Gils whole defense point has been mine for years now, help defense isn’t seen as much in the lane bc you have to guard the perimeter at all times now, no more 2 bigs clogging the lane for help
Most teams In the 80s and 90s had 2 shooter shooters on the entire team. And probably only relied on one because the other one was so bad at defense. To where today there aren't even that many 3 point specialists in the league. Most offenses have players that are versatile. So when a player does rotate from one side of the court to the other to stop a catch and shoot opportunity, the 3 point specialist of a decade ago wouldn't have been able to attack the close out. In today's game Most guards or wings can attack the close out. It's so much harder today on defense
The point that Sheryl and Rashad have been mine for years. Players don't want to do all the defense work because it's more difficult to play defense today. So the players just give up.
@@TA-ht4jonot true. It’s just really difficult to play 80s and 90s defense today. For example you have the Thunder when Cason Wallace or Isiah Joe is on the floor with the starters, you have 5 people in the game who shoot 38% from 3 or better. You pre-rotate to stop the roll or you drop to cut off the midrange for shai and there is a plethora of threes and drives available. Shai throws it to Chet on the wing, your team rotates. Chet can beat the rotation of the dribble, now you’re in scramble mode. Chet from here can pull up a middy, post up, or dish to opposite corner. Point is when everyone can shoot, pass, and dribble, you cannot stay true to old principles because offense gets too easy
The old school game plan is to force players to shoot long jumpers. The modern NBA is about protecting the perimeter. The game has changed and the shell defence, split line help is never going to be effective in today’s NBA.
If what ur saying is correct then they just haven't figured out how to defend then basically in this day ... cause it sure seems like most teams can't play defense not all but most
Yeh I think this is the common misconception. NBA teams actually have figured out how to defend. Uncontested or corner threes are the most efficient shots on the court so defences are designed to limit these shots whereas from 1960-200 the most effective shot was the layup or show within 5 feet so defences were designed to limit those.
As long as you have active players on defense, that understand the basics of basketball and that is to get the ball as close as you can to the basket, in order to get the highest percentage of scoring, basic basketball will get you chips... Shout out to the Spurs DYNASTY... Shit, STEPH ain't gonna hit every 3 point attempt... Nobody will go 20 for 20 from 3 in a game and sadly, that's the mindset of todays hooper... Nigga just SCORE
When gil said maybe if you shut the f*** up and let me say it.....right so you was at the 2....after Mccants went on that rage lol my stomach hurts again😂😂😂😂😂😂
Gil is saying that most teams have 4-5 shooters on the court instead of 1-2 like in the past. It's easier to guard when you can crowd the paint. Nowadays you can't crowd the paint because the ball will keep swinging until it hits a open shooter.
@@Valorant_Dem0n97 nah, the offense wasn't trash back, the game was more balanced. Players had specific roles instead of being expected to be everything all at once.
McCants doesn't understand the very simple concept that on average players today are more skilled and better shooters. So when he said there is no dead weight, he means there are no charles oakleys anymore guys who defend but not score. So defending the other 29 teams are harder because you have more shooters on every team.
Oakley could shoot. Deadly from 18 ft. And he really wasn't a good defender. He was more of an enforcer (help defender) Your point would make more sense if you said Rodman.
No Charles Oakley anymore? Oakley can score during his early day. If we're talking now, players who defend but not score, what do you call the Morris brothers, PJ Tucker, Patrick Beverley, Draymond ain't been scoring in years now.
FYI it's a statistical fact that today's players are not better shooters with the exception of a few players than that of the players before them. They shoot the 3 more thanks to guys who says shooting 3s are better than long 2s. Also based on what I just stated can we please get rid of the notion that high volume shooters are not in the game today?
4-5 people willing to shoot * is different then 4-5 who CAN shoot. just because everyone is jacking 3s up don’t mean they are hitting them at a high clip

