The Lewinsky interview was terrific. She’s a very intelligent, well-spoken, interesting, sincere, and funny young woman, and her amazing inner strength should be an inspiration to all. Bravo, John!
When I clicked on this video, I would never have thought I'd be walking away and spending the rest of my day thinking how much I admire Monica Lewinsky. That interview has completely changed what will go through my head when I hear her name from now on. I felt like applauding for her, here home alone in front of my computer.

I have become a Monica Lewinsky fan. To go through all the shaming she endured and be abled to laugh at herself shows an inner strength and character only a very few people possess.
Oh please. She's a hypocrite who continues to milk her 15 minutes of infamy and make money off the whole situation. What exactly has she done now that isn't related to her past? Nothing. All she's ever done in the decades after is get paid to rehash her story over and over, collect money for every book deal and tell-all interview. She's practically made a career out of it. D Deys I hear your opinion, and respectfully disagree. I feel that in order for punishment to be effective as a deterrent for any behavior, the punishment must fit accordingly, and MUST END with some acknowledgement that the punishment received was related directly to the actions or behaviors exhibited by that individual, not as a result of the individual themselves. But this is the internet, and there will always be differing opinions, so my hope is that as the discussion of Ms. Lewinsky inevitably continues, we can remember that it was the actions of two grown adult human beings that the nation disagreed with, not one named individual.
@@happyplace8452 Punishment is a price to be paid from the perpetrator for damages done - in this case, Lewinsky hurt the president's marriage, and she hurt the country's sense of dignity and pride. She has agency and was intelligent enough to be at the position she was with the president - she knew what she was doing and what would happen if she was caught. She should be miserable and be stripped of US citizenship - not exalted on these sorts of shows as the commenters here see her as. And Bill Clinton should be punished much more than he was, too. It's not just her at fault.
She was a young woman working for the most powerfull man in the world, it isn't exactly weird that she fell for him. Clinton is to blame for not keeping it in his pants.
I'm so impressed with Monica. It's amazing she didn't turn to drugs or alcohol or even commit suicide. What a strong will and character. Also, I enjoyed how serious he took the interview. Shame on all the people like Jay Leno who set out to just ruin her life. Disgusting "entertainment".

