    OMG, how fast these headlight, this is the best best I've seen until now

    These might be some of the best I’ve seen on your channel. I personally think they look a bit better aligned than the polestar with better height coverage and less of a streaky beam pattern. They also appear brighter than the EQS and the Audi/Porsche digital matrix lamps, although obviously the resolution and features are lacking. But on the other hand it seems way more responsive in adaptive mode, the intense hotspot is wider than the laser lights or EQS, and the turning function is great and more helpful than other systems that smooth out the response.
    It does kind of look like they aren’t physically turning but instead shifting the elements to either side - I wonder if this is the case and whether it’s unable to handle having them on all at once (thermal limit?) or whether it’s limiting brightness to avoid dazzling you and to take advantage of target fixation in the corners.
    And yeah, the weird behavior seems like a software glitch but perhaps it’s there for a reason that we aren’t aware of. I could live with the delay after leaving slow/lit/populated areas, but the inconsistency of ADB vs AHB is jarring. Still, I’d take these over anything we get in the US right now.
    Videos can’t completely telegraph lighting performance, but I’d rate these, the taycan, i4, polestar, and EQS as great (with each having minor downsides which means none of them are perfect). The Audi/VW/Sköda matrix lights, Tesla matrix lights, EV6, and some others I can’t remember are just nice, but seem to compromise headlamp performance to implement ADB, particularly intensity and beam coverage. I can’t remember if you’ve tested a truly bad ADB system that wouldn’t be worth the upgrade, but I’m sure there are some that would be a downgrade from a really good traditional setup (if you’re not always driving on two lane backroads with lots of traffic).
    These may be the most illustrative of the response adaptive lights are capable of - seeing the shaded box move cleanly with traffic and watching the segments turn on right behind an oncoming car passing you is mesmerizing. It almost looks like the CGI demo videos Hella, Valeo, etc. we’re putting out years ago. I wonder how far we are from a world where night driving is no less safe than daytime driving…

    It would be very interesting to see how these adaptive lights look like from the other cars perspective. I have ID.3 and I have not noticed that other cars would flash me, but a lot of trucks do. I think ID.3 does not recognize trucks as well as regular cars.

    It probably detects the motorway (higher speed) and if there is no traffic for some time it will switch to just automatic from adaptive.
    In my car (MEB), for example, above 110 kmph it will raise the low beam a little bit, for better (further) visibility at high speeds.
    Clearly they all implement some kind of motorway exceptions.. but I don't know why they would prefer high/low beam switch rather than matrix segments. Maybe the higher speed and busy traffic would mean working the adaptive system too hard?
    Either way, these lights are awesome.

    Bjørn, the cars get confused by the reflectors on the poles and middle of the highway on E6. I have the same issue with my BMW. The reflectors are positioned too high and too bright and that confuses the system by triggering the sensors. You can see that you don't have the same problem elsewhere.

    These are certainly some really good lights. I just don't like that dark horizontal line in the middle of the beam. I notice this on almost every LED-based headlight. With Xenon I didn't see that.

    How quick the high beam is to switch back on when cars have passed the other way should be the same when going from street light to no street light. That delay is always frustrating

    Whats even more impressive is the fact that these are reflective LED if am not mistaken as oppose to LED in projector housing in other car

      The sensors, sensor locations, and software behind it may be different, and I agree that the hardware should be the same. I would expect the performance to be very similar.
      I noticed the Polestar's steering based beam wasn't as responsive as in the Volvo in this video. Also, I'm sure there's been a lot of updates since the Polestar video.

    When using the same lights in my Polestar 2, I get many drivers flashing furiously at me.
    I checked driving another car and having a friend drive mine. They work, I am not blinded. So - why do some drivers flash me?
    I think it might be because the light projected up in the trees around the road makes them believe I have not dipped lights and they want to teach a lesson about courtesy.
    So annoying that I now stopped using them and just dip manually.

    • @David_Polak
      @David_Polak 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't believe people will flash furiously for the courtesy part. It must really dazzle them. I know out of experience that being used to traditional halogen headlights, LED lights can come across very sharp, white and bright. The intensity difference can startle people thinking that you're using high beams. I've had that experience several times.

  • @EdwardBartel
    @EdwardBartel 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Bjorn, after driving this vehicle and the C40, how would you consider the implementation of the Pixel lights? Are they the same since Polestar is so similar to Volvo, or did you find one vehicle to have a better implementation?
    Also, the non-Performance version of the Polestar 2 is priced similarly to the C40 twin. Do you think they are a similar value and performance, or does one clearly outshine the other? Yes, I know the Polestar is a sedan, but overall how would you rate these 2 vehicles head-to-head?
    Thanks!

    Concerning the adaptive vs. only highbeam on motorway: It is depending on the vehicle speed and / or „motorway recognition“ if the system activates the adaptive system or the auto on/off system (according to the manual).

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The manual is incorrect then. I was driving at the exact same speed and adaptive headlights were on.

    • @jodyfanning
      @jodyfanning 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have driven as little as 30km/h on dark country roads and it still activates the adaptive high beam. Not having street lights seems to be the only criteria.
