  • An updated guide on large ME controllers and P2P networking.
    You can support me and the channel! Read more here: / tkh
    I have done videos about these things before, but when I got a question to help out with a problem I took the opportunity to also make an updated video on the subject.
    I think the old videos didn't have the visible channel info from The One Probe or the colored tunnels which makes things much easier compared to how it used to be.
    Btw, I think it's called "Back bone network"... ;)
    Read more about me and what I do here:

    All my AE2 videos are gathered in this playlist:

    Key items and blocks in this video:
    - ME Controller
    - P2P Tunnel
    - Memory Card
    - ME Networks
    - Auto-crafting

      @@dzzenok4136 Not sure what you've done but you might have mixed up cables (use dense cables where required) and check the video on me networks to learn about how to handle the 8 channel limitation, after that you need a controller, and then you need dense cables to handle 32 channels before branching.

    You probably have the best tutorials for AE2, and I can say 100% it's helped me understand so much more than many written guides have, and it's also super cool to see you still making tutorials for it despite having done it for so long, so thanks a ton. I do have a quick question though. Currently I'm unable to find any documentation on the fluid mechanics that replaced EC2's own fluid mechanics, and I'm wondering if you would be able to cover that in some capacity sometime?
    (you seem really busy tho, plus you also 100% don't get enough views for this stuff so imo it's amazing you're still doing this)

    • @therealtkh
      @therealtkh  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I third this! I don’t really watch many modded Minecraft let’s plays, but these designs are so freaking cool that I’d love to actually see a normal let’s play where you put these to good use. (Totally not because I want to steal all your designs.😏)
      For real, though, I’d watch every single episode if you made a modded Minecraft let’s play. That’d be amazing.
      I honestly just recommend that you take a break from making tutorials. Don’t force yourself to do something you don’t want to. Chill and play the game normally while recording, is what I recommend. You could do something like direwolf20 does where his let’s plays are semi-tutorials, as he describes what he’s doing in his let’s plays, if you want to.
      If you do eventually have the time to play the game normally, I recommend playing a pack like Enigmatica 2 (normal kitchen sink pack with quests), All the Mods 3 - Remix (normal kitchen sink pack without quests but with more mods than Enigmatica 2), Enigmatica 2: Expert (hard progression-based packs with even better quests than the regular version of the pack), or Enigmatica 2: Expert Skyblock (hard progression-based _skyblock_ pack). Really, just play whatever; I’d love to watch regardless of what pack you play.

      @@immortalsun Glad to hear that :) I haven't played a modded pack in a while so it's very high up on my list at this point. Doing tutorials is fun in a different way and a good way to fully learn the mods, but it's only useful if the knowledge is put to use in a playing world.. Haven't decided yet, but I'll discuss it further with my Patrons to get more input of what to pick!

    I've done a similar one where I led the tunnels back into the main controller, and then used large cabels to connect to those interfaces. It was pretty flexible, as as long as there was cable capacity, I could connect to more tunnels. However it was also more expensive and complex, needing more controllers for the same result. Your design is neatly separated.

      This is what many Minecrafters and Minecraft-TH-camrs do wrong. They connect the P2P Network back to their Main ME-Controller and waste channels instead of using a separate Controller. They can also run only up to 16 P2P Input-Channels and 16 P2P Output Channels. I tried both Versions, and i think the one like in this Video offers higher operation speed of the whole ME-System and you can run up to 32 Input- and Output Channels per P2P Network (Dense Cable required) at the same Time.

    Thanks for the guide TKH! I'm new to the modded scene and I am now nearly at the point where I start delving into AE2 and I have to say all this is new to me. I also have a feeling this is a more advanced guide and I really should start watching previous guides first as some things are unclear to me. I really appreciate your effort, and I will definitely try do my own research. But, if you don't mind, I would like to know a bit more about these channels and perhaps you could explain a few things?
    1) why do you use color coded smart cables? If using p2p channels, would it be possible to just use glass cables through your corridors to connect everything? Then pull out a dense cable from the p2p channels inside the rooms again?
    2) why do you use separate ME controllers for the 4 different corners of your base? What is the benefit of doing this and what is the result of this on the amount of accessible channels? Is it considered a separate network that it actually needs its own controller?

      It's very complicated when trying to do everything starting from nothing! Maybe a little late but you can name your memory cards in an anvil.
    Once your base and your AE2 system grow to a size where you have to rely on tunnels, it will essentially restructure all of your cabling and you will have dozens of tunnels.
    If anything breaks or you want to move around your core of controllers, hooking up every last one of the tunnels can be a daunting task and you are likely to forget one.
    Having a bunch of memory cards with unique names at least tells you how many pairs of tunnels your base used to have.

    • @therealtkh
      @therealtkh  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good point! Another way to do it is to keep a chest (or item frame) next to every P2P tunnel output with the corresponding memory card. That makes it easy to reconnect after maintenance :)

    Just a question, why do you need the extra 4 controllers? Can't you just use the dense cable out from each side of the cube with the colored cables connected, since you're using the memory card to link the p2p.

