You're literally right about your judgement call. I was bitching and moaning about Spiky Shield, but when you said that I wouldn't bat an eye if it went to Protect, I just shut up and started nodding my head because it's true. I think my only bias against it is the super limited distribution it has compared to Protect.
I think the bias is actually because protect is a move everyone has access to. So your bias makes you compare the value you get by having Spiky Shield over Protect instinctually. And while the chip is nice, none of the spiky shield users would have a vastly different competetive placement if they didn't have access to it.
@@hamdepaf6686 so basically it technically is the best move while it is not game changingly better than protect. It's just a very small and niche upgrade.
@@justdominik9812 yea in the actual game due to the distribution of protect it only is a relatively small upgrade to any pokemon who has it. While it is in actuality the move that provides the most value ingame.
Baneful bunkwr better
If you think about it in mechanical terms, it makes sense.
Taunt will shut down an entire category of moves for an opponent, but once they are affected by it they can work around it. At most, they will waste a Pokémon turn and PP if it goes off first in the turn they were about to use a status move.
Spiky Shield works entirely mid-turn, meaning every time you predict correctly with it your opponent will have wasted their Pokémon's turn, PP *and* get chipped if they used a contact move.
So the throwaway stealth rock joke was funny but there are several moves that are actually stronger. Stone axe and ceaseless edge both set the ever important hazards while also being a decent attack that cannot be taunted. But the best moves in singles aren’t even thought about much because they are banned even in Ubers, that being last respects, and the strongest move imo, baton pass.
I do wonder if stone axe is actually that good or is it kleav carrying it. Like edge has the advantage of being insanely clickable becsuse of spikes stacking, stone axe doesn’t get that. It’s 65bp and often not stab for most Pokémon. Is that chip worth it for the miss chance and the contact? I’m not entirely convinced. Feels more like a case by case comparison. Also doesn’t help that the best spinner quad resists axe already
I'd put last respect as the best move personally, not because I believe baton pass is any weaker than it, but because last respect is one man show of a move (in more than one sense)
It doesn't require any thinking just clicking and as long as you're faster and have no normal type, game over.
Baton pass enables the most broken strategy but it requires a lot to work with it. Baton pass, is just a lesser U-turn without all the set up moves that go alongside it.
Having baton pass does not make a pokemon broken, for that it needs to have baton pass + X move. Or X specific tech to prevent what that might counter the pass strategy.
Give a mon random mon baton pass, there is a good chance it won't do anything special with it, give a random mon last respect and there is a good chance it becomes an absolute menace instantly.
Which is why as a stand alone move I believe Last Respect to be stronger.
Shoutout to great set up moves that can make a pokemon's identity, like belly drum, geomancy, Tail Glow and all the omniboosts ones as well. Which are also great enablers (not the level of baton pass) and if we were to consider Z-moves, Extreme Evo boost had to be up there, if it was on any mon with slightly decent stats it would instantly be broken, as shown by the Evee pass back in gen 7 AG and even VGC.
@@tempestgreen1125 kleavor is actually holding stone axe back, it would actually be used everywhere if it was on better pokemon. Kleavor is pretty bad in the context of gen9 OU which means you don't see stone axe often either. It is obviously not as spammable as ceaseless edge from samurott, but it would be VERY useful on the right pokemon, like imagine if great tusk had it
All those moves are situationally good. Stealth rock is never not good.
@@slumbererer Stealth rock is never not good but also never completely broken. It can pull a lot of weight but as important and effective Stealth rocks are even when forgetting about boots, it definitely can't pull out the sheer strength of moves like last respect or the unstoppable set up potential of baton pass.
Last respect is not situationally good it's always good and only requires minimal support, as in get rid of the rare normal types or weaken them enough.
Baton pass chains make for one of the most broken strategy of all time with only limited and very specific counterplay, stealth rock doing 300% over 6 mons doesn't matter if the one last respect mon sweeps your entire team because it can or you have a fully set up mon in front of you that you can't kill and OH Kos your entire team.
Stealth rock were never banned for being broken, the move that hits harder than explosion without the drawback of killing yourself at the end of the game and the move that allows infinite set up were for a good reason.

