  • The long-awaited footswich for the new-generation Marshall DSLs is here!
    One note: the master volume change was somewhat cancelled out by the automatic volume leveling on my camera. It was a lot more noticeable in person.

    I'm looking at this exact combo of amp and pedal, so I'm happy to see it being demoed together. Pro tip: Don't have the guitar between the amp and camera, all we hear are the strings being hit. :P

    I like that Angus uses full cords instead of power/Bar cords. A lot of people think that he could not shred, but he could shred like a Beast when he wanted to. He was capable of a lot more than he presented.

      Just like Eddie Van Halen always said, he's underrated. Not so much anymore though. You'll always find him these at or near the top of any "best guitarists of all time" lists. The man is brilliant. And yes, he most certainly can shred when he wants to. But like the best guitarists, he knows you don't always go for the throat with your leads. There's far more to guitar playing than just "shredding." That doesn't make one a great guitarist.

      I was not a Marshall guy either even though I grew up on 80s rock and metal. I didn't want a power soak just to play at a reasonable volume. But these newer DSLs have plenty of drive with or without a pedal in front. Plus the multiple drive modes make it really usable as a standalone. With my Headrush in front of the clean channel, I get instant gig-worthy sound for variety rock covers where I need to sound like 30 different guitarists : )

    Hey brother, me again. Marshall USA has a fix for the lag when channel switching(doesnt happen with a cold amp but as the amp warms up it gets worse which i didnt notice i thought it was always there until i saw the marshall forum post about a fix, sure enough mine does the same thing. Works when I first turn it on an switches effectively then start having a pause in between switching as the amp warms up) and the fact the fx loop won't engage on the crunch channel etc. Turns out the earlier DSL100HR and DSL40CR need a firmware update and a part replacement. Should all be under warranty. Mines going into the shop this week. A few guys got Marshall USA on the phone recently and they are finally admitting to being aware of the problem cause it's so wide spread. They brushed me off the first time I called at launch. Anyways hurray!!!

    It looks like you assigned switch #4 (OD2) to a higher Master Volume level. Am I correct? Or do you strive for unity gain with all four modes and just work your MV toggle switch on the foot pedal as the source of your lead boost. Do you always use MV2 for your leads/boosts?

    • @milesfisher3185
      @milesfisher3185  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, since the pedal isn't programmable, it's just a matter of setting your channel volumes to be where you want them. I only used the 1 channel for clean, then the OD1/OD2 for crunch and lead. That made it easier to equalize the volumes. But yes, generally, I "assign" master 2 to the #4 switch for lead solo, use #3 for rhythm crunch, and channel 1 for clean. I basically skip the #2 button, but some people use it as an extra crunch option. It is louder than the #1 when you do that though. So then you can assign Master 2 to Channel 1 which would help equal the volume. It's a balancing act for sure, but I'm used to it. I've played 3 and 4 channel amps for years now, and right before I start my set I stomp all of them in order, testing what the overall volumes sound like.

  • @jimmymincin1125
    @jimmymincin1125 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi. Great video. So do you use the #4 (OD2) footswitch as a lead boost or do you toggle the MV switch for your boost? Also, I assume the MV2 is designed to be a lead channel; the MV1 as a rhythm channel. Is that how you see it, and do you always use them aa such?

  • @gbferrell
    @gbferrell 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    One point I think this video is missing is: this pedal can't do what the stock 2 button switch does- it can't switch from channel to channel with the press of just one button like you can with the 2 button switch- this avoids tap dancing on songs like Kryptonite where you need to switch from clean to distortion and back again several times throughout the song- one button does it all for songs like this but with the 6 button switch (correct me if I'm wrong- I don't have the 6 button) to do the same thing you would have to go back and forth between the clean button and the distortion button. This pedal is cool but I would prefer the one button switching over the ability to switch between 4 channels with 4 different buttons. It would be great if the 6 button pedal could do both but it doesn't appear that it can.

    • @milesfisher3185
      @milesfisher3185  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you are correct, there's not a practical way to make one button on this switch from the clean channel to the distortion channel and back again. But they're right next to each other. The 6 button switch makes it act more like a 3 or 4 channel amp, where each switch turns on and then selects the gain mode of each channel, unlocking all the gain modes. If you're main thing is to have just one switch to go back and forth, then the 2 button switch is your solution. My main thing is that I want the dual masters to be selectable by footswitch during a performance. So many players when I'm doing sound don't do anything to boost their volume for solos. I do, and since our band is self mixed from the stage, I think it is very important.