The “worst aunt” thing reminds me a lot of the “hot McDonald’s coffee” lawsuit. It’s an interesting story that people should look into but basically. The woman almost died from 3rd degree burns from her coffee (which turned out to be just under boiling). She didn’t want to sue but they only gave her $800 for the $20000 out of pocket expenses (or something like that). And it happened to about 700 other people. In the lawsuit, (if I remember correctly) the main reason the jury sided with the woman was because McDonalds basically treated the 700 affected people as a number instead of people. The woman actually settled for less than what was settled in court. Then McDonalds and other companies dragged her name through the mud basically to discourage people from sueing them.
Yea and I’m glad this is starting to get out there, I has always heard the standard “lol stupid lady drops normal coffee and brain dead jury gives her gazillions” but the truth is she was BADLY injured and wouldn’t have sued had McDs have just paid her medical costs. The real narrative needs to get more traction than the fake version.
I was fortunate enough to meet her on a chance encounter then exchanged a few messages on Facebook. She is every bit as nice and sweet as it seems she is and it broke my heart to think of what happened to her. Monica and I are about the same age and back in the 90's, I laughed at the Monica jokes along with everyone else. I was part of the problem. The today version of me is very unhappy with the 90's version of me.
Sweet person who engaged in an affair with a married man. Not so sweet. I knew at 22 not to have sex with married people. She knew what she was doing was wrong, she chased the fame and she got it. Then she cried after she found out that people judged her for her actions. I have little empathy for her.
@@MarkEliasGrant - I surely hope you are never in a position where you are forever judged over something that happened 30 years ago. Besides, you are forgetting the massive power imbalance between the President and an intern. But hey, sit back on your laurels as you've never made a mistake, never grew from them, and haven't changed one iota in decades.
"Think of the dumbest thing you did when you were young. Not the dumbest thing you got Caught doing- the dumbest thing you Did" What a hilariously effective way to engender empathy!
In my friend group there was a public shaming/ostracism and I was reluctant to participate because it seemed unfair. One of the (not targeted) friends was mad at me for not joining in the dog pile and said I had an obligation to call out anyone who had done something bad. I had to remind him of the similarly bad things he had done and never got caught for that he told me about in confidence, and ask if he really meant what he just said. He changed his mind quickly.
Same reason everyone couldn't get passed Hillary's failings despite Trump clearly being 10x worse in the same respects. America is sexist, It loves to see the downfall of a powerful woman.
ThatOneGirl I very much agree with your first paragraph. How society views the different genders experiencing the same event is usually sexist. And she most assuredly lost respect and decency from many people, unfairly. But I think Clinton did too...certainly not to her extent, but I know plenty of people that think he is an indecent pig who did something extremely wrong. And rightfully so. But that statement took me aback as well....no one asked if he was going to change his name. That’s telling.
@ThatOneGirl Idk if I would characterize it as the same mistake. Bill was married, was a prominent public figure, and also had an insane power disparity over her. To my memory she has said that the encounter was consensual, but one person is abusing a ton of public trust and his office, and is setting a terrible precedent of behavior. Monica on the other hand was a completely private figure before any of this happened, and was subordinate to Bill. I would say she made a mistake, but far less of one than Bill, but paid for it with one of the most infamous public shaming events in history.
@@Dliciousization Bill should have gotten it worse than Monica. The most powerful man at the time making such a blunder should have been met with at least the level Monica did. But the media turned their attention to Monica instead. This was completely the fault of the media. And we still haven't learned this lesson; letting media run wild with zero consequences.
@ThatOneGirl I mean your right but bill already had a name. His public image was vibrant. So this blemish was small. Monica's public image was the blemish. She didn't have a public image until this point. This is a contributing factor. Also dude's really aren't as cool with cheating as you seem to be saying. It's not just fine in most circles. It is definitely rarely supported. But generally their relationship with their partner is not something discussed it's not part of your relationship. So you don't really judge them one way or another for it. Kind of like if your friend constantly bragged about being able to slack off at work. That is not a demension of thier life that your relationship with them intersects with. Even tho debatable its definitely wrong they are not holding up thier end of a agreement. I get that its a bit apples and oranges with severity but the same idea.

I think I’ve come to realize why LWT is so successful, John and his team know when to joke and when to be serious. Throughout most of the interview he was serious and let Monica set the tone and make most of the jokes, which brought the point home in a respectful but fun way.
It's also amazing how she got to have the [literal] last laugh and last word here. I'm happy to see that shift happening in her life as well. It's about time she gets to do that!
Hi I'm 2 years late to your comment but I think you really hit the nail on the head, and it's something they deserve to be praised and recognized for. LWT is a comedy show, yes, but it never prioritizes the comedy. They are walking a very thin line to balance addressing serious issues respectfully and keeping people laughing and engaged and it is very impressive how well they are managing that. And they do it (almost) every week.
When this happened I was around 10 I think, so I had barely a clue what this was about. I do recall my mom changing the channel when the Dutch news talked about it once again and making a remark along the lines of "Why are they trying to make it all her fault...good god...He should not have started it in the first place but somehow he is fine!" That always stuck with me.
Maybe if she wasn’t so proud about it. Saving that dress, she planned to tell about it at sometime. If she was so in love with Bill, she would if stayed quiet.
Good for you John for helping to change the narrative with Monica Lewinsky and her story. Big shout out to her! Thanks again John for letting us know the new chapter in her life.
Apparently 635 people actually give a fuck about what Monica Lewisnky is doing. Astounding. I have not wasted a single second of thought on what that woman is doing these days and idky anyone else would either.

