The difference is the wizards weren’t winning anything. Or take it like this 30 extra shots are being “wasted“ and they are still scoring more. The Shot profiles may be stupid, but they are still significantly better.
Im fairly certain there is a point where shooting more than X number of 3s becomes reductive. We have clearly gone beyond that number. Shooting efficient 3s is always going to be impactful, but 50 a game is way too much.
@@thelegenedzzz468until a team shoots 25 and outscores you by shooting higher percentage shots. There will be an equilibrium at some point. More 3s will be shot that previous eras but not at the clip they’re being shot at now.
Honestly, watching the Olympics was such a relief. Reminded me of the NBA use to be. Team USA didn't shoot that many 3's because it was a completely different game. That was such fun basketball to watch. Seemed like traditional basketball. Shooting a ton of 3's every now and then isn't bad, but when it's every game, it gets boring to watch. Adam Silver needs to allow players to be a little more physical then without being scared to get a foul.
@@killout18 After looking at the stats, Steph was shooting most of their 3's. My whole point is that the game wasn't just players running and shooting 3's all game. It looked way more exciting to watch
Al Horford didn't shoot any threes until the later part of his career. Same with Brook Lopez. They literally extended their careers by learning how to shoot threes effectively.
Stats say otherwise. They always shot 3s they just didn't shoot as many. Just like batum. Which makes Chris Paul more impressive for a undersized guard that don't shoot 3s as much and he's still wanted by NBA teams
@@mambamentality5080Bruh…Al Horford averaged 0.5 attempts from three his 1st 8 seasons in the NBA lol…can you actually know the stats before speaking? 😂😂😂
What does that have to do what Gil is saying though? His point is the players and teams should focus on what they are best at, not just shooting 3s all the time and hope for the best.
to be fair, advanced analytics say that teams should be shooting a lot more 2s. The numbers say that Steph should shoot as much as steph wants, but a big who averages 55% in the paint is more valuable than 90% of 3 point shooters in the nba. The league just has blinders on rn fsr. It isn't all or nothing. I, personally, think the 3 point line should still be moved back a little bit regardless. Games boring to watch. Like you said.
Their point is not valid at all. Points per game is not a measure of offensive effectiveness, it's mostly a measure of pace. Celtics offense is historically efficient, but they play a much slower pace, so they score less points per game than teams from the 50s who shot ass from the field but had twice as many total possessions.
The forward gets the offensive rebound after a 3pts shot attempt and then pass it back for another 3pts shot instead of a simple mid jumper while opened. That’s killing the game.
@blinblinthing so how long will it take for that player to become a ok shooter? What will his role be until he gets that shot to be respected? Are you willing to move your big away from the basket for 3's instead of rebounds and put backs? Brandon just be talking without much thought to what is coming out of his mouth.!

@ you said a whole bunch of nothing lol. The warriors turned into the spurs on roids, the celtics came along and are like the warriors, there’s going to be a team that comes along and as close to the Celtics as can be because it’s proven you can win this way. Never said they’ll be an exact copy because the Celtics although similar to those warriors aren’t a carbon copy. And teams are already trying to play like them sure but none of them are as effective as they are. Boston tried playing similarly to warriors for years only to recently be here. They’ll be a team that comes close to matching Boston’s production eventually.
You live and die by the 3. They will end up like the Rockets at some point. Go dry at the most inopportune time. Rockets missed 27 in a row in the playoffs... We are only 18-19 games in. Let it play out.
These guys didn't mention spacing, that's why no one stands inside the 3 point lines, they should have more post up players but that would make the game even more boring
Boston as a squad is a team FULL of guys that can Dribble, Pass, and Shoot in every position. We cant talk about some guy from 2004 that isnt a shooter and compare him to anyone on that team. Or letting Andre Drummond Shoot 3s. No you play to your strengths. Giannis is a top scorer using mainly 2s because hes a 7Ft Super Athlete Freight Train coming down at you in the lane. Im sure if more people were built like him, then they wouldnt need to shoot. Wemby for instance should probably shoot less because he should play for his strengths more. Which is length and vertical threat. Maybe hover more around 6.5 3s game. Still a Threat, but uses his strength in twos more.
Theirs a gang of players built like Gianni's shooting 3s ... And Giannis went in the gym to get that way, other guys trainers are telling them stay skinny and be like Durant
@mambamentality5080 Yes Giannis earned his physique. The hieght and length is natural talent but the power and speed he earned. But thats the point, he played to his strength of height/length and improved it by adding speed and power. The same could be said for Derrick White and Payton Pritchard. They are both decent small but very quick guards. They play for their speed and dribble ability, but the 3 ball makes them twice as lethal. Especailly since they both shoot over 40% from 3. I just want teams playing to thier strengths. Like i dont want jokic or embiid throwing up 10 3s a game for an example because their strength is size+skill

If you watch the 80s or even 90s, the game wasn't "physical" in that sense, it was poor defense, people confuse the stand outs with the norm. Guys like Bill Laimbeer was decent defensively but often would straight up closeline you in the air not even going for the ball. That's not the type of "physical" play that belongs in the game, as funny as it is and I love watching those "highlights" or rewatching those games, what they were doing was senseless a lot of the time.

