If you could do an Elden Ring one that would be amazing, also Digital Foundry are fantastic but don't dive into HDR in such detail.
The worst thing is, they aren't even trying... They're handed a solution, like the HGIG console level HDR adjustments, allowing us to set Peak-brightness, Max tonemap luminanse, and minimum luminanse. This is all we need to perfectly calibrate our TV, and have the console work it's magic. But of the 60 games I have installed on my PS5, only a very few games utilize the PS5 HDR adjustment. The rest (those with in-game hdr settings) simply bypass what you have calibrated in the HGIG HDR calibration. And you're left with sub-par in-game stupid hdr setup, that mostly can't be calibrated to a satisfying level.
Yes! Thank you. I noticed harsh overblown highlights as well( even producing eye strain/headache). I had brightness at -3 and highlights -3, originally. It still seems to bright/harsh I’ll try these out!
We really need a damn set of standards for HDR already. Will even 1% of PS5 owners see/understand all this to make the correct changes to settings? Of course not.
this is the biggest problem which is that hdr itself isn't a standard but just a bunch of very rough approximate guidelines that are often times debated and to a certain extent subject to interpretation. The whole thing is one big bad joke and most likely this way on purpose to confuse the average non technical consumer into buying a more expensive TV set them otherwise they would need.
I got it calibrated going back and forth (what works for my tv is -2, -5, -3) but see I might want to reduce the highlights a bit more. And while -5 for shadows works great during the day (in game), nights can get pretty dark. However the shimmering is giving me headaches, so I'm playing on an old 1080p projector now in SDR, max 50 nits brightness. (Cinema level). And it's gorgeous on that, no eye strain reading the small fonts either at 92" screen. Much less shimmering down sampled to 1080p. 4K HDR, it's a mess. I had to set data transfer rate to -2 as well since the screen kept randomly blacking out, HDMI not keeping up. 2160p60 4:2:0 is max that it can handle without drops. My projector is 4:4:4 RGB 1080p, same color resolution as 2160p 4:2:0, but much less contrast, no headaches. It has a waveform analysis pop up build in as well, so much easier to calibrate it that way. On the TV it remains guess work :/

Even setting HDR brightness to the default setting seems too low to me and I can increase it all the way to 10 and increase shadows to 3 and it looks much better imo. Ofc, I'm just playing it by eye and not using any measurement tools so it would be cool to see you calibrate HDR settings on several other screens rather than just the LG oled when do doing these types of videos. Can’t thank you enough Vincent for providing these videos, you really are one of the only people out there talking about this stuff who actually knows what he’s on about. Can concur. If using DTM, the default sliders/settings work best while DTM does its job. No fiddling needed really (same goes with other games). But I can see those who want the most "accurate" picture settings following Vincent's settings.
The calibration screen is not intended to specify exact black or white levels. It's used more like a color grading filter, where it's about the overall look and contrast of the shadows and highlights. The game is not designed to conform to your TV's exact limitations like HGIG. Setting peak highlight to match your tv will considerably reduce contrast, and not look natural. I'm currently using Brightness -2, Shadows -4, and Highlights 0. This results in a very natural looking image, with pretty much no visible highlight clipping in typical gameplay. I'm sure if I measured it, there's stuff being clipped, but there's nothing visible to the human eye. Adjusting to try to minimize absolute clip will not always be the best approach for ideal image quality, if it reduces highlights to an unnaturally dim level. Default shadow settings also leave the image too flat, with not enough contrast, and shadows that are a bit too washed out..
Yea I think your right on this. I've been using -4, -2, 1. Lowering the highlights below 0 makes things take on a dull haziness. There's something off with this though. Vincent's measurements have to be right though. I'm using hgig on lg cx and I'm not seeing a lot of clipping or at least to where its degrading the picture. It must be a really small minute part of the picture that's clipping
@@roncarder89 Exactly. I'm sure 99% of what's clipping is just in the sun, and that's perfectly okay as long as you're still seeing a clear difference between the sky/clouds and the sun. It's more important that the general luminance of the highlights overall looks like it has realistic levels of brightness and contrast to it, and that the gradient from deep and dark shadows to the midtones feels like a natural level of contrast. It's important to note that brightness does affect both shadows and highlights as well, so it's important to go back and forth and adjust them to where it feels most natural to your eyes. I have some HDR color grading experience, as well as HDR calibration experience, and I've seen a ton of HDR content, so I tend to have a good feel for what looks correct, and what doesn't. I don't feel that Vincent's settings will be utilizing the dynamic range all that well, and won't deliver the most natural looking image either. I do think the game could benefit from using the HGIG menus in addition to the menus they already have for full control over every aspect of the image (5 points: black level, shadows, midtones, highlights, and peak nits), but I honestly feel that doing that wouldn't make a HUGE difference in overall image dynamics compared to what we have now.