As a father to two daughters, I cannot fathom the pain of one of mine going through what Miss Lewinsky did. However, I also cannot fathom the pride your family must feel in you. You are an inspiration. Thank you.
I'm back here at this video after the Imane khalif controversy. There was a woman that didn't deserve the interventional harassment campaign she experienced.
She gained a fan with this highly personal, mature, graceful and humorous interview by a young woman who has turned her life into something positive. Kudos.
Harvey J. Putterbaugh Calm your horses. She wasn’t an innocent young girl falling in love. She took that intern job with the plan to seduce Bill Clinton and spoke to friends about her intention. And she had no class at all doing what she did. It was despicable no matter what she says today.
Celisar1 yeah. Crafty little femme fatale who at 23 years of age "seduced" 49 year president of the US. Skills, huh. Who had the moral imperative to control the relationship,
Harvey J. Putterbaugh Well, she told her friends she wanted to do that beforehand. And it’s not difficult to initiate sex with any man, regardless age or social status.
@@Celisar1 That doesn't make her the only one at fault here. A man, the president, who was over twice her age, married and *the president* still partook in that relationship. That story about the aunt should have been framed as “Aunt sues nephew as a last resort to pay medical bills”. How shameful is it that people have to go to that length just to pay for their healthcare. That would never happen anywhere else in the developed world.
Welcome to America. I would be dead, or my parents would still be paying my medical bills. Because in 1985 I had two open heart surgeries when I was less than a year old for both. Both cost over $150k in 84 money. From what I have gathered both surgeries were almost experimental at the time. The only reason they stayed afloat was they had a "Cadillac Plan" by today's standards. Where they took a 20 year pay cut for good coverage via the IBEW.
Sum Arbor I live in Canada. My cousin was born with a heart condition and has had 4 open heart surgeries in his lifetime... hasn’t cost my aunt and uncle a dime. My uncle owns his own business, so he definitely would have been bankrupt down in the States. I understand where you’re coming from. Thank god your parents had a good insurance plan!