@@GmkSuperstarsit was an irrelevant take. What does a team 20 years ago have to do with now? People glaze Gil for no reason. The loudest person in the room is usually the weakest or has the weakest argument.
Not to mention in a high pace era, you're asking the whole defense to just run around way harder because "well we did it 20 years ago" like, you didn't have to run as far to close out on offense because the floor wasn't spaced out, AND you weren't running up and down the court non-stop all game because the pace was so slow.
Defenders used to be able sag off into the lane, 2 guys on the blocks, sitting at the free throw line. Nobody was worried about the 3 point shot. Defenders had to cover half the distance, and even on a switch they are only covering 15 feet. Now that everyone can shoot from deep, defenders have to cover an extra 10 feet in every direction. That spreads the floor and opens lanes to the basket. Offenses are now doing things like having the screener on a pick doing give and go handoffs back to the ball handler while the ball handler is going downhill, then the screener steps back behind the 3. Defenses aren’t lazy, they can’t keep up with the firepower on offense.

Kobe said it best that nowadays it is accidental basketball, meaning they only run pick and rolls and pass to shooter if they open or drive in. They don't even know where each player is most of the time on the court, while back in the OG days, they ran solid plays so everytime down the line they knew where to find an open man if the defense gives you a closure.

love kobe but nobody in his era could shoot and i laughed out loud at set plays. players can score better now because they can shoot better now which opens the whole court. lakers offense was stagnant and slow and with two gods like shaq and kobe barely scratched 105
The nba handcuffed defenders by recreating the game as non-contact sport. NBA defenses are not allowed to meaningfully defend shooters because it is illegal to touch or even blow on them. Defenders are only allowed to be cones. Combine that with lack of effort and general competitiveness and you have a shooting contest/skills competition. We don’t know how skilled the modern player is because they have yet to be faced with defensive adversity.
No amount of effort makes up for being at a schematic/personnel disadvantage on defense. Gilbert is right. Currently the game is at an em pass with the amount of skilled players on the court at one time. It is not realistic to lock a high level team up for four quarters or a seven game series.

I don’t think they realize that if the defense is consistently rotating( which is good) they are at a disadvantage because they always have to be closing out on the man with the ball. And anyone who plays basketball knows that when you going against a defender that closing out , you will get an open shot.
Most nba teams don’t move the ball like that. It’s just dribble drive and kick out This is bc of defensive 3 seconds allowing the paint to be wide open Couple that with all the illegal screens, travels, carrying and touch fouls and you have the modern nba game

Even worse is that it eventually creates mismatches. which means eventually a big is over the freethrow line spotting a guard and a guard is being trucked on by a big going to the lane/calling out loud for the ball. Exactly. People forget Giannis struggled vs the Raps in 19 playing box and 1. The following years other teams tried it and him and the bucks figured it out. Offense is just so advanced now.
They are all right. Yes it is more difficult to defend because teams have more shooters. But you can also watch and see guys don't prioritize defense like they once did.
Défense is incredibly hard. In team defense, you want to force the lowest percentage shot for that team and individual. At the elite level, you can't stop them shooting. Now, even the 5th scoring option has shots that they can shoot well enough to be a threat you just have to pick your poison. Just saying run shell drill against some of the most skilled and athletic basketball players in the world is crazy.
That sounds like the NBA promoting its product. Players have evolved so much😂. Nah defense just aint apart of what appeals to todays fans. At an elite level you force the offense in to taking the lower percentage shots (whatever is apart of your game plan). We are watching an era where the best defense you’ll see is teams willingly trading buckets😂
I don’t think these people realize that once a defense is in rotation someone that can shoot will be open. It is an automatic open 3. And you can’t win giving up nothing but open 3s
It’s funny, I think the reason why they’re getting this worked up is they can’t slow down to see that they’re both right! Teams have sacrificed better defenders to stack their teams with better scorers, so of course these better scorers are not going to work as hard as the old defenders did.
Yeah stop a 6’4, athletic guard that can shoot from 35 with a tight handle, you fucking can’t n wont bro. If you could get stops, you’d be in the league, be real with yourself.
Defense can be taught. Knowing how to navigate screens is teachable and is huge. Knowing how to force a player to go a certain direction, all learned skills But yes, it does take effort
Defense can and is taught; how to play a screen on defense and offense is taught in college. AAU is not teaching players how to hedge a screen to slow down the ball; whether to go over or under a screen on defense if you’re on the ball; how to communicate as the defender if your man is setting the screen. Taught in college for sure.