@@theoneaboveall6768 I agree with fining flopping if you're caught they already give a tech for it. Hand checking just means you're bad a defense, if you need to use your hands to try and stop an offensive player instead of using your footwork to guide him, that just shows the lack of defensive skill. Moving the 3pt line back simply penalises players for being better and more efficient from outside. So what we're essentially saying is... Players have become too skilled offensively so let's find ways to punish them... I want the game to improve too but I don't think this is the way
3:16 It's actually more like 60 years which might as well be the entire life of the NBA! It's so frustrating to watch teams chuck up so many 3PA's with the floor so spread out and not even one person trying to dive into the paint to at least collapse the defense to create mid-range options 🤦♂
Here is why the 3 dominates. Take 1 team for example, the Cavs, as of Nov 20, 2024: 2 pt fg % ===> 51.1% ===> 100 shots ===> 102.2 pts 3 pt fg % ===> 40.2% ===> 100 shots ===> 120.6 pts See that extra 18.4 points simply by taking 3's instead of 2's? That's why so many 3's are going up and there's going to be more.
No, the 51% fg overall are impacted by the 40%.... for 2pt attempts within 12ft from the rim they probably avg 64% so that's 128 points out of 100 attempts... DAMN YOU STUPID
Terrible analogy because no team would have an average of 40% per season. Especially if you only jack up threes, means quality of them go down and they become more difficult
The point is if shots are falling they are damn near unbeatable in a series - the season is practice for getting locked in by I be unbeatable in the playoffs. They’ve scored over 130 several times already this season.
@@jumpropedad yeah they won but they also could’ve won a couple years ago against GSW but they shot themselves out of the series. I agree with Gil on this with a passion. I can't even watch the current league. Chucking 50 3s a game and no physicality, no beautiful mid-range anymore. A beautiful fade away is one of the sweetest shots you can make.
2 current teams in the past 40 years is more indicative that more 3s works. It took 40 years to get those other 8, this year alone has 2 in the top 10. I don't care, but that is just the opposite of what it seems.
They won because the entire league is a copy paste model. Get one team to go against the grain that’s efficient from the mid range and got dogs that’ll get in the trenches and get those missed 3’s off the glass and the 3 attempts will drop. Winning a championship doesn’t dismiss that the league is in a bad spot because there’s nothing to watch. Literally half the game is bricked 3’s. The middle of the floor is always empty and it’s just passes on the perimeter until someone FINALLY drives but even then there’s a 50/50 chance they’re just going to kick it out for yet another 3. The shit is boring
@Lnevalied different rules, and point differentials tell the real story. They're not considering the shot quality. The teams that bury the league in perimeter shooting are annihilating defenses and getting much higher quality shots than the teams just chucking the ball up after one pass.

Not to mention how the game was different in other eras. Current teams would outscore old teams like crazy Gilbert is being dumb af
Yea, Gil misleads people with numbers and stats. MJ was drafted 1984. No team from 1985-2020 scored as well as today’s teams. Also, along the lines you said, teams outside of the Alex English Nuggets team who scored a lot average 100 plus FGA per game with about 3 more turnovers per game than modern nba teams. So not only did they have about 14 more possessions per game, they on average shot a lower field goal percentage as well. That’s with less 3s. So Gil’s argument about scoring is down is “true” if you go back 40 years and watch before NBA or basketball in general blew up globally
It still don’t make him wrong. Yeah the 60s was a completely different game but the reason why those games were high scoring is the exact reason those early 80s Nuggets teams were because they ran a fast break game most of the game. Which is actually kinda funny when ppl talk about how much better the conditioning & training of today’s era is (which it is) but those guys from back in the day with way less tech were running up & down the floor consistently but these teams today take a lot of terrible shots tbh. It’s basically saying the 90s and 00s were the better defense eras in the old days it was easier to score. All it is better defense now you gotta shoot outside further cuz you got bigger more athletic guys in the paint then in the 60s
And with that I.Q., this explains why y’all shoot 50 threes. There’s something called “defense” also, that contributes to low scoring and high scoring.
This is why reading and comprehension is taught in 2nd grade. Those 60’s teams had Wilt Chamberlain, who was averaging 40 to 50 points a game. He wasn’t shooting no damn jumpshots. And the 1983 Denver Nuggets shot 19% from the Three… Lol!! They made 24 threes the entire season. Do yourself a favor: read for context about things, when they sound too hard to believe.
The three pointer back in the 80's, 90's, and early 2000's was utilized only as an unexpected weapon. Players during those respective eras weren't jacking up three's the entire game. Every team had different specialists too. There was the three point specialist, defensive specialist, etc. None of those dynamics exist within the sport of basketball anymore.

