  • In this video, I react for the first time to Tenacious D performing "Tribute”. I analyze their amazing performance, explain and demonstrate their vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. Jack Black and Kyle Gass are icons of comedy and it turns out they’re also serious musical talents!

    You nailed it: the genius of Jack Black and Tenacious D is that they are always FULLY committed to the bit. Which includes both of them being legitimately brilliant musicians and songwriters. They're deadly serious about their extreme silliness, and few comedians (especially of their generations) have that kind of confidence. They've been a breath of fresh air to me for 25 years-and it really delighted me to see you take them so seriously as well. ❤

    Ahh, I love the bit you talk about feeling relaxed on the stage. Actually, thanks to your videos, last year I signed up for vocal lessons in my neighborhood music school and after only two months they had this talent show. It was a bunch of elementary schoolers, 30 year old me and one other adult vocal student. My teacher asked if I wanted to be involved, at that point I still couldn't sing at all, but thanks to you I knew singing was about having fun with your voice and also I was already doing theater, so I didn't mind being on stage. I figured I'd be fun and goofy and enjoy being there. I ended up doing a duet with my teacher, I sounded mostly terrible but I enjoyed the hell out of it and everyone loved it to bits! This is mostly thanks to your positive energy and joy about singing. I managed to forget about my self-consciousness and just tapped on my goofy side. It became one of my best memories ever. I had to drop out due to moving cities but I really want to go back to it again. Thank you for this channel and all your positive energy!

    That _is_ Ben Stiller. He and Jack Black have been friends for a long time, and that's why JB finds his way into many of Stiller's projects. Likewise, Ben Stiller pops up in Black's stuff, too. In their movie, Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, Ben Stiller plays a guitar store employee that sets them on the path to their goal for the movie.

    Widely believed "Stairway to Heaven" is the referenced greatest song in the world (you can pick up guitar notes from Stairway in several sections), and this is a tribute to that song.

    • @shadowproductions969
      @shadowproductions969 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      the chorus is literally the outro progression and stairway is often regarded as the greatest rock song

    • @flipchartpad
      @flipchartpad 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      also when they play it live they sometimes play the intro of Stairway in the middle of the song, so it's really not "widely believed" but pretty much confirmed...

    • @manof1001faces
      @manof1001faces 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was partially inspired by one by Metallica and partially by stairway to heaven, but it’s not about any one particular song.

    • @WolfHeathen
      @WolfHeathen 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      It's not. It's about "The Devil's Trill" by Giuseppe Tartini. Tenacious D pretty much just retell the story about Tartini hearing the devil play the greatest piece of music in the world in a dream and Tartini's attempt at recreating it was so inferior he considered it to be no more than a tribute.

    • @korkoo1
      @korkoo1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also, I dont know, but in my book this a capella is a reference to how they in found secret messages in music when you played the LP backwards, and suddenly clear as day you hear the word "Lucifer". Rock was considered the downfall of the youth ever since the seductive power of Elvis hips... I do think the religious right in the US tried to claim a backwards messages in stairway to heaven, something about satan and 666 and even coupled this to the Manson murders and stuff... this was long before I was born but I do think this part is refencing some of that stuff.

    Pretty sure others said it already but not only Ben wassisname Stiller was in this video but the Devil itself is Dave Grohl!
    Also the song is inspired by The Devil went down to Georgia, which is also a great song about battling a Devil.
    Nice interpretation of the tune, i think the main point of it is that in this spur of the moment when Satan challenged them, they just improvised the best song in the world and beat him.
    And then wrote "Tribute" to tell their tale since they don't remember how the "best song in the world" went.
    Cheers

      Was going to point out the same, shame this legend seems to be lost on this generation, even though it is a trope often used in supernatural lure. Juke joint music, is seriously some of the best music ever produced, and a massive influence on rock and metal, the rockers of the 60's/70s heavily influenced by it, Black Sabbath for one example.

