@@retronate Thank you for the effort you put into creating this video. However, I find myself reminiscing about the era when video games were more challenging, requiring players to figure things out independently and learn through experience. This approach not only fostered critical thinking but also encouraged players to carefully consider their actions. I personally found this level of challenge enjoyable, as I grew up during that time and have fond memories associated with it. Classic games like Blaster Master stand out to me as particularly fun, and I continue to play them today, appreciating their design and gameplay.
This is my favorite NES game of all time. I was 6 years old when we got it home. Exploration and trying to figure out what to do next. Nominee. I drew maps for the Area 4 maze. I remember I got permission for my mother to call Nintendo Power hotline for help beating the large crab boss of underwater Area 5. I never beat it as a child, only in adulthood. Throughout my gaming journey I owned all the blaster master sequels. Wii had a great one, though difficult. Blaster Master Zero just brought it all back full circle. Fantastic NES game. Cheers.
Nice deathless clear! I can tell you've put in the practice. THANK YOU for talking about the grenade trick. In my opinion, boss fights are unplayable without that. Just a few techniques I've picked up that you didn't mention- whenever it's useful to respawn breakable bricks, you can do that by pausing and unpausing. Also, if you have the normal missiles selected, if you aim up and then very quickly press down and shoot, the game hasn't changed the cannon's angle yet and the missiles fire up. Very useful for the ceiling mounted turrets, the climb after you get hover, and being a monster when you get wall 2. When fighting the little worm guys or dealing with the mines, it's true that Sophia can't directly shoot them. Jumping just over them with lightning is an option but can be risky because of the random bolt pattern. You use the lower normal missile to great effect, and homing is also an option as you use. However, you can also quickly hop out of the tank and deal with them as Jason; his shots are on the correct level. While this can be risky especially near an edge, any damage you take is instantly healed when you climb back in the tank, so it's not as reckless as it seems with a bit of practice. Finally, you played things very safe with hover on those tricky jumps in the final area, but there is some science to doing corner jumps with wall 2. If you look at the bottom half of Sophia, the tank is roughly divided into thirds, with the front tire, central chassis, and back tire taking up nearly equal space. Imagine a vertical line between the front tire and chassis. The instant this line crosses over a ledge, the game checks the dpad to see what you're holding- if you're holding forward, Sophia will cling to the edge and bend around the corner. If your dpad is neutral and you're coasting over the corner, Sophia will not cling, and will instead stick out over the ledge. Therefore, you can ease off of the forward input for just a moment when approaching one of those nasty jumps and make it through without hover. I recommend practicing this before area 8. For all fans of classic Blaster Master, I highly recommend Blaster Master Zero. It's a retro feel modern love letter to the original with all kinds of improvements. Maps, save points, recharging hover and subweapons so you don't have to farm, very unique abilities for each gun upgrade and the ability to use any gun below your maximum level (some enemies have specific weaknesses that are worth not using max gun power), a great plot, and so on. My only gripe is that they didn't keep the original Wall 2 controls, but since that has a learning curve that bothers some players, I also understand why they changed it. Thanks for showcasing this absolute classic! While it's not as highly regarded, another title on NES which would be much more popular if people read the manual is Rocket Ranger. In particular, you need to move agents in the war room, and you have to hold A on the "transfer" menu option and press left and right to do this. Holding A was weird, and if you didn't figure that out the game was unplayable... But if you did, gosh what a fun game. Thanks again!
@@clairecelestin8437 thanks so much for these detailed strats. SO useful, particularly the one about climbing after hover (I HATEA that part). To risky to hop out of the tank to shoot the worms in area 8? I see what you’re saying on the instant heal though. I gotta work on that area for my run. Glad you enjoyed. This really is a great title to play.
Blaster Master Zero is a 7/10 semi-remake in my opinion. It's fun but it's WAY too easy and I was disappointed they didn't rework the original sound track all the way through. It has a hard mode after you beat it, but it is crushingly difficult bullet hell, the game begs for something in the middle. Blaster Master Zero 2, however, is excellent. Feels like every bit the sequel I always dreamed of getting growing up. Even the story is compelling. Love that game from beginning to end. The 3rd game in that series is a mixed bag of annoying level mechanics that I haven't had the patience to finish. What did you think about Zero 2 and Zero 3?

Nice. I love this game to death, and always enjoy content on this: A few tips, that you migh know or not know. 1) if you want to avoid that the Wall 2 upgrade clings to a spike pit wall, that you want to jump over, release the forward button before it clings, jump and use the momentum to jump over it. 2) that room at 1:34:00 where you say it is a restart, if you game over due to you losing your hovers, an alternative, risky strategy is to leave you tank as jason, and shoot the worms, as they are on the same level as you. You can always replenish your energy, when you re-enter Sophia. Watch out for the spike pits! 😊 3) there is a gun upgrade in the final room before the final bosses, if you destroy the blocks, while moving North-East. Good for replenishing that gun

Even later games in the series picked up the North American game as being cannon! This is mind blowing!!! Also, the game is a cool concept and amazingly fun, even if getting hit loses health and your gun power ups. @@retronate I memory serves, Fester's Quest has a Gun Upgrade System similar to Blaster Master, but there is only one upgrade worth a damn. If you don't have that upgrade, your gun is borderline useless. For that reason, it's hard as HELL as, unless you're good enough to not lose that gun upgrade (good luck), you spend most of the game trying to survive the fact that your only weapon is actually a detriment to the gameplay. Like we're not even talking a Baseline weapon. We're talking Negative Baseline until you get that one upgrade.

