- The Carter and Son 16 TPI thread chaser is a new and innovative development in the arena of cutting threads using hand tools. Sam runs through the main features of this tool-the main feature being the male chaser and the female chaser are at either end of the same tool. He also does a little thread chasing. He concludes that this chaser does an excellent job.

Hi Sam. Public service comment - please help.
Our woodturning community has a high percentage of older people in the more high risk group regarding the Corona virus. You are an extremely prominent and respected turner and "You Tuber". And as such - perhaps you could include in a fresh video - a comment on the value of self-isolation. Your positive comments will go a long way. Hi Sam, great video, I just started thread chasing and my threads shavings don't look anything like yours.....lol....I have the Carter and Son tool...tried sharpening it but not getting nice shavings like in your video....is there a preferred type of wood that I should be using...I tried it on maple....thx
Danny Yes wood is everything-well almost. But if you don't have a very dense, close grained wood, chasing will be difficult and you won't get those fine, curly shavings. Here is a list of thread chasing wood from my website. www.wyomingwoodturner.com/pdfs/Mywoodlist.pdf Sam

Sam, couldn’t one grind a radius on the existing strait chaser and achieve the same out come?! Just something to think about. :-)
My Carter and son thread chaser arrived today. And went straight to the lathe and impressed me right out of the gate. Made perfect threads on the first try. Very good how to video. Thank you Sam!!

The advantage I have found with the armrest tool is you have less temptation to push the tool into the wood and a better chance of allowing the threads to pull themselves.
That looks a good tool but have you come across the Ashley Iles unichaser in the USA. One tool does internal and external threads. I've just purchased one and I'm really getting into chasing threads.
I have seen John Berkeley from the UK demonstrate it in a DVD. But I have not seen it here in the U.S. Sam

Sam, what is that tool you are using to hold the END of the threader?
This is an armrest tool. It prevents having to move the tool rest perpendicular to the bed ways every time you address end grain or chase the female thread. It is very useful.
Great review/overview Sam! That's a really cool tool, C&S makes some great stuff. Might need to pick one of those up and give chasing a shot finally. Been itching to give it a go for years having been introduced to it in your videos, thanks for introducing me to it!

When shapening ghe thread chaser, which edge do you sharper?
Jon, you sharpen the top of the tool. You never want to touch the front or the teeth of the tool. Sam

Very helpful video, Sam. I am pretty new to turning and don't have much interest in the specialized tools, with the exception of thread chasing. I got a lot of ideas where I want to enclose other things within something I've turned, like Electronics. What I I'm not sure about, before I invest in a set of tools, is how small a person can go with these. Based on your experience, do you believe it would be possible to chase threads into something as small as three quarters of an inch in internal diameter? I realize it can certainly go figure, but I was thinking about creating Harry Potter wands that could be threaded, for battery replacement. Thanks for any advice and for another very helpful video.
My lathe will only go down to 600 rpm. Should I avoid tthread chasing? Thanks for the video.
I like the two in one concept. I haven’t tried thread chasing yet but have been watching videos about it and looking at chasing tools. One thing I have been wondering about is the armrest tool. What would be the advantage of using it over just turning the tool rest perpendicular to the bed? Or is it just a preference thing.

Those look like 60 degree threads. Is that correct? I thought 45 degrees for wood were stronger.
I will have to check out more videos on how you determine the sizes needed for threading wood. Thanks for the demo.
