Manto was indo-pakistani but his works are for the whole subcontinent, in fact for the whole world. I'm from Bangladesh. Still when i read his stories it feels like I'm watching the communial riots, the actors who were living a miserable life behind the makeup, the prostitutes who watches the dreams of normal life and finally, the sorrows of partition.
Sarmad Khoosat has made Mein Manto is a great film. I hv watched it as TV serial on you tube. Very minute details he has shown. Life of Madam Noor Jehan also shown with a reality touch. Sometimes he narrates the story and sometimes he becomes the character. Great work Sarmad Khoosat .. keep it up... Very intelligent... Nandita has also presented her point of view very clearly.
Manto, Indian or Pakistani... I'm from Bangladesh...so many ppl love Manto...once upon a time we all r unitedly one nation...And Manto also...

There was a conference on Manto's work at Harvard 10 years ago,an Australian gentleman related that he read a Manto storey in a paper ,he was so taken a that he learned Urdu so that he could him in the original lan- guage.

مجھے یاد ہے کہ بارہ برس کی عمر میں جب منٹو کو پڑھا تو والد صاحب نے پکڑ لیاٰ اور بہت مار پڑی ۔ ۔لیکن کچھ ایسا عشق ہوا ان تحریروں سےکہ آج تلک نقش ہیں ، میں نے میٹو جیسا سچا انسان نہیں دیکھا جو ہر بات کو اسی طرح پیش کرتے ہیں جیسی وہ ہے او ر آج میں بھی پچاس سالوں کا ہونے کو ہوں اور اپنے والد صاحب سے کھل کر میٹو پر گفتگو ہوتی ہے شکر ہے اب مار نہیں پڑتی ۔

Surely, this is rejuvenation of a unique writer. His mind set is Punjabi, that is his expression. Typically, he cuts the bait even writing letters to Nehru, or 'Uncle Sam'. All his writing, the settings, he is immersed in the character - he is not in a flowery mushaira. Rushdi is supposed to amongst the best writers. His 'Stanic Verses' is full of vulgarity - 72 times 'F' words.
