A tip instead of cutting baking paper every time is to buy either nonstick paper or a grill mat with small holes in it, both of which can be washed and reused.
i have a tip for you for cutting the paper for the tray. fold it in half, then in half again, the point where it crosses itself is the center of the paper. fold it again, but this time into a triangle, keeping the center point as the corner of the triangle. Place the center point in the center of the tray and cut the edge of the triangle into a curve that is at the edge of your dehydrator tray. trim the center point into a small curve to leave the opening for the center. unfold and you should have close to a circle. the more you practice, the better you will get. I am enjoying your videos. You are inspiring me to spend more time on myself on the weekends when I can.
Yes was going to advise the same. th-cam.com/video/rY6duKdOZok/w-d-xo.html (dont know if i can link this, otherwise google "Jamie Oliver cutting bakingpaper" lol & find a 1 min YT-vid of a french guy cutting a 'cartouche'.) I used to have a round dehydrater with a whole in the middle and this worked very well for me.
I love that you discuss food, items to bring, and other life hacks for camping adventures in your vlog. This makes it more enjoyable and informative to watch, helping people like me to better enjoy their travels. Stay safe! ❤
- Steaming is a great way to prepare veggies for dehydration. Its quick and avoids the use of oil for pan frying. - You can use Minute Rice instead of cooking and drying your own. - Some health food stores carry dehydrated Black Beans, ready to add to your camping food. For example, camping burritos.
I would love to see more videos on making dehydrated meals or just any pre prepped camp meals. You two are so good together! Keep up the great work. ❤❤❤
Next up.. BORSH! :) On my last backpacking trip up in the Enchantments my tastiest dinner ended up being borsh. Due to time constraints I didn't do my usual homemade dehydrated meal thing so I snagged some vegan dinners from MEC, and the tastiest was the borsh. Having had borsh in Ukraine I've become pretty picky about borsh ;) The one I had was from Nomad Nutrition... my favorite (so far) commercial backpacking food, but I'd still prefer to make my own.
That sounds delicious out in the wild back country! I like you talk us through every step in the process of making the food ready to prep ! Great video !!
Thanks so much for sharing this. The YT short on Pad Thai was good as well. Good to know about oil not dehydrating well. I will definitely try your recipes once I get the dehydrator. 😆 Thanks everyone for your tips in the comments. What a great channel!
I've been dehydrating camping meals for a while. I didn't have good luck with tofu, it was chewy and tough. I'll try freezing as you suggest. I "cook" the meals right in the freezer bag which I put inside a cozy made from foil bubble insulation. Boil water pour it in and let it "cook" for 10-15 min. Eat it right out of the bag. No clean up or washing. Zip the bag closed and take it home to be washed and resused.
Hey Madison nice to see you make another video. It's been awhile. Spring is finally here. Time for new adventures yeah. Interesting recipes you made. I would definitely try. Looked tasty.
This is brilliant! Thank you. I've been dehydrating meats and fruits for years, but never considered making my own backpacking meals. Now I know what I'm doing this weekend. So, let's see how the spaghetti turns out!
So entertaining and informative, highly relatable with the can't locate the cutlery. Fast food wooden utensils are easy to store in the glove box or backpack, will be there till needed weigh nothing and don't rattle. Seems reinstated obviousness, but despite having dehydrated food, the premix and tofu advice, was stuff I learned from your latest vlog! Always an amusing entertaining experience, thanks Madison the amazing!
Get some food safe desiccant sachets to drop in your vacuum bag, then any residual moisture will be absorbed. If you have resealable vacuum bags then they work well. Also get sealable bags with the manual plunger (they are tiny) then you can reseal repeatedly. Foodsaver have good stuff. You could do boil in bag meals too. But that would have liquid still.
Thank you!!! After watching your channel I looked into trying a dehydrator. There were so many options, I was overwhelmed. Love the recipes and the demonstration. I have learned so many tips from you. I can’t wait to make my own meals. Thanks, it’s great to see you back.