Agreed, but Iman Shumpert has said (and I've always agreed) that Lebron actually changed the league because while teaming up with stars, if Lebron and the Cavs would have beat GS that first year, the narrative that a jump shooting team couldn't win a championship would've continued and teams may have looked more like the Cavs than GS. Most analysts were still saying that during that GS 1st championship run.
@Teek4Tat , Yes, it kinda was because GS had two of the best 3pt shooters on their team, along with many others, and decided to play a style of basketball that was 3pt dominant and they became the team to beat as they got better and won their first championship. The lowest-scoring game in NBA history occurred on November 22, 1950, between the Fort Wayne Pistons and the Minneapolis Lakers. The final score was 19-18 in favor of the Pistons. This game is notable not only for the low score but also because it reflected the era's playing style, which emphasized defense and featured a slower pace. Finally a take that makes sense!!! This should put a stop to the criticism of the physical game. Tired of hearing they stopped the physical play to get more scoring! The top scoring teams in history were physical and shot no threes! 😂

Ray Allen shot 48% from 2 and 40% from 3. In order for him to mathematically "score more points" shooting from 2P range, he would need to shoot them all at an average of 60% clip just to match his output at 40% from 3. So, there's that....

It's crazy to me how many seasons of NBA play are on this couch and not one of these dudes knows what "pace" is. Easy to score a billion points per game when the pace is insane. These offenses are more efficient on a points per possession basis. But they operate at a much slower pace than teams from the 50s, so of course 1950s teams scored more points per game.
Spot on. It's just a math problem for teams these days and the math says a three is better. If the NBA allows more physical play, maybe get rid of some antiquated rules that discourage post play that could help restore balance. Threes are cool and all but dunks (and blocks) are way more exciting, if that's the goal. It's just way too easy for range-y shooters to evade defense. On the rules to tweak: 3 seconds is one - who cares if a big lives in the paint if teams are shooting 50 threes per game. It also stops the flow of the game for a tech ft which isn't interesting at alI. If they are obsessed with the 3-second call, they should move the 3-second rule out to the wings so shooters can't camp out as easily waiting for an easy kick out while the defensive center is playing musical chairs. I'd rather just get rid of the concept altogether. It feels like a rule designed to stop Wilt Chamberlain or other athletically/genetically gifted freak-shows (I use this as a term of endearment) from dominating teams full of 6"2' guys, and that hasn't been a thing for a long time.
Every old school team you named were absolutely loaded with the best talent in the league against guys who weren't qualified to be their water boys😂The gap between those teams and the rest of the league was ridiculous. Here’s an easy solution. Move the 3 point line back to 24 feet and Adam silver must send out a mandate to referees to call the game correctly and not call fouls when a guy sneezes or coughs on another player, let them play defense. If the offensive player initiates contact it should either be a no call or an offensive foul not two free throws
Europeans brought the 3 pt shot. The 3 pt shot is not American basketball. The 3 pt line is for non-athletic players who could not operate in the key. Yes, I said it. End the 3 pt shot. The 3 pt shot is not American Original Basketball.

The celtics would run all those teams they mentioned out of the gym💀
Nope! Too many fastbreak pts given up.!
Their point is not valid at all. Points per game is not a measure of offensive effectiveness, it's mostly a measure of pace. Celtics offense is historically efficient, but they play a much slower pace, so they score less points per game than teams from the 50s who shot ass from the field but had twice as many total possessions.
The league is shooting the HIGHEST percentage ever from 3. That fact got glossed over.
@kingshabazz1310 if you shoot more your average will go up. But scoring is down.

I went back and watched the 2004 ECF between the Pacers-Pistons and the offenses were running so much iso and taking bad shots. 3 pt fg % ===> 40.2% ===> 100 shots ===> 120.6 pts

Most analysts were still saying that during that GS 1st championship run.
Mark Jackson, Steph's old coach, was the first to say this publicly and at the time got criticized for it a lot.

