I think some duck tape would work well also to cover the back of the hand. I like the brass insert but I was cringing as you cut the female coupler with that ridge running along the length. You had a lot of tool over the rest and you presented the entire length of the square carbide cutter into that ridge. A round carbide presented at about 45 degrees I think would be much safer. Allows for a slicing cut. I haven’t tried it on brass yet but in my mind I think that would be better. Purely speculation. An interesting video and a very nice result. Brass threads seems like a great alternative to chasing threads.

Nice video! To get the lid to line up …. What if you screwed the threads into the base all the way, and then applied the epoxy and set the lid onto the threads where the grain lines up? Just a thought I had while watching the video 🤠

Could work. My next urn, I did an inlay on the top, so it wasn't an issue.

The silicone patch is a good idea but for short term use why wouldn’t a latex glove work just as well? Long term use would make the hand too sweaty. The use of the brass insert was a great choice over pvc, very thoughtful. Also, how did you match the threading so the sap wood streak line up especially since you epoxied the threaded piece prior to final fit? Next time could you partially thread the male into the female then align and epoxy the lid to the grain of the base? That would take care of both the alignment issue and during finish turning centering the lid to the base.

A nitrile or latex glove doesn't have the thickness the scar pad has - and even though, for the most part, they tear easily, they could still tangle and cause an injury. The scar pad simply can't tangle because it doesn't wrap AROUND anything.
The threads and grain match up was mostly serendipitous. I wanted to ensure they aligned straight and they did at first, BUT, one of the burrs on the thread wore down where it was jamming before, and the lid turns about ⅓ too far ... It still is a striking piece. One I'm pretty proud of.

When cutting the brass rings, is there a reason that you did not use a live center in the tailstock?

There's not really a reason TO use a live center, especially since these pieces are so short. If they were longer, I probably would have, but the entire length with the niple threaded in was only 3 inches.