I've been hearing of Monica Lewinsky since i'm a kid, yet never heard her speak (not from US). We were used to see her in tears and stressful environments, but there she is, cheerful and strong, which is very refreshing.
I experienced public shaming in my hometown during my teen years and was ostracized by everyone I knew. The number of times I thought of taking myself out, it’s a miracle it didn’t happen. Look at what Lewinsky made of herself, of her horrific experience- she probably felt the same way so many times, but she’s still here, and now she stands as an example for how to endure this type of experience and recover. She’s a role model. Never discount your own trial and the value that it can provide to others. It heals me to listen to her.
I thankfully had my friends as a safe harbor and went to a big school, but I was also a pretty popular target for shame and harassment. Her words meant a lot to me too.
@@emilyrasputini guess if i'd have had friends or family as a safe harbor for anything i went through I might feel the same as you and oop. Just had to comment on the defining factor; nothing meant by it.
Ms. Lewinsky, you kick so much ass. I was 16 when all that shit hit the fan and I never understood why Clinton got treated so much better than you. HE was the one in control, the mentor that took advantage of a 22 y/o girl. He should've been shamed because of the situation, and if he had been a REAL man, he would've said as much, it told peeps to lay off of you, ya know? Great interview! Fantastic segment!
Technically, he was treated better, but he was also treated worse in some ways. You have to understand that there was the public shaming and then there was the political maneuvers. Society is sexist, so of course it is the slut's fault. They also blamed Hilary for not keeping Bill satisfied. Spend more time in the kitchen and what not. He had a whole lot more enemies than her in the world of politics though. His enemies would attack her in order to harm him. Hell, they tried to impeach him for it which is essentially how all the details were revealed to the public. In terms of being a man, it is equally sexist to assert that a REAL man should take the hit for the woman. And as I pointed out above, he was constantly being attacked back then; in some regards, even worse than her. However, he is a public figure and has long gotten used to the spotlight and the attacks that come with it. She was just some 22 year old intern. His defense of her would not have helped the situation at all. In fact, his detractors would just point out that he is siding with the mistress over the wife which is all the more reason to impeach him. And her detractors would just point out that she is still trying to break the Clintons apart by getting him to side with her. Clinton is a philanderer. Hilary knew this long before Lewinsky. If this matter had been settled privately, I doubt he would have apologized to her. There is no personal reason for him to apologize to her (based on his past behavior). The only reason he apologized publicly back then was that she was dragged into the spotlight simply because of who he is. I doubt he feels bad for seducing all those women (since he did it so many times despite being caught early on), so the only reason I can think of for his public apology was, in fact, for dragging her down with him.
I'm from England so I only saw the whole ordeal from an outside perspective. Can any American's explain why this was such a big scandal? I could understand if it was about people having a problem with the power dynamics of their relationship and how Clinton used the MASSIVE power disparity in their working relationship to take advantage of a naive young woman, but that really didn't seem to be the case. I mean, considering how awfully Lewinsky was vilified at the time it seemed like Americans were just as pissed at her as they were at him, which I don't really understand. YES, she was an adult who knowingly entered into an adulterous relationship which is definitely wrong, but it seemed like Americans thought she was some sort of traitor to the country and had somehow destroyed Clinton's ability to carry out his job as president. What the hell does having an affair have to do with a person's ability to make presidential decisions?? Is America really that uncomfortable and puritanical about sex...?
@@LoganBluth I think it was because of the politics. Democrats were angry because the scandal caused their president to step down, and the Republicans kept drilling at the issue because the love seeing a democratic president mess up. People were also upset with Lewinsky because Bill Clinton was married I guess, although in modern day views Bill should've been held far more accountable than Lewinsky considering it was his marriage.
@@percabethlumity Thanks for the reply, that makes sense about it being largely driven by the two political parties being as vindictive to each other as possible. But yeah, while Lewinsky definitely did wrong by having an affair with a married man, Clinton was the far more morally reprehensible of the two. Also, as far as I can tell a significant proportion of America is christian and they take their religion VERY seriously. Surely they should all have been far more angry at Clinton due to him breaking his marriage vows. Lewinsky never made any vows to god, of whoever.
“Nobody has ever asked him did he think he should change his name” PERIOD. The whole scandal was based on misogyny, attacking Monica when Clinton was the married one who was President and undoubtedly had a position of power over her. She’s so graceful and charming. All the best to her.
She is amazing! If you listen to Slate’s podcast “slowburn” on Clinton’s impeachment you will be amazed by her strength and by how awful everyone was to her all of these years
privatefaces very funny that he used an example from over 20 years ago. Very fascinating that he didn’t bring the countless people who have been harassed by liberals in the past 5 years alone. There’s an entire book called so you’re been publicly shamed by Ron Johnson where he gives many relevant examples. This video is a massive waste of time
Actually one of the best episodes, as it reveals so much about the heart and soul and core principles of the show, which is one reason why I enjoy watching it.
What gets me is that people have been making fun of a young woman who was in a vulnerable situation& in some ways was naive, but not a much older & affluent man. I’m so proud of Monica, she’s come so far & is now helping people
I've always loved Monica and even as a kid I knew what she was going through was fucked up. I'd ask grown adults why she was being targeted when this should be the President's scandal, not her. She wasn't even married. It made no sense. It was just straight bullying.
Yeah, it was totaly messed up how she chased clout and then got it. Y'know by bragging to her co-workers nonstop about the affair until another spiteful and jealous witch recorded her and also by never washing and saving the dress Bill came on. She wanted to be the next Marylin Monroe but instead just became Marylin Monhoe. Poor her.
@@casucasueq4479 Repeat after me: Victim blaming is simply a form of denial. She screwed up, and she has owned and admitted that she did so. Her public punishment for her public flaws has far exceeded any reasonable balanced response. For what she did in her 20's? That deserves some condemnation. Her response in her 40's has been far more about protecting others who might be subject to cruel and unusual public pillory for whatever flaw real or imagined, and for that I applaud her. In an ideal world you do the crime, you do the time, and then we all move on. But that doesn't seem a standard equally applied.
@@casucasueq4479 this is blatant sexism on every level, what she endured. @@jimbis1313 Hello, I would like to offer a perspective. Imagine you are an average 22 year old who made one bad decision that irrevocably changed your life. Imagine that, without your consent or intention, your personal privacy vanished on a global scale. Imagine being subject to a global community judging you relentlessly for every aspect of your life, and shoving your worst decision down your throat endlessly. You call that her first 15 minutes of fame. I'd call that years of unwanted pain and humiliation. And after going through all of this, she made a decision. She decided she wasn't going to hide, she was going to take her power back. She would accept that her personal privacy as an individual was gone, so she would actively come back to the public stage, but this time on purpose, and this time with a mission. I could also imagine it's a way for her to keep healing. As for being fake with her appearance... if you were listening, she admitted that she has vanity now because of the merciless judgment of her physical appearance. She didn't hide the fact that she puts a lot of effort into how she looks, and by using the word 'vanity', she was admitting that it is a shallow thing to put a lot of effort into. I don't know if you have been bullied before, and if you have, to what extent. But I do know what I have been through, and others I know. While she did not state any concrete plans on tackling bullying, you truly missed something important. Here is a person who was bullied by a global community, and instead of trying to hide, she arose with the intention to fight. With the time they were allotted, I think they did the best thing they could have done in delivering a message to us. "How did you survive all of it?", is a question that I believe a hell of a lot of people benefited hearing answered.