All teams are now looking for 3pt shooting, and even bigs are encouraged to take at least a few a game.
The OP was spot on and like I said even Mark Jackson and other ex NBA players are getting louder and louder about too many 3s being taken and it actually was because of Curry and GS, they changed the game.
It's happened before with NBA players, and all-time great/unstoppable forces will change the game, and new rules will have to be put in place to rebalance things out again. Get your knowledge and understanding up, bro. It's facts over feelings. You're obviously emotional about this, and logic and reason is lost on you..
I’ve been saying these for a long time. 80% from 2 is better than 35% from 3. Olajuwon, Shaq, Robinson, and centers of yesteryear would destroy this nba
The will be in debt once LeBron, KD, and Steph retires, it's gonna look like the NCAA. They are really messing the game up, No Vets, can't really play defense, No Defense Stoppers anymore, trying to make the European player's takeover etc. The NBA sucks, not the player's the People making these decisions suck.
That’s because they play soft ass rotate defense. If defense was able to be more physical they would shoot less and there would be less switching. Only the special ones would require a switch or double team.
Watch my rockets. They terror twins will make you fall in love with defence again.
@oblockcertified7787 One of the few teams I like to watch, them The Kings, OKC, Boston, Minnesota.
@@youngboy2140 That's my point, it's the rule changes That's messing up the game. Basketball should be universal and more like the FIBA rules except for the ball in the cylinder rule.
@@Flawda_marlon561 imo Boston chuck up too many threes. Ant used to be more fun to watch with his inside game but he’s also settling. It’s the talent. Everyone can shoot these days do everyone does. It’s watering down the product
KG said it recently back then it was about efficiency shots now it’s about volume shooting
Keyon face at 17:51 😂

