      Yeah, I saw a meteorological map and Scandinavia is the only place in Europe that hasn't been following the general weather trend. During the summer, it was hot in most of Europe, but in Scandinavia it was surprisingly colder than usual, rainy weather and during early december and parts of november it was really cold and lots of snow. In the past 2 weeks it has been fairly okay weather sitting at around 0c to +8c and from -15c to -5c in middle to northern Sweden.

    I have Volvo XC40 2024 extended range (RWD) & driving 150km trip in -4C temperature around 80-85km/h based on speedmeter the consuption was 19.8kwh/100km. And during the new year temperatures went down to -30-32C & there was no need for extra charging as we took Kids to see grandparents & drove roughly 300km. The reason I picked Volvo 1.5 years ago when I placed the order was google auto & the Fact that it was the only car I tried did not surprise me in good way & neither in bad way. Tesla... I was concerned cwrtain things like frameless Windows so it did not get shortlisted as I did not want possible surprises. Wltp is 570km & in -30C it was around 300km if someone is interested
    But thanks for the video. Vety good as always!

    I've been waiting for a new Volvo test and saw recently that Car Scanner can now be used on the OBD. I have the XC40 Twin 2021 First Edition, and it has been superb. Your previous testing helped with the decision. I like the higher seating, the better view, the comfort and the flat loading to the rear ... but the real main thing I like is the Android Automotive with built in Google Maps plus the Scandinavian simplicity. For me it is the overall driving experience on a daily basis that matters rather than splitting hairs over consumption. Would be interesting to see how the RWD Long Range compares. Happy New Year Bjorn 🙃

    I like your real-world tests, but I think it does not make too much sense to compare cars directly when the temperature is so different.
    I would suggest that you really pick at least one car and test it under different conditions. Try this Volvo at summer conditions. I agree with you that you will get a way better time. Maybe also at rainy whether. That way, we get a better understanding of how much the conditions affect driving.
    Last summer, I drove with my Polestar 2 from Stockholm to my favorite Ionity station at Granna and almost ran out of juice since it was raining. The consumption was way higher than normal.

    Good video. From the data it appears the drivetrain is a bit more efficient. Your efficiency numbers are similar to the previous XC40 but at much cooler temperatures. As for the weather I'm guessing you are getting some type of Polar Vortex. Air shifting over from the polar region. This is actually caused by climate change. One area gets well below seasonal temperatures but everywhere else is well above. Here in Southern Ontario Canada we are 5-10K above seasonal right now and my grass is green. I've never seen it this warm this consistently this time of the year.

    The 14 degree Celsius difference is more than sufficient for a 10% increase of energy consumption.
    It would have been a sub 10h:30m run with an average temperature of around 6 degrees.

    • @Klatrevalross
      @Klatrevalross 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Assuming all loss is due to aerodynamic drag. Rolling resistance, internal resistance (batteries), motor efficiency are among other factors dependent on temp. While a significant range increase is very likely, 10% is probably too much. Air is 15% denser at -20°C than 20°C, if 90% of the resistance is due to aerodynamic drag (rest near constant and mostly rolling resistance), the difference excluding everything else would be closer to 5%. I think Bjørn is in the neighborhood with the 10:30 guess :)

    My Polestar 2, MY 22, 69 kWh, charged 10 - 80% @ 2°C in 25 minutes. It now always charges 10-80% in 25 mins which is 3 minutes faster than it was sold to us as charging. I haven't ever tried it below freezing. Only ever at or about 0°C. But at those temps or above, not a trace of "coldgate". Also, peak is 140kW pretty consistently, which it holds for up to 6 minutes. There is a bit of cycling with small drops to 135, but several times, it will recover to 140 kW again. I neither know what you do to get the (dreadful) efficiency values from these cars, nor what happens to you when charging. On the MY24 Polestar, I think the 20" wheels made a huge difference, and you had no problems with charging. Just efficiency. Our car has been right across France and back in the summer, where the cruise control was set to 135 kmh. We were never worse than 21.5 kWh / 100km AFAIR. The car was full. 4 people and luggage for 3 weeks holiday. This Christmas, in a flood, and into a gale, right through Central Germany all the way to the South, although many speed restrictions, and unable to drive > 110 kmh for the first half due to safety, we still got 23.5 kWh/100km. Coming back at mostly 130 kmh when possible, we got 21 kWh/100km. 19" wheels but winter tyres.

