Getting The Most From Polyleaders! Trout and Salmon Fishing

  • A short video explaining how to get the best from polyleaders for fly fishing for trout and salmon, including the use of tippet rings.
    Some people may think polyleaders are all about depth, but they are also a great way to improve presentation, giving a nice taper direct to your trout or salmon fly, even when using a floating poly. So...as a poor caster, they help hide my faults from the fish!
    I use Airflo polyleaders coupled with Riverge leader or tippet rings for quick changes while maintaining a strong connection from fly line to fly.

    Started using these a couple of years ago and now it’s all I use for both two handed rods and single they have little to no memory and turn over so nicely . Thanks for sharing

    I use the ACE salmon leaders from Vision with Stroft nylon and FC tippet material for salmon/seatrout fishing of 12’ and 15’ + tippet added. For trout I use 9-12’ leaders + tippet material. For salmon I use a Loop NxT 13’2” doublehanded rod (#7, MF action), for trout I only use singlehanded handmade rods or the Loop Evotec Fast taper #6-7, depending on which type of fishing and weather conditions.
    I use a knot from Michael Frödin to attach the tippet material to the polyleader and it serves me well. Indeed, no harm in shortening the polyleader to suit your conditions

      Hi Dirk. No experience using the ACE leaders before but I like the size range from what I see on their site! I have a few spools of stroft too, nice strong mono but also thin enough for small flies 👍

    Thank for this informative video, explains it very well 👍🏽 Just one question if I may. if I fish for seatrout in Patagonia with a 10´ poly leader how long should my tippet be ?

    • @SeánWoodsFishing
      @SeánWoodsFishing  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No problem Roberto 👍 most people have their leader set up the same length of their rod or maybe a foot longer. A polyleader forms part of your leader so if you have a 13ft rod and a 10ft polyleader you would use 3-4ft tippet for a suitable achor for casting

    Thanks for this, only problem is your hand moves out of the frame at me point when your connecting the leader to the fly line so not sure of the pass through to create the nice knot.

    • @SeánWoodsFishing
      @SeánWoodsFishing  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks Joe, hope you find it helpful. Apologies about the camera work, the knot I use for the mini leader to tippet ring is a tucked half blood knot. The polyleader loop goes through the main fly line and then the butt end goes through the welded loop of the fly line. Hope that makes sense? Ask away if not 👍

    Great video Sean. Very informative. A quick question if you don’t mind. If my normal leader length is 13ft and the polyleader is 8ft do you then put 5ft leader line to make the whole lot 13ft and if you fish a dropper is it then quite close to end of polyleader. Many thanks Jim

    • @SeánWoodsFishing
      @SeánWoodsFishing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks very much Jim. Yes that's right the whole leader length includes the playleader and the tippet together. The dropper usually ends up about 3 foot from the start of the poly and 2 foot from the point fly. For very fast polys I would shorten the tippet (not as good for casting) but it will keep the fly down at the same depth of the heavy poly.

    I Was going to do loop to loop but i couldnt tie a perfection loop on that 4 inches of mono at the end of the polyleader.Will i try 2mil leader ring on the end of a 5ft slow sink polyleader for Salmon like you reccommend?

      Hi Alan. I use the 2mm and 3mm rings at the end of 5, 8 and 10 foot polys. Be sure to use reverge rings though, never heard a bad thing about them 👍

    They appear to have loads of memory? How do you straighten? Also which length would you recommend for a 9ft6 or 10ft single-handed rod? In #6 or #7 many thanks

    • @SeánWoodsFishing
      @SeánWoodsFishing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They stretch out fine with the flow of the river, most of mine haven't been used in months you see. For that size of rod 5ft polys would be perfect in salmon or trout strength, depending on what you are targeting 👍

    I've never understood why people believe that you can't put either loop through the other. Once you've pulled the line all the way through you end up with the same loop to loop connection whichever method you use.

    • @SeánWoodsFishing
      @SeánWoodsFishing  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's just neater Kevin. If you put the poly into the fly line it's looping onto itself. Both will be just as secure but the other way will have loops parallel and slightly better presentation