Appreciate the insight, Andy. Posts like yours just remind me of how poorly implemented HDR and HDR adjustment screens are in video games. There really needs to be some type of standard practice within the industry in regards to how it’s implemented, because it really is all over the map.
@@BPipkins unfortunately, it's not really realistic to have a perfect standard, because color grading has enough subjective nature to it that people don't always agree with what the user would need to control. I actually like controls like these where it isn't just about the specs of the tv, but more about the look of the actual image.
I'm curious if Vincent has made videos over HDR on Windows 10/11. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of content touching over that. And I don't mean covering HDR monitors, but still using TV's like his LG and showing HDR on there. I'm currently using a Samsung Q80R TV to play some PC games in HDR and I noticed some games look different on PC and console regarding HDR.
This type of video is nice and all, it'll send me in the right direction. But it would be even BETTER to not assume that EVERYONE has an OLED and go over which settings to use for those of us with higher brightness displays. With that monitor it would obviously be easy enough to be like "Use these settings for a 700 nit OLED, and use these settings for a 1,500 nit LCD."
Then find another video of a guy covering non OLED? Vincent already puts in a lot of work, he covers true next generation gaming experiences, that’s what the content is tailored for and it makes sense. He doesn’t have to assume anything, it’s just that you aren’t his priority. TH-cam is endless, you stumbled on a video that isn’t what you’re looking for so move onto the next. The last thing this wholesome channel needs is entitled whiners like you in the comments.

Thank you so much! I need this for the next god of war, was never able to properly tune the HDR in the first one and found myself constantly changing it back and forth
Gaming Tech Channel already gave us this information. But its still nice that Vincent came to the same conclusions.
I really miss those times when we would only start the game and enjoy it right away instead of having to fiddle with performance and calibration settings depending on the game and TV we are using.
wtf that's stupid
you can still do it easy play SDR xd
As a lot of people have said at this point, I'd also love to see these videos for every big release. I love the comfort of being told, "these are the best HDR settings for ___". If you could do an Elden Ring one that would be amazing, also Digital Foundry are fantastic but don't dive into HDR in such detail.
The day I got this game, every day I keep playing around with brightness and shadow. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for confirming that 😎
HDR has become a nightmare on these consoles until it becomes standardised it will just continue to be a mess.
Like Hdr Tvs,They haven’t matured
Here is the summary ;)
HDR Settings in the game:
Brightness: -2
Highlights: -8
Is it settings for performance mode or resolution mode?
Yes! Thank you. I noticed harsh overblown highlights as well( even producing eye strain/headache). I had brightness at -3 and highlights -3, originally. It still seems to bright/harsh I’ll try these out!
Thanks so much ive been trying to get the right setting for a while now!! love the content and cannot wait for more!
For the Sony x900H, what would be the recommending settings?
On the TV it remains guess work :/
Yeah. I mean there are solutions like Dolby Vision or even the PS5 HDR calibration. They just need to agree on something
@@michi9955 How can they when even Sony's owned 1st party studio gurella games doesn't use it. Sony need to be the one's who enforce for their platform otherwise this will keep happening for other games and studios too.
Part of the problem is devs not using them.
Interesting. When I first started the game and started messing with settings.. I had hgig.. - 2 Brightness and - 3 highlights. But I've been using DTM off - 1 brightness and + 6 highlights and I think I like that better. Either way the game looks really good and I'm off to try Vincent's settings. ✌🏻
I remember sliding in the Super Mario cartridge and pushing the power button. That was all I needed to be happy.
You can still do that and be happy. This is a hobby for enthusiasts who spend a lot of money on their TVs and time to get the most out of it to enjoy the best HDR content possible.
If you don't care about this stuff, just skip it.
@@b0nz1official What I meant is that I now am an enthusiast who spent a lot of money on a TV and need to know all this to be happy.
@b0nz1official
I wouldn't say that necessarily. It doesn't take an enthusiast to notice when something is blown out, crushed, or doesn't look quite right
Yeah, and now you almost need to be a professional calibrator to play a damn game. I’m so glad I got out of gaming.