    the concept of this song was inspired by Giuseppe Tartini's Devil's Trill Sonata. He himself retold the story of the devil encounter as follows:
    One night, in the year 1713 I dreamed I had made a pact with the devil for my soul. Everything went as I wished: my new servant anticipated my every desire. Among other things, I gave him my violin to see if he could play. How great was my astonishment on hearing a sonata so wonderful and so beautiful, played with such great art and intelligence, as I had never even conceived in my boldest flights of fantasy. I felt enraptured, transported, enchanted: my breath failed me, and I awoke. I immediately grasped my violin in order to retain, in part at least, the impression of my dream. In vain! The music which I at this time composed is indeed the best that I ever wrote, and I still call it the "Devil's Trill", but the difference between it and that which so moved me is so great that I would have destroyed my instrument and have said farewell to music forever if it had been possible for me to live without the enjoyment it affords me.

    The man playing with black jack is Kyle gas, they are old friends and they did the movie together, its them together that make "tenacious D" One of their songs that i think you might have an interest in more so on the story telling side is "Ballad of Holleywood Jack and the rage cage" Its the story of how they went on their separate rise, jack rising to fame, and Kyle going down a path of sorrow, and then their reunion.

    I can't wait!! You have the best analysis style with how you edit and demonstrate what is being done plus your excitement and humor.
    On a side note. I would really like your take on Blues Traveler, Hook. They do it so well most folks have no clue that the lyrics are trolling the music industry and people who don't listen to lyrics. The studio official video is great as well. If you do live, you might be crying when he sings to the kids with disabilities that are stage on the most popular live version

    it would be such a pleasure to see u react to a song No one should read this by Tallah, or any song from Matriphagy album. their singer Justin has some strong extreme vocal techniques and it would be a dream come true to see and hear ur analysis on his performance!
    i know that such music is not that popular type of content and perhaps will not bring great amount of views, but i still hope this reaction will happen one day!

    The "goose fronting" segment (around the 9:30 mark) reminded me of a reaction I watched to Devin Townsend's "Kingdom" where it was stated that Devin's exaggerated facial expressions are intentional and are the key to creating vocal distortion without causing pressure on the vocal folds.
    I loved watching this, thank you 😁

Gotta love people that understand and appreciate music of all genres. Keep up the awesome content. :D P.S. The guys in the wolf outfits are the two guys that made "What does the Fox say" song. The first time I saw "Tribute," I was fascinated by everything happening in the song and video. Great analysis and "Ah ha!" moment. Another older video that is fun with interesting vocals is The Hillbilly Moon Explosion's cover of "Jackson" featuring Sparky from Demented Are Go.

    That other guy is the one and only Kyle Gass aka K.G. or Rage Kage!
    The songs main section uses the chord sequence Am, G, F - Which just happens to also be the main chord sequence to Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven, undeniably and most definitely the greatest song ever written. I think this was their tribute to that song.
    Surprising you haven't heard any other Tenacious D songs as they're freaking awesome and Jack Black is just an insane rock vocalist to analyse. Please do more of them!

  • @Vikingeek

    I believe, though could be one of those urban myths, that the original version of the song was actually referencing and included Stairway to Heaven as the "greatest song in the world" - there are videos floating around using a lot of the Stairway guitar work etc, but the Zeppelin denied the use of their copywritten song to an, at the time, unknown band, thus this album version was the one we all know and love.
    But again, could be a complete urban myth xD
    It is also worth noting, that if you're ever bored (or want a video series idea), they actually did a film, the soundtrack of which was their second album, called Pick of Destiny which is largely one big music video with some story in between connecting all the songs.

    Loving the bonus clips at the end 😁

    I think Tribute is closer to Tartini's Devil's Trill Sonata than the crossroads story. Tartini says the devil appeared to him in a dream and played him a song on his violin, and Tartini immediately woke up and wrote the best piece that he would ever create--and then swore that it was so inferior to what he'd heard in the dream that he would have smashed his violin and given up music altogether if he didn't have to rely on it to put food on his plate. (He couldn't remember the greatest song in the world, so he had to settle for a tribute.)