    • @therealtkh

    Do the Memory Cards work differently in Minecraft 1.7.10? I'm playing FTB Infinity Evolved (no idea what AE2 version this modpack runs on) and when I try to link the P2P Tunnels with the Memory Card, neither of the Tunnels get recolored like in the video and no frequency is shown in either Memory Card or P2P Tunnel.
    I assume it's just visually different, but if that's the case, it's gonna be really annoying to keep track of which tunnel is linked to which.

    • @therealtkh
      @therealtkh  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's pretty much the same functionality (exactly the same unless I missed something). A way to keep track of memory cards is to place them in a chest or in a frame next to the output. Then you can tear it down and rebuild quickly! You would need one memory card for every tunnel but it's easy to keep track of!

    • @jessicabevan4657

      All of the p2p tunnels need a controller connected to them, which takes up channels from the main controller if you did it that way, as well as making cable place more complicated. The secondary controllers are used essentially as routers for the main one, which makes network design simpler (as well as being the only way to utilise all channels of the primary controller).

      You already got an answer but I want to add one thing: It is possible to skip ME Controllers in the P2P Networks as long as you limit each "thin" cable to 4 inputs and 4 outputs. An ME Network can only have 8 channels without an ME Controller (this is very useful in early networking btw!) which means that the 16 channels (32 in total as the network has to handle the outputs as well) need a controller or the P2P network simply won't work. But for the 16 channels you would have to send 4 thin cables in each direction which would be a mess ;)

      It sounds like the Dense Cable is not connected on the "source side". In my build the P2P tunnel sits directly on the ME Controller so either your controller is not online, or there is something wrong with the tunnels. Remember that they have one input and can have several outputs. It's important how to link them so the input is the one on the controller and output is in the distant room.

      @@therealtkh Thanks so much for responding! since your vids go back to 2014 it was a shot in the dark so glad your still checking this stuff! So after some looking at all of the points, some work and some don't. I think I have narrowed it down to one side. In two rooms i was able to grab one of the "extra" memory cards that were coded as per your nifty code them all and stick them in a chest next to the controller idea and replace the P2P tunnel in the room and program it with the card and it worked. But I cycled through all the cards in the other location no luck. I feel like I am so close. I think I understand the I paused the video to make sure all of the connections are identical. I checked all the p2p Tunnels on the Controller Multiblock and they are all input, and the ones in the rooms are output so that appears correct and of course al of the controllers are online as they all have the disco ball lighting effect, and The output Dense connected to it going to the rooms shows online. I have build and rebuild testing and learning all the ins and outs all the way up to P2P, and I thought I had a complete handle on P2p till I tried this build lol, that said my testing was not with a multiblock. A network can only have one controller, but it's possible to have separate networks with big controllers in each and access content through storage bus / interface connections. But when I investigated this many years ago I came to the conclusion that it was not possible to use the other network's content for auto-crafting. If the 2000+ channels in the 3x3x3 controller is not enough you can of course make a larger controller and use P2P networks as in this video, I would say it's the most common way to do things

    • @anhedoniac6390
      @anhedoniac6390 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Late but the little controllers are a separate network, that's why they break when you connect them to the power without clear cable because that'll put them on the same network. You use them so you can have 16 P2P hubs coming from them on a single line, without you'd have to run two lines of 8.
      This set-up gives you access to 16 P2P hubs in each direction, and each of them allows 32 lines / machines.
      There's 9 sets of 8, he's using 8 sets and leaving the bottom set free for now. If I was you I'd leave the top set free of this was in your basement and have them going directly up.

      I'm pretty sure you could even have 32 P2P hubs on one line, as long you have two *seperate* lines only connected by the "p2p-net controller"

    Hey, just a design question. I noticed you did this in the other video showing this kind of ME setup as well. You chose to power the controller in the controller room, thus breaking the aesthetic of P2P tunnels directly on the controller. Couldn't you have just put the power connection in the power room of your "base" and transmitted it through the P2P tunnel?

    • @therealtkh
      @therealtkh  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a good point, I have done it from habit I guess. But you're right, the power connection to the main network (all rooms and the controller) can be in either room where we can connect to the network. I put an energy cell in the ME Drive room instead and could make the controller run on that power through the network. It's a better solution and I'll think about it from now on! :)

    like another thing i dont get is you used dense cables to extend your channels further to reach other parts of the base like to create things like inventory space or crafting computers, you split that 32 cable with 8 channels ones to separate them but then you placed a p2p and connected a 32 channel cable to the 8 channel one, doesn't the 8 channel cable get overloaded if you fill up the 32 channel cable with inventory stuff or does p2p allow 8 channel cable to receive 32 channels content.

