wow, finally! some Group A footage on youtube!! wasn't too long ago i was searching everywhere to find some, now there's several good videos on here. thanks for sharing!
the Gibson GTRs were by far the best and fastest engineered GrpA gtrs in the world. They were never allowed direct competition with the factory cars or factory engined customer cars due to the superior performance of the Aussie built and tuned engines. as far as i know, the only time the Gibson cars raced in Japan was after they were sold off due to GrpA ending in Australia and therefore not run by Gibson at that time
It makes me all sentimental to see those cars racin around back then. And to tyndago, I think everyone can agree that the r32 has and will out live any car in existance. It's a car that has so much history for such a short lifespan. It's also a supercar that can be purchased for under 20k. I like nearly anything with an engine, but the 32 will always be the car to beat. I know this is taking it a bit far, but I've devoted my life to the GTR, and I even have a GTR tat. It's what we live for
Are you driving stock or modified R32's ? The stock spring rates on a an R32 are 2.4 kg/mm front and 2.7 kg/mm rear with a 20 mm front and 25. mm rear sway bar. The normal R33 has 3.2 kg/mm front and rear with a 22.2 mm front and 26.5 mm rear bar. The Vspec R33 has 4.0 and 5.0 with the same size bars. Underneath almost all the major parts interchange. Its just the R33 is longer and wider. RB has an R32 with all R34 driveline under it.
I was going to ask you the same thing. I like the R32. It feels much smaller. I do have a lot of time in R33's and R34's. If you look at my videos, most of them are me driving. Some of the others are cars I worked on. I worked at Motorex originally here in the US, and then do consulting for RB Motoring. I just put up a bunch of videos from drag racing at IDRC last weekend. Some in car, and out of car of the R32. I have driven at least 50 different GT-R's. R32, R33, R34, R35.
The Japanese GT-R's were not a patch on the Gibson Motorsport ones.... sadly they never got to fight it out on track.... however Anders Olofsson, who drove the Reebok car at one point finished 3rd in a GMS GT-R in 1992... and proclaimed it the best ever!
Love the blatant power difference vs the Sierra's coming out of corners, they never stood a chance. Axenm is right, Nismo came to Aus to learn from Gibson Motorsport, and its the Aussie Holinger gearbox that was using around the world in GrpA. Also the R35 is racing in JGTC and has dominated the Australian tarmac racing scene for the last few years
Yes, think forward. The past is great. Its fun. But most of us really don't want to live in it. The R32 was very advanced for 1989 when it was released. Very advanced when it ran . I like cars, just about everything. Everything has a time and place for everyone. We don't all have to limit ourselves to only liking one brand, or one car. That would be kind of like eating chicken soup everyday. It would get boring after a while, even though its good, and good for you.....
Im not a know it all mate. Just adding some correct content. Supercars are not production cars, so i have no problem with them running components from Harrop or designed in house to make cars more reliable (diffs etc). The Fords use an SVO Ford Motorsport block/ heads, Holden similarly only Chevs. They are not the same engines as purchased in road cars. But the Skyline GTR in JGTC ran at times ran a V6 and was rwd. The Supra ran a 4cyl out of an MR2 at one time...so make of that as you will
HMM please explain which ford engine they use then as you know it all. If its not a falcon engine then what i said is still fairly right. And same with the diffs. Please explain what ford road cars these are out of?
DO you know what Volumetric capability is? More cubes is more power, Blown or turbo 5L will always beat blown or turbo 2.6L The reason you dont see 7 sec 5L VL Blocks is we can use an easy 350cu block and get great power for less cash
Do you think Nissan was limited to using an inline 6 for the gtr? I think not, they could have introduced the VK engine in the R32, but they wanted to design a car that makes massive output on forced induction, and I'd say the Cossie and Skyline do it best. Inline sixes happen to be more balanced than any v6 or v8. Turbo charging is a completely reasonable method of making power, it promotes more breath-ability for the engine so, lets suffocate a bmw engine and see how it runs.
Hmmm looks like the RB must be one hell of an engine ay...To beat such a good engine you describe. Oh by the way are you saying the engines they use in todays top fuel and dragsters are those of the group A VLs? didn;t think so. Please stop typing now...
Im not so sure on the Skylines times but im 99% sure Goerge Fury still holds record for touring cars for some track here in Aus from the 80s in a z18 (possibly FJ cant remember) powered bluebird. V8 supercars still havent beat it.
I am a big R32 GT-R fan, but you don't know what you are talking about. The G meter was an option in the Nismo dash of the R34 GT-R. Not standard. The R33 is longer and wider than the R32. Short and boxy ? The R32 is a brick aerodynamically. 0.40 CD. tyndago.googlepages. com/gt-rsuspensionandalignmentspecifications2
No actually the rules were changed to take all Forced induction, 4WD and 4WS All they had to do was comply, but Australia stopped running group A class, hence why there was a VN SS Grp A and no VP SS Grp A
Simple fact is considering we are talking power the easiest way too compare is gonna be on the qtr. There are plenty of street based GTR's into the 8's and the faster ones are into the 7's. Cant say ive seen any VL's come close to that.
I wouldn't say they threw in the towel. Why should Nissan change to the rules ? They had a dominating car, and the rules were changed to take them out of the contest. In case you didn't notice - Nissan made the Nissan Skyline GT-R from 1989-2002.
I really don't understand ideas like this. The GT-R was built as a 6 cylinder, turbocharged , all wheel drive vehicle. The Holden wasn't . Against the Holden and the rules in place. The GT-R did well. Well enough they had to change the rules...