@@retronateI believe you won’t be let down.
there are multiple endings.
Do your best to play it like Super Metroid.
Nice. I love this game to death, and always enjoy content on this:
A few tips, that you migh know or not know.
3) there is a gun upgrade in the final room before the final bosses, if you destroy the blocks, while moving North-East. Good for replenishing that gun

I really hope they remastered this game one of the best I've ever played for the NES
It’s so solid all the way through. Missed out on this as a kid
When your dad works for Lockheed Martin and takes his work home with him.
@@meowymuffins7293 lol
After all these years I can help you. The scuba divers in 5 only shoot at a slight downward angle. If you always move up after engaging them, you will never be hit.
@@Snakes-w1c I sort of knew this but couldn’t verbalize it. Yes! That’ll help as I work on my speedrunning of this game
i loved this game growing up
@@kenyattacoleman7284 it’s was adored by a lot of people. I never got to play it until I was older
Ok blaster master I remember and I never beat it as a kid awesome vid
Crazy tough for a kid to beat this one…especially without the internet? At least the manual got you started but it was a big undertaking
there is a novelization of this game written about 30 years ago for kids. I had it from a book fair when I was in elementary school
@@solinari4101 another commenter mentioned this too! I’ve gotta track this thing down
Awesome run 1 life is totally insane. Love this game way ahead of it's time
@@dboygreenz really strong and yeah for 1988 it holds up tremendously well. Surprised it never got a sequel
@@retronateIt got one on the Genesis/Megadrive, and 2 later titles on PSX and Gameboy Color.
It was one of the toughest games I played back in 1988.
Such a long game to complete with no save slots or passwords. But a lot of fun to learn and go through. Incredible soundtrack also
one of my favorite nes games. a new version would be awesome.
@@youtubiefun it’s quite good.
Blaster Master is one of my favorites on the NES! Between the tank sections and the sections you get out of it and play as Jason it just feels very fun to play. Also a great soundtrack as well. A hidden gem of a soundtrack and especially it's theme is RoboCop for the Game Boy. Hopefully one day you play it and experience that theme because it's fantastic.
@@DanRPGMan I never had handhelds growing up but my emulator does have Gameboy titles. Maybe I have to expand the base of games I’m trying to finish
Golden Sun is a great RPG on the GBA and there's different genres as well with Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow which would make for a good video. There's even Final Fantasy Tactics Advance which is great in it's own right.
@ so many games and so little time…
Definitely, a single dad with two kids leaves little time for gaming.
@@DanRPGMan props to you man. The most important job
The best? Dunno. Damn good? Definitely. Freaking loved this game growing up. Took a lot of playthroughs to finally beat it.
@@Xinthus78 hell yeah! I’m really having a hard time picturing where I rank this compared to the games I’ve already finished. Will be tough to slot.
@@retronate It's way up there for me just from the gameplay, music, and very responsive controls for me. Just I know a lot of other games that were more impactful for me. Mostly rpgs.
I can certainly see how they are works, but they'll always be loaves of bread to me. Glad you did this game 👍🏻✨
@@aceofdatabase hahahaha fair point. But gray and pink leaping bread??? Lol
@@retronate I deleted the first comment because I didn't get worm to come out then I didn't again. Roargh. Yes, pink and grey blaster baguettes. I guess 😂
@ I was picking up what you were putting down lol
Now that I see more bread I think I was just barking down the wrong alley all along. They're clearly worms.
@ all you’ve done here is make me want bread. Which isn’t a tough thing to persuade me to desire…
BACK FROM WORK, let's get the rest of this walkthrough gamers!
@@livefreeprintguns hope you enjoy my friend
Dude! BLASTER MASTER is Legit! .. .Love that game.
@@Tyranix97 was such a fun game to learn and play through.
I love this game! Another awesome game that doesn't get much attention is Legacy of the Wizard!
@@trifecta1 I’ve had a couple people request that one. I’ve got a lot of games to learn!
In that whole part at 1:35:00, if you hit Select it "resets" and re-centers the screen, which brings the worms into view early. They are much easier to kill that way.
Also, at 1:36:45, if you pause the game it makes all the blocks reappear so there's no need to leave the screen and go back.
@@SOS118-CTFD select to recenter! Man I could’ve used this a bunch. Thanks!
I've always wanted to beat this game.
What a beautiful playthrough.
This video will be my bible until i do.
@@OxbowisaMstie wow that’s quite high praise thanks! Finishing it eluded a lot of folks it seems. Pretty long, very tough, and no saving! It’s a great challenge.
@@retronate It's all coming back to me.
Ages old trauma hit as soon as i fought the box boss.
👍
@ he can be REALLY annoying without the top blaster.
In my day I could clear the entire game in a little over 4 hours or so... :) My cousin still talks about watching me do it.
I’m actually gonna be racing another streamer in this game on Thursday night. Never done one before so I gotta brush up
