God bless Michael McConnohie for the voice of Uther. That shriek of pain as his soul was torn apart and the dramatic emphasis he puts into the lines adds so much weight to everything that is said.
Michael McConnohie is the man who voiced him dating back to WC3.

I think Uther is realizing deep down he is making a mistake as he trained arthas and as such it was his failure that led to Arthas falling. Remember Arthas' own soul was stolen by frostmourne and he was not incontrol of his actions afterwards.

The impression I got was that Frostmourne wounded people's souls, which was an unforgivable act. Death knights just resurrect empty husks. Warlocks, however...
Thought they retconned at first but you can see one part of his soul going into the blade and another going to Shadowlands. We meet the soul fragment in the blade in Icecrown during WotLK and here we see the other part. Looks like something similar to Varian's soulsplit happened here where the two fragments take on different personalities as the fragment within the blade ended up forgiving Arthas and the part that went to Bastion was hellbent on revenge. That's why he couldn't ascend. The part of him that should've made it possible was missing.

I’m thinking it’s part of him being a Paladin. He was filled with such light power to put up a strong fight against Arthas. Maybe his connection to the light was strong enough that it split his soul when he was killed with frostmourne
Exactly what I was thinking.
To add on this basis, I believe Ner'zhul created Death Knights from Paladins exactly of this reason - because some Paladins like Uther could not be completely consumed by the Lich King at all due to Light. Probably the Eredar that made Ner'zhul into Lich King knew this too. So unable to convert Paladins into his own he had to convert them into creatures of Vengeance, Death Knights.
I thought his soul was split into light and "anima stuff", and went to the shadowlands after the blade was broken ( time is different there so...), would make sense a shadowlands related item only being able to capture a "shadowlands intended thing" the soul I mean.
What I'm worried about is one of the murlocs I've killed ascending and yeeting me into The Maw.
As it turns out, Murloc genocide is the only way to true salvation.

Bro, Arthas, even the control of Nerzhul, willingly let himself be used as a weapon of destruction. He killed his father, destroyed his kingdom, doomed most of the population to the curse of undeath, used the ash urn of his father as a way to revive Kel'Thuzad, killed his teacher, and then wounded/stop a part of his soul. Even after that, he kept seeking more destruction. Ik that Arthas' issue is very complex but his lack of will to resist taking the easy way out to save his people led him down a path where Uther's decision is justified.
Never liked Uther. IMO, he was always blind to everything that didn't align with his view of the world, and remained that way after death

Dude, the artists NAILED his expressions there. The contemplation, the look of regret and consideration of mercy, then Devos whispering "Remember what he did and take your vengeance" and THEN the crazed look of wrath? 😗👌 I would watch these things for days if Blizz made more of them.

@@MrSelkies can you really consider it a retcon when we never really knew what happened with Arthas' soul when he died? I feel like this just added more context to it. I kind of see it as the cliche where, if you dont actually see a character die, then that just leaves room to add something later or just leave them "dead".

They sacrified the warcraft soul for the money. They know people are still nostalgic for w3 and Arthas story, so they will milk it as much as possible.

I hope the soul of Uther that was trapped in the blade, manages to meet up with this broken Uther, and convince him to do what he (the trapped) did: Forgive Arthas, and remember the student he was, and not the monster he became.
Since they showed in this cinematic that his soul was split, I still have hope.

@@Itachixg Just because he calls it justice, doesn't mean it is justice. He made it personal, and you can't judge anything right when you make it personal - That's also the point with the Bastion and their teachings from what we know so far. This broken Uther and his paragon buddy are taking "justice" into their own hands, and dealing out judgement as they see fit from their personal point of view. Uther calls it "justice", but that's simply to excuse and justify his lust for vengeance. It's a very typical and human thing to do.
You also see Uther struggling with the choice right before he drops him, but the paragon is seething with hate and urges him to throw Arthas into the Maw. She's kind of the Devil on his shoulder. The part of Uther struggling with condemning Arthas was basically the part that won out in the Uther trapped in Frostmourne; the part that chose to forgive and forget. Judgement was not for him to decide.
The Uther in Frostmourne stayed true to the way of a Paladin of the Light, whilst the Uther in Bastion got screwed by his own Paragon and led on a path of vengeance.

There is so much pain and anger at the same time.
I feel much anguish in his voice, like he is sad for the path arthas took
For a moment I thought he wouldn't drop him, and wish this happened to see what could happen then
I think there was some self-reflection in those words. In a sense, Uther's motivation to punish Arthas is the same mindset that drove Arthas to Northrend in the first place (in pursuit of justice). Whether it was right or wrong is subjective, but I definitely feel like Uther was taking some responsibility there.

That voice. was so perfect. It truly captures how forsaken and pained he felt at that moment.
It's so chilling having something so horrible happen to a good man. Uther represented the ideals of Lordaeron, and the gentle strength of the Light. He didn't deserve this, which makes his pain cut all the more deeply.

