Cool John Oliver story. I met him at JFK airport. Told him I really liked his work. He seemed to genuinely appreciate it and said "Oh cheers thank you". Shook his hand and went on my way. Turns out we were on the same flight to the Bahamas. As I walked past him and his family on the plane he recognized me, smiled and waved. Thought that was so cool. I didn't want to come across as a weird fan so I was not planning on saying anything to him again. But at the baggage claim he went out of his way to tell me and my girlfriend "have a great trip guys!". Such a class act and completely down to earth. I don't agree with all his stances but will be a life-long fan anyways.
I think interacting with people in an airport really shows you who they are as a person. More often then not they just want to get to the destination and be done with travelling, hardly anybody is in a great mood because everybody just wants to be at their destination. So the fact that he was super chill and polite like that speaks volumes to me.
My faith in humanity really plummets after seeing how people act when traveling through airports and commercial flights.
A friend and I met him a couple times in NYC, more than a decade ago. We met him once in Union Square and once outside of his comedy show. Celebrity status aside, it was pretty cool talking to him as a person. Smart and funny, and down to earth like you said.
I love your last sentence. That is what it is all about
His "stances" are non-existent. Let's say His Family stood to suffer from any of the things he reported on. Would he make a video pleading with the decision-makers in charge to please tyrannize us slightly less or try & get immediate solutions? Thinking "things *should* be better" when you have the capacity to _make_ them better isn't a stance.
In fact it's a great illustration of avoiding taking one. He's waiting for "someone" to "do something" which no one suffering immediate consequences has the luxury of doing.
"This is my Vietnam. I shouldn't have got into this and I've got no good way out."
Absolutely sent me.

I was getting ready to watch a video about something totally unrelated, but TH-cam glitched and showed me a screencap of this video before playing the actual video I wanted. the moment I saw that, I was questioning what I had just seen and desperately searched to look this up as frantically as possible and to my happiness and pleasure, I see John Oliver on hot ones and my heart flew
17:40 I've found that there's a weird effect when you eat hot food that is a bit above your pain threshold, it seems to trigger some weird instinct to continue eating. It's as if chewing more food is preferable to just sit and feel the pain, despite what you're eating is adding/maintaining the pain.
I've noticed that too. It's not above my threshold really, but I can eat through a big bag of Flamin Hot Cheetos or a bunch of spicy wings and not really feel the heat until I decide to stop. And then all of a sudden, I'm like "oh right, those were spicy. ow."
@@lugialover09you’re totally right. this is the flamin’ hot Cheetos experience hahahaha

The way he had the whole studio laughing at times was really great xD
The thing with "force feeding content" to people - you can't. If they don't want to watch you talking about prison health care, they won't. The extraordinary thing he does with his show is making people actually want to watch.
"Dynamic pricing system... These beans are more than you thinks." ~ John, the cashier Robin Hood. 😂He's always been a G. Sean and John are two of my favorites!
I actually got misty eyed when I was imagining little John doing that.
I worked in a Dive Bar that had that system. When I started, the old timers would tell me the price they were charged for their drinks, and the owner had another amount for the people who were new/part of the gentrification of the area. Basically, the new prices were for all, once the last of the old regulars, who would show up at 7 am daily, died. RIP, Moon.
I should add that I used the Dynamic Pricing System in my dog training business, going forward. If you paid for a dog, it will be reflected in the price of my visits, as will if you rescued one from Death Row. If you can afford $2,000 and up for a pup, you don't need me to lend you equipment to try, or to donate my time. But hey, that's my business model. You don't have to agree!
@@carabiner7999 I do this for art workshops I run. A group of kids from the less nice part of town coming in to learn they can express themselves and be an artist even if it doesn't turn out how they planned, they don't tend to waste my materials, and I charge my costs. A group of wine mommie's or bacholette party looking for something "fun to try" while they get sloshed and waste my supplies "because it doesn't look right! I need to start over!", well I know you're gonna cost me more and I need to get paid for my time too ;)
The pride I feel for the Hot Ones Team when the guests say “that’s a really good question” never gets old.
Or when he mentions some deep cut from the guests' past and their eyes get big and their eyebrows perk up, like, "what? How did you find out about that?" 😅
Especially since John is himself a host, so he must intimately know about deep dives on guests!
I adore John Oliver!! Did I expect to see him here? No. Is it one of the top 3 best episodes ever? Yes. Thank you Sean! ❤❤🔥🔥🔥🔥
John's last answer about his outlook, rings so true. There are good people out there who are fighting/working the good fight.
I thank those who do, and if anything the Daily show group (like others) are keeping hope alive.
Maybe more they they know or maybe they do from the letters they do receive from viewers like us.
I just hope no mater the outcome, John can keep his head up proud that his voice is heard and his children are better off for it.
We don't all have to see eye to eye but we all have to make the world a better place for our future.
This is easily one of my all time favorite hot ones episode. John's vulnerability and enthusiasm for life and being uncomfortable is so infectious. Plus his childish giggling throughout the episode is a treat