      @therealtkh  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically what the other commenter said. I have separate tutorial videos on how P2P works and why this is the smartest way to do it for larger networks. If you didn't use a P2P network you would need to draw Dense cable all over the place, and it would be expensive and a huge mess! In one Dense cable you can fit 16 Dense cables (16 inputs and 16 outputs) which means 512 channels instead of 32. Think of it as a backbone network that is separate from the "use network", you can almost say that they are not even connected to each other. Note that in that 8 channel cable going to one room I mostly use only 1 channel for the P2P output. And in there we'll magically have 32 channels to play with!

      I think I understand what you mean and you are correct in that case. It can be expanded and you can make the main controller with over 20k channels but it will require several P2P networks to only handle all that! I have always played single player (even when I tried server play it ended up as single...) and have enjoyed it. My first tip would be to play it one topic at a time, and don't mix too many mods together to make the perfect design directly. I find much joy in having areas of the base dedicated to various mods, and go through them one by one. Like using one mod (Thermal Expansion) to make all ore processing. Even though some other mod might be more efficient, I can get to that later. And always spend some extra time on designing a somewhat ok looking base. I think it's more fun to have a good looking base than just a rough cave ;) Chose a modpack with the key mods you want to play with. It's not important to use the biggest packs! I had much fun in some FTB Lite pack, there's enough of content and they are not as demanding for your PC.

      This still works. But in my case these HEX-Adresses and color pixels are not shown at all.
      If you use only one memory card to link all of your P2P Tunnels, it's important to make sure you clear the memory cards after each linking. For me i have to shift+right click while looking at a block to clear the memory cards. Shift+right click while looking in the air doesn't work.
      The linking procedure is always the same: First shift+right click on an unlinked P2P Tunnel that is placed at your ME-Controller then go to the other End and just right click on another unlinked P2P Tunnel. If your ME-System get's bigger and bigger, it can take a few moments before channels, P2P Tunnels and devices get activated.
      The Network-Cable between two P2P-Tunnels need to be energized. Otherwise the P2P Tunnel doesn't work. I always use quartz fiber to do this. If you use sub-controllers like in this Video you can connect the sub-controllers together with glass-cables and quartz fiber and connect an Energy acceptor at some point when you use Other Mods for Energy delivery. Quartz fiber is used to isolate energy from the ME-Data itself. Only energy is passed through.
      I always use Ender-IO for Energy production and i often place two AE2 energy acceptors at two different points to create a Fail-safe power supply. I also use AE2 Powercells and large Ender IO capacitors for energy storage. I also build an Emergency power supply to power the ME-System up if something goes wrong. If really bad things happens i have lots of minecraft chests and a 64k storage cell in a separated ME-Chest full of Stuff that i need to repair the ME-System in an Explosion proof room. Sometimes i build a second little ME-System only for emergency, so i can put the storage cells from my main ME-System in the other.

    • @therealtkh

      In short: yes :) I have covered P2P tunnels in dedicated videos where you can get a deeper explanation. And they can be connected from one to several locations if needed, but they will then share the (up to) 32 channels.

    I'm confused as to why you are running p2p in each "room"? Why not just run straight cable without it?

    • @therealtkh
      @therealtkh  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Let's say you want to have 32 channels avaliable in every room, that would require you to run a dedicated dense cable from the main controller to every room, just stacking them on top of each other in the "corridors". It requires a huge amount of material and space. Not to mention that a larger controller might require tunnels to attach to 4-5 sides within a single block space depending on design. So in short: when controller and amount of rooms grows somewhere in mid- to end-game you pretty much need this type of setup if you want everything to be connected in the same network.

    what are the dimensions of the rooms if i may ask

    • @therealtkh
      @therealtkh  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hard to say, and I have made this build like three times and every time made the rooms bigger and used different layouts (some small - some large). However, the most important part is to have a three block wide corridor for the "backbone network". Going with only one block makes it too tight if you have rooms above or below. Then you can expand the entire base much larger than in this video - and with more and/or larger rooms. The rooms for pure storage doesn't need to be very big, but other builds require more space and then you won't be able to use all 32 channels in one room unless you make it larger. However, the idea with this type of large network is to prioritize simplicity and logic and not care too much about channel efficiency.

    • @therealtkh
      @therealtkh  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@grimgreetings2249 In that case: three blocks wide corridors and make all rooms slightly larger than you think are needed. But keep different sizes so there's a selection! The middle room can be 19x19 (not including walls). Just test a few quick layouts in creative to get a feeling for them. And corridors 3 blocks wide so it's easy to walk around. Entire building can be something like 150x110 blocks which gives a good starting place for many rooms :)

    Whats the point of a backbone system?

    • @therealtkh
      @therealtkh  14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Two reasons: First, if I want 32 channels in a room far away, I could go with Dense Cable all the way, but it's much cheaper to use tunnels and "thin" cables. A regular cable can fit 4 or 8 channels, which multiplies with 32. Second, in a large controller, it's impossible to reach all sides in a hole in the controller, then a P2P networks is required anyway - and adds with the first reason.

      If I understand correctly: you have a big ME controller in the middle, and when you turn power on it doesn't work? If the ME controller turns red the reason is usually that the controller is not correctly built. But I have no idea how you built it, because I have no screenshots or videos.
