and told her - he was a simple dog who loved company so he’d have chosen the Silver 😂 (for f**k sake!) Anyway glad to see you back and looking forward to more videos. It’s been a decent Grilse run in the west of Ireland this year (legacy of 2020 Covid) maybe you might make it over in the next few years and we’ll get you some good fishing with a bit of luck. Talk again and thanks Rob! Niall
Hi Niall, I'm sure Snoop wouldn't hold it against you. I'm definitely holding off getting a new sidekick for a while yet. It's allowing to fish places where i couldnt before and without feeling guilty for leaving Karla in the van. I'd love to come over next summer for a couple of weeks and really have the full Irish experience. Glad there are a few fish about for you. It's been pretty good here this year with more salmon than seatrout for a change.
Understandable Rob - good to fish the places that don’t allow dogs before you commit to another! It’ll be a long winter but you let me know when you want do the Giro d’Irelande and we will try and organize sone good fishing, a few nice beers and plenty of fun! In the meantime- catch loads of autumn fish and keep the videos going. N
It's ok it's not a misty eyed montage of Karla looking her best in sync with the Watership Down soundtrack. I couldn't do that to myself! As you know it takes a bit of getting used to fishing solo but it is what it is. Any joy on the Coquet?
I got there in the end. Great that you've got the memories. Nowt on the Coquet for me. Been about 8 times... Hit Hury reservoir today. Wild wind, but 13 good fish to the net. The only place where rainbow trout actually take line off the reel when you hook them.
I've really enjoyed watching your fishing videos thanks for sharing. Started my salmon fishing journey this season on my local river. watching your videos conditioned me for the long-haul. I've been lucky and landed 5 out 9 hooked so far. Sorry to here about your dog. I hope you continue to fish in the future and record your journey.
Love your ways pal, haven’t seen the end of this yet but obviously not good. The connection with a dog is amazing…..best friend when he was alive was Benjy my rough haired Jack Russel, take care pal x
Cheers, yes it's terrible to lose your sidekick. I've had a good few dogs over the years but Karla was the biggest loss. C'est la vie sadly but its better to have loved and lost as they say.
As someone that's lost their fishing buddy, it's good to see you posting videos again. Karla had a great life going interesting places on fishing trips with her bast pal.
With the fortune of also having a bank buddy, I sympathise with you greatly....even on the toughest 'no touch days' they bring it all into perspective. I, like many, have been anticipating your return of what are some of the most beautiful systems in our country. Big love and many thanks to you bud....p.s please keep them coming, river levels are quite disheartening in Cornwall...!!
Many thanks Will I'm glad you enjoy the videos. I'm lucky to have so many rivers near by but saying that Cornwall certainly has it's own attractions if not perhaps an abundance of salmon any more.
Really really sorry to hear this mate, have absolutely loved watching your videos with the pair of you out together! Inspired me to get out fishing for salmon! Keep your head up mate you made her life amazing and should be proud of that! Tight lines and please keep making videos as I know lots of us love seeing them! All the best!
Thanks Michael, plenty more videos to come. I had a few weeks off from fishing as it just didn't feel the same but am backing the swing now. If only it would rain though.
Gutted to hear the sad news! You both created wonderful memories for all who watched your videos. You only have to see the look in Karlas eyes when she was with you to know how much she loved being with you.
Lovely river, the W/A. We have access thru our TAS association so I hope to get back there next year. A good idea to alternate with the trout fishing, it gets very demoralising when you blank trip after trip! I'm very sorry to hear about Karla, a very lovely dog. You could see how closely she stayed with you fishing that day. She, like you, wanted to make the best of every last moment together. It's always sad to lose a dog. You give them the best in life and at the end. My condolences.
Many thanks, it was sad to say goodbye but that is the fleeting nature of life. She was an amazing dog and couldn't have been a better fishing companion. On the plus side I don't have to spend half my life hoovering up her hair now which should leave more time for fishing.
Respect ❤Staying at home to see to Karla ,i know what it's like losing your companions. Take care.Sorry to hear she has left us.She seemed such a nice dog.
Much appreciated. Karla was a very unique dog and the perfect fishing buddy. She will be a miss but life goes on and one day I'm sure I will meet another great dog in need of a good home.
Great to see you back making videos, sorry to hear about Karla but its obvious she had a great life with you. I hope you do her proud in your future trips.
Thanks, we did have many amazing trips together, she will be a miss but life goes on and I'm sure one day I will get another sidekick. For now though it's back to flying solo for a while