@@wingman-1977 Bullshit. You don't NEED to do any of this. You are taking advice from a professional calibrator that explains this stuff for you. If it wasn't for Vincent you wouldn't even know.
Thank you man, I think every major game developer must consult to you before releasing their game.
I need one of these videos for Destiny 2’s new HDR update.
Destiny HDR Is broken
Used these settings on my Sony XH90 and the game looks much better.
You promised this video, an you've delivered, thank you for the great content! 👍
Thank you Vincent! Taking my time and enjoying the game, always appreciate your knowledge to improve the visuals!
Curious of what a good setting would be for the A90J, and wonder if you HDR calibration method has any effects on this game, and then which sliders to tinker with
This. For example, what should HDR Tone Mapping be set to on the Sony? Gradation Preferred, or Off?
@@Roboto82 i have X90J and I find it looks better off
Look at the sun turn your tone mapping setting on and change between the 2 will be the best way to know what you prefer I found with it on it made the sun less bright
I'm using the -2 brightness and -6 highlights setting and the game looks almost perfect now
83" A90J AND FW = PARADISE
Just turn on Dynamic Tone Mapping and forget trying to find the best picture because it's impossible.
TURN ON...COLOR SPACE...ADOBE RGB...WOW HUGE DIFFERENT
Thumps up from Germany!!! Best Channel for Settings!!!
Is this video still valid with recent updates to the game? And would these settings still be applicable to an LED display? I'm using the Sony X90J.
No, they're not valid as the game uses the PS5 system calibrations settings now. All you change now is the highlight settings. You want to go to 5 or above.
@@mrchiledonut Thanks for the input!
Sony just released a new update for the xh90 ... Firmware v6.1576 ... it shall fix the VRR compabilty... would love to see a test on your channel
Cheers Vincent! People like you help a lot much appreciated! Wish it just had dolby vision on ps5!
I have the Acer X27 which is an HDR10 mini led monitor which peaks out at around 1200 nits and I don't think these settings work too well for my setup unfortunately. There actually seems to be very little visual difference with these settings and then turning off HDR completely in-game. Regardless, I still learned a lot from this video as always so thank you for your hard work!
Can’t thank you enough Vincent for providing these videos, you really are one of the only people out there talking about this stuff who actually knows what he’s on about.
But man do I wish the game companies would do a better job of standardising this stuff. The fact we have to calibrate settings for both the game and our TVs on a game by game basis is just crazy… HDR gaming will never become a mainstream thing if this keeps up.
Yeah for real. With SDR all you had to worry about was just one brightness setting for each game.
Using +2, -8 and 0 on my c1 OLED. However I play it more my q90t qled. The hdr impact is just on another level on the qled. Like whenever I go from the OLED to qled, I'm gobsmacked on how better it looks on the qled. OLED has its moments though where it looks better
Meh, I just can’t deal with FALD halo effect.
@@manuel0578 fun fact, look it up. Even on an OLED, even though there is no blooming, our eyes make it look like there is. I see it a lot on my OLED. Mainly just during loading screens where everything is black and you have a white symbol. Same can be said with a qled. Blooming is only visible in that same screen. Once you play regular content, you don't notice it at all
@@sweedishpie360 Turn off the lights.
I found you when I bought lg c1 and you have been great since!
My best hdr settings on my Sony Bravia is what my eyes see not what some fancy machine sees.
Vinny T does it again
Amazing to see your thoughts on videogame settings. I hope you keep talking about some titles here and there once in a while.
On "PS5 I always my settings on resolution mode I have Horizon Forbidden West in favor. And never use hdr. Now my graphics are crisp. I did that day . My settings are to my liking. I also took my highlights all the way to the left. Good video 👍
Love the technical breakdown and seeing how you diagnose this. Fascinating.
The game just added actual HGIG support so this video could use an update
So much knowledge. So much generous sharing. Thank you… so much.
Fanastic work! Calibrating HDR is such a pain in the arse for your average boy like me -- these insights are so useful!
Yes this channel has quickly become not only the go-to for new TVs, firmware updates, but now, MAKE MY GAME LOOK RIGHT!! :)
Speaking of which LG CX just got hit with a huge firmware update in North America. I’ve dug through it but don’t see anything obvious different. Wonder why it was so large. Took a while to install.
Go to that far left area of the map with beaches. Look at the sand and building textures there. I dialed the dynamic range settings until you could see the differences in shades in the sand in bright sunlight as best I could.
Vincent, wich mode do you think Is Better , 30 or 60 FPS ( resolution vs performance)?