He’s talking about effort. Even Kenyon who was an elite defensive PF said he watches games and sees a lack of effort or little things not being done to ruffle the offensive player. But because Rashad and Sheryl are saying it, well he was average player with a short career and she starred in the WNBA, so their opinions are irrelevant. Most of the best ex-player coaches weren’t stars. Kerr, Udoka and Lue never averaged more than 15 in a season either. So trying to ascribe basketball knowledge to Rashad’s NBA success as a player, is misguided logic. You have high IQ stars, but some aren’t. I don’t consider Ja Morant or Jayson Tatum high IQ hoopers. Not all these dudes are Kobe, MJ, Magic, Bird, Jokic, Lebron, Stockton, Duncan, CP3 etc. Many of these new players are coming into the NBA after 1 year of college, so they’re grasp of the game isn’t level with their skill and talent.

I just can’t accept the narrative that players are now more skilled and better shooters. If players are more skilled at offense, so they should at defense too ! I believe nowadays, defense is set up to save superstars energy in detriment of game efforts. I’d even go further saying that NBA being rigged is true at some point.
It takes so much more effort to play team defense today. The floor was shrunk with a lot of non-shooters and a lot of people not willing to shoot back then. The ground you have to cover these days is crazy. To give that effort for 82 games with more possessions than ever is a crazy ask. Only a team with the best of the best defenders can do it.
Who said give up? I’m speaking about what your body is able to handle. Playing defense takes much more energy than playing offense. If the ball is moving more than ever and offense are covering much more ground than ever, how will a team be able to do that at 100% energy 48 minutes 82 games? Most teams In the 80s and 90s had 2 shooter shooters on the entire team. And probably only relied on one because the other one was so bad at defense. To where today there aren't even that many 3 point specialists in the league. Most offenses have players that are versatile. So when a player does rotate from one side of the court to the other to stop a catch and shoot opportunity, the 3 point specialist of a decade ago wouldn't have been able to attack the close out. In today's game Most guards or wings can attack the close out. It's so much harder today on defense
them niggas still shoot trash so its stupid every playoffs these teams get abused cause of lack of shooting
The point that Sheryl and Rashad have been mine for years. Players don't want to do all the defense work because it's more difficult to play defense today. So the players just give up.
Or they can just hand check and go back to physical play they had teams with full shooters back then too but come playoffs it didn’t work
@@TA-ht4jonot true.
Mccants started walking into them bullets lol
The old school game plan is to force players to shoot long jumpers. The modern NBA is about protecting the perimeter. The game has changed and the shell defence, split line help is never going to be effective in today’s NBA.
No teams would still rather you shoot a jumper than a lay up so that part hasn't changed
If what ur saying is correct then they just haven't figured out how to defend then basically in this day ... cause it sure seems like most teams can't play defense not all but most
@@jaeslice1012 harder to play defense with the amount of shooting and spacing on the floor

And anyone who plays basketball knows that when you going against a defender that closing out , you will get an open shot.
Not everyone is a shooter on the floor and sometimes you have to force another player (4 and 5 options) to beat you.
Most nba teams don’t move the ball like that. It’s just dribble drive and kick out

Defense can and is taught; how to play a screen on defense and offense is taught in college.

