    You nailed it: the genius of Jack Black and Tenacious D is that they are always FULLY committed to the bit. Which includes both of them being legitimately brilliant musicians and songwriters. They're deadly serious about their extreme silliness, and few comedians (especially of their generations) have that kind of confidence. They've been a breath of fresh air to me for 25 years-and it really delighted me to see you take them so seriously as well. ❤

    That _is_ Ben Stiller. He and Jack Black have been friends for a long time, and that's why JB finds his way into many of Stiller's projects. Likewise, Ben Stiller pops up in Black's stuff, too. In their movie, Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, Ben Stiller plays a guitar store employee that sets them on the path to their goal for the movie.

    Widely believed "Stairway to Heaven" is the referenced greatest song in the world (you can pick up guitar notes from Stairway in several sections), and this is a tribute to that song.

    • @shadowproductions969
      @shadowproductions969 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      the chorus is literally the outro progression and stairway is often regarded as the greatest rock song

    • @flipchartpad
      @flipchartpad ปีที่แล้ว +5

      also when they play it live they sometimes play the intro of Stairway in the middle of the song, so it's really not "widely believed" but pretty much confirmed...

    • @manof1001faces
      @manof1001faces ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It was partially inspired by one by Metallica and partially by stairway to heaven, but it’s not about any one particular song.

    • @WolfHeathen
      @WolfHeathen ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's not. It's about "The Devil's Trill" by Giuseppe Tartini. Tenacious D pretty much just retell the story about Tartini hearing the devil play the greatest piece of music in the world in a dream and Tartini's attempt at recreating it was so inferior he considered it to be no more than a tribute.

    • @korkoo1
      @korkoo1 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, I dont know, but in my book this a capella is a reference to how they in found secret messages in music when you played the LP backwards, and suddenly clear as day you hear the word "Lucifer". Rock was considered the downfall of the youth ever since the seductive power of Elvis hips... I do think the religious right in the US tried to claim a backwards messages in stairway to heaven, something about satan and 666 and even coupled this to the Manson murders and stuff... this was long before I was born but I do think this part is refencing some of that stuff.

    Ahh, I love the bit you talk about feeling relaxed on the stage. Actually, thanks to your videos, last year I signed up for vocal lessons in my neighborhood music school and after only two months they had this talent show. It was a bunch of elementary schoolers, 30 year old me and one other adult vocal student. My teacher asked if I wanted to be involved, at that point I still couldn't sing at all, but thanks to you I knew singing was about having fun with your voice and also I was already doing theater, so I didn't mind being on stage. I figured I'd be fun and goofy and enjoy being there. I ended up doing a duet with my teacher, I sounded mostly terrible but I enjoyed the hell out of it and everyone loved it to bits! This is mostly thanks to your positive energy and joy about singing. I managed to forget about my self-consciousness and just tapped on my goofy side. It became one of my best memories ever. I had to drop out due to moving cities but I really want to go back to it again. Thank you for this channel and all your positive energy!

    6:28 More specifically, it's a reference to the legend of a blues musician (I think Robert Johnson, Cross Road Blues is all about this) meeting the devil at a crossroads in the country and selling their soul for fame and fortune.
    But more overall, this song is about how so many songs are "The greatest song in the world" like One and Stairway to Heaven, and yet that title is meaningless as there's no real "perfect" song. Except the one they sang that fateful night. They just forgot how it goes.

  • @memphischick2805

      Was going to point out the same, shame this legend seems to be lost on this generation, even though it is a trope often used in supernatural lure. Juke joint music, is seriously some of the best music ever produced, and a massive influence on rock and metal, the rockers of the 60's/70s heavily influenced by it, Black Sabbath for one example.

    The man playing with black jack is Kyle gas, they are old friends and they did the movie together, its them together that make "tenacious D" One of their songs that i think you might have an interest in more so on the story telling side is "Ballad of Holleywood Jack and the rage cage" Its the story of how they went on their separate rise, jack rising to fame, and Kyle going down a path of sorrow, and then their reunion.

