Woodturning - Can You Turn 100% Wet Wood?

  • Welcome to Ian Mac Woodturning, In this weeks video I had another go at the Eucalyptus.
    This video was recorded the day after the Tree was cut down and was more of an experiment to see if it'll hold up at all, I can confirm that it didn't hold up too well and completely cracked and warped.. but it's okay because we have a huge pile of it that we'll let dry.
    It is inconclusive the actual moisture % of this Eucalyptus but it was out of range of the moisture meter I own, green Eucalyptus can be in excess of 100% when freshly cut so I believe this to be 100% mc.
    If we do future wet wood experiments I'll make sure to record a video one week later so you can see the results!

    I will show you piece, 2 weeks after turning it on the next video! Catch the next video on Sunday. I would have included it in this video but completely forgot until I was editing!

    Turning green wood can be such a pleasure. You just have to be prepared for it to crack.... It's not a defect (bug), it's a feature.
    I just recently turned a large bowl from a piece of Jacaranda crotch. It was not this fresh but still very wet. The bowl was literally drying and cracking as I was turning it. It made getting smooth curves very difficult but all the cracks got filled in the end. I think the cracks are what made this piece so wonderful.
    Great work! I love watching your videos.

      Thank you mate! This was more of a play about as it was almost certainly going to warp and crack!

    You can turn wet wood. I (and many other woodturners), have done this multiple times. You just need to turn it thin enough that the moisture will evaporate without the piece cracking.

      A very good wood for wet turning is Leylandii, no matter the MC it seems to hold its shape every time I’ve worked with it.

    The way the shavings just POURED off was amazing, Ian ! They could be dried and sold as barbecue kindling, or something like that, no ?
    Erhmm .. somewhat insulting question: regardless of the finished article's not holding up - what WAS said finished article ? [embarrassed grin]

    • @IanMacWoodturning
      @IanMacWoodturning  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It definitely could be, I need to find uses for shavings a little more as there is a lot of them! It’s more of an ornamental piece for shelves, whether that be a pen pot, posey holder, an ornament on its own.. we’ll say it’s up for interpretation 😂. Thanks for your comment!

      😂 we should have recorded a bit at the end showing it now, much the same as you’ve described Dave haha, we’ve both got plenty of it left though mate so a bit of experimenting had to be done!