Also, added couple of good impressions, like witty and genuinely nice. I always felt a sense of injustice about her, but now is even stronger. I wish her all the best.
It's not really injustice, she did what she did. If she didn't want public shame, then maybe she shouldn't have been a side chick to the most famous man on earth at the time.
She was really young tho. Like, I have to research it, but at 22 most people are barely out of college, starting life, with very little real world experience. Plus power dynamics and all that. She probably would've been screwed over regardless.
The question could also be "Think of the dumbest thing you did this morning" and Tucker would nervously glance at his Roomba and gracelessly change the subject.
Damn! This Interview was very strong. Frankly, I never thought about, what she even COULD do after a shit storm like this... That she survived it all and is now using her experience to help others, is such a great move, just wow! Monica, you are an inspiration!

It’s a wonderful sentiment and true. Unfortunately anyone who hated the clintons or could make money off of Monica’s pain, shame, and embarrassment never considered her. American culture hasn’t changed in that schadenfreude is still everyone’s preferred form of hate. I think one of the saddest things about the whole aunt scenario is that we live in a society where it's considered normal and reasonable that hurting ones wrist should cost a person $127,000.
The story didn't blow up because of the price tag, it blew up because it was *_supposedly_* an aunt suing her child nephew. EDIT: I also think it's sad we live in a society where people just want to clap back, apparently without even thinking through what they're saying.
And you have to fake sue your nephew and get death threats because you can’t pay for your healthcare! It’s a damn shame! But I guess as long as Big pharma and insurance companies and Wall Street and our own government hold us hostage at least we have John Oliver to watch to make us feel a tad better!
Last Week Tonight again turns a dumpster fire into an opportunity to learn a life lesson. Not holding my breath that everyone will "get it"... then again, most people can be & are okay with being asleep at the wheel when it comes to social, ethical issues and well most important matters. Don't stop John & Co. Bravo. BRAVO!I!

