United ERJ-145 - Strong Winds (25+ knots) takeoff from Washington Reagan Airport

  • DCA-EWR. Very windy conditions at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Thanks to the snow storm the previous day, my flight was canceled and departed the following day. But this allowed for a fun but blustery flying day. Strong winds meant lots of turbulence throughout the whole flight. One of the bumpiest flights I've been on but definitely fun. Lots of ground traffic action shots due to the longer wait times between takeoffs and landings, especially the Frontier A320neo. Saw a couple of go-arounds.

    • @MattyDemello
      @MattyDemello 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I loved the old southwest planes better than they are now. For some reason the old style planes flew very calmly. like for some reason it was less bumpy. I only flew 4 times in my life. the first 2 were on the old southwest in the 90's and 2 times on the newer southwest within the past year or 2 and I can say 100% the old flights were more smooth. The new planes for some reason take fast turns and almost makes you sick. They are more bumpy and you can hear everything rattling and they fly faster and higher. The old southwest flights I took in the late 90's were all slow and smooth and turned very slowly that you almost couldn't feel it. ALSO the landing was better in the old ones. They use to land so smoothly that you couldn't tell when the tires made contact with the ground. The new southwest for some reason slam the ground hard then everything rattles before slowing down. Not the old ones. It was smoother.

    My first time flying out of Sydney, Australia, they closed the airport for an hour due to high winds. We boarded our Boeing 737 and waited, all the while the plane was rocked side to side while we were sitting at the gate, the only time I’d ever experienced that. I was bracing mentally for a very rocky takeoff but no, we took off and it was super smooth. Smaller planes, like this ERJ, will be more affected. Safe travels to all.

    I’d love to fly that take off, anywhere there is wind, I’m up for it, probably my favorite conditions to fly in, I think that’s just due to the fact that living in Ireland literally promotes windy conditions also, makes virtually any VFR flight an IFR flight because the cloud ceiling is always very low and flying PA 34s or DA 42s is almost always done via instruments, The best experience to date was an ILS Landing in full overcast with 20 knot gusts, at dusk.
    Love flying, can’t wait for the right hand seat in A320, soon.

They ran it off of the end of the runway, broke it in two, killed both pilots, and injured two on board. Neither pilot was qualified for the aircraft. They never activated reversers or had auto brakes armed.

    This plane was in complete control at every second of take off. Doesn't mean it wasn't scary though for all on board. I'm 37 now and when I was 14 I had a horrific landing which I still remember minute by minute to this day. I flew on a night flight from Singapore to Adelaide on a Quantas 767 and i was sitting in the middle seating of the original 2-3-2 configuration and on approach I remember looking through the passengers on the left and out the windows and seeing the street lighting then looking right a few seconds later and seeing the same. This was constant every few seconds on the final 10 mins of the decent and it was petrifying. Any direction the plane could go it went. Up and down, left and right, and at times it felt suspended in the air which of course was the worst feeling of all. We bounced 4 times until the wheels finally remained on the tarmac. I've flown countless times since but that stays with me. I was in a fine plane and tbh it was piloted by fine pilots but Geez if I was a nervous flyer then I'd never have left the ground after that.

    To all of you scared of turbulence or flying in general: 1) turbulence has never been the cause of a plane crash. 2) look up on TH-cam pilots flying during turbulence and you will see that they are not phased in the slightest. Finally 3) you are more likely to get bitten by a shark when swimming in the ocean than be in a plane crash

    thats cool at 4:56 you got the original Southwest Livery havent seen that one in years their all painted blue or with the new livery after the AirTran merger also the strong winds was that normal or no never experienced strong winds during takeoff or landing just turbulence sometimes. and where were you headed ?

      There was a snow storm that came through the day before so the winds were just because of the storm. I was flying to Newark.

      It's comparable to the Canadair Regional Jet in size. Personally I found the CRJ7 to be a bit more comfortable than the ERJ. It is more comfortable than say an ATR72. I remember my first time on an ATR, I saw the seats and said, "Where's the adult seats, this is the children's section I assume?" They said, "No, this is it." I said, "Oh shit." I'm not a big person, 5'10"/165, but I had to squeeze in, figure out what to do with my legs (I considered putting then around my neck which would have been more comfortable, but I thought others would stare,) and had to pretend I had scoliosis for 30 minutes. When we got to Atlanta Hartsfield Intl, I had to get my legs out of my pockets, put them back on, and walk like Igor in Young Frankenstein until we got off the plane. Loads of fun thanks to Atlantic Southeast Airlines, a Delta Connection. The CRJ has mostly replaced the ATR for Delta Connections now, as an apology to their customers for the ATR sardine can treatment. Sam Holly, a friend of mine went from Greenville SC to Chicago Midway on a ERJ and he's a bigger guy than I am. Imagine the cramps and backache after that flight.

      It's not the plane's fault, it's the engines that are causing that. Don't worry though - common mistake :D

      I always thought the wings were too small. The E135/145 is not even an original design. Its just a stretched out EMB-120 with swept wings and 2 turbofans.

    I hate flying on those small regional planes, it always feels like you're on a 40 foot boat out at sea getting knocked around vs a cruise ship (like a 777) that is more steady.
