    john oliver talking about the viola and his skill is called the confidence curve.
    when you are ignorant, you have almost no confidence, but when you get a little skill or training, you have a massive spike. as you grow, you become more aware of the gulf between you and real talent. but if you get over that, you begin to regain your confidence along with your growing skill.

      @@doubtful_seer this is actually a thing. Maybe not for wisdom- but there is a recognized and researched psychological phenomenon called “The Dunning-Kruger effect”. It observes a type of cognitive bias in which people believe that they are smarter and more capable than they really are. Essentially, low ability people do not possess the skills needed to recognize their own incompetence. Often people with a little knowledge rate their own knowledge higher than professors do on those same topics. Google it, it’s crazy

That normally takes at least 10,000 hours, over 6 working years. So when you regularly hear someone saying that he's the best at all kinds of trades, you know he's either a con man or delusional, or both.

      It's unfortunate that they segment these interactions into different videos, as the chemistry they have is only unmatched by having Jon Stewart enter the chat. That hand motion about Paramount Plus HAS to be an inside joke that only people with their perspectives can truly understand and appreciate.

      @@lyreparadox Indeed, the obnoxious E string is what drove me to the viola. Not only did the sound bother my cats, but it cut into my tender little fingers. And middle C is where it should be, in tenor clef, not on the bottom like treble clef, or the bottom like in bass, but in the middle.

      @@ppb8931 that’s kind of the inherent fallacy of the situation, due to the fact that Jon’s show was what it was BECAUSE it had Oliver, Samantha Bee, Colbert, Steve Carrell, Ed Helms, Michael Che, Rob Corddry, Josh Gad, Al Madrigal, Olivia Munn and more as correspondents... that roster was so incredibly stacked and were lead someone who allowed their creative talents to flourish! It’d be hard to get that many home-runs in the same room again!

      But when John Oliver guest hosted for Jon on The Daily Show for a few weeks(?)/months(?) I was super skeptical of that working and then he was amazing! So I watch Last Week Tonight from the start and I’ve been thrilled with it (I also love that he can say whatever words he wants to bc I feel like it’s a more honest way to communicate).
      But tbh I also LOVE Colbert and his old show and basically every other show from a Daily Show alumn.
      Jon has an impressive record lol

      I think people with diplomatic personalities play viola - it's between the ranges of violin and cello. They want balance in life.

      @@LadyPelikan yeah, well that's just it. I submit that violists are the type of people who like to play string music, but would rather not have an opinion on anything one way or another, so they choose the middle ground. At least, that's what I did (I quit after HS, though).
      I have not heard of this TwoSet thing and will look it up now.

    That's pure irony coming from one of the greatest comedians of a generation. As good as I was on my instrument during my degree program, I still wasn't half as good at music as Oliver is at comedy news.

    I played viola in high school! This made my day. I wasn’t good at it, but John Oliver is completely right! You need a viola to make the entire orchestra work. What a delightful interview!

    Reference, playing in front of people. I once played my accordan (at age 8) in a convalescence home for a recital, and an old woman tapped me on my shoulder. And she said to me, "I'm dying." Talk about tough crowd. Thanks Stephen, and John. Bless