    Pretty sure others said it already but not only Ben wassisname Stiller was in this video but the Devil itself is Dave Grohl!
    Also the song is inspired by The Devil went down to Georgia, which is also a great song about battling a Devil.
    Nice interpretation of the tune, i think the main point of it is that in this spur of the moment when Satan challenged them, they just improvised the best song in the world and beat him.
    And then wrote "Tribute" to tell their tale since they don't remember how the "best song in the world" went.
    Cheers

    I believe, though could be one of those urban myths, that the original version of the song was actually referencing and included Stairway to Heaven as the "greatest song in the world" - there are videos floating around using a lot of the Stairway guitar work etc, but the Zeppelin denied the use of their copywritten song to an, at the time, unknown band, thus this album version was the one we all know and love.
    But again, could be a complete urban myth xD
    It is also worth noting, that if you're ever bored (or want a video series idea), they actually did a film, the soundtrack of which was their second album, called Pick of Destiny which is largely one big music video with some story in between connecting all the songs.

    I’ve been binging your videos for the past few days and I love the way you explained the complexities of the human voice in a way everybody can understand. I truly appreciate what you do and I love how genuinely excited you get when you hear something cool, and then you nerd out. Your channel is truly such a positive experience, please never stop 😁 also, a suggestion, and a journey of many different vocal techniques. War of Being by Tesseract. If you find the time, I’m sure you’ll love it ❤️

    That other guy is the one and only Kyle Gass aka K.G. or Rage Kage!
    The songs main section uses the chord sequence Am, G, F - Which just happens to also be the main chord sequence to Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven, undeniably and most definitely the greatest song ever written. I think this was their tribute to that song.
    Surprising you haven't heard any other Tenacious D songs as they're freaking awesome and Jack Black is just an insane rock vocalist to analyse. Please do more of them!

    it would be such a pleasure to see u react to a song No one should read this by Tallah, or any song from Matriphagy album. their singer Justin has some strong extreme vocal techniques and it would be a dream come true to see and hear ur analysis on his performance!
    i know that such music is not that popular type of content and perhaps will not bring great amount of views, but i still hope this reaction will happen one day!

    @6:30 I think this is more a specific reference to the longstanding trope of the blues guitar man selling his soul at the crossroad for guitar-playing skills (e.g. Robert Johnson, or The Devil Went Down to Georgia)

    Dear Lolli, now that you have dipped your feet into Tenacious D, I have two suggestions that will CHANGE YOUR LIFE! (hope I'm not too late for you to miss the comment)
    1- Watch "Kickapoo"s video, it has a special participation that you will very much love. THEN in the same video look for a 2 min clip of that person recording the song in studio, it WILL BLOW YOUR MIND. Seriously.
    2- Watch their recent video for "Wicked Game", it's a freaking piece of art. Unfortunately it's very short, so you can look for their live performance as well to complement the video.
    That's it, love your reactions, please keep it up... you're actually the only reactor I have a follow on (and I watch A LOT of you), that tells how good you are :)

    The first time I saw "Tribute," I was fascinated by everything happening in the song and video. Great analysis and "Ah ha!" moment. Another older video that is fun with interesting vocals is The Hillbilly Moon Explosion's cover of "Jackson" featuring Sparky from Demented Are Go.

    Multiple platinum in over 12 markets,
    3 ARIAs,
    2 Grammy Awards,
    8th in Billboards, top 100 of the 2010s,

    I'm part of the weird crowd that likes to watch reactors hear songs I've heard a million times, that being said i looked through your channel and you haven't reacted to unchained melody by the righteous brothers!! Lol as a person who wishes they could actually sing (I'm a kareoke champion despite it) I love your take on vocals cause it gives me hope, loved to watch your opinion on that song, it's a classic and to watch it live...just....chefs kiss