Monica thank you for your grace and strength. You just may have saved someone’s life who is being bullied when they are young. Very impressed by your ability to rise above ❤
I don't think I've heard John laugh so purely as he did when Monica said "Thank you, Alvin." That was incredibly funny, and I'm actually very happy that she's so entertaining and tough after all this.
Completely agree with you. The only other time I can think of was in an interview between him and Russell Howard. Very much recommend it, John Oliver gets tickled
Reminds me of Jon Stewart's pure laughter when he was interviewing Malala: just flattered this person endured so much, and is gracing you with their presence and jokes!
Look up the story of the woman that sued McDonalds after being burnt by coffee for another example - she only sued for medical costs, required skin grafts, tried to get them to lower their temperatures, etc, but was mocked pretty much universally.
My take on this example is that the internet would have been helping her a lot, we heard about her even here in Sweden, and mostly by ear to mouth. So almost every detail was lost, just "she thought the coffee was too hot, so she sued" lol lol lol coffee is supposed to be hot, stupid Americans. Now if you google this, the first thing popping up is explaining why she sued, the real story.
The misinformation was a smear campaign funded by big companies pretending to be grass roots movements with titles such as Citizens Against Frivolous Lawsuits
Between this interrview, the one with Pepe Julian Onzima and especially the one he did with Anita Hill on sexual harrassment, my respect for Oliver - which was damn high to begin with - has skyrocketed. I know plenty of 18-22 year olds who aren't any version of idiots. Some are soldiers, some are single parents, some grew up bounced around in foster care and work hard to build a life that matters... I hate this narrative being spun by Miss Lewinsky that her actions were due to her youth. She wasn't just being promiscuous with any old married guy-- it was the US President... how she didn't worry that they might get caught is a wonder to me. The fact that ultra conservative Christians used it to cast a shadow on Mrs. Clinton seems incredibly unfair in my opinion.

Oh really. First of all, Clinton is a lying sleaze. Second of all, there was a pair of them in it. She flashed her Thong at him to get his attention. And being a stupid, stupid led by the dick man, of COURSE that got his attention. She has ridden this subsequent fame train until the wheels fell off. X rated, tell all bios. Turning up at Vanity Fair Oscar Party in 2001, half a decade after the scandal. She has made millions from her notoriety, but since #metoo, has changed her narrative to me=survivor of sexual abuse which is a fucking slap in the face to ACTUAL assault victims. She was a willing sexual partner who participated in an affair with a married man. Stop treating this woman as a victim. My ass she is.
@@paulinegallagher7821 it's not that she's a victim of sexual abuse. I know as well as most people that a dude and chick get time they will get down. No one deserves to ever be treated like a peace of shit for something they done when they were young. I'm sure she went into it with open eyes but 10years later being the whore the slept with Clinton is not right and if you think it's is then I don't know what to say other than when you were young I bet you did something your not real proud of and if that was in the news and in magazines 10 or 20 years later I bet you would feel like enough is enough.

I sadly supported Bill Clinton as we Dems mostly did at the time: I regret it. Both he and Monica are moral degenerates.
Yeah we should just execute everyone who’s ever had sex for the wrong reasons or disrupted committed relationships to dissuade degeneracy. @@dudeguy556 Niceguy was just saying it wasn't fair how much backlash she received not that she didn't know there would be consequences. And how do we know everything that was going through her mind at that time? Maybe she really didn't know how huge the story would become, if it ever was made public, and how much focus would remain on her instead of Bill Clinton. She was just an intern whereas Bill Clinton was the PRESIDENT and MARRIED. And people don't talk enough about the power dynamics in a relationship like that. I've seen similar incidents happen at jobs I've had where married men (mostly) in high management positions go outside of their marriage with a young employee (l7-20 years old). And what's funny is most often than not, the other employees always look down on the young women instead of the married manager who's abusing their power and fucking around outside of their relationship but I digress. The blame can't all be put on Monica especially when she's not the married party. She's not exempt from any blame but it's fair to bring her age and her position as an intern, the power dynamics, into conversation when discussing all the negativity she received for these decisions.

@Karol Jeske You are generally correct, and more importantly Monica confirms that sentiment in more or less words in the interview. However my comment related to why she has earned people's respect, not whether she brought this upon herself (spoiler - she did). From my perspective her redemption is firmly rooted in the quality of her character that arose from the cruel and destructive crucible of public scrutiny. The suggestion that her redemption is unearned or that she deserves cruelty and harsh judgement says volumes more about the people who promote that idea than on Monica herself. John basically said this when trying to evoke some empathy by having us imagine being harangued every day in our lives for some mistake made in the distant past, one long past any relevance. Maybe it would help to reframe your question away from "does she deserve forgiveness?" to "is it really your or my place to forgive her in the first place?" The “worst aunt” thing reminds me a lot of the “hot McDonald’s coffee” lawsuit.

