Nice to see this, I haven’t played through this game in years. I’ve had it in my collection since I was a kid and I would probably include it in my personal top ten NES games. Definitely a gem not many people knew about, like S.C.A.T. and Vice Project Doom. BTW, I would always use the grenade bot (beta-beta-beta). Hard to aim but powerful and long range.
Agreed this definitely falls into that underrated gem category as far as this genre goes for me. Yeah Beta Beta Beta would be my second favorite for its relative range and certainly its power.
Never owned this game but as always you, Gary, Fluff and Blaze have the keys to beating the game. I wonder where Fluf gets all those fun facts from. That's one very smart and cool cat.
One of the most fantastic rentals I ever experienced. Have over 100 Famicom/NES games but not this one being very pricey. Recommend Prison City. PC game on Steam. Everything we loved about Shatterhand and more.
Very fun and highly overlooked game. I love the variety in robot choices. That way if you like a different combination for a given area, you can attempt to plan for that. The NES really did have some unique titles, didn't it?
Yeah when developers were pretty limited with what they could do with a platformer between the NES' limitations itself and with a huge library of other platformers to compete with, you had to have some kind of novelty so it was always refreshing when a game came up with something good that works like this and not gimmicky or lame.
I owned this game, it was one of my favorites. Was able to finish it normally, my favorite robots were: The grenade, flame thrower and sword. The laser, rico, and the ball one displayed earlier were garbage.
I played this game a ton as a kid. I never finished it, but I made it to the final stage a few times. Mostly I just loved the aesthetic of the cool guy with a cool jacket, especially when it was flashing red, and little details like how the jacket flared when he came down from a jump. My favorite robot was the sword robot, because it was just so cool, but I eventually had to give up on him in favor of longer-ranged robots. I think I also eventually settled on BAB, but BBB (mines/grenades) and AAB (laser stream) were also favorites for the range.
Yeah his overall style is pretty great. And yep, BBB is a close second, it's just the projectile ones which limit you to a single use on the screen at once can hang you out to dry if you miss the target.
True. The thing I keep in mind on the NES was their production cycles were so short that even when two games were released months apart I wouldn't rule out the possibility that one game influenced the other.
I never heard of Shatterhand. The visuals look sharp and and great. The gameplay and level design are fascinating. The powerups looks neat. Overall a unique and solid game. The story reminds me of Robocop.
I remember Shatterhand strangely enough being one of the game that a bunch of kids I knew back in the day had for their NES Sadly I never got to own it myself back in the day and only got to play it on occasion the times I visited them and I never made much progress. Another game that is somewhat similar but that I vastly prefer over Shatterhand would be Kick Master
Not sure if anyone knows this or if Fluff missed it but this game is localization of Super Rescue Solbrain (特救指令ソルブレイン, Tokkyū Shirei Soruburein, lit. Special Rescue Command Solbrain) a game originally released on the Famicom and is based on the Japanese television series of the same name produced by Toei Company. (taken form Wikipedia)
Yep someone just mentioned that. Another one of those games based on something Americans have no concept of so they just come up with their own backstory and ship it, heh.
I'm sure someone mentioned it already, but I'm a bit dissapionted, that Fluff would never mention, that Shatterhand is a localized version of japanese game Tokkyū Shirei Solbrain, based of a Tokusatsu series of the same name. Shatterhand has made some changes, such as player character (and the drone as well) being completely different, one of stages was made into something else entirely, also some human looking enemies were changed into more robotic ones (likely, a censorship concern, something like Contra and Probotector).
Good supplementary fact and that makes more sense than the story they seemingly shoehorned into the localization, ShiroiLuke. It's kind of crazy how the Japanese developers did virtually all of the heavy lifting in the 80's, then they'd just tweak the presentation or story (without changing anything else in a lot of cases) to be more "American friendly" for the NES version. So many examples across the system.
@@VideoGames101Well, story concerns were absolutely non-existent in japanese version, thanks to the tokusatsu show Tokkyū Shirei Solbrain, that had already established the main character as "the hero of the people", the game, basically lets the player, act out an episode of the aforementioned show. Shatterhand's story, by comparioson, is pretty much left in a vacuum. Oh, and I would be remiss, not to mention, that Shatterhand is much more difficult game than Tokkyū Shirei Solbrain was (in japanese version, the "invincibility" thing, would wreck most of the bosses in an instant, and that is just one of many examples) which was very common in both America and Europe, where video game rental was a common thing. And, by the way, I've forgotten the most important thing, than I should've said in the first comment - massive kudos for making this walkthrough, I absolutely love this channel and the hard work, that you put into making these guides, keep up the fine work!!!
Yeah this game doesn't try to rip off Ninja Gaiden and force cheesy cut scenes on you, so despite this game technically giving you LESS content, it's better in that regard.

Never played this one in my youth but looks like an incredible game.
Yeah just a solid title which is great if you're looking for a worthwhile but substantial challenge in the action platforming genre.

We like to say Fluff's forgotten more interesting facts about games than we'll ever know.
Love that robot buddy
He's the only one there for us in this crazy difficult game!
Another classic I’ve yet to beat. Looking forward to this class!
Most definitely!
One of the most fantastic rentals I ever experienced. Have over 100 Famicom/NES games but not this one being very pricey.
Recommend Prison City. PC game on Steam. Everything we loved about Shatterhand and more.
Nice, I'll have to check out PC!

Grenade is probably my number 2 favorite for sure.

Surprising that Shatterhand and Vice Project Doom were released 6 months apart, unique to each other but similar art style.

Agreed on the Robocop-esque story.

Yeah we did our class on Kick Master and I like that one a lot. Kind of like a more fleshed out Low G Man.
You're not the only one who missed out as a kid. I've never played "Shatterhand"
I figured I wasn't the only one. Like I said, with a library of 700ish games, we're all going to have some games we missed out on.

never played this game back in the day, only heard of it from AVGN a few years ago lol
Yep as I said I had no experience with it ahead of getting into it on here at the request of a few but a very solid title.
If you liked this and Vice: Project Doom, you'd probably also like the Power Blade duo.
I did enjoy the first Power Blade; I'd like to revisit it soon. I'm not sure I ever played its sequel, actually.
incredible game
Yep, excellent title.
ABBA. ABBA! Come on ABBA!! Avgn is all I could think of during this.
Ha glad we're not the only ones who made that joke!
When I was a kid, I always felt like shatterhand was connected with shadow of the ninja
They do look and feel very similar so I could definitely see thinking that, as well.
Never heard of this one. I'm just here to maintain my attendance.
Haha appreciated, and I'm sure you're not the only one!
Never played this, but I'm getting some vague vibes akin to Choujin Sentai Jetman.
Yeah I can see that in looking it up, about the same number of areas, as well.
this music sounds liek it came out of the tmnt nes games
Yeah it does have that Konami kind of sound to it at times.
Are you sure this guy is not related to Ace Harding? I see a lot of SOCKO going on 😏
Now I'm just thinking what if Ace Harding had BAB?
You ask and you shall receive thanks another similar game is power blade 2
I liked the very Power Blade but never thought to check out the sequel, I'll have to remedy that soon.
Looks like a better version of vice project doom.
Yeah this game doesn't try to rip off Ninja Gaiden and force cheesy cut scenes on you, so despite this game technically giving you LESS content, it's better in that regard.
VGO? as in Vigo the Carpathian?
Yep, "HE EES VEEEGO!"
Game kinda looks like a Megaman game
Yeah the platforming definitely feels like Mega Man at times.
Obligatory sacrificial comment for calling the algorithm gods.
Thank you kindly!