And here I am, with no OLED TV (just LCD), no PS5, and don't even own the game (but will in the future), yet still curious if those settings will work for me. 😅
-2 Brightness and -8 on highlights, got it thanks Vincent!
Please inform on what settings one should have form QLED!!! I have a Q95T and my eyes hurt after playing the game for just a short time! I have calibrated the TV using your video on samsung QLEDs but I have no idea what to do with the settings in the game! Plese help!!!!
This channel and Gaming Tech are important channels
Holysht you did game setting now? Im 100% supporting this, gran turismo 7 is close, elden ring also need some love the game is darker i don't know best setting for x90j
hey for elden ring I'm using 6 brightness and 6 saturation, the other setting at default
On horizon I'm using -1 brightness and -8 highlights.
I have the same TV as you
I settled on very similar settings when I started playing this last week. Watching your videos for awhile now I think I’m learning. Awesome work you do.
With 1.18 patch I have seen this settings for TVs using DTM: 0/0/+10
What's your opinion Teoh? Maybe you could do an update of the settings for this game.
Thank you!
This is a good find and analysis. Did you send in a support reporting form regarding this?
I find
-2 brightness
0 shadow
+8 highlights look great to me the environment looks natural the sky is bright and colourful makes the world pop and haven't lost any detail in the clouds
Vincent makes a video teaching how to calibrate the rdr2 with the hdr enabled on the lg c1 oled to get the best possible image.
I've decided to give the game another go since they've fixed the shimmering and its really dark now, it was fine before the update. The picture looks off not matter what i do.
Honestly I Love your videos!!! I really appreciate everything you do!!! Thank You!!! Also Gran Turimso is coming out soon!!! Would love a HDR video on that too
Default settings & performance mode on lg cx have been good for me with dynamic tone mapping on but I’ll watch this properly later.
Can concur. If using DTM, the default sliders/settings work best while DTM does its job. No fiddling needed really (same goes with other games). But I can see those who want the most "accurate" picture settings following Vincent's settings.
Are these settings still good in March 2023 after all the patches the developer may have applied to the game?
What about the settings for x900h?
This. Would like to know the best settings
honestly
Awesome, I always find brightness settings confusing. Thank You Vincent!
Your videos are awesome bro..helped recal all my TVs to how they should be 👍👍
Awesome video Vincent! Hopefully more videos like this in the future! I love me some games.
This man... My gosh thank you Vince! Even the subtle showing of 2 PS5s made me bust out laughing as it's an insider... So subtle.
HDR settings I settled on for S95B,
17 clicks up from bottom on ps5 hdr calibration screen then 1 click before the logo disappears on dark.
Then for horizon,
+2 brightness
0 shadow
-6 highlights
Tv,
50
50
25
-1 gamma
Normal color space
I would appreciate also mentioning the best settings for folks that do not have HGIG like me with my 77" LG C8.
Is it the same recommendations for the TCL R635? I seem to have an issue getting the HDR right.
No one will accuse you of being Xbox Fanboy,, a really great presentation for HDR implementation in HFD. I am Using LG C9.
I've left mine on resolution mode and turned game mode off it looks amazing ive got the 4k picture with more than 30fps no screen tear at all. But varl is still useless.
Uh. You don't want to turn game mode off...
Cheers Vincent, been waiting for your waveform analysis- always thoroughly convincing
Same thing for the Sony X900H?
Hello, to clean the TV, what should we do? Wipe with a dry cloth or spray so that the panel is not damaged, and clean it every once in a while for dust
Dry lint free cloth, or apply distilled water to a lint free cloth. Don't spray anything onto the screen.
I would like to see more in depth videos on settings regarding these new titles that come out on either ps5 or xbox they are very interesting thanks Vincent
Thank you for this video. Turning sharpness off on my lg oled c9 made the picture more clear. I also have a sony vpl-vw270es protector wich also has a sharpness setting. Does this advice also apply to projectors all well ?
My TV (LG B8) does not have HGIG. I wonder if I should increase the highlights to mitigate the rolloff, but otherwise use the same settings.
Thanks for the video, and keep rolling out hdr settings for new games on lg oleds. Tc
Thanks for sharing. I was looking forward to your review and settings. Can you do Elden Ring?
Destiny 2 next please! I think they updated HDR in the Witch Queen so it would be great to get your take on it.
Thank you so much! Any chance you could make a video about the ghosting around Aloy’s face during conversations on LG OLEDs?
Really need to take a look at Destiny 2 again. I don't know when, but they changed their HDR test screen when I wasn't looking.