Umm i have no idea but why would that mean anything anyway? Ide say it was more then them anyway as a GTR weighs as much standard. And if it was lighter that was the whole point of those races, the smaller engine cars where lighter and made things interesting. The only reason for the weight penalty was so the V8's could keep up.
It's was a glorious victory for Nissan to dominated the Group A touring car racing back to back. Not only in Japan, also in European Group A racing. Beating M3's Cosworth RS500 etc. It was so superior Most European Group A racing either band the GTR from Racing or add 150kg to make it slower. LOL. The European's finally gave up. And turn into Super Touring Series. DTM,BTCC,JTCC,WTCC.
He said HAD, while maybe im wrong i thought he ment we had the fastest back when we where running them in grp A. I dont know if thats true or not though it could be. We certainly dont have the fastest nowday's.
ahh gotta love the old gtr bathurst debate. Import fans run to it everytime theyre in trouble the gtr should never have been in group A. It was designed from the ground up to be a world beating sports car. the aussie cars were only made for a small market and were designed as a family car for australian conditions big difference, i think so
It's still funny to hear when the Aussie's cryed over the fact there Punny V8 Holdens & Ford's couldn't keep up with the R32's. That Reebok one is a nice livery.
Audi builds awesome all-wheel drive cars BMW builds awesome rear-wheel drive cars Mercedes builds awesome couches on wheels All you have to do is decide which one suits you best, but all have their pros and cons, but all are equally stunning. by the way..... the GT-R fucks up all the above
LOL, mate you are wrong. Fords use Ford engines. Holden use Chevs. Holdens use Ford diffs, and other common components. They have far more in common with todays road cars then Japanese GT cars have in common with their road going equivelant. They have inboard suspension, crazy aero and composite materials.
Gibsons had the fastest gtr's in the world.Read the interview Fred did in Australian Muscle Car magazine. They were to take their cars to Japan to compete but were asked by the head of NISMO not to because they were too powerful and had better electronics which Gibbo designed.
Why comply ? They didn't have a car that fit the class, as the rules were changed .... Nissan didn't make a rear wheel drive V8 car they wanted to race. It was effectively a way for them to tell Nissan they didn't want them playing any more. Not Nissan's fault that the governing body didn't want them winning any more over the domestic market cars. Why didn't Holden or Ford start racing all wheel drive, forced induction, all wheel drive cars ?
LOL its not like there are many 7 sec V8's anyway that arent tube frame or atleast with massive tubs and slicks. "Blown or turbo 5L will always beat blown or turbo 2.6L" That statement is also stupid as its totally depends on the car that its in and all the other mods done too the car.
babyduck1, a JGTC Skyline will absolutely slaughter a V8 Supercar. It's about 500kg lighter, but is only down by about 100hp (because of regulations, not 'weak' Japanese engines or some nonsense) and has a huge amount of downforce compared to the V8s. It's never a fair comparison though, the Japanese cars are GT cars not touring cars for starters, and they're pushing further ahead every year while V8 Supercars is held back because Ford can't make cars as fast as the Holdens.
The GTR had shitty aerodynamics and was also given weight penalties to slow it down. Despite these two facts (which in most cases should be enough to make things fair) the GTR still killed the opposition. I would like to see a comparison of a GTR from that time with a V8 Supercar from this day and age. The GTR may not win, but I doubt it would be a push over. Also I would like to see a comparison of say a JGTC Skyline to a V8 Supercar. That would make for a very interesting race.
Lol go ahead and put a turbo on your POS and see what a 1500hp Skyline does to it...Why can't you all just get over the fact that the skyline is a legend, don't be ashamed that it beat Holden....
I have no idea...Thats why you just pmed me on my profile telling me the R34 dosnt come with an rb26. Yeah youre smart. All GTRs upto 34 came with that engine. You said the v8s make 8k+ hp, were not talking about the hybrid whatevers, were clearly talking about the skyline and vl, so why are you goin on about something completly different. Just face it, skyline won, holden lost get over it.
put it this way holdens..most probably 5.7 liter with extra two cylinders compared to the gtr.....the skyline is less than half with twin turbo......its even......you still have wheel spin but ther's way more traction than just rear. im not bagin holden out.....i have a statesman.....gtr was just the better car
LOL why do idiots comment without checking the facts. VL Calais (ide guess the heaviest)- 1350kg. R32 GTR- 1480kg. And i dont see how you can think the 'status quo" is a 2 cars weighing the same despite one having an engine twice the size . If the VL wasnt good enough with its shit old engine they should of made it better.
Ok OK, so if Nissan is sooo HI-Tech then why did they throw in the towel on Bathurst. They were banned for forced induction (and the Aussie Public boo'ing them was a wise choice to get rid of them) But did Nissan come back with a HI-Tech NA car? nope.... No R32 is far lighter than a VL, so the weight penalty made it more of a Status quo. Besides the VL's were running 5L carby fed engines vs 2.6 L fuel injected hairdryer bolted on engines, If the VL's were running forced and output was same as GTR then the fanboi club you obviously belong to would be minor, as The GTR's never won ever race they were in and infact one of there so called victories they never even finished the race..
If i had bothered to watch the last 15 years of oz touring car racing i would probably be blindly preaching the merits of a V8 too. fact is GODZIRRA OWNED GROUP A through technological advances not looking to the past.
v8...who needs that for a road car. your arguement is shit... no one needs a v8 or twin turbo...ppl buy em cause they want a fast car. holden probly should go awd...itd stop my mates commodore's tyres always spinning in the rain