Given that John Oliver does come from a country, where the hottest thing on the menu is the westernized Indian Curry Takeout (after a long night of binge drinking) he is REALLY brave to come here.
@@Hydrazine1000 Nor anything else to lessen the pain. He just accepted this was going to be his fate and he kept a stiff upper lip about it.
John's answer to the last question reminded me of one of my favorite qoutes. Mr Rogers, when he was a kid and saw some tragedy on TV, his mom would tell him, "Look for the helpers. There are always helpers."
I was thinking the same thing.
He was truly an inspiration and an certainly seemed to be an eternal optimist. I'll never forget how Fox "News" called Mr. Rogers an evil man who ruined a generation.

What does it mean?
@@ChemistTea It means that no matter how bad the situation is, there are always going to be those who are willing and ready to make it better. Don't let yourself fall into thinking that everything is terrible and there is no fixing it, rather rely on the faith that change is possible, and that there are those out there wordlessly and incrementally enacting change.
22:00 he really did nail that. My brain exists in that space that recognizes the need to burn most of this system down...its encouraging to hear that while Oliver also struggles with that regularly, he points out that as they investigate deeper there are always rays of hope.
That helps.
I can't believe how well he took it and how coherent he stayed through the whole thing! That's a sign of a great comedian right there
A guest I never expected but always wanted.... He did great, no water or milk & took decent bites! What a badass.

He definitely took it better than atleast half the other guests, especially Gordon Ramsey and his bag of tricks.
Gordon was a difficult episode to watch, I don’t think I finished it. He was so jagged and hard to watch. John destroyed him.

So often he both makes me face the horrific truth of where we are at as a society, while simultaneously giving me hope that there is strength and compassion still working hard in this world. Loved watching this- hot ones is always a lot of fun, but this interview in particular was beautiful. also? HOW did he get through this without any drinks to the end?!

The "content black hole" analogy really hit the nail on the head. It's so easy to get caught up in the never-ending cycle of consuming content without even realizing it. Time to reevaluate how I spend my time!
It´s been 3 Hours since you posted this. How´s it working ?
Just like all things, it's about balance.
Especially when so much of it at the moment is human suffering. We were never meant to deal with so much tragedy at once and we’re making ourselves mentally ill from it.

John Oliver is one of my heroes. He successfully deprogrammed me from insane political rhetoric and talking points I used to believe in.
So he successfully re-programmed you to his own insane political rhetoric and talking points? I think John's funny, but everything he says these days is dripping with ideology. Colbert is the same way. They are tools.

I love going to free or cheap shows, not knowing if it will be good but also not caring, because in there are absolute gems. It was an honour to perform there and I will never forget it
Just steer clear of Rents, Begbie, and their mates in the bog.

Hannibal's doc about it was very interacting
more than most people, John seems like a genuinely good guy
I have such a deep respect for John, and seeing him in this interview/challenge and how he reacted really boosted my appreciation even more.
He kept his professional composure till the very end and handled the wings well.
"My instincts say that this is going to go very, very badly." he says as his eyes light up and excitement level visibly rises.
that's fear
What I like most about John is that he allows himself to laugh and giggle along with the joke teller. It seems that most comedians just let jokes drip off them and not react, as if they're the only ones who can be funny...or if they're in one of those cliques, then they're suddenly all the funniest in the room. It's almost like he has actual joy.
Edit: Interviewer on interviewer would have to be...............Chris Hansen
I have to think the best comedians are the ones who have joy in comedy.
First episode I've watched in a while.
I loved that it was finally spelled out: that it's an interview, but it's a trauma bonding experience at the same time, an idea I had long ago, when I first watched. Loved the offer of a hug at the end! John Oliver was a champ!
