I picked a red Bumblebee out of a dump bin of minibots, thinking it was Cliffjumper. I was 8 so I didn't have sense enough to actually look at the thing. I didn't notice until I'd gotten it home and ripped it open. Man, I was annoyed. I hated Bumblebee. And yes, his feet always came off.

I don't know if I would be able to tell the difference between a red bee and and a red Cliffjumper as a kid in the heat of the moment. It would probably fool me today.
It's nice to know that I'm not ham-fisted and that others had similar feet problems with this mold.

When I got this reissue, it was my first time ever actually handling a G1 bee. To be honest, I ADORE how tiny this figure is, as well as the other minibots. So much so that I even went out and got the keychain release of bee that came out a while ago to wear on my work uniform! Needless to say, I adore this figure, and this review was fantastic, well done!

I had the original G1 Cliffjumper, in the correct red, that one of my cousins gave me, and the keychain version of Bumblebee, and both of them had the detachable foot problem. They've never fixed that with any character sharing this mold.
The keychain version also had the new sticker, but the old face and none of the newer paint, and the only other difference was the loop on the shoulder for the chain.

I have the yellow cliffjumper too. hasbro released them in both red & Yellow. Also don't forget G2 Bumblebee & the blue one glyph. I have those too. OH Tip for Bumblebee's feet. The reason you may have a memory of a red bumblebee is because in the 80s hasbro not only made a yellow bumblebee and a red cliffjumper, but color-swapped versions of them both. Edit: the Transformers basics video doesn’t talk about yellow Cliff and Red Bee but those toys definitely did exist. And Bumper really didn’t have anything to do with the color-swaps

    • @SuperDK64

No. He was an imported toy from Takara that Hasbro never released that then was released in Cliffjumper packaging. It was believed to be a mishap at the factory, but nobody really knew. I had a red Bumblebee and a yellow Cliffjumper as a kid. The packaging said Bumblebee and Cliffjumper. Most of my friends couldn't seem to understand that Bumblebee is a VW Beetle and Cliffjumper is a Porsche. They all thought the color is what defined the characters. In defending these wrong colored Autobots I said the color isn't what defined the characters, it was the form. Thank god I didn't have a blue one. I likely would have been told it was a fake.
The rubsign sticker isn't original to all G1 Transformers. None of the original line in 1984 had them. This only started in 1985. I can tell you exactly which ones I got in 1984 and which ones I got in 1985 or later due to the lack of the rubsign sticker. I don't recall the feet being an issue as a kid. As the toy had aged I can feel that it's gotten harder to transform and won't let anyone but myself do it out of fear of damaging it.

I don't think he was my first minibot back on the day (Gears may have that honour) but he was one I got fairly early on and he also suffered from the foot issue but that was only after I'd had him a while.
I picked up a couple of the keyring versions that were released a few years ago (I think they had the original face sculpt). I always thought, at the age of 8, that the asymmetric arm joints were so clever! (and still do to this day!)

I had a red Bumblebee growing up (I still have it). They were among the first retail releases of Transformers in the U.S., and were issued before the rub insignias were a thing. After the television show blew up, and they started issuing the rub stickers these disappeared from shelves.
I honestly don't think that I had seen the cartoon when I bought the figure -- I just liked VW beetles and wanted one.
I also had a few Penny Racers (known as "Choro-Q" in Japan).
As far as I know, there are red Bumblebees but there are no yellow Cliffjumpers (there are allegedly, however, similar yellow cars packaged in Cliffjumper cards, now affectionately referred to as "Bumblejumper" or "Bumper"). These aren't the Bumblebee or Cliffjumper mold, but another Microman/Microchange figure that was mistakenly released.
Oddly enough, I also have a red G1 Sunstreaker in my collection. It was the original Diaclone color for the figure, and one of three Diaclone (known as Diakron in the U.S.) cars released before Hasbro bought the rights for The Transformers. There were also U.S. releases of a Blue Trailbreaker and a black Iron Hide. These figures quickly disappeared from shelves and were replaced by the Hasbro models in the early 80s.

I like to think of Bumblebee as a realistic VW Beetle but jacked up with big tires in the rear like the G1 minicar. I think the Cali surfer crowd popularized this look in the '60s. It makes him seem a little cooler than just a plain Bug.
The original G1 toy seems to have been loosely based on a VW Model 111-1200A Sparkäfer Saloon (left-hand drive Standard Beetle Sedan for Euro continental export), with flat windshield, squared-corner bumpers (instead of bulky US safety bumpers) with integrated front headlights (instead of US fendertop headlights). However, it also adds the single right-side exhaust pipe outlet indicative of the US emissions controls introduced in 1975.
The G1 yellow over black coloration of the body over the robot arms with black bumpers is reminiscent of the Sonderaktion (Special Edition) Beetle called Jeans (so named for blue jeans fabric on the interior).
If Bumblebee was indeed modeled after a Jeans special edition Beetle that also received the 1975 emissions controls exhaust, then that would point specifically to the *1975 S744-L16M Jeans III special edition.* That exported special edition used a color called Tunisgelb (Tunisian yellow), which was a sort of amber orange-yellow.
MP-21 Bee appears to use the Tunisgelb color and black bumpers, but it drops the other Jeans III special edition appearance features, and it adds US fendertop headlights but deletes the single tailpipe. Weird.