A friend of mine has recently imported an R32 with a Bee-R R34 front end conversion. Best thing about it to be honest, He bought a real Dog!
in 91 the flogged all the holdens n fords...set a record that still stands today...that was a complete race
awesome i was looking for some group A r32 races
Love This R32 Calsonic !!!!! the reebok and the other civic too !!!
Are you driving stock or modified R32's ? The stock spring rates on a an R32 are 2.4 kg/mm front and 2.7 kg/mm rear with a 20 mm front and 25. mm rear sway bar. always loved the calsonic R32 :D
@andmouse1 The engine management actually came from the US. NPTI.
I was going to ask you the same thing. I like the R32. It feels much smaller. I do have a lot of time in R33's and R34's. If you look at my videos, most of them are me driving. If group A had remained, would rally cars such as the Impreza 555, Celica GT4, Lancer Evo be able to compete and be competitive?
i don't follow bathurst but on wikipedia it says
the 1991 GTR did 161 laps in 6h 19m 14.80s
the 2008 ford bf falcon did 161 laps in 6h 26m 00.4291s ?
The Japanese GT-R's were not a patch on the Gibson Motorsport ones.... sadly they never got to fight it out on track.... however Anders Olofsson, who drove the Reebok car at one point finished 3rd in a GMS GT-R in 1992... and proclaimed it the best ever!