Shoutout to my boy Scald - 80 BP, 100% accurate, 30% chance to burn. Cripple your opponents physical attackers while getting solid damage is very nice. A move to good they had to ruin it's distribution. Steam Eruption has 95% accuracy and only 5 pp in return for 30 more base power. It isn't a direct upgrade, and when you figure the move was used on bulky water types like Gastrodon, having the higher PP and no chance to miss may mean more in the long run of games. But yeah, I know the video was fairly fast paced but I'd rank this as at least an HM for good moves.
yeah Scald is good, but this gen wasn't kind to the move as now only a special group of mons get it as it's no longer learnable by like every water type in existence

Rock Slide and Ice Beam being here makes me want a video on gen 1 moves that are still good.
A lot of them are almost plain bread-and-butter tools, but there's something nice about not just 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it', but just a stubborn resistance to power creep. They have NEVER improved on Ice Beam, and I think it'd be neat to learn why.
Psychic, Thunderbolt, Flamethrower, Ice Beam, Fire Blast, and Earthquake are all moves that are simple, fundamental, and good moves.
Gen 1 Rock Slide didn't have a flinch chance

prediction during ad: surging strikes
Per Wolfy, the switch out effect of Parting Shot CANNOT be blocked by Clear Amulet. If you use Parting Shot on a Clear Amulet pokemon, it will make no stat changes, and switch you out. This knowledge gap was actually taken advantage of on Magic Bounce Hatterine in a tournament recently, as a player bluffed that it wouldn't switch the Hatterine out by putting a Clear Amulet, and not a single person even attempted it all tournament.
This is not true in general. Only true for magic bounce because the bounce happens before the stat drop.
No salt cure is crazy to me, that move is insane
This vid is mainly for doubles vgc and not smogon
@@xxcridonxx7614He mentions both, but I would argue that being way more dominant in Singles and basically unseen in VGC is enough to warrant excluding it, since the rest of these moves are either broken in both or broken in one, and at least solid in the other.
@@Toadiferous I agree. I play singles on showdown and know how busted salt cure is but moxie is primarily vgc where stall isn’t as popular

"we don't count mythical signature moves"
*dark void smeargle*
I feel like a super cool “semi-main-series” game (kinda like the Legends games) would be one in which we don’t go to a new region per say , but instead go to a place that’s super into unique styles of battling, which gives us a bunch of new moves! Like a mix of Urishifu’s lore and the battle arenas from USUM!
3:30 if theres a calyrex on each team, you can have a pokemon using wide guard to protect your calyrex from an astral barrage or a glacial lance
Honestly, I genuinely subscribe to the idea that your most accurate and consistently powerful moves like thunderbolt or close combat are the best moves, the ones you get a consistently solid amount of damage out of without any gimmicks. Damaging moves with high accuracy are always extremely valuable even with a drawback, and your support mons are there to either hinder your opponent's ability to use those moves, or make sure your strong moves hit hard and fast
another reason as to why i'd put spiky shield over baneful bunker is bc opponents can actually use the poison against you, like they could use a contact move into the baneful bunker to make them immune to spore, will o wisp and thunder wave which have much more game changing effects than poison, even if poison is doing a lot of damage
Protect, next video please
“I won’t include any Mythical’s signature move.” You totally forgot about Dark Void and Smeargle running wild in VGC Gen 5 & 6

2 min in and i will throw in a singles honorable mention for Salt Cure. In all my years of playing, its the first move that i find myself consistently clicking over stealth rock.
If you start the game with SC instead of SRs, most people immediately switch out as they assume youre clicking rocks next so double Salt Cure is a highly valuable start.
From there Garg is in the triple threat position. With the info gathered you can chose to: 1. Stealth Rocks 2. Triple Salt cure 3. Switch to set up your offense/defense

Counteroffer : I'll take 20 well designed Pokémon and 50 new moves over a flat 100 new moves.
Not a single mention of Revival blessing? Sure, only 2 mons can learn it, but if we're only looking at how good the move is it easily wins.
Eh. 1 use per game makes it legit hard to justify. Even if something like ho-oh got it, what does it drop? Not sacred fire, not flying stab, not protect. You're left with either tailwind or revival and ur likely more value out of tailwind in doubles.
Revival Blessing cannot make you win. It can only make you not lose.
great video! I'm kinda surprised glare wasn't considered in the disruption category as it's just 100% accurate twave that hits ground types
A bit unrelated, but in Pokemon Xenoverse, there's a better Rock Slide called Subwoofer, a 70 power physical Sound-type move with 100% accuracy that has a flinch chance and hits both opponents. Yeah, Soundproof Mon can block it, but it's not super common as an ability. It'd probably be at the same place as Rock Slide on this list if it was in base pokemon.