    • @gbferrell
      @gbferrell 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@milesfisher3185 Thank you for the confirmation Miles. Yes, the more important thing to me is the ability to switch between clean and gain at the push of a single button. I also do most of the lead vocals in our band, so in a song like Kryptonite it makes it easier to just have one button to switch between channels without having to look down at my feet while keeping my head straight to sing into the microphone. I like the idea of the 6 button switch- that would be very useful too- it's just too bad that both options aren't available on it. From what I understand, even a midi switch wouldn't solve this problem. As you point out, you can switch between master volumes with the 6 button switch, but you can do that with the 2 button too- just not as granularly between all 4 channels. That was also one of the reasons I wanted this amp- to be able to boost volume by just hitting one switch- unfortunately, with the 2 button switch, the volume boost is limited to switching between classic and ultra gain. If you like a lot of crunch- even with rhythm, like I do, it's not quite as satisfying as I would like. With the 6 button, as you say, you can switch between master volumes for lead boost on the same gain setting. If I want that with my current setup with this amp, I will have to resort to the volume pedal on my Digitech RP1000.

    • @gbferrell
      @gbferrell 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should add that with my current setup, it is VERY difficult to boost the lead seamlessly (if not impossible) on Kryptonite and then switch to clean because my foot is dedicated to pressing the button between clean and gain- not being able to lower the volume on the volume pedal at the same time. After the first lead, I have to immediately switch to clean, meaning that the higher volume on the volume pedal has to be lowered first before switching or the clean rhythm will be too loud. Maybe the 6 button switch could solve that problem- albeit with tap dancing. Complicated! For now I will have to be able to be satisfied with an unboosted lead on that song.

      Yep, same here.
      The 1 extremely major thing that I have found with my CR is the amount of hiss..."White Noise" in the Effects Loop.
      I've never encountered that in any Amps Loop I've used in my 4+ decades of playing.
      I've had to add a Gate to my Loop to get rid of it.
      Sooooo, 1 Gate in my Pre Gain Effects and a second in the Loop.
      Oh well, a really inexpensive Joyo Gate does the trick perfectly.
      Yeah, they're cheap and made with a plastic case, it's designed exactly like the old MXR Gate...not the Smart Gate.
      Just a Threshold control, True Bypass and works perfectly.
      Wish the rest of my Pedals were as inexpensive!!....Those 2 cheap Gates work great to the couple thousand bucks on my board!

    Specific question -- if you have, say OD1, already assigned to MV2, how are you going to then use MV2 as a lead boost? That can go for any of the four modes. If you have any of them assigned to MV2 (red), you can't then step on the #5 switch and use it as lead boost -- the MV2 is already red -- because that's how you assigned it. The only choice you would then have is going to MV1 green, if you stepped on the MV switch. Green is the rhythm MV1, which defeats the purpose of having MV2 as a lead volume. Make sense? Very perplexed with this. Can you please enlighten me?

    All right so the million dollar question does this pedal switch have the same delay that the one that comes with the amp has when switching channels?
    On the original pedal switch that comes with it there is a 250 ms delay almost 1/ quarter of a second which makes it not useable live..

    Thanks for the video. Is there a volume jump when you switch between the 4 gain channels? I know I can preset the volume levels using the master volume for red/red and green/green. But with this footswitch you can choose red/green and green/red. Just wondering if the volume can be pre-programmed.

      It's not bad at all on the ultra channel but on the clean when you change gain modes it's a very noticeable jump. I use the dual masters to equal it out. Put the clean on the "solo" master level and it seems to balance out.

    for the life of me i cant figure out why one of those buttons does not toggle the Reverb, the only reason id want another pedal is to toggle the amps digital spring reverb, i guess ill just have to use my Hall of fame reverb pedal in the loop and keep the stock two button switch that comes with the amp. i cant even get a MIDI controller to toggle the reverb so frustrating.

    • @michaelinglis8516
      @michaelinglis8516 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@keithdarling8290 Actually it's very common to have a few pedals going in the effects loop and turning it on/off at the footswitch means you'll only be pressing one button right next to your gain which is why you'll probably be turning off the mod effects anyways(to turn on the gain for a lead tone/heavy rythem tone). Why would you want to turn the reverb on an off that's rediculous? You either dial in a tone with reverb or you don't. If you want another tone without reverb dial it in with one of the od channels with the reverb dialed out. It's a very suttle reverb anyways, more of a tone shaping reverb than an effect. Turning it on and off(which is one more thing you'll have to press mid song) isn't going to make enough audible differnce to most people anyways. You absolutly should be using your HOF if you need a reverb *effect* in your song/jam. There's a reason the reverb is no longer an on off footswitchable option, everyone using the old dsl's then finally Marshall realized how stupid an pointless it was to real giging musicians. It was taking up prime pedal real estate that is far better suited turning on/off the loop. Which has several other applications btw, if you still are confused I will happily list them out.

I've kinda gotten used to it since I've had the amp since it came out. On a thread I posted a guy said he tried a mesa boogie pedal instead with his dsl and the delay got better but who knows. If you didn't know already, it's there to cut out the pop and reverb bleedover. Not able to test this for sure, but I wouldn't try it based on lots of web searches to this effect. The DSL looks like it has two 1/4" footswitch jacks, which are probably series on/off (closed/open) switches. The DSL100cr uses only a single guitar cable for everything, probably based on resistance. It is highly likely that the resistance type switches are calibrated for only one model of amp each, hence the different model numbers of the pedals.