hmmm interesting, dont suppose wiki has the qualifying lap times?
nice foudings
btw, what is the track ?
What the hell? It's still a GT-R i.e. best tunable car ever made. And a legend too.
Yes, think forward. The past is great. Its fun. But most of us really don't want to live in it. The R32 was very advanced for 1989 when it was released. Very advanced when it ran . its a dream come true since friday for me :) well i got gts, Goal is a gtr but for now i can get my fix :D
not all the others, what about the rb20?
Group A R32, I have seen a few different numbers. 1.5~1.8 bar.
Im not a know it all mate. Just adding some correct content. hey dude u can still get a gtr and drift cuz there is a manual option 4 awd and rwd and i agree the r32 are the most attractive

and know it wasnt oversteery it was understeery, just a little correction if you didnt no thats ok

what a sound of that GT-R's!!!!!!!
how does that change the fact that it was still better than just about every single other performance/sports/super car in its time?

Most people in the US like the R33.Its a bigger smoother shape. Most people like the R33 headlights more. Different strokes for different folks.
Got the times on that?
No actually the rules were changed to take all Forced induction, 4WD and 4WS

Cant say ive seen any VL's come close to that.
nice skyline GTR R32
I must be a freak cos my fave looking Skyline is the R33, I'm waiting for the abuse to come rolling in!!!!!
Rofl the GT-R had no competition but itself. :D
OWNED
2.6L vs 5L?
I wouldn't say they threw in the towel. Why should Nissan change to the rules ? They had a dominating car, and the rules were changed to take them out of the contest. In case you didn't notice - Nissan made the Nissan Skyline GT-R from 1989-2002.

big difference, i think so
actually that skyline has over 520 horses
r32 GTR came with an s20? I find that very very hard to believe, but o well, lets just leave it at that.
yea shes the best..
It's still funny to hear when the Aussie's cryed over the fact there Punny V8 Holdens & Ford's couldn't keep up with the R32's.
That Reebok one is a nice livery.
yeah, the old calsonic skyline gtr :D
yeah they where still production engines though. Not a made for racing engine.
Audi builds awesome all-wheel drive cars
BMW builds awesome rear-wheel drive cars
Mercedes builds awesome couches on wheels
All you have to do is decide which one suits you best, but all have their pros and cons, but all are equally stunning.
by the way..... the GT-R fucks up all the above
R32 over all....Then probably R34 , R35 , R33. Honestly underneath, the R32, R33, and R34 are very similar.
LOL, mate you are wrong. Fords use Ford engines. Holden use Chevs. Holdens use Ford diffs, and other common components. They have far more in common with todays road cars then Japanese GT cars have in common with their road going equivelant. They have inboard suspension, crazy aero and composite materials.
heavy, but good

i. love. skylines.
yea the yobbos banned all imports cuz they were to good for em
No - this is a GT-R.
2:10 bye bye Sierra. :D
Lol go ahead and put a turbo on your POS and see what a 1500hp Skyline does to it...Why can't you all just get over the fact that the skyline is a legend, don't be ashamed that it beat Holden....
Now I understand Why that Skyline was kicked out the A group
Fuck they are seriously too fast even the Supra can't keep up
It's invincible
I have no idea...Thats why you just pmed me on my profile telling me the R34 dosnt come with an rb26. Yeah youre smart. All GTRs upto 34 came with that engine. You said the v8s make 8k+ hp, were not talking about the hybrid whatevers, were clearly talking about the skyline and vl, so why are you goin on about something completly different. it used 2 beat ford v8's till it got banned 2 yrs later.
for a stock car, its heavy
lol they just eat everythin in their way. ITS GODZILLA
put it this way holdens..most probably 5.7 liter with extra two cylinders compared to the gtr.....the skyline is less than half with twin turbo......its even......you still have wheel spin but ther's way more traction than just rear. im not bagin holden out.....i have a statesman.....gtr was just the better car
I dont think that the GTR killed anything, apart from its competition. What killed GroupA racing was the "pack of arseholes" decision which made alot loose interest. Think about this, If the GTR, bmw etc was left in, and groupA still continued. Dont you think, Holden may have worked harder, to bring you a better product.
no offence but thats more of a v8 thing making up for the insecurities
HAHAHA What a BS excuse. Supercars are ground up Racecars. There is basically Nothing on them commodore or ford. Especially the fords since they also use a chev im fairly sure. JGTC skylines still use a modified Skyline chassis making them alot closer to road cars.
those cars only beat the GTR after penalties were assessed.
Take away the skyline gtrs turbos and you don't have a skyline gtr. Sorry.
LOL what a shit excuse. The GTR was just as much as a production car as the rubbish it was racing.