I don't know why, but that hits deep.

I live in Canada.
She should have sued the media outlets for libel.

Sooooo millie, what did you do to earn and deserve this public shaming? Did you learn anything from it? Like maybe dont be a piece of shit?
*woman, but I agree with everything else. People with money and power who use it to exploit people are disgusting.
Ehh it takes two to tango. She still sucks (no pun intended) for what she did, but I agree that Bill should have had more backlash for that.

Yeah, it was totaly messed up how she chased clout and then got it.

@@jimbis1313 And you authoritatively know this... just because. Sure. lol

It’s a wonderful sentiment and true. Unfortunately anyone who hated the clintons or could make money off of Monica’s pain, shame, and embarrassment never considered her. Good point. Her story is horrible and Toby Keith should give her family all the profits from the song he mocked her in.
MrMonotone well played. Back then we couldn’t look up the counter argument to the media machine.
John Oliver can actually conduct a seriously toned interview. I'm an even bigger fan of his now.
Between this interrview, the one with Pepe Julian Onzima and especially the one he did with Anita Hill on sexual harrassment, my respect for Oliver - which was damn high to begin with - has skyrocketed. He truly is a phenomenal comedian, an astute teacher and, above all else, a genuinely decent and thoughtful human being.

@@cyberneticbutterfly8506 That's the worst. I can forgive some young idiot who uses pepe the frog as an avatar but when you've lived 50 years and are still a stupid ignorant asshole it's a real shame.
I love John Oliver even more for doing this, and Monica is hella impressive.

It's that being young and dumb like we all are and even maybe at first it was kinda cool and crazy but years later no matter what she gets judged and made fun of for something at the time seemed exciting and kinda cool.

I'm sure I wouldn't have. What an incredible, strong woman.
No way, no how. What she went through was a living nightmare. I don't know how she survived it intact.
Get new role models lady. OVERCOME having an affair with a married man? You mean overcome the criticism of an immoral action like that? I am a Democrat, lest you think I am a Republican. I sadly supported Bill Clinton as we Dems mostly did at the time: I regret it. Both he and Monica are moral degenerates.
Yeah we should just execute everyone who’s ever had sex for the wrong reasons or disrupted committed relationships to dissuade degeneracy. Send a clear message that a person can never turn things around and become a role model after making a mistake. NO SECOND CHANCES.

I watched this once when I was 21 and once again when I was 23 so I'm in the clear and also wholeheartedly agree
a 22 year old working in the white house is not an idiot. That is a fully functioning adult capable of making a decision who she wants to fool around with. Shes a disgrace to America.
Really does a fine job of humanizing Monica..and highlighting how bad shaming has gotten and was for her as well. And say what you will, even though she was not innocent, but young and made bad decisions back then, she never deserved 1/1000000 of what she went through. Bravo John Oliver, for this unique piece on a very real problem.
I find it funny that we can take an age and decide at our own convenience whether it is "old enough" or "too young" for someone to the consequences of their decisions.
@@dudeguy556 she was 22 and he was 49, not to mention she was an intern and he was the literal president. Age had a role to play in what happened like as well as the unimaginable power imbalance.
@@dudeguy556 she got more than her due consequences for what she has done. Power structures are a thing, and a 49 year old PRESIDENT wanting a 22 year old intern is problematic on its own. Yet, the public and media blamed Monica for what happened way more than they blamed Clinton.
@@dudeguy556 Bill Clinton was 49 years old Yale graduate and the president of the United States of America, she was a 22 year old intern, blaming her for everything that happened is just patriarchal, dumb and illogical.
Maybe it would help to reframe your question away from "does she deserve forgiveness?" to "is it really your or my place to forgive her in the first place?" If more people thought that way the internet would be a far more healthy place.
