  • A demonstration of how the Polestar 2 headlights work, and why they’re so magical.
Please note due to chip shortages (18/6/22), the Pixel Headlights are currently unavailble but might be might once again be in the very near. For more information check: www.polestar.com/au/polestar-...

    Excellent explanation! Thx.

Nice! Can't wait until they approve usage in US. My model Y actually has 102 pixels vs Polestars 80 so should be even better.

The problem is that Tesla does not provide the ADB function for model Y, even though the headlight itself of model Y is a (ADB capable) matrix headlight.
However Tesla has enabled the ADB function of Model3 highland in the recent 2024.2 update

    Very clever Chris 🙀
When it’s available does it come as standard or is it an upgrade?

In Canada the Pixel LED headlight comes as a part of the Pilot Pack. In many European countries I know they have to remove this feature due to legal limitation, therefore they got a cheaper "Pilot lite" pack. So it's not a standard feature for sure. You can only get it through a full Pilot pack. If you only see a "Pilot lite" option, that means it's not currently available for your region.

It's part of the plus pack. Available on some cars they have in stock, but if you custom order now, it might not be available due to chip shortages. Polestar says it should return very soon.

@@chrisvanderstock Hi Chris, does the model 3/Y have similar capabilities?

Cool technology! How well it will hold up over a decade of usage is another story. Of course, this is just further encouragement for folks with headlights designed for plain filament bulbs to stick the brightest LED bulbs into a reflector housing and blast out enough "low beam" light to be visible over the horizon.

The ADB headlight has been existing for years.
It started as an upgrade function of the AFS headlight that the low/high beam adapts to the road curves by turning the illumination modules/optical lens horizontally, soon after this, the engineers realized that the same mechanism could be used to make the main beam dazzling-proof to other road users.
And that is how the first generation of ADB headlight works.
The second/third generation ADB headlight use multiple discrete light sources, just like in the video, the main beam is a combination of multiple light beams that can be controlled individually, thus you don't have to turn the whole optical system physically(certain solutions, like MEB, implement both mechanisms at the same time).
The second generation ADB headlight usually use around 10~100 segments, while the third generation has at least 10,000 pixels, and sometimes up to couple of million pixels.
The million pixel solution is actually based on the technology of a DMD projector, and is being replaced by 10,000 pixel level micro-LED solutions, due to cost reasons.

Great lights, think of all the kangaroos detected earlier that will live to hop another day (in Aus)

Think of all the blinded motorists that have to put up with them …. Try being followed by one on unlit roads at night.

I had one of these awful contraptions behind me tonight. The glare in my side mirrors was awful and had to dip the interior mirror and I have all round rear privacy glass at that too!
The lights in general overpowered my lights in my vw touran and were very distracting illuminating my entire peripheral vision field.
I was tempted to stop and reverse into the thing to make it stop in all honesty …. These need banning for road use!!