The game is outside the arc now. Its to difficult to play defense with the floor spread and the skills of the nba players
it is with pussy rules
It takes so much more effort to play team defense today. The floor was shrunk with a lot of non-shooters and a lot of people not willing to shoot back then. The ground you have to cover these days is crazy. To give that effort for 82 games with more possessions than ever is a crazy ask. Only a team with the best of the best defenders can do it.
Sounds like a bunch of excuses. So I guess the players should just give up on defense, huh?
Who said give up? I’m speaking about what your body is able to handle. Playing defense takes much more energy than playing offense. If the ball is moving more than ever and offense are covering much more ground than ever, how will a team be able to do that at 100% energy 48 minutes 82 games? Go back and watch games in the 90s they’re practically walking around on defense because there was less shots, less ball moving and less spacing. Youre not respecting the level of difficulty it is to play elite defense
@@Flagrant32yet KD has issues playing Celtics when allowed to have to defend physical defense. Defense also wears down that offensive man. Gil gives excuses for players being lazy.
@@SymonPhoenix-w3u I have some homework for you. Go look at the spacing and ball movement in the 90s compared to now and also notice how less of a threat there was for teams tk actually shoot the 3. You had to cover a lot less of the floor then.
@@TA-ht4johow do you hear excuses out of cold facts??? If you’ve ever watched a full 90s basketball game, you’d INSTANTLY see and understand it was easier to play defense and crowd the paint back then
That ending was pure gold
Two things can be true yal. Players don’t give the same effort to defend anymore and these stretch 4,5’s are much more lethal than in the 90’s and 2000’s.
Gil's "I got it" at 30:29 was all of us
Gil acts like he was a 10 All-star HoF player. He's not even a top 75 player. Gil does a little too much sometimes.
@@TA-ht4jowhat was you ?
@@TA-ht4jo wasnt for that knee injury he would been.. know basketball with context before you say that
The league has never been more skilled. At the same time defense is not being played the way it used to be. And all you have to do is see the switch up when the post season comes around.
You can tell which older players keep up with the game and those who stayed in their era lmao
Lol freaking exactly. The reason why 2016 cavs actually beat 2016 warriors was they switched on everything to neutralize their shooters getting open. These old heads think defense is lazy while teams today are screening multiple times. Curry is one of the best conditioned athletes. Try chasing him all game and call this era lazy.
I never thought i would hear so much sense out of Gil lmao
This guy mccants gotta be acting. Players are faster more skilled more athletic more stamina and everyone on the court will absolutely kill you and they all shoot it. The role players then and now are not the same so the defense cannot be the same. If u overcommit you die in a split second.
and WAAAY more soft and stupid
19:03 gll look he about spit a hot 16 freestyle lol
Lol😂😂😂 facts
Everyone understands what Gil said but the effort the force on defense is lacking how he sit up there and act like it not is krazy
There is effort on defense. The game has evolved offense is far ahead of defense.
Gil your best show... this is the convo I wanna hear
50% of defense is effort wtf is gil on?
McCants said he’d average 30 points but he never averaged more than 14.9 in a season. LOL WHAT???
in this soft recreational wnba league i'm pretty sure he actually would average 30
Gil is just plain right here, why tf would teams trying to compete for titles just “be lazy”? Cmon
The Phoenix Suns with that all world offense never made it to one NBA Finals. Defense wins Championships.
Seriously, this was a great conversation.
I don’t think it’s the players effort. I think it’s the rules that are handcuffing the defense
They kinda both right it's harder to guard today because there are more shooters on the floor but they not putting in the effort on defense either
Facts like when the 76ers beat the mavs in Dallas a couple weeks ago there is no way Kyle Lowry should be constantly blowing pass Luka
“SHOOTING, XBOX, CARDSSSS!!!!! HE CAN’T BEAT ME IN NUN!!!” I’m cryin😂🤣🤣🤣
Gill is 1000% right on this
They began by stating that they are lazier now than before. Gill is the only one demonstrating the changes over the years. I'm not sure why there's confusion. they basically only had one defensive strategy and that was effort, rotations..