To the point of clicking protect after you know you have lost, especially in a best of 3 format, its all about scouting as much info as possible. At least before vgc had open team sheets lmaoo
Trick Room needs a buff like an Trick Room Extender.
Bc u need a very bulky trick roomer ( Especially during times with Ghost and Dark Type Attackers and Abilities that can halve ur Defenses) or Support/Redirection to get it off first place. Fife Turns is nice but in a world where ur opponent probably can protect in 3/5 turns + most like have at least 1 Fake Out Mon 🤮.
"U-Turn is the only one of these no pokemon is immune to". What about Shedinja?
on VGC where PP stall is out Detect is actually good since it has +-60% to double detect instead of 50 of the other moves
“I won’t be counting mythical moves”
2016 smeargle: “allow us to introduce ourselves”
it's clearly hold hands
I'm surprised there was no mention of moves like follow me, ally switch, and rage powder
I think having a category for priority and putting Fake Out and Extreme Speed against each other there would've been more interesting (though if we include Prankster status moves then I guess the point is moot lol, though I'd personally exclude them, seeing as that would be like calling Brave Bird or Draining Kiss a priority move because specific mons can turn moves that aren't intended to be priority into priority moves).
I personally think Fake Out is better than Taunt overall, but I also completely agree with everything you said about Taunt. And from a strictly disruptive perspective, Taunt does that better. So it's just weird to compare them when they're good for different reasons, even if that reason is broadly considered "disruption." Fake Out can set up a win con offensively as much is it can just be an annoying disruption tool. Taunt is basically only ever disruption. Knock Off can also be an offensive tool, but it doesn't fit anywhere else, unlike Fake Out which has a reasonable discussion in the argument of best priority moves in the game.
As a singles player, I was literally about to click off the video, but then he summed up my whole life in stealth rocks. At least he knows🎉
Why no shed tail for switching moves? I feel like setting up a sub is more valuable than doing a little bit of damage

In terms of attacking moves, at least in singles, thousand arrows deserves to mention.
I think the question should be 'if every Pokémon suddenly got this move, how many of them would run it?' and since everything already runs Protect if it can, this feels right

Prankster metronome. It can be any move, even spiky shield!
1:15 Smeargle: “It might seem crazy what I’m bout to say”
Moral of the story:

No one really talks about how strong moonblast is.
Its a 95 power 100 accuracy special fairy move with a 30% chance to drop the targets special attack while having a max of 24 pp so its super strong and super spammable.
I’m calling it now; gen 10 is going to introduce a protect that switches at the end of the turn.
I think you couldve included a section for priority moves specifically; that way, you can have fake out, follow me, and helping hand duke it out before facing off against taunt and spiky shield
A very small "category" would be party field moves, like Mist and Safeguard. The winner would be Tailwind of course.
Bro right when i needed
Thank you
If Mythical moves were considered this would be an absolute Double Iron Bash sweep, probably the best attacking move of all time especially if it were to be on a fast steel type
Nah rock slide or even the calyrex moves are better
I think they should add the stat, weight, where it affects a small % speed/def inversely . This way bigger/smaller of the same Pokémon varies. There’s already move related to weight. Example shed tails makes a bit lighter 😂 hence faster
Bro went talking about the strongest moves without even an honorable mention of splash, unbelievable
I love that Stealth Rock is just the uncontested king of singles.
I feel like Spore got kinda shafted not even being mentioned alongside the other status moves
100% accurate move that shuts down a pokemon for at minimum one turn, at most 5 turns
Taunt does totally beat it, especially since spore is mostly on slow Pokemon, but spore is an important reason to even run taunt, it's a very powerful move
Another note for Trick Room; since you wanna be slow, you can invest into bulk, whilst still outspeeding the opponent.
I’d be remissed to not mention Encore, and I’m slightly surprised it’s not on this list, as catching someone with an encore can force bad plays and give you a pretty insane advantage, but it’s definitely not better than taunt.
“No mythical moves because they’re not allowed in vgc”
Dark void smeargle: 🤨
Follow me deserved a mention. The ability to protect a mon from 95% of moves while also allowing it to act it super busted. Way better than taunt imo.
7:58 Why do you hate me twice? Because i like to stall with my poison heal toxic orb Breloom with leech seed and protect on singles? 😢😢😢
Considering Metagross already gets Hammer arm, Gigaton Hammer would be a scary yet thematically appropriate possibility. Plus, non-dragon Psuedos need some love lately
this means mew is near to perfection as it can learn u-turn, rockslide, taunt, spiky shield, trick room.
I mean... The only reason I would argue that taunt should technically be considered the strongest is it is literally a move that countrrs spikey shield/protect... Along with a bunch of other moves. Not saying you're necessarily wrong expecially when something is so hard to quantify as the best but just playing devils advocate.
So, question. Even though feint is considered horribly niche, could it technically be a sleeper pick for best? In VGC, when feint is used to bypass protect moves, it leaves them open to other Pokémon to get through with damage on that same turn.
The reason Silk Trap and probably Burning Bulwark as well got the King's Shield treatment is (most likely) cause Smeargle was in the Indigo Disk, GF prob wated to avoid another Dark Void situation.
Totally agree with your findings, winner of most underrated move is freeze dry and flying press. Double type moves are insane.