  • @anteg74
    @anteg74 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    AWD, 130 km/h, 22 degrees in the coupe and 20" tires explains the high consumption. But I understand that it is to be able to compare with the other 1000km tests. However maybe not representative of how most people use their cars. I have a 2024 RWD with 19" wheels and have driven from Stockholm to the north of Sweden in winter climat when snowing with a consumption of 235kwh/100km. Driving according to the speed limits or slightliy below when heavy traffic and 18 degrees temperature in the coupe, which i find adequate when wearing winter clothing. But with that said not the best car if hammering it on the motorway. But that is not why I bought the car. It has other qualities. I like the fact that it is short and high which is the opposite of what is needed for good aerodynamics, which is very low on my priority list.

I believe the larger models will be built at the Torslanda plant in Göteborg, just like today's gasser models are.

    I have this exact model, i find the percentage estimates on arrivals very accurate, the seats are wool with a very small Swedish flag and yes very comfy, the other finishes are all dark and i like the lift this grey wool gives over dark faux leather interior, similar to the Polestar but the light finish is nappa leather and £4000 mmmm! I really like the car for many things it does, the headlights are amazing, its supper comfy, 360 camera, display while not big is pin sharp and snappy and the car is extremly fast. Little things i dont like the bluethooth only music which doesnt have any meta data so is a blank screen (but there is a work around with one of the USB C's in the front and a flash drive and Audiowagon app) and the rear heated seats only work in 'paired climate mode' why?
    This is a box on wheels like a SUV should be hence good headroom in the back so regardless of drive train it is not an efficient car but its a car so it needs to work regardless of this and imho it does very well

    Bjorn, why did the Volvo C40 (2022) do the test in 10:35, and the XC40 from 2020 took 12:15? Both have 78kWh batteries I believe, and they are essentially the same car, the slight aerodynamic advantage of the C40 is pretty insignificant/minimal. By the way do you have any plans to do some drive on Cupra Born, would love to know about it too...

      If you have doubts, then go for EV, you won't regret it! Once you'll be in it you'll experience why charge stops are not a problem. I do pretty hardcore road trips myself quite regularly...
      What Bjorn does here is not how you do it in reality : you'd charge more but less often.

      Thanks for a very good response , I have rented Cupra Born recently and i like that car , we drove from my home (Upplands Väsby) to and fro Arsenalen, Sveriges Försvarsfordonsmuseum and it was in total 200KM , i charged the cupra to 100% later when we return to our place i checked the battery status and it was showing me 20% , but when i drive V60 from Åre to Norway and back to Åre the fuel consumption was not that much, this is what confusing us actually.

    • @papysebpapy
      @papysebpapy 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mwuhaq EVs are quite sensitive to speed, elevation change, front wind and temperature. Therefore estimating real consumption is sometimes tricky. Rather try planning your trips with apps like the excellent (although somehow a bit complex) aBetterRoutePlanner, and focus on scheduled % at arrival. It tends to be very accurate.
      Cupra's embeded route planner also does that but sometimes with lesser accuracy, it can get confusing sometimes.

    Honest question. When on a road trip, doesn’t these constant long charging pauses become exhausting/irritating? If you’re driving 120 km/h they become quite frequent. Stopping and charging every 2.5 h for 30 min just seems as a step back in terms of human development.

    • @sunseeker-yb5qt

      That's a good question. I've done a couple of ~2000 km trips (driving time about 2,5 days) already, and I don't mind having a small break (like 20-ish minutes) every 2 hours, even though driving a comfy EV. And - how often do you really drive these long stretches. Anyway in a couple of years, the ranges are again longer "by default" so the issue will slowly just vanish.