The label of being lazy or lacking effort is a media narrative that verges on disrespectful. Without question, today's shooters have significantly improved. Both offensive and defensive strategies have evolved. laziness is not why the WHOLE league has changed.. saving lazy players is a wild statement. noone is in that league for free
Timberwolves is a prime example of what Mccants was trying to explain as far as effort in defense & rotations
Why mccants talking like a defensive expert . He didn’t get PT for being a good defender or scorer and let Lebron drop 30 plus every matchup? Am I supposed to just take what he say because he made the league for 3 years?? The same league that drafted kwame brown 1st overall out of highschool?!?!?
It doesn’t matter if it’s old basketball principles or not it’s still same thing even when they got 4 shooters out their boxes and elbows when ball is skipped to the corner and when the ball is air they have to rotate and close out and force them off the line doesn’t matter if a middle pick and roll or not the game has got lazy on the defense end and they just switch everything because they are lazy to fight over the screen or pick your man 94 feet or at half court line
If no defense is being played, what is the other team doing when the other team is on offense?
Why are screens set if no defense is being played?
Why are step back shots necessary when if defense is being played.
Offensive moves and rapid ball movement is at an all time high so defense appears to be worse.
John Stockton and Karl Malone did a basic pick and roll that was indefensible…but yet the 90s was the best era in defense.
Stop it.
Gil is wrong!!!! He’s acting like everyone is gonna be 100%. Good offense beats good defense so with that being said: MAKE THEM WORK!!!
Gil didn’t play defense soo of course he don’t understand 8:14
I love the convo here
they both right . u don’t have a choice but to rotate when beat , but there are more shooters now as well .
He talking Shaq & Lakers when there wasnt a three to spread the court😂😂
Gilbert doesn't understand 2 things can be true! Players are way better today, but some of them don't be defensive. Gil want everything to be black and white. Color Gilbert 😂
Gil in this mode turns into Lonzo from training day, (you been planning this all day, I been planning this all week son!!)
21:58 that is not true....Defense is more about intelligence and discipline than effort....some of it is also raw athleticism....i have seen plenty of people and teams give honest effort and get WHOOPED. You need a plan on defense.
Love how McCants was garnetts little boy in Minnesota and now McCants acts like he’s tough. His mindset allowed him to flame out and I love it
GIL IS 100% Spot on - BUT - THIS IS THE PROBLEM - freedom of movement - enforcement against defensive holding and hand-checking, allowing offensive players more space and opportunities to score. The fact you can't cut your man off, is one of the reasons why LUKA can dominate the way he does.
They are so informative about basketball. When they start talking about rolling and “hard fronts” I really wish they would consider adding visual effects maybe even a white board to show the people their perspective.
Jokic still cooking
Mcants is wrong - everyone can shoot tf
It's hard to play d when you have to stay on a 3 point shooter and that's everyone gil is right
I agree with McCants. The players may be more athletic now then back then. So why can't you play better defense then. The game is more open now but you still have to play Defense They're is No defense now. And Is hard to watch. Game is not the same at all anymore.
Gilbert yells when he’s wrong. Y’all missed it, McCants simply said ball pressure. That’s it plain and simple, ball pressure changes everything about your offense
I agree with Rashad like they’re all definitely ways you can stop a man for somebody else to beat you for somebody else to put up 25,16 and 16 like the defensive scheme just looked the same until playoff time
Gil said fifteen years later what you think they decided to do!! (Dam he good) Eddie Murphy voice from Coming to America!!
"unless your coach say don't come off Curry" LOOOOOOOOOOL
This conversation was over 2 minutes into it!! There's players on the floor now that you can't leave so where is the help coming from?
Sometimes older players don't wanna keep it real
This show is always entertaining when Mccants is in attendance! He has no problem challenging Gil
Wtf is Gil talking about, Kukoc would be killing in this league right now he is just being dishonest.
10:48 you just made his point back then it was just 1 team and now it 20+ teams that can do it now