Since we are complaining that role players shouldnt be shooting 3's, Ray Allen, one of the best 3 pointers, shoot 5 3's per game on 40.0% shooting. Derrick white, A ROLE PLAYER, shoots 9 3's a game ON 41.3%. League is changing yall. Whether you like it or not (I hate it just to be clear), the 3 line is the new era.
These guys don’t understand the difference between PPG and PPP. They also are acting like all of those twos they are screaming for are layups. A lot of those twos they was shooting was contested mid ranges.
They need to move it back
Edit: Somebody should be fired all these 3s and still losing
If you aren't taking 3s, sounds like less ball movement and a slower scoring tempo. I doubt that;'s gonna be a winning formula.
Also, those HArden / Wade and KObe fouls they used to call don't happen no more.
😂 ball movement isn't standing up in the corner waiting for someone to pass u the ball, half the league ain't steph, klay, kd ,stop it game is so trash
@@Kinggoat24-s1k how can ball movement be the person without the ball bruh? Quit letting hate talk, it's never a good look.
If the ball handler drew a double team or collapsed the defense etc the ball needs to go to who has the higher percentage shot, simple.
If the person you watched didn't have range to be in the corner, that's on him, not the people who do today.
@@blinblinthingbody movement goes hand and hand with ball movement. If a player stands in the corner and has an open cut to the basket. I am not giving him the ball. Grow some nuts and dive hard to the damn basket.
@@kahmalmason5919Off-ball movement ain’t just cutting to the rim.
Watch Steph curry, the greatest 3 point shooter coincidentally has the best off-ball movement too. Does Steph just cut to the basket or does he sprint around the perimeter using screens?
Generating 3s ain’t just standing in the corner…..watch the Celtics off-ball. There’s tons of movement……
Brandon saying “ it’s the mentality”
Gil and Kenyon saying “naw it’s the skills”
😅😅😅
Brandon is out of his mind dawg
Gil I totally agree with you. Too many 3’s being shot every game! I’ve been an NBA fan for over 40 years and I hate the way the game is being played now. I see 2 on 1 and 3 on 2 fast breaks all the time and instead of getting the lay up they settle for a 3. Only a few players per team should be shooting them not everybody! Shape up NBA!!
B.Jennings logic blows my mind.
The combined total of 37 points remains the lowest in NBA history.
It was no shot clock, that's why the score was low. After that, they put in the shot clock.
The combined score of 37 points is how many points LeBron was averaging against McCants
@@bmac7909 in order for that to be a valid argument- you would need to check the highest scoring game in that area
@@bmac7909 Wilt scored 100 in that era.
@@flatrateinspections6387 Not necessarily, because teams will violate and abuse rules or lack therof if they can 😂Just because one or two violates, doesn't mean everyone else would.
This why I only can watch teams like okc I fw jaylen Williams and shai keeping the midrange game aliveeeee
Take 10 3s a game at 40% chance = 12 points on average
Take 10 2s a game at 50% chance = 10 points on average
This is why they do it
Makes sense but the argument is that only 40% shooters should have the volume and I don’t think a single team is shooting 40% this year
That's dumb bro if you're looking at a basketball perspective
If you take 10 2s including layups and dunks you have a chance of getting a foul. Regardless of it's a 3 point play or not, it's a net positive because you get the other team in foul trouble and then they play less aggressive defense.
lol they’re so angry and it’s so simple 3=2*1.5
I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying that's why they do it. The Warriors legit said their analytics team did the math on it.
Finally a take that makes sense!!! This should put a stop to the criticism of the physical game. Tired of hearing they stopped the physical play to get more scoring! The top scoring teams in history were physical and shot no threes! 😂
When Gilbert heard Derrick White and Malik Beasley he was fiberglassed.
Fiberglassed or Flabbergasted?
Fiber glass is crazy work.
“GOT DAMN” so he just went straight past flabbergasted?
And was straight fiberglassed.
Now that’s something
White is a champion. Gilbert aint.
Gilbert Arena LOSES THEIR MIND over anything
What they're not accounting for is the pace of play. In the 2000s they were using the whole 24 shot clock and the shot clock reset to 24 off a miss and offensive rebound.
3’s are the players just wanting to play easy and avoid contact. They’d have to work harder and be more aggressive to shoot more 2’s.
To be fair, Malik Beasley is shooting 39% from 3 and Derrick White is shooting 42% from 3.
😂 they're also shooting like 10 at least. Ray Allen would be number 1 or 2 on three still . He took 4/6 ...
EXACTLY!! Cade and Jaden Ivey need spacing. They don’t need him shooting mid range jump shots
@@5lime9ordo He may have averaged more per game if he converted some more of his 2pt shots to 3pt shots. 35% FG% from 3 beats 50% FG% from 2, so saying a player would score more points if they took more shorter range shots only bears out if they think their 2P% would be significantly higher than their 3P%, enough to make the math fall in favor. Ray Allen shot 48% from 2 and 40% from 3. In order for him to mathematically "score more points" shooting from 2P range, he would need to shoot them all at an average of 60% clip just to match his output at 40% from 3. So, there's that....
@@riffsthatkill2180my answer to that is look at the top bucket getters in NBA history. LeBron most of his pts came off of middys and dunks. Kareem shot like 2 3's his whole career.
@@kahmalmason5919All that is before curry. Look at Bron today, he been averaging 5+ attempts from 3 for like 8 straight years. Post scorers like Brook Lopez and Al Horford realized they were going to be out of the league if they didn’t learn to adapt to modern offenses and shoot 3s.
Idk why it’s so hard for people to admit that the 3 point shot is simply better
Gil you should get a tablet sponsor. It would help everyone access the info they need in real time. And see it easier.
I love your honest takes. I am big fan and subscriber.
Also, When people are missing shots now, they just suck, but when someone makes it, it's too easy and no one plays defense. Come on, both can't be true.
Nah bro its literally both. This gen of players aint it at all lmao😢
@@kwall25 both bad shooters against bad defence but score more with an extended 3 pt line?
@@blinblinthingthe rules literally are designed to make offense easier by encouraging teams to shoot like this. So if you can't make shots in this era you literally are trash. That's not a hard concept to understand
Finally a good take…..I’m so happy they not defending this shit.
They are not more efficient. That’s the point. It’s amazing how somebody like you can still be dumb while not understanding what’s being said
18/50 3 pointers is the equivalent to shooting 54% as the same number of 2 pointers. This is better than the best % for any NBA's 2pt FG%.
That's like saying a team with prime LeBron, KD, Steph, and Jokic averaged 130PPG against a league mainly full of Wizards and Jazz😂No shit.
bro when Gil said role players are shooting more 3's than Ray Allen!! my mind exploded! that's insane
Y'all need to bring on someone who can argue for the new three ball era
Agreed. Brandon had the right idea but he’s not a great debater at all.
The problem is spacing and the players are so much bigger so it’s easier to defend and the mid range is a lost art as well😮
Those open 3's are easier than contested 2's.
You don't draw fouls on open threes. Those contested twos can get you easy free throws and put your opponent in foul trouble.
@ELGUAPOIV you also get hurt less.
@@bray2079yet more players are hurt now than back then

@@kellyjr22 On the Celtics?
Shooting all these 3s and their bodies fall apart the rare times they go to the rim because they don’t know how to even fall properly.