I know its crazy! Just a cheepo is great. It just needs to blow hot air and you are good ;) The more expensive ones mostly are easier to work with, so worth the pay if you are using them every week or so. They also dry more even, while with a cheaper one you might have to rotate the trays once. Sometimes they have more settings in temp and timer etc. But you dont need all that :) Ive had a cheepo for many years until it broke down and it worked very well for me
For the parchment paper, if you fold a square a bit bigger than your tray in half, then half again, then in half but diagonally, cut a curve in the bigger end and snip off the other end, then unfold it, you will get a circle with a hole in the middle. Much quicker and easier than what you were doing.
My favourite fruit leather is like a fizzy Haribo (do you have them in Canada!) I put blended cooked apple or apple sauce in mine as the pectin helps it set and keeps it soft and juicy; Pineapple, apple, grated ginger, add coriander after pureeing
I've been making my own meals like this for a few years now. Its the only way to go. Those expensive pre-mades, make my tummy not well every time, so making my own, they are cheaper and far less salt. I make a great breakfast air dried recipe. bacon, scrabbled eggs, peppers, and those dried browns from costco. cheers. Kelowna people.
Nice to see a new, great video from you! As a chef, I have done very little dehydrated cooking. You give a lot of nice insight. I use to make sweet potato leather for my dog that had some allergies.
It is a lot of work, but interesting I have never seen it before. Thank you for your video and I wish you breathtaking experiences this year 😊 Spagetti Carbonara are tasty. Best greetings from Austria 🇦🇹
I just use my oven. Here in Sweden your oven goes to any temperature so thats nice. I have 3 go-to meals I use, then I add olive oil to the finished meal to fill up on calories.
Hesitant to say anything negative...I appreciate your channel and content...just raising the concern of putting boiling water in a plastic bag as this can leach chemicals into your food. In a pinch, sure, but may not be good to do regularly.
Some of the Zip Lock bags are BPA free and safe to boil in. But I would check with manufacturer first. I checked with Zip Lock for boiling an omelet in a bag. 👍🏼❤
I really need to use my dehydrator more often. I'm going to dehydrate some fruit before my next camping trip. Maybe I'll do a meal too. I'm thinking some kind of dehydrated breakfast scramble with eggs, cheese, sausage, potatoes, peppers, and onions that I can use for breakfast tacos/burritos.
i love your a great adeventure/travel lady and share it with the world. what would your camping/outdoor pizza be? or evening snacks made on a campfire?
Have you tried dehydrating the “better than bullion?” Also, I bring a little silicone bottle of sesame oil. + EVO to add when rehydrating. Really adds flavor and richness.
Great video first time seeing ur channel. I often wondered what else I could do with my dehydrater be sides making my homemade beef jerky. Lots of ideas now. Thanks
This all looks great but I'm concerned about chemicals leaching from the ziploc bag as I don't think they're designed to handle boiling hot water. What are your thoughts?
This is really interesting. Great tutorial. 2 questions 1) can u link the reusuable bag used at 9:30 and 2) How does this go with actual meat instead of Tofu (chicke/beef/prawns). Is that possible in a dehydrator? Thanks for the content.
just google shopping silicone reusable ziploc and voila..your answer.. Prawns I ve never tried chicken is very difficult to rehydrate back without a jerky like texture. Extra lean 10% beef is by far the best for dehydrating The main rule in dehydrating is lean lean lean Fat does not dehydrate well
the noodles could and probably will puncture the freezer bag, I make an envelope out of parchment paper and line the inside of the freezer bag with that to prevent punctures
I've always wondered why more people don't do this. It seems they stop after dehydrating chili or spaghetti. Can do so much with shelf stable ingredients and a cheap dehydrator. And not a whole lot of recipes around.
Like to buy those 2.5oz packets of Bacon Pieces in condiment section of grocery stores, shelf stable, adds protein fat & taste to grits, ramen, or mash potatoes.
Well it’s nice to have you back
It has been awhile
New video next week too 🥰

You might be able to use round or square air fryer liners to use in your dehydrator. Costco sells packages of 100.
My mom bought a dehydrator for their backcountry and camoung stuff too. Can't wait to share this with them. AND Welcome back, Madison!
