I absolutely adore John Oliver and love how much he enjoys humor, but when I see him slapping his knee or table I always think “if you make him laugh hard enough, he might accidentally assault you.”

As a single woman who often fears the thought of marriage, I teared up when hearing Stephen talk about his wife at the end. That was so beautiful and inspiring. Hope restored. ♡
I didn't get married until I was thirty nine years old. I had lived by myself since I was sixteen. I was scared shitless. But after twenty years it has turned out well. If you don't care about having children, don't hurry into something you will be sorry for. And yes, my Husband says "As soon as you're gone, I'm gone." And you know I wish he could go on with out me, because I love him.

So many of the OG Daily Show correspondents are among my favorite people in comedy (not the same as favorite comedians). These two are the best.

I'd just like to take a moment to appreciate his last answer. He's so in love with his wife and family and won't even make those "I hate my wife" jokes because he's just too good of a person to. Thank you, Stephen, for being an example of a genuinely kind and good person.
He had really touching tributes to his mother and grandmother on the colbert report, hes clearly a man who loves his family deeply.
She's an even bigger bright spot in post covid America.

I think everyone can agree that Stephen talking about his wife is exactly how we all want our significant other to feel about us.

Just FYI, it's been 9 years now since that "k" in "2k19" serves strictly no purpose and could be replaced by a "0" wihtout any loss. "Twenty Nineteen" takes as much time to say as "two 'kay' nineteen", and 2019 and 2k19 is the exact same number of characters.
That "k" is archaic. It's a thing of the aughts. It's not coming back for another 900 years or so.

Have shared passions and hobbies and don't let others try to define your relationship. I'm sitting here at 12:07am waiting for him to get home from work so I can spend a few minutes with him before I have to go to bed for work. Seeing him is the highlight of my day. Even if it's stolen moments. I pray my son finds a wife who will want to lose a little sleep for a few minutes of laughter and I hope he's the kind of man who sets up the Keurig so she makes it to the work at a human being.

Whenever someone takes a shot at John or really tickles him, he does that thing where he kind of winds up and squirms in laughter and bangs his hands on whatever is next to him... knees, table, desk,chair arms... It’s one of my favorite tics of his. Years back, Letterman took a shot at him about his wife in one appearance and John just about teetered over laughing banging on his chair.

It really rings true to me. My grandparents were deeply, deeply in love since they were 20. My grandpa had a stroke which left him a bit confused and frail, so she took care of him the last 10 years of his life, but then he had another one and finally died. She was in good health, but was so devasted after his death and couldn't imagine life without him, that she died a year later.
The hardest thing my grandfather ever did wasn't WWII, medical school, etc.
The hardest thing was waiting fifteen minutes before calling EMS, so my grandmother only had to die once, as they had agreed he would...
I hope you find that love someday. I've found it with the woman I love, and it's the most beautiful thing on Earth!

What makes Stephen Colbert one of my favorite comedians is that he is actually so profoundly sensitive and emotional. That bit about his friendship with his wife and his life with her resonated with me deeply. I hope both of them live long and happy lives filled with love.

By the way he worded his answer it gives the illusion that no other friendship in his life is of any special significance.
Obviously to a very good friend this revelation would be upsetting. So I, in a humorous, meme-like fashion implied that Jon, upon hearing the news, would make sad noises of a kind that could only be made by he and other late-night hosts.

@@ryanjofre, after 6 years I'm still not sure. True love, the exceptional kind that not everyone experiences, is so indescribably wonderful and puts you on a natural high. On the one hand I feel blessed to have had that, and yet for the same reason I wish I hadn't, because life without it feels so numb and bleak. At times I wonder if it wouldn't have been better to not know what I miss. To not know the difference between the with him and without him. To not have a perpetual gray cloud over my life.