@@rachaelsims6625 I got goosebumps when that musical piece started, in the very first second of vocals. So iconic. 10 years of a storyline coming to and end and they could not have used a better piece. It just communicates everything it should. Sorrow, regret, resolution, and how far we've come. This was one of the most moving lore-related thing Blizzard has released in a long time, no surprise it's a WotLK callback.
Going back and watching the fall of the lich king cinematic knowing everything we know now brings up all the feels

Seeing Arthas in such detail, aged with stubble, scars and bags under his eyes really gives perspective of time in this game
I agree, also the decay of bearing that burden. It's so beautiful. They seem to always nail the story when it comes to Arthas' arc. So much love put into it, and it really shows. Part of me always wants Arthas to be part of the story, but I know times change, and we can't beat that dead horse forever.

The worst part is that if Arthas had been brought to the Arbiter, he may not have been sent to the Maw. It was very likely, but he could've instead been sent to Revendreath or another realm that would've made him atone for his sins. That's the most heartbreaking thing, that they never even gave Arthas a chance at redemption, they just threw him away
Who knows. Maybe he will return in some way and get a redemption like illidan
I'm betting by the end he's going to be redeemed since pretty much all his evil acts were done under the influence of Frostmourne(except for betraying the mercenaries), and while he was Lich King the remnants of Arthas' consciousness actually held back the Scourge from obliterating Azeroth.

Arthas was warned about the path he was following very early. There's some subtleties to what Kel'thuzad was saying to Arthas before Stratholme as well. Even before he took Frostmourne and "forfeited" Muradin's Life to even pick up the Runeblade.

@@TheChrysaora In this video he wasn't vengeful. Arthas was beyond forgiveness. This was retribution. He clearly had doubts at the end, so he was even still considering forgiveness, but decided that regardless of his feelings, Arthas deserved punishment.

This is beyond sad. The part of Uther's soul that was trapped within Frostmourne chose to forgive Arthas, and remember the student he was and not the monster he became. Even after what he did, i've felt sadness seeing how Uther senteces him in to the Maw.
His soul was corrupted after claiming Frostmourne, it’s not 100% on him. Stratholme is on him that’s about it.
Probably would’ve gone there anyway. No evil spirits told him to murder an entire city, or burn boats, or slaughter allies when they weren’t useful anymore.

@@isawdavis At the end of WOTLK and killing the lich king(arthas) His last words were "I see, Only darkness, before me" so it's foreshadowing what happened in the sidelines of when he officially died by our hands(and tirion) back sometime in 2010. So they connected the consistency fairly well in this regard.
@@isawdavis When you die you normally go to a realm in the Shadowlands that closely represents your beliefs, for example most Druids go to Ardenweald, where they become animal spirits that aid in the eternal cycle of regrowth of the world, by tending to nature and animal spirits, Selfless people, heroes and justicars go to Bastion, where they forget their mortal lives to become passer for the dead, bringing souls from the mortal realm to the Shadowlands
There's an infinite amount of realms in the Shadowlands, all tailored to specific people, but of course since this is a game we only have access to 5
I'm guessing Arthas felt heavy remorse upon his death, which should have sent him to Revendreth, a realm where souls go to atone for their sins to find peace by accepting them, but Devos and Uther snatched his soul at the moment of his death and threw him in the Maw instead, a realm of eternal darkness that is used to jail the worst of the worst, the unredeemable, the monsters of the world, basically condemning him to everlasting pain and suffering out of "Justice", hence why he sees "only darkness"

The soul being split theory seems to make sense if you think about it.
The soul trapped in Frostmourne learned over time that the Arthas that killed him wasn't truly himself, he was manipulated and basically mindcontrolled and Uther forgave Arthas. The soul that got sent to Bastion only knew that Arthas betrayed the kingdom and killed him. He was never inside Frostmourne and got to experience what really happened to Arthas. After Arthas dying you could say the soul merged with Uther, which is why he suddenly hesitates but Deimos gives Uther the push he needed to sway his judgement and cast Arthas into the Maw.
@Sylvos Salazar How you know that it did not happen? Maybe it went unnoticed, because they forgott there mortal lives for the Bastion, or even got in another Fraction in the shadowlands. There is a short story of sylvanas and how they help here get back in to here live

This video shows Uther the Lightbringer whispered to the light at the moment of his death. As his soul came out of his body, part of his soul was split and saved explicitly by the light because that half of soul was covered in golden yellow. None of the other souls we saw in game has a yellow color besides Valarjar 2) It’s not logical to say Sylvanas’s soul had also split. Even if she did, we don’t know if she will end up in the bastion out of the four covenants.

I think he felt true regret for what he did before his corruption and blamed himself for what happened afterwards so choosing to remain behind in the Maw as penance and to ensure no one ever does what the current Jailer is doing again would be a fitting end to his story.

She already knows, all the Death Pantheon knows of this because all the souls that are judged by arbiter, have their memory records sent to the Death Pantheons. It is same as everywhere, those in the leadership position will always hide some major problems from their underlings. On one side, it protects their position, on the other side, it gives them the opportunity to root out troublemakers, Devos for example in this scenario. Archon said "You will abandon this course." She never said that she doesn't acknowledge the danger or she would not do anything about it. Every word Archon said has great meaning and importance. Devos turning to the Jailer is a direct effect of ignoring the path and Archon's warning.
